4 Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce

Hello Friends,

My name is Michelle Thacker and I am the 2012 Chamber President. I have been serving on theChamber Board since 2007. Eastern Oregon has been my home for over 36 years. Our valley isenriched with nearby mountains, rivers, lakes and riding trails. We have a variety of schoolingoptions for our children including public and private educations. We take pride in our youngergeneration by attending many events including sporting games, rodeos, livestock shows andmusical performances. For those who love to volunteer, there are over a dozen clubs andorganizations always looking for new members. Our community thrives on volunteerism; we havecommunity spirit!

Our local businesses, including the Chamber of Commerce, have economic challenges ahead ofus. Daily, our businesses evaluate practices to see what they can do to make their businesses moresuccessful and thrive in this ever-changing environment. Recently, the Chamber adopted theprocess of using an online newsletter distributed monthly. This has been a cost saving measure, but it also delivers the upcoming month’s news in a more timely fashion, besides beingenvironmentally friendly. In our newsletter you will find upcoming events, strategic businessclasses, ribbon cuttings and local announcements. We have also started advertising using multi-media sources such as Facebook and increased our radio ad campaigns to keep our membersinformed of local business events. The Chamber is an advertising tool for its members.

As neighbors, we need to support each other’s businesses to remain successful. When shopping foryour next purchase and comparing price, quality and customer service, please take one morefactor into consideration. How is this business giving back to our community? I am confident youwill find our local businesses support our community with their nominal donations and manyhours of volunteer work. Let’s keep our valley our home and shop locally from our neighborlymerchants who give back to our community, all year long.

Respectfully,

Michelle ThackerPresident, Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce

The town of Milton originated in 1872, after W.S. Frazierestablished land for a town site. M.V. Wormington constructed thefirst residence in the area in 1873 and, by consensus, the fledglingcommunity was named Milton. By 1882, the settlementencompassed a population of 400 with several businesses and mills, along with a schoolhouse, railroad station, two churches, a postoffice and an express office. Milton was incorporated as a city soonafter in 1886.

Freewater was established in 1889 by a group of men discontentwith the path Milton was on, one reason being the prohibition ofsales of alcoholic beverages. Initially named “New Walla Walla,”the name “Freewater” resulted from an advertising slogan used to

attract new residents – “Free Water For all Home Sites.” The newtown, which was also known for its saloons, was incorporated as acity in 1902.

While Milton and Freewater remained separate cities for severaldecades, the two communities began to grow closer, paving theway for many residents to advocate for a merging. TheConsolidation Club was formed after World War II, with J.T.Monahan elected chairman. Not everyone accepted the new idea, which created a challenge as state law mandates a majority vote topass the edict. An election in 1950 led to a favorable move forconsolidation, and thus the new city of Milton-Freewater wasfounded. The rest is history!

The Milton-Freewater area is recognized by agriculturalists as anexceptional place to raise crops of virtually any kind. Its location inthe “banana belt” of the Walla Walla Valley with its moderateclimate, long growing season, temperate winters and easyaccessibility to ample water and rich soil make it ideal for theproduction of outstanding fruit and vegetables in a shorter timeperiod than in some other areas of Oregon and Washington.

Apples, cherries, peaches, nectarines, prunes, plums, grapes, wheat, peas, peonies, alfalfa, cornand asparagus are grown in abundance. The fruitcrops raised in the area generate more than $85million in revenue every year, while the winegrape industry has increased its earnings andprominence to a $100 million industry forUmatilla County. At present, apples are the chiefcrop by volume in the region, but wine grapes

may quickly become the leader in coming years. Approximately 60percent of the wine grapes processed in the Walla Walla Valley areproduced in Oregon, a number certain to increase with recentvineyard expansions.

Umatilla County is also known as the largest wheat producing areain the state of Oregon.

Located in northeastern Oregon (just 8 miles south of Walla Walla,Washington), Milton-Freewater is a community surrounded by orchards, wheat fields and vineyards set against the beautiful Blue Mountains (yes, they really are blue!). Long before the two towns of Milton and Freewater merged in 1950, settlers flocked to this area to take advantage of the fertile soil. Now situated within the acclaimedWalla Walla Valley Wine Appellation, the area is still well known for its agricultural bounty. Lots of sun in the summer and mild winters contribute to an almost perfect climate.
