The research will eval- uate how well these membranes per- form when operated at 85%, or greater, water recovery on conven- tionally pretreated water. The researchers also hope to determine how often the membranes need to be cleaned, and what is the optimal cleaning strategy to maintain a suc- cessful desalting operation. The third project calls for a new concentrate recovery technology to be fed by the reject stream of a large- diameter RO unit. The project hopes to confirm previous pilot- scale research, which produced 95% water recovery — a 10% increase over more traditional RO. The con- centrate recovery process involves using chemicals to remove com- pounds with the greatest potential to foul a membrane surface, fol- lowed by treatment with a sec- ondary RO system. The WQIC is a full-service, oper- ational water research center. It includes three test trains and multi- ple stand-alone test devices. It serves as a field site to investigate new and improved water treatment technolo- gies, including pretreatment associ- ated with desalination. The company has also launched its Steritest Equinox pump for use in isolators. The inexpensive Immobilon Western HRP and AP chemilumi- nescent substrates provide a high signal response at mid-femtogram levels. Primarily used in Western and dot, slot or spot blotting appli- cations, each versatile substrate has a high signal intensity to facilitate the detection of both high and low abundance proteins. The substrates use fewer primary and secondary antibodies than tra- ditional, low-sensitivity substrates, says the company. As a result, anti- body consumption drops signifi- cantly and reagent costs are reduced. Available in ready-to-use formats, the two substrates are compatible not only with polyvinylidene fluo- ride (PVDF) and nitrocellulose membranes, but also commonly used buffers and blocking reagents. In other news, Millipore has introduced an isolator version of its Steritest Equinox pump for sterility testing applications. According to the company, it has been optimized for use with its Steritest and Steritest EZ sterility testing devices, and it delivers consistent testing in a secure environment and reduces overall testing time. The software-controlled peri- staltic pump can be installed easily in both glove and half-suit isolators. This gives laboratory technicians a safe and uniform way of transfer- ring drug samples from various packaging formats to the Steritest and Steritest EZ testing devices. Using the company’s mounting kit, the pump is affixed directly to an isolator work table. Analysts download custom pro- cedures from a computer onto the pump, and are guided through selected standard operating proce- dures by a series of prompts. A patented auto-close pump head simplifies the loading and unload- ing of the device’s tubing, without the risk of damaging isolator gloves. The Steritest Equinox pump is also available for use in sterility test- ing procedures that are carried out in laminar flow hoods.
