WHAT ISMILLIPEDE MEMORY??

MILLIPEDE MEMORY is an application of nanotechnology.

It is one of the innovative thoughts from IBM scientists.

Main purpose of it is to have an effective data storage.

Page 3: millipede memory

HOW IT CAME INTO EXISTENSE??

In order to store large amount of data we go for a technology which was in existence 110 years back called “punchcards”.

from that technology with two differences this millipede memory came into existence

millipede technology is rewritable able to store more than 3 billion bits of data in a

small hole.

DEFINITION

Millipede is a non-volatile computer memory stored on nanoscopic pits burned into the surface of a thin polymer-layer , read and written by a MEMS-based probe.

It promises a data density of more than 1 terabit per square inch .

ANIMATED VIEW

An animated view of the Millipede nanomechanical storage device illustrates

how an individual tip creates an indentation in a polymer surface (bottom) and how a large number of such tips are operated in parallel(top).

Technical Background

The core of the Millipede project is a two-dimensional array of v-shaped silicon cantilevers that are 0.5 micrometers thick and 70 micrometers long.

The current experimental setup contains a 3 mm by 3 mm array of 1,024 cantilevers.

Page 8: millipede memory

WORKING PRINCIPLEWorking of this millipede memory includes

reading, writing of data .

Bits are written by heating a resistor built into the cantilever to a temperature of typically 400 degrees Celsius.

For reading, the resistor is operated at lower temperature, typically 300 degrees Celsius.

ADVANTAGESHigh density

more reliable

large storage space

Possibility of reading ,writing and overwriting in parallel.

Page 11: millipede memory

DISADVANTAGESThe main disadvantage existing with this

technology is

EXPENSIVE.

Although the data density of a Millipede is high, the capacity of an individual device is expected to be relatively low .

Page 12: millipede memory

APPLICATIONS

MICRO DRIVERS: These can be used for micro drives, enabling use in small footprint devices like watches, mobile phones and personal media systems.

HIGH CAPACITY HARD DRIVES:: Due to high density, more reliability, high capacity hard drivesare choosen.

CONCLUSION

Rather than using traditional magnetic or electronic means to store data.

‘Millipede’ technology is a rewritable, and may able to store more than 3 billion bits of data in the space occupied by just one hole in a PUNCH CARD.
