Military Adaptive Sports ProgramOverview

∎ Enhances recovery through individualized, daily reconditioning activities outside of traditional therapy settings that:

Inspire recovery, holistic fitness, and encourages new opportunities for growth and development

Is supported by specific legislative language for program initiatives

Prepares recovering Service members for the Invictus Games, Warrior Games and other competitions

Objectives

∎ Explain the benefits the Military Adaptive Sports program has for recovering Service members

Why the Military Adaptive Sports ProgramWorks

∎ Physical benefits of physical activity include reduced stress, increased quality of life, lower blood pressure, weight management and enhancement of rehabilitative process

∎ Adaptive sports and activities provide a social support system, of individuals facing similar situations

∎ Adaptive athletic activities allow Service members to focus on the team and contribute to the team’s success

∎ The sports and activities can allow the Service member to include family members

∎ CDC researchers find that difficulty adjusting to life largely stems from environmental barriers

Reduces the ability to participate in life activities

Undermines physical & emotional health

(CDC, 2000)

∎ Disabled Sports USA 2009 study found that people with disabilities who indicate they are physically active:

Are more likely to be employed

Believe physical activity has helped them advance in their jobs

Lead healthier lifestyles

Report a greater life satisfaction

Are more sociable and positive about life

Benefits: Recent Physical Activity and Disability Findings

∎ According to a study from the CDC in 2017:

Nearly half of adults with disabilities are inactive

Those who are inactive are 50% more likely to have a chronic disease than those who get the recommended amount of physical activity

Approximately 44% of adults with disabilities saw a health care professional in the past 12 months, received a recommendation for physical activity

Those with recommendations were more likely to be active than those who were not

Military Adaptive Sports Site Coordinator

∎ Provides and facilitates non-medical support to recovering Service members through a variety of safe and appropriate adaptive activities Facilitate structured camps, clinics, and daily

activities around the world

Has specialized training and experience

Is a dedicated resource, advising the local command team on adaptive sports and activities

More than 420,162 recorded occurrences of Service member participation since 2015

Warrior Care MASP Program Highlights

∎ The Warrior Care provides guidance and oversight to each Service and USSOCOM in the development, implementation and expansion of adaptive sports and reconditioning programmatic efforts

∎ Warrior Care works with the Service/ USSOCOM adaptive sports and reconditioning program leads to develop best practices and cross- Service collaborative efforts

∎ Adaptive Sports Site Coordinators placed at medical treatment facilities, WTUs, USSOCOM-HQ, Air Force Warrior Care Support, USMC Warrior Athletic Reconditioning Program (WAR-P) and Navy Safe Harbor-HQ to facilitate daily engagement in adaptive physical activity and recreational opportunities

Warrior Games

∎ Is the pinnacle MASP sporting event, showcasing what wounded, ill and injured Service members do on a daily basis

∎ USOC hosted the event from 2010-2014

∎ Nine sports: Archery, Cycling, Shooting, Wheelchair Basketball, Sitting Volleyball, Track and Field, Rowing, Weight Lifting and Swimming

∎ US SOCOM will host WGs in Tampa
