CHAPTER 1

MILITARY SYMBOLS

Section I. INTRODUCTION

1. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

a. The purpose of this manual is to describe the military symbols and abbreviations authorized for use by all echelons in the preparation of operation plans and orders, reports, maps and overlays, and related activities.

6. Some of the symbols in this manual, such as the basic weapons symbols, represent departures from pre vious practices. Such departures were necessary in view of certain phases of the standardization program of the Department of Defense, which were considered 1 in the revision of the manual.

c. This manual does not include all the symbols for all units, organizations, or installations, but prescribes a uniform pattern to be followed in indicating the dif ferent types in order that the military symbols which appear on operations orders, maps, and overlays will be understood by all personnel.

2. ORGANIZATION OF MANUAL

This manual is divided into two chapters.a. Chapter 1 gives general information on the use of

military symbols, lists the basic symbols used in the formation of symbols for military units, and gives de tailed illustrations of military symbols. The illustra tions are presented in two series of figures, one repre senting activities and installations and the other repre senting units. The figures for activities and installa tions are arranged by type in alphabetical order, and those for units are arranged by branch in alphabetical order.

6. Chapter 2 contains a list of terms and abbrevia tions that are authorized for field use in the construction and interpretation of military symbols.

3. RELATED PUBLICATIONS

Appendix I contains a list of publications which give detailed information on maps and mapping, foreign conventional signs and symbols, reference data for the various services, transportation and signal facilities, and abbreviations for administrative and electrically transmitted messages.

4. DEFINITION OF MILITARY SYMBOL

The term "military symbol" as used in this manual means the sign, composed of a diagram, number, letter, abbreviation, color, or combination thereof, which is used to identify and distinguish a particular military unit, activity, or installation.

5. VARIATIONS OF SYMBOLS

The symbols listed in this manual illustrate many of the type military units, activities, and installations likely to be encountered. However, symbols for specific units, activities and installations not included herein can be formed readily by applying the instructions contained in the manual. Whenever improvised sym bols are used, an index or key explaining their use should be placed on the chart, map, or overlay with which they are used.

Section II. BASIC SYMBOLS FOR UNITS

6. GENERAL

Certain basic symbols are always used to indicate the branch (or composition) and the size of a military unit. The symbols used for the branch (or composition) are shown in figure 1; those for the size of the unit axe shown in figure 2.

7. USE OF BASIC SYMBOLS

a. The basic symbols illustrated in figure 1 are used with a rectangle to indicate a unit and its branch. These basic symbols are also used within a triangle to indicate an observation post or within, a circle to in dicate a supply installation of one branch.

6. The size of a military unit or installation is indicated by placing above the rectangle, triangle, or circle the appropriate basic symbol listed in figure 2.

c. Boundaries, zones, or areas of units are shown by placing the appropriate symbol of figure 2 in bound ary lines.

d. Abbreviations are used in conjunction with the basic symbol to identify further a military unit. A complete list of authorized field abbreviations for this purpose is given in chapter 2.

e. The usefulness of military symbols lies in their ability to portray in a condensed form a graphic and' accurate picture of a unit or installation. Symbols arei extensively used in maps, sketches, and overlays.

8. COLORWhen colors are used, military symbols representing friendly forces and activities are shown in blue, and those representing enemy forces and activities are shown in red. When colors are not available, friendly activities are single and enemy double black lines. Symbols for mine fields, demolitions, road blocks, and other engineer obstacles, both friendly and enemy, are shown in green (see figure 10). The only excep tions are the following:

a. Symbols for areas to be covered by friendly fire, although generally located in enemy territory, are shown in blue

b. Symbols for contaminated areas, wherever lo cated, always shown in yellow (see figure 10).

Section III. Symbols for Activities and Installations

9. USE OF SYMBOLSa. This section contains symbols used to show

armed forces activities and installations on maps, map substitutes, charts, photos, and overlays. These sym bols are authorized for use for all military agencies. They are used mainly on large scale maps and over lays because their large size will not allow their full use on medium or small-scale maps. No departures from these symbols should be made unless none of them applies or the scale of the map prevents their use.

b. Special signs and symbols of a technical nature, such as signal wiring diagrams, communications net

works, construction prints, or engineer construction and building symbols, may be found in Field and

Technical Manuals of the arm or service concerned.

e. Where it is necessary to indicate the t'ype of equipment in use at a particular activity or installa

tion, the appropriate notation is made alongside the symbol. Appendix II contains a description of the

method of designating Army-Navy equipment.

b. Width of road. The width of the road is indicated in feet. On bituminous surfaced highways or higher type pavements it is measured between edges of pave ment (surface width); on roads of lower type con struction it is measured across the travelled way (surface width). The width of the shoulders is not included in the surface width.

Maps as a rule indicate the number of lanes rather than the road width. On maps of the U. S. and its possessions, the number of lanes shown are as desig- ' nated by federal, state or county highway bureaus and

commissions regardless of the measured widths of the roadways. On maps of foreign countries, a lane is in terpreted to be 8 feet or more in width. Thus, any for eign road less than 16 feet wide is symbolized as one lane; a road 16 feet wide and less than 24 feet as 2 Janes ; and 24 feet wide and less than 32 feet as 3 lanes.

e. Bridge symbols. Bridge.infoimatjiin is shown.by a single symbol such asr

case the weight class is 40 and the length of the critical span is 20 feet.

d. For additional symbols used in engineer recon naissance reports and overlays, see FM 30-5>Combat .Intelligence, and FM 5-10, Routes of Communication. For example engineer reconnaissance reports bear a bridge symbol similar to the above but containing some additional information.

e. Example of use of road and bridge symbols. Fig ure 15 illustrates road and bridge information which may be shown by the use of symbols on a map or over lay for general use. FM's 5-10 and 30-5 contain instructions for showing more detailed information .useful primarily to Engineer units.

MILITARY ABBREVIATIONS

Section I. INTRODUCTION

16. GENERAL

This chapter contains abbreviations authorized for use in operation plans and orders, including records, reports, overlays, and charts.

a. Abbreviations and their use in administrative correspondence, in personnel records, and in electrically transmitted messages by Army units and agencies are prescribed in SR 320-50-1.

b. Abbreviations authorized for administrative use by Air Force units and agencies are contained in AFR 11-11.

17. USE

a. General. Abbreviations should be used only when the meaning is unmistakable and when the abbreviation will serve a useful purpose. The unexpected appear ance in a message or order of an infrequently used or unfamiliar abbreviation will result in confusion and lost time. Abbreviations are of definite value where a lack of space makes their use necessary or desirable or wherever a considerable saving in time and material will be gained thereby.

b. Punctuation. With few exceptions, an abbrevia tion is written without spacing and without periods.

c. Capitalization.(1) With few exceptions, abbreviations are written

with the initial letter of each word capitalized

d. Variations. Except in few cases in this manual, nouns are listed only in the singular number and verbs in the present tense. Similarly, a single abbreviation is listed for all parts of speech of what is essentially the same word (for example, operate, operator, and opera tional are all abbreviated "opr"). 18. ABBREVIATIONS IN DATES AND HOURS

a. Dates. Dates are written with the day preceding

the name of the month, tiros: 15 January. The month is either spelled out, or abbreviated by using the first three letters of the word. In stating a night, both dates are included, thus: Night 7-8 Sep.

6. Hours. Time is indicated according to the 24- hour clock system in four digits, the first two digits representing the hour and the last two digits the minutes. The date and hour are expressed in a group of six digits, the first two indicating the day of the month and the last four the tune in hours and minutes.

Example: 251600 AprWhen the day, hour, or minute can be expressed by a single digit, they are preceded by a zero so that the complete date and hour number always contains six digits.

Example: 020630 MayThe month and the year if necessary, follow the six digit group.

Example: 101330 Jun 49c. Time Zone Designator. A letter suffix is used

after the time group to indicate the zone of the time being expressed. The letter suffix Z immediately fol lowing the last digit of the group indicates Greenwich civil time.

Example: 210830Z indicates 8:30 AM on the 21stday of the current month.
