Scott Olsen is in a "critical condition" in Highland hospital in Oakland, a hospitalspokesman confirmed.

Olsen, 24, suffered the head injury during protests in Oakland on Tuesday evening.More than 15 people were arrested after a crowd gathered to demonstrate against thepolice operation to clear two Occupy Oakland camps in the early hours of Tuesdaymorning.

Jay Finneburgh, a photographer who was covering the protest, published pictures ofOlsen lying on the ground.

"This poor guy was right behind me when he was hit in the head with a police projectile. He went down hard and did not get up," Finneburgh wrote.

Olsen was taken to Highland by fellow protesters.

Keith Shannon, who served with Olsen in Iraq, arrived at the hospital after protesterscontacted him through Facebook.

He confirmed Olsen had a fractured skull, and said he had been told by a doctor Olsen

    also had brain swelling.

A neurosurgeon was due to assess Olsen to determine if he needed surgery, Shannonsaid.

He said Olsen had served two tours of Iraq, in 2006 and 2007. Olsen was in 3rdBattalion, 4th Marines with Shannon before leaving the military in 2010.

He moved to the San Francisco area in July and works for Opswat, a software company, living with Shannon in Daly City, just south of San Francisco.

Shannon said Olsen was hit in the head by a tear gas canister or smoke canistershot by a police officer.

He said Olsen had a curved scar on his forehead consistent with a canister.

Protesters who had accompanied Olsen to Highland hospital got in touch with Shannonthrough Facebook, after Olsen said he lived with someone called "Keith".

Shannon said he was told Olsen was unable to say his surname.

Olsen is originally from Wisconsin and some of his family were planning to fly out toCalifornia to be with him, Shannon said.

Video footage published to YouTube shows Olsen lying prone in front of a line of police.

Around 10 people gather around him in an apparent attempt to provide aid, before apolice officer throws an explosive device into their midst, scattering the group.

Oakland police confirmed at a press conference that they used tear gas and batonrounds, but said they did not use flash bang grenades.

Scott Olsen returned unscathed from two tours in Iraq only to be critically wounded

during a violent confrontation between police and Occupy Oakland protesters.

Aaron Hinde, an Iraq war veteran who, like Olsen, is a member of Iraq Veterans Againstthe War, said Olsen was brought to the hospital by two good Samaritans around 8 p.m.Tuesday evening and lost consciousness on the way to the hospital.

Olsen's mother, Sandy Olsen of Onalaska, Wis., said her son joined the militaryout of high school in 2005 because he wanted to help the people over there, butsoured on the war during his tours of duty.

When he came home, she said, her son joined Iraq Veterans Against the War, a groupwhich has joined many of the Occupy Wall Street protests around the country.

His roommate, Shannon [Keith Shannon, who served alongside Olsen in the Marines inIraq], said Olsen joined the protests because he thought the banks pretty much run freeand unregulated and are never held accountable for their actions.

It is about the people taking back the government as well as placing restrictionson the corporations, he said.

Shannon said Olsen, who lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Daly City, had taken partin numerous Occupy Wall Street protests in San Francisco, joined the Occupymovement in Oakland for the first time Tuesday evening.

Oct. 12, 2011 By ADAM ASHTON; Staff writer, Bellingham Herald

Members of a Lakewood church are mourning an Army sergeant from Tacoma who diedin Afghanistan this week the second soldier with local ties reported killed in that

    country since Saturday.

Sgt. Nathan Wyrick, 34, leaves behind a wife and four sons.

The Defense Department has not sent an official release announcing his death, and aPentagon spokeswoman declined to provide more information Tuesday evening.

Word of Wyricks death circulated Tuesday among Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldierswho knew Wyrick from a past assignment and among his fellow worshipers atLakewoods New Hope Community Church.

Wyrick graduated from Franklin Pierce High School with the class of 1996 and played for

the schools varsity football team, a school spokesman said.

Wyrick left a lasting mark on his friends at New Hope church. They remembered him asa generous man who had served in Iraq and looked out for other Army families copingwith deployments to the Middle East.

He was a dad first and foremost, and a soldier second, said Andrea Wright, 28, ofUniversity Place.

Wright learned of Wyricks death Monday from the soldiers wife, Rachel Wyrick. Theybecame close friends several years ago when Wrights husband was assigned to Lewis-McChord.

Another friend said Nathan Wyrick loved his children so much he tattooed their nameson his body. He had an affection for other children, too, playing with Wrights four sons

when her husband served on a deployment overseas.

He was uncle Nay-Nay, she said.

The Wyricks moved about a year and a half ago to Fort Drum, N.Y., when NathanWyrick was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division. Theyve visited the South Soundseveral times since then, friends said.

Dan Livingston, a friend from New Hope Church, admired how Wyrick supported hisfamily while serving in the Army. Livingston said Wyrick joined the service after firstpursuing a career as a civilian electrician.

He was a real passionate dad who joined the Army to support his family, Livingstonsaid.

Another friend remembered Wyrick as a gung ho soldier who never had a bad word tosay about others. He was proud of the job he did, said Iona Parker, 60, of Steilacoom. He did it very well. He wasnt a shirker and he didnt badmouth anyone.

The Wyricks stayed with the Parkers just before they moved to New York. Iona Parkersaid Nathan would spend time in the garage with her husband, talking about military lifeand sharing what it means to leave your family and the risks involved.

He desperately loved his family, Parker said.

Wyrick is the second soldier with local connections to lose his life in Afghanistanin recent days. Spc. Ricardo Cerros Jr., an Army Ranger from Lewis-McChord,was killed in combat Saturday.

At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. Oh hadI the ability, and could reach the nations ear, I would, pour out a fiery stream ofbiting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke.

One day while I was in a bunker in Vietnam, a sniper round went over my head. The person who fired that weapon was not a terrorist, a rebel, an extremist, or aso-called insurgent. The Vietnamese individual who tried to kill me was a citizenof Vietnam, who did not want me in his country. This truth escapes millions.

A Letter From Goldman Sachs:Concerning Occupy Wall Street

October 18, 2011 The Borowitz Report

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) The following is a letter released today by Lloyd

Blankfein, the chairman of banking giant Goldman Sachs:

    Dear Investor:

Up until now, Goldman Sachs has been silent on the subject of the protest movementknown as Occupy Wall Street.

That does not mean, however, that it has not been very much on our minds. Asthousands have gathered in Lower Manhattan, passionately expressing their deepdiscontent with the status quo, we have taken note of these protests. And we haveasked ourselves this question:

How can we make money off them?

The answer is the newly launched Goldman Sachs Global Rage Fund, whoseinvestment objective is to monetize the Occupy Wall Street protests as they spreadaround the world.

At Goldman, we recognize that the capitalist system as we know it is circling the drain but theres plenty of money to be made on the way down.

The Rage Fund will seek out opportunities to invest in products that are poised tobenefit from the spreading protests, from police batons and barricades to stunguns and forehead bandages.

Furthermore, as clashes between police and protesters turn ever more violent, weare making significant bets on companies that manufacture replacements forbroken windows and overturned cars, as well as the raw materials necessary forthe construction and incineration of effigies.

It would be tempting, at a time like this, to say Let them eat cake.

  • 8/3/2019 Military Resistance 9J17: the Enemy

    18/21

But at Goldman, we are actively seeking to corner the market in cake futures. Weproject that through our aggressive market manipulation, the price of a piece of cake willquadruple by the end of 2011.

Please contact your Goldman representative for a full prospectus.

As the world descends into a Darwinian free-for-all, the Goldman Sachs Rage Fund is agreat way to tell the protesters, Occupy this. We havent felt so good about somethingweve sold since our souls.

    Sincerely,

    Lloyd BlankfeinChairman, Goldman Sachs
