WESTERN BALKAN: AN EXAMPLE OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL MISINTERPRETATION AND GEOPOLITICAL MANIPULATION

Summary

The EU has designed a geographically inadequate and geopolitically manipulative term Western Balkan for the territory of former Yugoslavia, without Slovenia and including Albania. The aim was to stabilize the area and reserve it for the Euro-Atlantic expansion. At the same time, it served for examination of the unique action of the EU towards the extremely heterogeneous region. According to its predispositions, Serbia should have been a leader of the Western Balkan, but its power is being diminished due to its poor international position. After entering of Croatia into the EU, the relations are about to be significantly changed. Serbia will become territorially, demographically and economically more dominant. For the purpose of its containment and creation of artificial balance of the Western Balkan after 2013, the West will instrumentalize the Islamic factor even more so.

Resume

In paralel with the introduction of new, transitional, unipolar world system after the end of the Cold war, a new terminology has been sistematically introduced into the social communication. Its mission consisted in spiritual transformance and preparation of the subjects for the new order in the making. Special glossary was designed for the area towards which the victorious expansion of NATO and the EU was pointed Central Europe and Balkan. Geographically inadequate and geopolitcally manipulative term Western Balkan has been created during the last years of the 20th century, which comprised former Yugoslavia without Slovenia, but including Albania. It wasnt only the term of neutral name and limited duration, but also an experiment of ideology of globalism and the test for EU common foreign policy.

Primary goal of creating the Western Balkan was to stabilize the postconflict area, to harmonize it for an Euro-Atlantic expansion, and receive a hallmark of the West, although Western Balkan in geographical, civilization and geopolitical sence mostly doesnt belong to the West. Furthermore, Serbia as the largest and most populated country of the Western Balkan, is not located at the western, but at the central part of the Balkan region. Such position of Serbia will be especially emphasized after joining of Croatia to EU in 2013. According to that, in the forthcoming future, the Western Balkan will be significantly diminished and changed. Serbia will become even more dominant in territorial, population and economic terms. Serbias potential power in the region will be additionally contributed by the Serbian population and neighboring area (especially the Republic of Srpska). In order to preserve the artificial balance in the diminished Western Balkan, the West will still curb the Serbian factor by instrumentalizing the geopolitical pretensions of the Muslim/Bosniak and Albanian element.
