Barreras was part of a special forces team which rescued Jessica Lynch in 2003, as TheChristian Science Monitor reported.

On March 23, 2003, a 19-year-old Army private first class Jessica Lynch, was workingas a supply clerk for the 507th Maintenance Company when the convoy she was in wasambushed in Nasiriyah, Iraq. Lynch, who was seriously injured in the crash and

hospitalized, was rescued by a nighttime special operation raid by U.S. Army SpecialForces, Air Force Pararescue Jumpers , Army Rangers, and Navy SEALS on April 1,along with the remains of eight soldiers.

Intense media interest in her story, initially characterized as the first rescue of anAmerican woman POW, fueled controversy and dispute. While she received militaryhonors including the Bronze Star, Prisoner of War and Purple Heart medals, she latertestified before Congress that the Pentagon had chose to lie and make me a legend.

The 49-year-old Berreras enlisted and served with the Marines for five years, beforejoining the Army, and became a member of the 75th Rangers Regiment. When he waswounded, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team,

1st Armored Division in Fort Bliss, Texas. The 1st Armored Division, also known as OldIronsides, dates back to before World War II.

He could have been sitting behind a desk. Some say thats maybe where he belongedat that age. But no, Barreras was not that kind of guy. He wanted to be right there withhis guys, Tuscon News Now quoted the commander of American Legion Post 132,addressing veterans there for their regular meeting.

In a statement, Rep. Ron Barber, D-Tucson, called Barreras a brave member of theUnited States Army.

Command Sgt. Maj. Barrerass death is a reminder that although the United States is

winding down our combat role in Afghanistan, we still have men and women who areplacing themselves in harms way every day, Barber said. I thank each one of them, aswell as their families, for their service and for their sacrifice.

Barreras is survived by his parents, Ray and Gloria, two brothers, David and Andy, wifeMelinda, three children, Calvin, Amice and Victorria, and three grandchildren, Collin,Noah and Claire.

Taliban fighters captured 27 police officers during an assault on a north-eastern provincein Afghanistan, authorities said Thursday.

Gen. Fazeluddin Ayar, the police chief in Badakhshan province, said that the 27 officerswere hiding in a cave during the Taliban attack Wednesday in Yamgan district.

The Taliban took the officers hostage and police have launched an effort to try and findthem, Ayar said. Some 50 other officers in the district hiding in the area escaped, Ayarsaid.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a message to journalists. Themilitants routinely execute security forces they capture.

Insurgents ambushed several police checkpoints in Badakhshan province, killing at least

six police officers in Yamgan district, Ayar said Wednesday.

The fighting started late Tuesday and lasted into Wednesday.

Reinforcements were sent to the site, but the police were forced to pull back from thearea and were fighting the Taliban forces from surrounding mountains as armyhelicopters flew overhead, Ayar said.

Five insurgents also were killed, and three policemen were wounded, he added.

The Taliban said its fighters had raised the movements white flag above the districtheadquarters.

Badakhshan province, nestled in the Hindu Kush and Pamir mountain ranges andbordering China, is one of the most remote in the country.

The area has seen few attacks from insurgents following the 2001 U.S.-led invasion ofAfghanistan. A recent landslide in the province killed hundreds in a rural village.

According to local authorities in southern Zabul province of Afghanistan, the Talibanmilitants killed at least six policemen who were captured a week ago.

The officials further added that the policemen belonged to Afghan Local Police (ALP)forces were captured while they were on their way Naw Bahar district.

Deputy provincial governor Mohammad Jan Rasoolyar said the dead bodies of thepolicemen were recovered on Tuesday from the same district where they were captured.

Governors spokesperson, Shafiq Nang, said militants planted explosives on a bicyclewent off when a number of soldiers were waiting in a queue in front of a local bank toreceive their salaries. Nine people including three Afghan National Army (ANA) soldierswere injured in the blast, he said.

All injured persons were shifted to the nearby hospital by security forces, he said.

Meanwhile, a witness speaking on condition of anonymity said that around 12 peoplewere injured in the blast, some of them are in critical condition.

JALALABAD: At least three policemen had been wounded during a spate of anti-militants conflicts in eastern province of Nangarhar, an official said Thursday.

Police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal told Wakht News Agency that the clashhad been erupted last night in Khiwi districts Kodyali area, where an insurgents localpolice checkpoint attack triggered a clash between the two sides.

The exact number of the rebels casualties was not clear, but three local policemen hadbeen killed and some arms including two Machinegun rifles had been seized by police,

The Ukrainian situation also mirrors the reactionary and nationalist wave that issweeping the entire European continent. They gleefullysee these elections as a chance to launch outrageous assaults of chauvinism andnationalism.

The different populations of Europe have plenty of reasons not to feel themselvesrepresented by the European Union in its current form.

Since the earliest formation of Europe, the Greeks and Hungarians have been preyed onby the French and German banks and multinational corporations. They have seen E.U.bureaucrats compel them to abandon even the weak social protections they had inplace. They have seen an international economic crisis condemn them to massiveunemployment. Their respective national governments, their own banks and bosses,havent treated them any better.

The working class is in a good posit ion to see that it can expect no benefit fromEuropean Union insti tutions.

In more than 60 years, the only law passed to promote equality between the sexes hasgranted women the right to work overnight, while the right to have an abortion is still not

guaranteed in all E.U. countries. And a Europe-wide minimum wage set at the level ofthe highest current national minimum has never even been on the table.

But yet again, the national governments have not done any better! Whenever theybring up the rights of workers or the unemployed, they always aim to bringeveryone to the same level as low as possible.

The nationalists make scapegoats out of the European Union, foreigners, andimmigrants.

Considering your completely inadequate response to the natural disaster, the least youcan do is to begin to behave responsibly and comply with these citizens demands.Dont get hung up on formalities and procedures; it is clear what you need to do.

Ordinary citizens have mobilized to help the vulnerable communities across the countryfaster and better than you haveyou, who are paid to do this.

You will not emerge from this unfortunate situation as winners!

DEMAND 1IMMEDIATE adoption of a change to the 2014 budget through which the financialresources allotted to funding poli tical parties is redirected to provide assistanceto the people and communities affected by the flooding.

DEMAND 2:IMMEDIATE drafting of a plan to clean up the damage and help the vulnerable citizensand communities.

In this regard, we demand that for the coming year, all pol itical appointees andoffice holders, at all levels of the government mentioned above, give back aportion of their compensation and other expenses to be used for the benefit ofaffected cit izens and communi ties.

While ordinary Bosnians have shown solidarity with flood victims, the countrys entitygovernments are coming under fire for failing to help people on time.

As hundreds of tons of relief collected in Bosnia and elsewhere reaches victims of the

severe floods in Bosnia, the authorities have been criticized for failing to react on time.

In Bosnias Federation entity, many people said they had still not obtained either food orother aid. A report from the town of Maglaj, for example, showed a man seeking apackage of donated food but being turned away.

Other reports said robberies had increased in the emergency and that traders had takenadvantage of the situation. Some traders have reportedly upped prices massively or re-sold donated goods.

The governments of both of Bosnias entities, the Federation and Republika Srpska,

both ordered prices to be frozen at the level of May 14, which is the date when the crisisstarted. They have also said thieves and profiteers will be dealt with harshly.

However, the fact that most of the food and other donations reaching victims hascome from ordinary people, not from government reserves, which only openedfive days into the catastrophe, has led to criticism.

The Federation entitys civil protection chief, Jerko Ivankovic Lijanovic, said there was noneed to use up government reserves as so much food was coming from peoplesdonations.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is drowning. Torrential rains have unleashed roaring funnels ofwater and mudslides that have consumed entire villages and taken more than 30 lives,according to official Bosnian counts. Almost a million are reported displaced; many moreremain at risk. The economic toll will reach into billions of dollars in a small country witha tragic history.

As one Bosnian remarked, We were already struggling, now we are sinking.

In the wake of the flooding, Bosnians have used social media to lash out at governmentineptitude for example, a decision by public television stations to broadcast Turkish

soap operas instead of emergency information. Furious flood victims say bureaucratsand officials at all levels of government have ignored their cries for help.

Neighboring Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Montenegro have been far quicker tooffer flood relief to both Bosnia and Serbia, and do so without considering recipientsethnic backgrounds.

The incident in Sheikh Jarrah was captured on film after a reporter happened to witnessthe event while driving through the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

I saw Israeli police officers attacking members of the al-Ramadi family in the SheikhJarrah neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem. Police officers were attacking women with

their fists and clubs and the internationally-banned pepper spray. Two women wereevacuated to hospital, the reporter said.

The woman in the video, Umm Firas al-Ramadi, told Maan that she was attacked aftertrying to help her son, who was being harassed by police officers.

I hurried to help my son, and they kicked me in the leg. I started to push them away,then they sprayed gas in my face, and I fell to the ground and couldnt stand up.

GAZA CITY (Maan) -- Israeli forces on Sunday shot and injured a Palestinian laborernear the border in the northern Gaza Strip, an official said.

Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman for the Gaza Ministry of Health, told Maan that a 21-year-old gravel worker was shot in the foot by Israeli forces near Erez crossing.

He was taken to Kamal Adwan Hospital in moderate condition, al-Qidra said. The youngmans name was not immediately provided.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said there was a large group of people who came nearthe security fence several times on Sunday.

They came and left and came and left all day, she said.

Asked what the Palestinians were doing in the area, the spokeswoman said: I cant giveyou that information.

According to a March report by Israeli human rights organization BTselem, the numberof live-fire casualties near the fence has been on the rise since late December.

Israeli soldiers have raided the office of Youth Against Settlements four timessince the organization in the occupied West Bank ci ty of Hebron posted a video toYouTube two weeks ago showing Israeli soldier David Adamov cock ing hisassault rifle at unarmed Palestinian youths.

The video went viral and has since provoked a violent backlash from Israeli soldiers who

have mounted social media campaigns expressing their solidarity with Adamovsactions.

They are going after everyone who was part of this video, said 34-year-old Issa Amro,the founder and director of Youth Against Settlements, speaking to me over the phoneyesterday from Hebron.

During one of the raids, an Israeli soldier threatened to shoot Amro and declared thatIsraeli soldiers are in Hebron to protect Jews, not Palestinians. The exchange wascaught on video and posted online by Amira Hass of Israels Haaretz newspaper.

Saddam Abu Sneinah, a 20-year-old activist with Youth Against the Settlements

who appears in the now famous video being kicked by Adamov, has beensubjected to the most brutal harassment of all.

To excuse Adamovs behavior, the Israeli army falsely c laimed that Abu Sneinahwas armed with brass knuckles.

Youth Against Settlements immediately responded wi th a second video showingAbu Sneinah armed with nothing more than prayer beads.

Days later, Abu Sneinah was arrested, beaten and tortured.

And the attacks didnt stop there. He has been detained several t imes since his

release and just last night Abu Sneinahs home was raided, his mother and sis tersbeaten and his brother arrested in what Amro described as revenge for thevideo.

What follows is a transcript of the phone interview I conducted with Amro, whichhas been light ly edited for clarity.

Based on his account, it is clear that the Palestinians of Hebron are at the mercy ofracist and violent Israeli soldiers accountable to no one.

Rania Khalek: Several news outlets report that Israeli soldiers raided the Youth AgainstSettlements office in Hebron in retaliation for the video. How many times has thishappened?

Issa Amro: Israeli soldiers raided our office four times after the video was posted toYouTube. Once on Thursday, 1 May, twice on Friday, 2 May, and again on Saturday.

The first time they came to see who filmed the video and they threatened us that nexttime they will not be silent about provoking the soldiers by filming them.

They asked who filmed it. I told them I was the one who filmed it, which is not true. I saidthis to protect the other activists who are not well-experienced in defending themselvesfrom the soldiers.

The soldier did not believe me. He said, No, it was someone else.

So I took the commander aside and I told him, Listen, now we have a bettercamera, which is an HD camera filming you from above, because we have aCCTV system.

And he was afraid, so they started to leave.

When they were going out the commander told me, exactly, We will not be silentabout you provoking the soldiers. We will shoot you directly.

I told him, Wait, wait. I want to film you saying that. But he refused to repeat it in frontof the camera.

The day after, on Friday morning, two soldiers and two settlers came to ourcenter. One of the settlers claimed that someone threw stones from the center. Itold her, Okay. What time? Tell me because I want to check the CCTV system tosee who did it.

Then she started saying, No, I dont remember. I dont see.

I told her, You said that it was five minutes ago and now you dont remember?Please leave, you and the sold iers.

The soldiers start shouting and yelling at me not to talk to them in this way. Then the

soldier told me directly that they are there to protect the Jews not the Palestinians. I wastelling him, No, you are here to protect me as well as the Jews. I am your responsibility.

Then one of them told me that he doesnt protect a son of a bitch. I told him, If Iam a son of a bitch, then you are what?

He told me, I am waiting for you to say it so I can shoot you.

Then, that night, Israeli soldiers invaded our center and the surrounding neighborhoodfor training.

Yesh Din (Hebrew for there is law), an Israeli legal advocacy organization, found that

soldiers by law arent allowed to train in inhabited areas.

But unfortunately soldiers came to have a training to scare us and to give us a hard time.Imagine that you are in the middle of something and you see soldiers pointing their gunsat you.

They raided the office from three directions and pointed the guns at us, then they leftoutside in our yard and into the neighborhood, which is three or four meters from our

center, shouting fire, fire, fire! Because we have experience with this, we knew that itwas a training. But it was still so scary.

On Saturday morning the same soldiers came to the entrance of our center and one ofthem gave the signal (slashing-throat gesture) for slaughtering someone.

RK: What is the purpose of these raids?

IA: Its not about destroying. Its not about invasion. Its about scaring the people whofilmed and published the video. Its about showing unity with the soldiers of the NahalBrigade (of which Adamov is a member) and to show that they are heroes in front of theIsraeli public.

The Israeli public gives them false motivation to be the best soldier who misbehaves andhas a very bad reputation. The solidarity campaign to support the soldier encouragesother soldiers do whatever they like and be aggressive as they want.

One Of Them Threatened That He Wil l Shoot Me If I Have A Camera

RK: Have Israeli soldiers targeted you outside of the Youth Against Settlements office?

IA: From time to time, they detain us at the checkpoints. Last Friday I was attacked bythe soldiers when I was filming protests in Hebron, a solidarity protest for the hungerstrikers. One of them threatened that he will shoot me if I have a camera.

I have a lot of false arrests. My lawyer now is suing the Israeli government formisbehaving and arresting me many times without any reason.

RK: The Israeli army claimed that Saddam Abu Sneinah was armed with brass knuckles.

But Youth Against the Settlements released a video showing that he was holding prayerbeads. Are Israeli soldiers threatening Saddam as well?

IA: Saddam was detained. Then he was released and went home. Then he came backand unfortunately he came during the soldiers action after the soldier cocked his gun toattack the other kid in the white T-shirt who is 15-years-old.

So the soldier targeted Saddam and slapped and kicked him. It was very obviousto the sold ier that Saddam didnt have anything dangerous in his hand.

Saddam was released that day; he was not rearrested. Then they arrested him threedays after the video was posted. The video was filmed on Sunday, 27 April and Saddam

was arrested on Wednesday.

In his arrest he was beaten badly. They kept beating him unti l he fainted. Then hewas kept handcuffed and blindfo lded on the concrete floor for all the night.

But it is not just Saddam. They are going after everyone who as part of this video.

[The call ended abruptly here. When I reconnected with Issa thirty minutes later, he hadnews to share about Sadam.]

A: Something happened just now. The Israeli soldiers invaded Saddams house. They

attacked his sisters and his mother and arrested his thirty-year-old brother. WhenSaddam called me, he was crying and I could hear a lot of screaming and shoutinginside the house. It is revenge for the video.

RK: Youth Against Settlements have been filming soldiers in Hebron for a while now.Have they always been this aggressive toward you?

IA: The soldiers are less aggressive in the area of the cameras. Saddams house isoutside our target area where we film all the time.

RK: Without the cameras, what do you think would happen?

IA: In the past many Palestinians were shot and killed by the soldiers and thesoldiers would put a fruit kni fe near them and claim that they tried to attack them.

A camera is the most trusted witness and the best protection tool in Hebron.

RK: Israeli soldiers staunchly defended the soldier in the video you posted when theywrongly believed he had been punished for cocking his gun at unarmed Palestinians.What do you think that means about the state of mind of these soldiers?

IA: First of all, they dont punish soldiers who are violent to Palestinians. On many otheroccasions, soldiers attacked Palestinians and humiliated them, but they were notpunished. What happened tonight to Saddams family is one of the best examples. Hisfamily was attacked and beaten up and the soldiers will not be punished at all. This isthe normal situation.

The video embarrassed the army. What embarrassed them more is that many peopleshowed their support, which means that soldiers are getting more and more supportfrom the Israeli public these days to become more wild.

When we published the video we thought that the Israelis wi ll be ashamed and

embarrassed about their soldiers. We saw something dif ferent. The soldier gotsolidarity and support from the Israeli publ ic and soldiers, which means that theywant more and more violence towards the Palestinians.

This shows that the external plans for peace negotiations is going in the wrong directionby putting high pressure on the Palestinians and not putting high pressure on the Israeligovernment to end the occupation.

RK: Do you think Israeli society is becoming more extreme?

IA: Yes. It is so extreme, so fanatic. A lot of comments on the video are against us,calling to kill and smash our heads in the future. It is a really, really sick environment.

In Hebron, the Israeli soldiers and settlers are working hard to displace the Palestiniansfrom the old city of Hebron. There is continuous harassment and frequent attacks by the

soldiers and by the settlers towards the Palestinians to make their life under occupationimpossible, to force them to leave on their own.

Its getting worse and worse.

RK: You continue to film in spite of the death threats from Israeli soldiers. Why?

IA: I believe in my right to defend my people. I consider myself a human rights defender.I believe in human rights and the Palestinian cause and I think that we can make achange. If we all as Palestinians get scared, we will lose our future and we will bedisplaced from what is left of our land.

RK: Are there any avenues for accountability?

IA: We file complaints against the Israeli army with the help of Yesh Din.

But there is no accountability for Israeli soldier misconduct and violations ofinternational law. We file complaints jus t to show we are trying within the Israelisystem to punish the law violators.

But it doesnt work. Its jus t a recording for history, nothing more.
