Workers embark on strike action

FIRE: The fi re that was started by SAMWU members in front of the main entrance at the municipality on Monday, complaining about salary dispariti es.

STRIKE: SAMWU members striking in front of the municipal building on Monday, just before their leadership met with the management, agreeing to suspend the strike pending investi gati ons that will be carried out by the service provider on salary dispariti es.

South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) in Tzaneen went on a strike at the municipality on Monday demanding to meet with the municipal management regarding issues on salary disparities.

There was supposed to be a meeting between SAMWU and the municipal management when members of the union started burning tyres and tree branches in front of the main entrance to the municipality. They even closed the vehicle entrance to the municipality.

“We ended up reaching an agreement with the municipality that they will resolve the issue of salary disparities. A service provider was appointed last week Thursday and is

given all the necessary documentations to deal with the issue,” said Victor Manyama, SAMWU Chairperson in Tzaneen.

“Leadership of SAMWU and the management sat down and decided to suspend the strike pending investigations into the matter. Mafa Attorneys and Labour Practitioners were appointed to look further into the matter and we are waiting for the service provider to fi nish with the investigations and give a report,” said Neville Ndlala, Greater Tzaneen Municipality spokesperson. He further assured urgency was a priority on the matter.

NCOP pleased with service delivery progress

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) members are pleased with the progress made by the provincial government regarding service delivery, particularly in areas highlighted as service delivery hotspots.

The NCOP`s week-long visit last week focussed on Mopani and Vhembe District

Municipalities respectively. The NCOP`s Limpopo Whip, Tsepane

Mampuru says the political will and commitment by both the local and the provincial government have paved the way for service delivery in the province.

“Although more work still needs to be done to improve the lives of the people of the province, however as the NCOP we are impressed by what we read in the progress reports and have observed on ground level during our interaction with the people. Site

visits to service delivery areas have also been eye-openers.

The delegation has visited several centres of services delivery including hospitals, police stations, cooperatives, community projects, water schemes and culminated in public meetings in Relela, Greater Letaba Municipality and Chavani in the Makhado Local Municipality.

Meanwhile, Mampuru has acceded that not all challenges could be solved overnight, thus long terms solutions are necessary.

Provincial Week is a key mechanism for the NCOP to achieve its mandate of representing the provinces in the national sphere of government. The theme of this week’s programme is: ‘Together making service delivery work for our people’.

Concerns over high electricity tariffsBusiness owners in Tzaneen have raised

concerns about a massive increase in electricity tariffs.

Some concerned business people say that the Greater Tzaneen Municipality has suddenly, without prior notifi cation, started charging them more than double the price of electricity.

One business person who has been hardest hit by the sudden increase of more than 60 percent in the past three month says he can not maintain the exorbitant power bills.

“For example in April I paid just over R10 000, but in July I had to more than R18, 000 despite having used less electricity than in April,” said a business man who spoke out on condition of anonymity.

He said that if the municipality does not cease its extremely high electricity tariff increases, he will have no choice but retrench

some of his workers. Some business owners are so exasperated

by the skyrocketing electricity bills and they want municipality to give them a rebate.

Others are saying some municipal offi cials ask for R500 bribe to keep their electricity connection while they are trying to raise money to pay their bills and if they do not pay the bribe their power is cut off.

Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala said the high electricity bill is caused by a seasonal charge which only applies in winter.

He urged those who have queries regarding their electricity bills to bring their monthly electricity consumption statements to the municipality so that they could be assisted.

Regarding the bribes, Ndlala said the perpetrators should be reported to the municipality as soon as possible.

Invitation to apply for fundingLeading empowerment funder, the National

Empowerment Fund (NEF) is inviting aspirant business owners in the province to apply for funding.

The Limpopo Province has been identifi ed by the NEF as one of the priority regions that it wishes to expand its entrepreneur funding and is calling on aspirant business owners to seize the opportunity to fund their business goals.

NEF Divisional Executive for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and Rural and Community Development, Setlakalane Molepo says the developmental fi nancier wants to increase awareness of its products and benefi t in the province, from the current R950 million funding that has been made available from R250 000 to R75million.

He says, over the last nine years the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) has disbursed nearly R5,5 billion to fund 549 businesses.

The investment has supported over 47 000 jobs and the NEF’s Strategic Projects Fund (SPF) which is mainly focused on green fi elds opportunities is expected to create at least 80 000 jobs.

The Limpopo Province over the period of inception of funding nine years ago has only benefi ted from 5% of the NEF’s funding.

“We would ideally like to see a situation where at least the NEF funding for Limpopo is equivalent to the Stats SA estimated Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution by the Limpopo Province of 7.1%, or more over the next ten years of the NEF’s funding,” says Molepo.

“The NDA also identifi ed key development priorities for the province to be agriculture, mining, tourism, and manufacturing, improved trade and fi nance, SMME development, and infrastructure development.

“Over the years of the NEF’s funding some companies have been funded by us as they fell within the priority sectors of the province and presented solid and bankable business plans,” said Molepo.

The NEF in the last nine years has funded 20 companies in Limpopo.

said: “We want entrepreneurs in Limpopo to come to us with bankable business ideas that require funding. There are various opportunities we believe that entrepreneurs can explore. There are opportunities in mining where Limpopo’s rich mineral deposits include platinum group metals, iron ore, chromium high- and middle-grade coking coal, diamonds, antimony, phosphate and copper, as well as mineral reserves such as gold, emeralds, scheelite, magnetite, vermiculite, silicon and mica. Base commodities such as black granite, corundum and feldspar are also found. Mining contributes to more than a fi fth of the provincial economy,” said NEF Limpopo Province Regional Manager, Rofhiwa Madzivhandila.

For more information regarding NEF funding in the province contact Limpopo Province Regional Manager, Rofhiwa Madzivhandila at 015 294 9200 or 081 465 7476 or email: [email protected].

Slabbert says he is extremely proud of the achievement.

DELEGATES: Some of the delegates present during a workshop to plan a Provincial Tourism Expo at Tzaneen Country Lodge are, from left , Marga Hagens (GTTA), Corinus du Toit (AHI Limpopo), Lanè Barnard (Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce), Fanie Terblanche (Safari and Tourism Operator, Pretroia), Dr Fransie Terblanche (Consultant), Winpie Boshoff (ATKV Eiland) and Kwena Maphoto (CEO, Gteda).

TOURISM EXPO: Photographed during Saturday’s tourism workshop at Country Lodge are, from left , Lukas Groenewald (Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce), Mokgadi Nkoana (GTM), Solet Nel (Tzaneen Chamber), Adri Kruger (Tzaneen Country Lodge) and Christo van der Rheede (CEO, AHI, Pretoria).

A COMPREHENSIVE Tourism Expo will be held in Tzaneen early next year. The focus of the Tourism Expo will be to market the Kruger National Park/Mozambique Corridor via the Limpopo Province and to highlight the many amazing tourism attractions en route, particularly in the Tzaneen area.

During a meeting at Tzaneen Country Lodge on Saturday, a framework for the Tourism Expo was agreed on and a steering committee was appointed to start organizing the Expo. The meeting was facilitated by The President of the Afrikaanse Handels Instituut (AHI), Christo van der Rheede, from Pretoria, and was attended by the Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Tzaneen Tourism Association(GTTA), the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), the Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency (Gteda), the Vice President of the AHI Limpopo, Corinus du Toit, and several other role players in the tourism industry.

The need for a Tourism Expo for the province is well known and well documented. During the Letaba Show earlier this year, the Head

of Marketing of the Kruger National Park, Nhlanhla Nene, expressed his frustration at the low awareness of tourists of the beauty and attractions in the Northern part of Kruger. There is a common misconception amongst most people that the Kruger National Park lies in the Mpumalanga province, while, in fact, the largest Part of Kruger is nestled in the Limpopo Province. Yet, a surprisingly low number of tourists travel through Limpopo to visit the Park. The KNP senior management has already indicated that they want to play a role in the Tourism Expo.

During a meeting with the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee last week, Van der Rheede explained the role of the AHI in stimulating economic activity in the towns where their business chambers operate and informed them of the planned Tourism Expo. It received wide support.

The Expo will focus on all facets of tourism and will also consist of a training and skills transfer component. It is expected to be held in the fi rst half of next year and will, likely, be held at Tzaneen Country Lodge.

SPORT MOPANI HERALD Friday September 19, 2014 7

TRIUMPHANT: Sport challenge soccer champions, Nkowankowa Barcelona.

Barcelona, Stars crowned Nkowankowa Barcelona and Shinning Stars

were crowned soccer and netball champions respectively at Nkowankowa Stadium last Saturday.

Barcelona beat Lenyenye killer ocean 5-1 in the semi-fi nal and proceeded to win 3-1 against Julesburg Development in the fi nals.

Shinning Stars crushed Mokhapa 28-7 in the semifi nals and overcame Mapheto 27-2 in the fi nals.

For their efforts, the winning teams in both soccer and netball received new kits , trophies and gold medals whilst the runners-up in soccer got a kit and silver medals. The runners-up in netball only received silver medals.

The sport challenge was sponsored by Dr Ishmael Maremanyana Nhlangwana, his wife Hendrietha and son Dr Vulombe Nhlangwana as a way of giving back to the community.

It will be a proverbial situation of two bulls in one kraal at the Nyekhetlha ground on Saturday.

The occasion will be the massive premier division encounter between title contestants, Golden Aces and Leswika, as both sides set sights on the coveted title in the ever-exciting Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG)Soccer League.

A draw will not do either side any good as that will mean that log leaders, Manamela Naughty Boys, will literally run away with the championship. An exciting result will be one in the favour of Leswika Classic because they are the only team with a realistic chance of snatching the sweet title from the jaws of “Thimi-ya-Badimo” or “team of the gods”, as Manamela Naughty Boys, is commonly known as.

Rita All Stars is expected to reduce the gap that separates them from the log leaders, Mokomotji Highlanders, when they visit Khujwana Bagdad on Saturday. Mokomotji

will be on a leash this weekend and will haplessly be watching from the side lines as they await their turn next week. At the same time, Mmaphala Peter United will also try to close the gap when they host the dangerous outfi t of Mahlogwe. With the exciting side of Liverpool back in action this weekend, the Super division drama is expected to be more intricate.

Mogoboya Junior Chiefs welcome back their ace mid-fi elder, Joseph “Xavi” Ramatladi from a long spell of suspension when they host Real Madrid at the Moruleng ground on Sunday.

Just like many weekends before, thousands of highly passionate followers of the fabulous KLG Soccer League will cram various sports grounds this weekend to witness the incredible Super and Premier proceedings of this league staged in thesettlements of Lephepane, Lenyenye, Moime, Bokgaga, Khujwana and Thlabine.

Academy retains provincial titleAcademy retains provincial title

CHAMPS: COPA Coca-Cola® Under-15 schools tournament provincial champions, Benny Sports Academy.

Benny Sports Academy retained the COPA Coca-Cola® Under-15 schools tournament provincial title after beating Hudson Ntsanwisi High School 1-0 at Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday.

Academy beat Batjadi Secondary School 2-0 and 4-3 on penalties respectively to reach the fi nal whilst Hudson Ntsanwisi thrashed Manoke High School 1-0 and 3-1 respectively to book a space in the fi nals.

Benny Sports Academy join Robinvale Secondary School (Western Cape), SA Van Wyk High School (Northern Cape), Slindokuhle Secondary School (KwaZulu Natal), Sikhulile Secondary School (Eastern Cape), Clapham High School (Gauteng) and Thlavekisa Secondary School (Mpumalanga) at the National Finals to be held at the King Zwelithini Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal from October 17 to 19.

The ultimate winning school of the 2014 COPA Coca-Cola® football tournament will walk away with the honour of being named the 2014 champion as well as R60 000 to be used towards the development of their school’s educational or sporting facilities.

The second and third place winners will also receive R30 000 and R25 000 respectively.

The 2014 COPA Coca-Cola® schools tournament started in March this year with schools in each of the nine provinces competing at regional level.

The winning schools from the various regions then competed to represent their areas at the respective provincial fi nals, where they ultimately aim to become the provincial champion and represent their provinces at the National Finals of the tournament in next month.

A sad atmosphere engulfed the troubled camp of Golden Aces after their shock 3-1 defeat to local arch-rivals Lephepane Rovers last Saturday at the Nyekhetlha ground.

The disappointment was clearly understandable because Aces needed maximum points to keep their chase for the Premier division title alive. Leaders of the pack, Manamela Naughty Boys were sitting at a comfortable four points gap at the summit of the log table.

Their cause of “Makhema a Khaphamadi”, as Aces s commonly known as, was further undone when their fellow title contestants, Manamela Naughty Boys, slashed Mapantsula by a sharp 6-3 score line. In another signifi cant Premier encounter, Leswika Classic collected maximum points from Khopho All Stars at the Mapantsula ground after a massive 1-0 score. The solitary goal was netted by their new signing LekekeMangena to make manager, Junior Maake, heave a huge sigh of relief.

In the Super division, Mokomotji Highlanders narrowly escaped from the jaws of a lion when they narrowly edged out Khujwana Bagdad 1-0 at the Mokomotji ground. In a game that was bound to end

either in a stalemate or in the favour of Bagdad, it only took a dubious decision by the referee in the last fi ve minutes of the encounter to have Mokomotji Highlanders equalised from the penalty spot.

The thousands of dedicated fanatics of the exciting and fantastic Super and Premier divisions of the KLG Soccer League witnessed a variety of entertaining matches staged at various venues in different communities of this area last weekend:

KLG Premier Division, Saturday results: Khopho All Stars 0-1 Leswika Classic, Royal Celtic 1-0 MM Super Stars, Golden aces 1-3 Lephepane Rovers.

Sunday: Manamela Naughty Boys 6-3 Mapantsula, Mogoboya Junior chiefs 5-2 Ramalema Cosmos, Long Valley 1-4 Bubs.

KLG Super Division, Saturday results: Rita All Stars 5-0 Mamogalefa,Rakoma 2-1 GP United, BokgagaJuventus 1-4 Napscom, Bahlabine 0-4 Mmaphala Peter United, Moime Celtic 1-2 Mahlogwe.

Sunday: Mokomotji Highlanders 1-0 Khujwana Bagdad,Monatic 1-3 Lenyenye Gunners, Bancock 1-2 Carling.
