The Age Of FlexibilityI believe it was 2013 when Barco introduced its light-on-demand option for flexible light output with its FLEX series. In brief, the 20,000 lumens output projector (HDX-W20 FLEX) is able to adjust its light output from 10,000 to 20,000 lumens in 2,000 incremental steps. This was a big deal when it was introduced. This enabled rental companies the flexibility to adjust their light output requirements via one projector rather than having different lumen projectors in their inventory. More critically it helped rental companies save the lamp life with this flexibility and improve their ROI as they could charge clients according to the lumens required for the projects, even though in this case, the the HDX-W20 FLEX, is capable of a maximum 20,000 lumens output.

This has now become a more common theme. Audio systems like the NEXO STM (Scale Through Modularity) deliver a new level of versatility, enabling contractors to design a wide range of systems from just four core modules. More recently we had the privilege of seeing how the LD Curve500 could easily add on more systems as and when required within the same base line. These are fundamentally different from just adding on inventory as the structure of the systems allows the add-ons to become part of the initial inventory with ease and need I say it, flexibility.

This year’s Prolight + Sound Frankfurt saw a number of lighting manufacturers release their hybrid lighting fixtures enabling one lighting fixture to act as a Beam, Spot or Wash thereby giving great flexibility to how the fixtures can be deployed. The MAC Axiom Hybrid by Martin combines Beam and Spot functionality. The GT-1 from GLP as well as PR Lighting’s BWS series offer the same concept.

Rental companies we are certain will enjoy these flexibilities as it allows them to keep a tight rein on their inventory and presumably better ROI where cost savings can be expected in terms of storage, rigging and transportation.

MIPRO MA-708 Triumphs In Red Dot Award

TAIWAN: The popular MA-708 portable wireless PA system by MIPRO was awarded with the Red Dot, the international distinction for high design quality. Participants from 57 nations had registered about 5,200 products and innovations for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016. Only products which set themselves apart considerably through their excellent design receive the sought-after quality seal from the international Red Dot jury.

The MA-708 portable wireless speaker system accommodates a two-way system in its robust plastic enclosure. It is driven by a high-performance Class D amplifier and is easily capable of addressing medium-to large-sized spaces. Also included in the enclosure are several wireless microphone receivers, a mixing unit, a CD/USB player and a Bluetooth interface. The rechargeable battery system plays loud and powerful sound indoor and outdoor and does entirely without cables and can be effortlessly transported using a clever trolley system. Moreover, it includes a storage compartment for two handheld or beltpack transmitters.

With 41 experts from all around the world, who are chosen according to strict rules, the Red Dot Award: Product Design guarantees a very high judging competence: Only freelance designers, design professors and specialised

journalists – but not designers employed at companies potentially participating – are appointed to the jury.

The independent expert panel assesses each entry strictly and fairly, live and on site, according to criteria such as degree of innovation, formal quality, functionality and ecological compatibility. Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Award, commented, “With their performances, the Red Dot winners not only demonstrated an extraordinary design quality, but they also showed that design is an integral part of innovative product solutions.”

4 July 2016 marks the culmination of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016. During the glamorous awards ceremony, the Red Dot: Best of the Best laureates will accept their trophies in front of around 1,200 guests. At the subsequent after-show party “Designers’ Night”, the winners will receive their certificates and celebrate until the early hours in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in the midst of prize-winning products. All award-winning products will be presented in the special exhibition “Design on Stage” for four weeks, before becoming part of the permanent exhibition.

With about 2,000 exhibits from 45 nations, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen displays the complete range of current product design. In the former boiler house of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein coal mine, it presents products that have won the Red Dot on five floors and approximately 4,000 square metres. Every year, the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design informs around 150,000 visitors about current trends and top achievements.

INDIA: Sudarshan PA in Mumbai recently added Allen & Heath’s dLive digital mixing system to its inventory, comprising the flagship S7000 Control Surface with DM64 MixRack, and supplied by Delhi-based distributor, Sun Infonet.

YAMAHA CL And QL Consoles Now Able To Control And Monitor Shure ULX-D Wireless Systems

INTERNATIONAL: Yamaha Pro Audio and Shure Incorporated announced that customers using Yamaha CL and QL Series consoles will be able to control and monitor Shure ULX-D® Digital Wireless Systems (Dante™ enabled ULXD4D Dual Channel Digital Wireless Receivers and ULXD4Q Quad Channel Digital Wireless Receivers), providing the user with significantly enhanced operability.

The seamless integration of Yamaha’s CL/QL Series consoles with Shure’s ULX-D Digital Wireless Systems—which offer uncompromising 24-bit audio clarity and efficient RF performance—equips audio professionals everywhere with the intuitive tools they need to handle sound reinforcement applications of any size. The newly-available control parameters will include monitoring of battery, RF reception strength, antenna status, frequency and audio level, and full control of gain,mute, and channel name assignment.

This announcement marks the third stage of the Shure/Yamaha collaboration, with control and monitoring of Shure ULXD4D and ULXD4Q receivers directly from Yamaha CL and QL series console touch panels, as of the V4.0 firmware update scheduled for release this month.

Strategic Partnership Between French Loudspeaker Manufacturers

INTERNATIONAL: French loudspeaker manufacturers Active Audio and APG have signed a strategic alliance. Both brands will remain independent in their respective activities – and through distribution channels – Active Audio will continue to focus on the Public Address market while APG will still cater for live events and large venue installations. The decision to join forces will instead foster critical synergies between both companies in R&D, production, financing and ultimately global reach. As a result, Régis Cazin, steps up as CEO of both Active Audio and APG with immediate effect. Active Audio will now hold 60% of APG shares while APG’s historical shareholders, Jean-Luc Moncel, Philippe Frarier and Grégory Dapsanse, will hold the majority of the remaining shares. Commenting on the agreement, Régis Cazin said, “Although Active Audio becomes a major shareholder in APG, we recognise APG’s strong reputation in the market, backed by many dealers and end users who have invested a lot of trust in the company. We wanted APG’s historical shareholders to remain significant shareholders in order to be actively involved in both strategic and operational decisions”, he explains. “We are adamant to preserve both brands and their respective strengths.” Both companies will also keep their existing network of distributors and capitalise on their respective local relays to promote the other brand where only one company is active in a given territory.

This alliance is the result of a common vision and strategy: Active Audio was looking for external growth while APG France was seeking an investor or industrial partner in order to strengthen its resources. With this alliance, both companies reinforce their position as a challenger to current industry leaders. Both companies quickly found a number of strategic and operational synergies, with complementary product lines and virtually no overlap: a great opportunity for existing distributors of both brands which will also benefit end users. According to Cazin, “sound designers have to manage both the low and high audio power levels in their jobs: With Active Audio products going up to 95dB range and APG’s above this level, we are ideally positioned to offer a whole range of solutions to cater for every need.” Grégory Dapsanse, who becomes Marketing and Business Development Director for APG, will continue to define the product strategy for the brand. Drawing a parallel between both companies, he commented: “The similarities between us are quite amazing: Not only do we have a similar size and structure, but our philosophy and approach of the acoustic world is a perfect match.” Both companies will keep all existing staff. In fact, in light of this alliance, Active Audio and APG have already started recruiting key personnel to support this new business strategy. Last month, APG hired two engineers (support and product) and are in the process of recruiting a sales manager dedicated to the French market as well as a sales assistant, while Active Audio has recruited two people to support their distribution channel and communications. Summing up this announcement, Cazin said: “I am confident that the strong electroacoustic savoir-faire of our companies, along with the synergies produced by this alliance, will help us continue to develop the specific technologies and solutions that the industry can expect from us and set us aside from the competition.”

EVENT: Launch Of Yamaha Rivage PM10 In Singapore

The Yamaha Rivage PM10 digital mixing system was first revealed at InterBee in 2014 and started shipping in the third-

quarter of 2015. It has been more than 10 years since the Yamaha PM1D and PM5D were introduced and the new RIVAGE PM10 significantly increases the quality and versatility of the console. 19th April saw the much awaited and anticipated console being officially launched in Singapore.

The launch held at Millian Singapore, located at St James Power Station, saw approximately 200 guests comprising of Houses of Worship, SIs, Rental and production houses, venue owners, educational institutes and consultants, eagerly taking in all the features of the console. Highlighting the PM10’s key functions & features was Andy Coper, Manager, Pro Audio Application Engineering, Yamaha R&D Centre London.

“With the PM10 we are using a new generation platform that consists of new structures and network devices. In

addition we collaborated with Rupert Neve and TC Electronics on some of the processors to offer the best possible sound,” said Chihaya “Chick” Hirai, ASEAN PA Business Director, Yamaha Music (Asia) Private Ltd.

“The console would feel at home in a theatre environment where there is a need for many channels. Similarly a Broadcast environment or even in a

House of Worship,” said Chick.

Yamaha Music (Asia) Private Limited adds, “You will also notice that the PM10 is an open protocol system that offers sound engineers the flexibility to add other brands/equipment via different digital format and most open networkable system is Dante Network.”

The PM10 allows for two sound engineers to simultaneously operate the console,

which is great for big productions like in a theatre or even in Houses of Worship.

Indeed the PM10 can be considered as another major milestone for Yamaha. The system is comprised of the CS-R10 control surface, DSP-R10 DSP engine, RPio622 I/O rack, three types of RY cards, and two types of HY cards. Together as a system, it provides the flexibility to configure and ideally match the scale and functional requirements of any audio application.

The console features newly-developed Hybrid Microphone Preamplifiers. The analog section is totally new as well, both in terms of components and overall design, achieving extraordinarily pure, natural sound. The digital stage includes impeccable models of the Rupert Neve Designs (RND) transformer circuitry and acclaimed SILK processing, created with original Yamaha VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modelling) technology. The SILK processing feature even includes selectable “RED” and “BLUE” characteristics, and a continuously variable “TEXTURE” knob that facilitates sonic shaping right at the input stage, adding musical sparkle or power as required.

The channel EQ and dynamics have been significantly upgraded with three newly developed algorithms plus the classic Yamaha “Legacy” algorithm. The new “Precise”

algorithm includes Q parameters on the low and high shelving filters that allow filter overshoot to be flexibly controlled for added musical impact. An “Aggressive” algorithm has been designed for the most musical response, and a “Smooth” algorithm offers smooth, natural control while retaining the fundamental character of the source.

Two Dynamics stages are provided, each functioning as a gate, compressor, ducker, or de-esser as required. Two compressor types are included: “Legacy Comp” features standard Yamaha digital console compressor characteristics, and “Comp260,” a VCM model of a popular analog comp/limiter from the mid-70s.

A total of 45 plug-ins are available for creative processing, with substantially increased processing power. New and noteworthy are plug-ins created in collaboration with Rupert Neve Designs, TC Electronic, and Eventide.

Collaboration with Rupert Neve Designs has resulted in the “Rupert EQ 773,” “Rupert Comp 754,” “Rupert EQ 810,” and “Rupert Comp 830,” all VCM models of Neve designed outboard devices from the 70s and 80s. All four models deliver the gloriously musical vintage outboard sound still favoured by many discerning engineers. The alliance with TC Electronic has resulted in the inclusion of two new reverb plug-ins: the “VSS4HD” room simulation reverb that offers a multitude of reflection settings with musical-

sounding reverb processing capabilities, and the “NON LIN2” plug-in that can function as an envelope-filtered gate reverb without requiring a trigger. With Eventide, Yamaha will add the H3000-Live Ultra-Harmonizer as a future standard inclusion.

Of course operability has been given the attention it deserves too. Yamaha’s familiar Selected Channel section is implemented in full, allowing all parameters of the selected channel to be directly and intuitively controlled. There are also two large LCD touch screens that provide logical continuity with the faders below, offering the same operability as the high regarded Centralogic interface in 12-channel groups. In addition to this dual interface hybrid operation style, horseshoe-ring encoder position indicators, refined panel layout, and a number of other details contribute to significantly improved overall operability.

New features extend the usefulness of the scene memory. “Isolate” makes it possible to specify entire channel modules, including EQ and dynamics libraries, etc., that will be protected from recall operations without altering the Recall Safe settings. This will be of great value in situations where scene memory is used heavily. The Overlay filter can be “overlaid” on a current mix to apply temporary offsets to fader and mix/matrix send levels independently from scene recall. The Overlay filter will prove its value in situations that require sudden changes plus the ability to easily revert to the original settings.

The CS-R10 control surface and DSP-R10 DSP engine are connected via a dedicated CAT5e ring “Console Network.” The DSP engine connects to the RPio622 I/O racks via the newly developed TWINLANe ring network using multi-mode optical fiber. The fact that both networks use simple ring connections facilitates redundancy and the highest possible reliability.

TWINLANe is an original Yamaha protocol that can handle up to 400 96 kHz audio channels over distances of up to 300 meters with low latency and redundancy for high reliability. Up to two DSP-R10 DSP engines and eight RPio622 I/O racks can be connected in a single ring.

Connection to a computer for multitrack recording as well as to CL or QL series consoles and other external equipment can be made via a Dante network. Dante, works ideally with TWINLANe to create an exceptionally flexible, reliable system overall.

After lunch, guests were given an overview and demonstration of a range of Nexo loudspeakers namely, STM (Scale Through Modularity), Geo S12 cabinets, ID24 compact loudspeaker and Geo M6 compact line array system.

products and services increasingly commoditized, and getting ahead seems harder. How do you grow, make money, and not collapse under your own weight? There are three key best practices that will keep your rental business vibrant.

Learn How To OversellIn order to grow, you must sell more than you did the period prior, consistently. If customers would cooperate by not scheduling their events at the same time, then this task is easy. However, peaks and valleys are the norm for most of us. The trick is to make the busy periods consistently larger without sacrificing quality. This requires a fearless commitment to new business alongside a dynamic operation that can adjust to fluctuations in workload. Growing, profitable rental businesses rely heavily on outsourced staff and equipment in peak periods in conjunction with just-in-time hiring and purchasing to accommodate this type of growth.

Transparent ProcessesAs companies grow, the tendency is for the details of a project to reside in the Sales process while Operations to

If you have great processes and an impressive brand, but can’t exceed capacity, then the business won’t grow. Eventually the weight of existing infrastructure will eat into profits as well. Finally, if you know how to oversell and have a great value proposition, but struggle with operational efficiency, then your business will make costly mistakes that will undermine your overall efforts. You will rely on second efforts to do things well, and that is not sustainable.

APG: One Steady Step At A Timeby Thomas Richard Prakasam

Of late the APG name might be sounding more familiar with the industry in this part of the world. Considering that APG had set up an APG South East

Asia office in late November 2014 in Singapore and another North East Asia office in Hong Kong in April of 2015, the company has certainly set its sight in growing its presence in the region.

This was not the case in the early days. APG roots were founded in 1978 in France. In 1991, the company became part of the SCV Group in France. The brand changed hands again in 2004 when there was a management buyout by the people who were most passionate about the brand and its solutions. In the early years, the brand was more known in France as it was purely concentrated in the domestic market. It had, however built quite a reputation as generally it was considered the third most recognised and accepted professional audio brand in the country.

The 2004 buyout changed the outlook for APG though. Heavy investment in R&D brought about innovative products from the company and the time was ripe for an international foray for the brand. 12 years later, 40% of APG's business is international with of course most of the business coming from Europe. Asia is the next leg of their strategic development.

ETA had the opportunity to meet with the affable Grégory Dapsanse who is one of the shareholder's of APG, together with the man helming APG SEA, a familiar name indeed, Sebastian Song, to get them to share their views about the company and the opportunities. Also sitting in was a key member of APG SEA, Imran Hariht, Sales Director.

The APG website Home page has these words: A real passion for sound, combined with strict scientific rigour, constitutes the foundation of the wide range of products that forged the reputation of the legendary "APG sound". Our goal from the beginning has not changed: to provide products, tools and services that exceed the requirements of both the customer and the public.

Grégory an Engineer himself, is keen to highlight that this is what sets the company apart. “Innovative and Flexible are the key words in our company.

The way we want to innovate is to create different products with a lot of features, functionalities, offering maximum performance. We look at our solutions from the creative aspect in terms of ergonomics and technical to offer the best possible solution to customers.”

Grégory brings up as an example the APG SC25 source column speaker. “This column speaker is optimized for acoustic directivity. Our design offers great acoustic control.” Imran steps in to highlight how this speaker has made an impact in a local installation, Jcube, which is a shopping mall in the west of Singapore that also features Singapore’s first Olympic-size ice rink. “The Mall had an issue with getting people to clear the ice rink using the previous speakers. This was due to external noise interference as well as clarity for those in the ice rink. We brought in the SC25 column speakers to test it out. Amazingly the first announcement using the speakers had the desired effect. It was clear and could be heard from wherever one was in the rink. What shocked the management of the Mall was that we only needed to use two of the column speakers complimented with two subs to help them achieve their objective,” said a pleased Imran.

“Our solutions are maximised for flexibility as well. We have our built-in DSP amplifiers but we can also work with external processors or combine our processor with other brand amplifiers. We do this, as we want to ensure that our clients get the best out of the systems they want to work with. We offer adaptive configuration for flexibility with our solutions,” emphasised Grégory.

Why The Offices In Asia?“Simply to show our commitment to the industry in this part of the world. APG SEA and APG North East Asia are an extension of us. When people talk to these two entities they are talking and dealing with APG. We believe this will instil confidence but more importantly it will help us understand the needs in this part of the world and customise our solutions accordingly,” said Grégory.

The offices in Asia also offer service support for clients. “We are able to support our clients in the installation process or for tuning of the systems and if necessary design of the systems,” said Sebastian. Currently APG SEA works with System Integrators and Consultants and are on the lookout for partners within the region to help them grow the business. “Passion for the brand and what APG is trying to achieve is important when we look for partners.”

The APG SEA office features a nice large demo room as well. The ultimate aim is to offer logistics and a full service centre in the near term at both the regional offices. “We are still the new kid on the block in this market. We are

slowly but surely building up our momentum. Today we have several nice references in different market segments which is actually very representative of what we can do – clubs, theatres, performing arts, houses of worship, sports venue and so forth. The APG SEA office has our solutions installed other than in Singapore, in Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand already,” highlights Grégory.

“I would like to point out that this is because we have people with experience running the company and who are as passionate as us. They are committed to our cause as we are to theirs.”

“I would also want to add, that we consider educating the industry a top priority. Not just our product training but in bringing a global perspective to project challenges and advising on methods to resolve issues or ways to attain their objectives. In that aspect, training will play a role in our offices in the region.”

The Uniline is APG's flagship solution. It is a modular line array that features high power and long throw which offers its flexibility to be used from very small spaces to stadiums, keeping in line with the mantra of flexibility and innovation. At Frankfurt, it was announced that Active Audio and APG had signed a strategic alliance. Active Audio will hold 60% of APG shares whilst Jean-Luc Moncel, Philippe Frarier and Grégory Dapsanse, will hold the majority of the remaining shares. The decision to join forces will foster critical synergies between both companies in R&D, production, financing and ultimately global reach, thus furthering the ambitions of APG in becoming a name to be reckoned with in this part of the world.

Millian Singapore Is A Nightclub And A Concert Venue

Millian Singapore is located at the St James Power Station which features a number of music and entertainment spaces near the HarbourFront area.

The 950sqm space is operated by A-Live Entertainment Pte Ltd and had its soft launch in February this year and is beginning to build up momentum.

As a nightclub, Millian operates on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays offering DJ music. The other days are open for booking by concert organisers who are looking for an intimate space.

The focal point in the venue is the fairly large stage where the DJ spins his music or acts perform during their concert. There is a bar counter on the extreme right of the stage, with an open concept floor space. The space at the extreme end facing the stage is elevated and features comfortable sofas and tables, which are meant for VIPs.

Taking responsibility for specifying the equipment were Akira Yamauchi and Simon Su of CLEF Productions Pte Ltd. Akira Yamauchi highlights, “As the space had a dual purpose, we instinctively recommended the NEXO GEO

S12 complemented with the Nexo RS15 subs as the main sound system, as they provide the sonic quality and punch required. We have had much experience with the S12s and they have always delivered without fail. In this particular environment, in Nightclub mode it provides the oomph needed for the dance music and in Concert mode, it delivers the required punch.”

The stage features four units of GEO S12’s hung each on the left and right side with 3 units of RS15s taking care of the low frequencies. A further four units of GEO S12s

are hung on the opposite side of the stage as a pair each. This helps to ensure that all the audio is concentrated at the space in front of the stage where the audience would congregate.

Complementing the speakers is the Yamaha CL5 console which offers easy control and reliability. “The large rig hung high above the centre of the floor space features mainly DTS and Martin Beam and Profile lighting fixtures controlled via an Avolites Quad with fader wings, thus ensuring that we are able to create the right ambience in whatever mode we are operating in,” added Simon Su, of CLEF Productions.

“This is a conservation building, which means we are not allowed to touch the structure. We had to work around the space and specify a system that is able to handle a heavy rock band or a pop band. With the Nexo S12, the venue is able to handle any genre of music. It is compact, easy to handle and or course the support from Yamaha is excellent,” said a delighted Yamauchi.

Ryohei Sakai of A-Live Entertainment adds, “During our soft opening we brought in the band Noisemaker from Japan and they had a blast with the sound and light system installed. The crowd certainly got pumped up.”

“Our resident DJ Martin, who is Japanese but had been spinning in America for 8 years, is equally pleased with the watts the speakers put out. DJ Martin can be best described as an Open Format DJ, who works with the guests’ moods and adjusts accordingly. Thus a versatile sound system suits his style best,” said Sakai.

EV, Dynacord & Bosch Work Out @ Virgin Active’s Flagship Health Club

DRM Audio Visual designs and installs the AV system

When Virgin Active started on their showcase health club in Collins Street, Melbourne, DRM Audio Visual were selected to provide a

comprehensive AV solution. As Virgin Active Health Clubs are in the top-segment in their industry when it comes to quality, DRM were very excited about the prospect of designing and installing an audio-visual system.

“The end-user was very clear with their expectations when it came to AV systems. They wanted a simple, straightforward solution that was easy to use,” said Jarrod Bell, from DRM Audio Visual. “The audio system was designed to be seamless. We aimed to ensure that there is no loss or gain of volume as you move around the room.”

Jarrod noted that the club has multiple levels and very different spaces, acoustics and sound requirements for various activities. This meant that the choice and number of speakers in each zone and their amplification had to vary to suit the room and its use. It also meant that zoning and control over audio were critical. One of Jarrod’s key aims was to develop an AVC system where the volume of ambient noise would automatically adjust the volume of the sound system in that particular area.

“Each audio zone in the health club has different volume settings. In addition microphones have been used in conjunction with the Electro-Voice speakers. These

microphones pick-up the level of ambient noise and adjust the decibel output of the speakers to ensure that the audio

can be heard over the sound in the zone. We have also programmed a maximum decibel threshold to ensure that

the audio volume does not go too loud.”

In the reception area, as you enter the club, the first speakers that can be noticed are the uniquely-shaped Electro-Voice EVID 4.2 4-inch surface-mount speakers. These serve to provide audio in the entrance hall while smaller halls and corridors use Bosch LBC 3951. The same Bosch speakers have also been employed in the toilets and washroom areas due to their moisture resistant characteristics. Industry favourite, the EVID 4.2 ceiling-mount speakers have also been used in larger areas. A paging system has been installed in reception to allow staff to access the audio systems across the club and make voice announcements if required. An Apple iPad serves as the touch control panel.

On the second level, Electro-Voice ZX1i-100 8-inch loudspeakers are featured in the open workout area. These hard-hitting horn speakers were chosen to ensure audio would be heard across the large open space, even when full with club members.

A number of specialised activity spaces are located on this level including the cycle studio. Audio here is provided with the help of two Dynacord TS400 vertical arrays and a 2000 W EV ETX 15-inch powered sub-woofer, which is neatly incorporated into the wall. The speakers were chosen specifically for their high-quality and performance. The TS400 vertical arrays are well known for their throw and are well suited for the depth of this room, while the powerful ETX sub provides the thumping low frequencies to get legs pumping.

The cycle studio additionally features a Panasonic projector for video projection and an AMX control pad that allows the trainer to select the music source and control the volume. “The AMX keypad has been configured and programmed by DRM Audio Visual and it ties in with Virgin Active’s MyRide system which is being used in this space,” explains Jarrod. “The keypad allows the trainer to select the source music at the touch of a button or plug in his own source using the Aux-in port. The provision of this keypad takes into account the client’s desire of having a simple, straightforward and easy to use system.”

A number of group exercise studios are also scattered throughout the gym. These feature a stage area at the front and a large area for classes such as BodyPump, BodyAttack and Kickboxing. High-energy audio in three of these spaces is handled by four EV Innovations EVF 1122s

12-inch speakers, with 60 degrees by 40 degrees dispersion with ZX1 speakers serving as monitors for the stage. EVF speakers are usually found in larger installations such as churches, exhibition halls and performance stages, but were used here to cope with the required sound volume and projection.

Jarrod talks about the choice of speakers: “The audio system was designed to be seamless. We aimed to ensure that there is no loss or gain of volume as you move around the room. For this reason we chose the Electro-Voice speakers as their dispersion was best suited for the space.”

The entire audio system at the Virgin Active Health Club is controlled from a single control room. This features three Electro-Voice EV NetMax N8000 DSPs for processing. Amplification duties are performed by Paramus 1225T and 1240T amplifiers. Electro-Voice EV CPS 4.10 amplifiers are also employed where necessary.

Wireless mic communication for instructors is covered with Electro-Voice RE 2 belt-packs integrated with Fitness-Audio instructor sets. Six Electro-Voice RE 2 wireless receivers manage the signals in the rack room.

Additionally an AMX NetLinx NX-2200 is used for control together with software modules programmed by DRM. The AMX product and the EV NetMax DSP System Controller work together in tandem.

From all accounts the project satisfied all parties including club patrons. Jarrod states: “The installation is complete and operational. We think we have met the brief set forth by the client and have not had any complaints.”

Lighting plays an incredibly important role in enhancing the magic world of theme parks. It is far more than a tool to illuminate or decorate, but a key to connecting

people with a fantasy realm. With theme-park experiences growing day by day and new digital tools developing fast, interactivity is transforming lighting designs in modern theme parks. Planet J*, located at the Sands Cotai Central in Macau, has taken revolutionary steps, putting together trendsetting interactive elements and a sophisticated lighting control system, including ETC Selador Desire luminaires, Source Four LED fixtures, and Unison Mosaic and Paradigm architectural systems, to provide visitors the world’s first live-action role-play theme park.

“The lighting will change as players interact with their surroundings,” says Derek Warrick, the lighting and systems design manager from StandardVision, the company that designed and specified the lighting system for the Planet J project. “This means a lot of programming and interaction between computer systems. It also means that the park will look different from minute to minute, so you will get a unique visit every time.”

x7 Color System blending seven LED colors, embedded into scenic elements to complement the ambient lighting fixtures. “The x7 Color System provides such a full colour spectrum, that people walking through the park look great, and we didn’t have too many surprises when we lit the scenery,” describes Warrick. “They are very well designed!”

Planet J has hundreds of ETC LED luminaires installed, including 483 Source Four LED Lustr+, 575 Desire D60 Vivid, 255 Desire D22 Lustr+, and 37 Desire D40 Vivid fixtures. “These fixtures have great light output and colour rendering,” Warrick explains. “The RDM capability saved countless hours and days of work.”

The control system is a mixture of Unison Mosaic and Paradigm architectural controllers utilizing DMX and DALI protocols across 92 universes and 16 loops. “The mix of both Paradigm and Mosaic controllers provides us a flexible

yet robust system. We haven’t put a large demand on the systems yet as interactivity is still being programmed, but I have faith that everything will work as intended,” says Warrick. A lot of interactivity comes from the game interfaces. This means final programming can only be tested when the park is fully operational.

Warrick is no stranger to ETC products. He has used ETC lights and control systems over the past 15 years and summarizes: “I have been extremely happy with both the products and support of the staff at ETC.”

The Dai Show Theater, is developed by Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group and located within the luxurious Xishuangbanna International Resort

in Yunnan Province, China. The theater is shaped like a bamboo hat, an embodiment of unique Dai culture, and has already gained landmark status in the autonomous region. Besides the architectural beauty it exudes, the Dai Show Theater boasts advanced technical and technological equipment to complement a permanent 75-minute acrobatic water spectacle orchestrated by one of the world’s top theatre directors, Franco Dragone – best known for the Cirque du Soleil shows. Since its opening late last year, visitors from around the world have been entertained by the meticulously choreographed presentations combining aerial, aquatic and immersive stage performances, as well as realistic projection mapping using Christie M Series projectors that create an exceptional visual experience. The canvas was the stage floor and the projectors painted it beautifully with lifelike images that complemented the fluid movements of performers.

Eight Christie DS+14K-M 3DLP® projectors, each boasting a brightness of 14,000 center lumens, have been installed above the theater to ensure maximum effect. Christie’s trusted partner, Wincomn Technology, undertook the crucial role of design, systems integration, installation,

commissioning, operation and maintenance of the projection system at this state-of-the-art performance venue.

“The end-user had very high expectations of the projection system, and we had to deploy our most experienced teams to ensure that the high standards expected in terms of systems design, stagecraft and artistic effects were perfectly executed, so that the vivid and realistic images can immerse the audience in this mythical world. The Christie DS+14K-M projectors deployed had also performed excellently throughout the installation and commissioning phase,” said Tony Chen, general manager, Wincomn Technology. “We are therefore very excited and pleased to witness how amazing and visually captivating the show at the Dai Show Theater is, and to receive the ‘Excellent Supplier’ banner awarded by Wanda Group.”

Chen said the Christie DS+14K-M projectors were selected due to their ability to clearly display images with great details in high resolutions and produce the bright and vibrant images needed for the show. “We complemented the Christie DS+14K-Ms with projector yokes and the latest VYV tracking system; in the end, only eight projectors were required to make the show a success, instead of 20 units originally planned,” he added.

The stage was transformed into a mystical jungle where a love story between a city boy captivated by the beauty of princess Dai, the rainforest goddess unfolded, as depicted in Dai cultural mythology. The M Series projectors enhanced the stage’s existing props to create different scenarios and special effects to imitate a live experience of wind, rain and thunder. At one point, the stage was filled with water to mimic the effect of a heavy downpour – ripples and projections of raindrops were created using visual effects. The combination resulted in a truly immersive experience for the audience.

Protec Returns To Rock’n’roll With A Triple Whammy

Perfectly executed lighting and visual systems create the electrifying ambience for all the concerts

The company, who until recently, has focussed mainly on corporate events having taken a sabbatical from rock and roll for a year, made a dramatic U-turn on

March ’16 to support three concerts in the UAE including Nicky Minaj and the Autism Rocks Festival in Dubai that featured Flo Rida and Tyga. Protec also provided the lights for the very first Korean cultural convention that took place in Abu Dhabi’s du Arena on March 25th featuring performances by K-Pop artistes, boy group BTS, Taeyeon from the group Girls’ Generation, Kyuhyun from Super Junior, Double S 301, hip-hop group Monsta X, girl group Spica and pop star Ailee.

The Nicky Minaj concert organised by the newly formed 117Live, headed by Thomas Oveson (who was previously with Done Events) was held on March 25th at Dubai’s latest entertainment venue – named Autism Rocks Arena. Nicky Minaj is a performer who knows her craft and her fans inside out. For an hour, she was 100 percent present, although she admitted to toning down for Dubai.

Protec provided lighting, video and rigging for the show. Working closely with Nicky’s LD – Kathy Beer and Video

Engineer Daunt’e Kenner, the production was as good as it gets. “I have been with her since last year and this is my third time in Dubai and my first time with Protec. Protec is a great company with great gear, lovely crew and everything went swimmingly. I would definitely work with Protec again!” said Kathy. She added, “As with anything we had to make a few changes because all the communication was done via email but the guys were quick to respond and the changes were made without fuss and with great speed. We were also able to end rehearsal early last night which I always love.”

Protec Video’s biggest challenge was getting the trim height for the main screen just right, to avoid the risers from cutting into the bottom of the screen, and the top of the screen getting in the way of the back LX fixtures. A total of 158 sq.m off Protec’s 6mm and 154 sq.m of Protec’s 9mm Mambo LED panels were used for the main stage. The Imag screens for the main stage were set in portrait and the content started initially in 16x9 format using part of the screen, which then changed to full screen portrait to accept the live camera feed. Nicky’s Video Engineer Kenner said, “This is my first tour with Nicky, about my tenth time

in Dubai and my second time with Protec and you guys are great. When I arrived everything was set up the way it needed to be and there were no issues. I literally plugged it in and it works”.

Protec’s Project Manager – Mark Battle summed it up for us when he said, “The production for this gig worked out very well from a technical and logistical point of view. The site was laid out very well, there was plenty of room in the backstage area for all vehicles from different aspects of the production and personnel to move around with ease without getting in each other’s way. The stage was large enough with big wings and a large enough area behind the backdrop of the stage to move a festival production around with ease. We had five days to build the entire rig which was ample time and made the build very relaxed.

Meanwhile, the same evening Nicky Minaj was performing in Dubai, in the du Arena on Yas Island, Protec was working on the lighting (around 350 fixtures made up of Clay Paky Mythos, Sharpy profiles and washes, Stormy, A-LEDA K10 B-EYE, Molefrays and Gladiator spots that were run on Grand MA2 full size desks) and rigging, for another concert where thousands of fans, mostly girls, from across the country and around the region gathered at the venue for another first. KCON, the world’s biggest K-pop festival made its way to the Middle East for the first time on Friday, March 25 put together by Flash Entertainment.

The K-Pop artists who performed at the concert included BTS, TaeYeon from Girls Generation, Kyuhyun from Super Junior, Double S 301, Ailee, Monsta X and SPICA. The convention showcased different aspects of the Korean culture and went down a treat in the Middle East. Over the past few years, the spread of South Korean entertainment culture also known as the Korean wave or the ‘Hallyu’ movement has swept across various countries, the Middle East being no exception.

Back in Dubai a week later, 117Live hosted the Autism Rocks festival on April 1st featuring American hip-hop artiste Flo Rida and rapper Tyga. The duo took to the stage at the end of the family day to mark Autism Awareness Month. Both artistes were at the top of their game and the crowds that came in support of autism awareness were treated to high energy performances.

After the Nicky Minaj show Protec had to change the lighting plot to suit the Autism Rocks Festival plan but Arron Russ, (Protec’s lighting designer & HOD) also designed the lighting for Flo Rida and was able to utilise the same rigging plan that was used for Nicky Minaj. This meant that the changeover between the two shows was fairly seamless.

The only thing that put a dampener (literally) on the proceedings, was the weather. It rained on the Thursday night before the Autism Rocks gig which meant that certain precautions had to be taken in order to keep all the electrical equipment dry. All the lights in the rig and the back video wall were fine as the stage was water proof. The only challenge was to keep the front truss and the lights on the ‘thrust’ dry. Protec’s Project Manager – Mark Battle explained, “We had to use plastic sheeting over all of this which worked, even though it was quite windy at times. When we arrived on the show day and everything was soaking wet, it turned out that we had only lost one light due to water damage. The other challenge was that it was also exposed to the wind and sand/dust. The large Imag video screens that we had on either side of the downstage wings had to be monitored very closely. At the end of the day however, it was another perfectly executed gig, with no more rain to dampen anyone’s spirits.

Anugerah Meletop Era 2016 Brings The House Down At The CIDB Convention Center

Fans of talented performers waited eagerly outside the convention center with placards in their hands. Music was played aloud as the crowd waited for the arrival

of artists and singers. Anugerah Meletop Era 2016 (AME 2016) which happens annually, is an award show developed to award talented performers based on votes submitted by fans. With a line-up of artists such as Akim & The Majistret (Winner of Anugerah Juara Lagu 30), Dato' Siti Nurhaliza, Jaclyn Victor and many more, the award show saw a huge crowd on 24th February 2016 at CIDB Convention Center, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Aside from the crowd, RCF speakers were used for the venue’s Front of House. A total of 12 RCF TT55 units where hung from a truss system with 6 on each side to provide a wide area of sound coverage. Placed at the ground level were none other than TTS56-A. Known for its ability to

throw sound at a long distance, 6 units were placed outside of the CIDB to create the hype and excitement for the fans. MJ Event Management who had done many huge events such as Anugerah Juara Lagu 30 and Maharaja Lawak Mega 2016, received the opportunity to work with Era.FM to supply and support this AME 2016 award show.

Mohamad Firdaues, MJ's System Engineer who had been in the AV field for at least 7 years was one of the main staff to ensure that the systems were running according to plan. "I have been working with MJ for about 7 years. It has been always exciting and thrilling to work with the company. Some of the projects that I have worked in were Anugerah Juara Lagu, Maharaja Lawak Mega and many more," commented Firdaues, on his years of experience and projects that he had covered.

With regards to the AME 2016 setup Firdaues had this to share. "For this event we decided to go with RCF Speakers especially the TT Series. Around 46 units were used in this event. We always enjoyed the sound produced by the RCF TT Series, we had done it in many events and we still prefer to use them. 12 units of TT55 were used in Front of House with 6 units of TTS56 to balance out the treble with bass. These helped us to blast music outside of the convention center. As for the stage, 12 units of RCF TT55, 8 units of RCF TT33 and 8 units of RCF TTS56 were used. We divided them equally on both side of the stage to provide maximum throw and coverage. We tested the system during rehearsal, and indeed we made the right choice, the sound was clear and was able to punch through the crowd. I like the TT series, because it is easy for me to setup. The sound is clear and it’s a great product.”

Aside from the speakers, that night’s event, saw the use of 8 handheld Sennheiser G3 500 series as the event's

main vocal microphones. Front of House sound monitoring was handled by the SSL500 Plus Live console. Jim, the sound monitor engineer operating on the SSL500 Live Console, had recently acquainted himself with the SSL300 Live console when he was the monitor engineer at the Anugerah Juara Lagu 30 event. "Definitely more familiar with the console," said Jim when asked if he was used to the console. "I would just say there are more faders and channels to monitor. It's a bigger console compared to the 300," he stated.

With a total of 18 awards given out that night such as "Anugerah Drama Meletop", "Anugerah Artist Lawak Meletop", "Anugerah Lagu Meletop" just to name a few, the event was a success for both MJ Event Management and Era.FM.

Optocore backbone helps transport pristine audio around the stadium

Ceremonies at the South Asian Games 2016, held at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.

SOUND.COM, constructed a robust digital network around a redundant Optocore backbone, spanning six nodes, to transport pristine audio around the stadium.

Since managing sound for The Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi, SOUND.COM has gained the reputation of being a specialist in providing advanced audio infrastructures for major ceremonies and has taken major sporting events to the next level in India, including The Indian Premier League, Indian Super League and National Games 2011 & 2015.

The event management duties for South Asian Games were handled by Encompass Events for whom this was a complete new challenge.

The opening ceremony was a 180-minute spectacle managed by the Encompass core team, while the Games were officially declared open by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ceremonies have earned the distinction of being one of the biggest ever sporting extravaganzas of the North East and have provided an excellent showcase of the region's rich cultural and natural heritage. 4500 participants, including 2600 athletes from eight nations — Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India — participated in 22 disciplines across the 12-day Games, in the two cities of Guwahati and Shillong.

The primary audio source was fed via AES to all amplifiers, thus delivering astounding audio quality that remained pristine across the turnkey sound system.

Explaining the layout, SOUND.COM MD, Warren Dsouza, stated: “The audio system was designed in the round, with the stadium divided into six nodes — FOH, North, South, East, West and Monitors in a redundant loop.”

An analogue signal driven by Dolby/Lake processors acted as the secondary back-up and ARX line drivers served as the third back-up system. The Dolby/Lake processors served two purposes — its primary job was a switcher from AES to Analog in case of a problem with the digital network and its secondary function was to convert AES signals to analog wherever needed.

At these particular ceremonies all the VIP tribunes and Athletes Oath podiums were picked up off the Optocore devices from the west node and routed (via Optocore YG2 cards) straight to the Yamaha M7CL console that served as the main mixing console, whilst another Yamaha console was used as the back-up desk. The performances themselves were mixed on a Soundcraft VI6 console.

The X6R-FX provided the primary interfaces with Optocore DD4MR-FX at FOH. “We interfaced the Optocore devices to the Soundcraft and Yamaha consoles. Signals were sent through the Optocore matrix through various nodes and Athletes Oath speech microphones,” continued Dsouza. “The Prime Minister’s VIP Tribune speeches were picked up from the X6R-FX 16 Mic devices to the Soundcraft and Yamaha desks. The DD32R had AES audio signals fed into

each of the amplifiers and in some places converted from AES to analogue for audio feeds.

“The closing ceremony had the VI6 interfaced to the stage boxes via [Optocore’s new] M12 MADI bridges at the Monitor/Stage node, and into the VI6 through the DD2FR.”

Summing up, he said the ceremonies had been a resounding success with a perfect blend of technology, creativity, culture, music and entertainment. “Overall the event enjoyed fantastic audio quality, with a robust integration of the digital audio network thanks to Optocore. By keeping it simple, with industry standard protocols, just made everything so easy.”
