• A diverse combination of land uses in the study area, including retail, commercial (offices), residential, health facilities, education, hotel, social facilities, public open space and informal retail.

• The M17 (Kingsway Avenue/Empire Road) traverses the study area from west to east.
• The area is further from south to north criss-crossed by the M71 (Barry Hertzog Avenue) that branches off north-westwards towards Randburg with northbound traffic passing over the M17 via a fly-over bridge. These primary axes are also connected by a circular network consisting of AnnetRoad, Owl Street, WabordRoad, Napier Road and Menton Road. The M18 (Annet Road) furthermore passes along the southern edge of the study area and connects eastwards via Enoch Sontonga Avenue into Braamfontein.

• The pedestrian movement-aligned with the primary vehicular network.
• The busiest pedestrian routes are along Empire and Annet Roads.
• Higher-than-average pedestrian flows are also noticeable along Napier Road (linked to the Milpark Hospital and connected facilities), Frost Road and Menton Road (associated with UJ and Wits) as well as along Owl Street and Stanley Avenue related to the 44 Stanley mixed-use precinct.
• Secondary pedestrian flows are also observed through the Frank Brown Park indicative of the direct connection between the RVBRT station and the Milpark Hospital and the German school.
• Empire Road, Barry Hertzog Avenue and Annet Road act as strong barriers that obstruct pedestrian movement and place pedestrians at risk.
• There is poor pedestrian connectivity to peripheral institutional precincts such as Wits, UJ and Milpark Hospital.
• The residual nature of the streetscape as well as limited passive surveillance from adjoining buildings make many pedestrian routes dangerous to walk during quiet periods and after dark.

1. The large, enclosed university campuses located just outside and around the southern periphery of the study area, including the UJ and WITS University further eastwards.
2. A media node anchored by the on the south-western border of the study area.
3. A healthcare cluster in the northern part of the study area, anchored by the Netcare Milpark Hospital and the Lancet Laboratories precinct on Napier Road.
4. Several educational institutions, including McAuley House School, the Deutsche Schule and Jon Orr Technical High School on the edge of the study area.
5. A specialist media and institutional cluster around Media Mill including AFDA and Atlas Studios.
6. The 44 Stanley Avenue and Metal Box Centre mixed use node.
7. A medium to high density residential component, located in the centre of the study area south of Empire Road.
8. Frank Brown Park that functions as a passive open space.

• The RVBRT stations have an established street furniture profile including benches, bollards and bins.
• For the MilNMT, specific purpose-made benches, pencil bollards, traffic bollards and square street bins are proposed. These are compatible, but able to be differentiated from the furniture for the RVBRT stations.
