Showgirl and Rural Ambassador The Wandoan Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador winners were announced on the 11th April at a Cocktails and Canapés Night at the Wandoan Showgrounds.

This year’s Showgirl coordinator, Helen Devlin, did an excellent job in securing five young ladies for the Miss Showgirl Competition. The judges had a delightful afternoon interviewing and getting to know the girls, and they were proud to announce Sarah Stiller from Guluguba as the winner.

Runner-up was Amy Lawson, who is a teacher at the Wandoan School. Samara Hoffman, Kathryn Mulcahy, and Christine Stoeckert were the other entrants.

George Golden was named the 2014 Rural Ambassador. He said he is looking forward to representing his community and promoting youth at Agricultural Shows.

Both George and Sarah are now preparing for the South West sub chamber finals to be held in Dirranbandi.

Show - 14th & 15th AprilDespite the hard season producers have so far faced this year, many still turned up to

support the 60th Annual Wandoan Show on April 14 and 15.

Patrons to the Show were delighted to see cattle parading around the ring, horses jumping in the main arena and pavilions brimming with photos, cooking and artwork.

There was a variety of entertainment on offer, including a freestyle motorcycle and bicycle show, a puppet show, circus workshops and side show alley to name only a few.

The Show was officially opened by the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies President, Keith Bettridge. Also spotted around the grounds was this year’s Wandoan

Miss Showgirl winner Sarah Stiller, and Rural Ambassador George Golden.

Organisers of the Show were more than happy with the turn out, and it was great to see a noticeable increase of families in attendance while the school holidays were running.

Showgirl The inaugural Taroom Ladies’ Luncheon on 5th April saw Danielle Brown announced as the 2014 Miss Taroom Showgirl. The Showgirl Committee decided to host the new event to incorporate the QCL Showgirl Competition. 54 ladies supported the new concept.

Guests enjoyed a lunch of cold meats and divine salads, followed by exquisite dessert towers ladled with cakes and slices. They also enjoyed a number of guest speakers, who touched on a variety of issues, including mental health in rural areas.

Judging the competition was Wallumbilla based artist, Anne Cameron, Dr Rohani Oorloff and Benita Hay, ABH Transport, Wandoan. They awarded the show princess title to Natalia Schumacher, while Georgie Brown was a close runner-up.

We have a new member of the Western Downs Magazines family: Willow Lacee Wood was born on the 14th of April, a beautiful little girl for Michael and Amelia (who is on maternity leave for another 11 months, not that we are counting) and congratulations to Cole on his promotion to ‘big brother’.

Mother’s Day is on the horizon now too as we head into May, 2014! I hope all the Mum’s out there are spoilt rotten; it truly is the most challenging, yet rewarding job a woman can ever take on. It’s funny though how until you have your own children, you can never really appreciate what we put our own mothers through! I know for a fact I would still be lost without mine; she’s really one of a kind.

Western Downs Magazines are once again proudly sponsoring the wonderful, biennial Jandowae Timbertown Festival in June this year. You can read the full program on page 16 - 19 of this edition. You can keep up-to-date with the latest news as the Festival approaches on their website: www.jandowaetimbertown.org.au

There are many other events on the Western Downs over the next few months, with campdraft action at Glenmorgan and the Miles Show in May, and Moonie celebrating a half century in June. You can read all the details within this edition!

Enjoy the cooler weather and your May edition of the Miles Lily, I will be back for the July Edition!

Miles Historical Village Radio Play NightOn the evening of Saturday, the 15th March, the ‘Miles Historical Village’ hosted a radio play, BBQ, film and trivia night. The event was well supported by locals, workers and visitors alike. As usual, there was a great deal of voluntary, ‘behind the scenes’ organization which made the evening possible.

It was an open air event and fortunately, (and unusual for Miles, I know!), the weather was….. you guessed it…… warm and dry!

The evening commenced with a BBQ and once that was over, the play was performed. Called ‘Shelter from the Storm’, it was well acted by Shirley Makin, Pat Staines and Tegan Mehta. Tegan’s part especially allowed plenty of scope for expression and she carried it out with skill and humour. Judging by the silence and the rapt expressions, the audience seemed to enjoy the play and yes, folks! the one and only microphone wielding Pat Staines (of Christmas Carnival fame!) made it on stage this time to read his lines (but not to sing…..maybe next time, Pat!).

Two short films were shown, three new museum exhibits were on display and the evening ended with a Trivia Night.

The Historical Village has new displays and an impressive, professionally designed book has recently been released. The book was created by Steve Chaddock from ‘Timeline Heritage’, Maleny.

Jean Brown’s Tapestry Display at MilesA quiet little house in Miles sprung to life on Friday, 11th April, when Jean Brown held an Open House Exhibition to display her many tapestries. Jean first started working on tapestry while working with the senior citizens in Winton, Queensland and soon passed the interest onto her daughters, Jenelle and Lynette. She has completed many works since that time.

The morning was reserved for invited guests and the display was open to the public later in the day. Guests enjoyed a delicious morning tea and listened to Jean talk at some length on tapestry. Many of Jean’s, Jenelle’s and Lynette’s professionally framed works were displayed throughout the house.

Over the years, she has made tapestries for her immediate family, brothers and sisters, children, grandchildren and friends (and as a raffle prize for ‘Milton House’). At present, she is working on some for her great grandchildren - Anthony and James Brown.

She also plans to start one for a surprise, 60th birthday present. We cannot, of course, say who the lucky recipient will be - after all, that is a secret!

Wandoan RacesA perfect autumn day saw a strong crowd of race goers gather at the Wandoan racetrack for country racing at its best on the 22nd March.

Committee member, Jason Erbacher, said the Annual Wandoan Diggers’ Race Club Inc’s race day is always a ‘must’ on the social calendar for Wandoan and surrounding residents.

“It allows everyone the chance to dress up and to catch up with family and friends in a relaxed atmosphere,” Mr Erbacher said.

“We couldn’t do it without our sponsors: Mike Jones Earthmoving, CMS Hire, Modular Building Services, Landmark Wandoan, Santos, LMT, Mullins Mitre 10 Chinchilla and Miles, and the Western Downs Regional Council.”

“There are many other people who deserve to be thanked as well. On behalf of the Race Club, we appreciate the effort everyone puts in to make this event possible!”

“Overall, it was an excellent day of country racing, and we hope to see everyone for a bigger and better year in 2015,” Mr Erbacher said.

Wandoan RodeoThirty-two years on, the Wandoan QRA Rodeo is still going strong thanks to the generous sponsors and volunteers around the community.

The Annual Charity Rodeo held on the 5th April featured a full program, with timed events in the day and rough stock at night. Proceeds raised were to support the local Palliative Care and Cancer group.

With over $22,000 in prize money up for grabs, the ‘best of the best’ were drawn to town from as far north as Tully to Tamworth in the south.

Australian champion bull rider, Frazer Babbington, put on an impressive show to take out the Open Bull Ride sponsored by Murphy Pipe and Civil, and the Bull Ride Chute Out, sponsored by D&W Transport.

Wallumbilla’s Cam Taylor took out the EMC Training sponsored Open Saddle Bronc. Local rider and leading Australian pro champion, David Worsfold, did his best to win the Open Bareback, sponsored by Black Trucks and Ag.

Timmy Hoskins won the Steer Wrestling Competition, which was sponsored by Rodney Perrett, in memory of his father, Owen who introduced the event to Australia.

Sam Stanford created much excitement being the only Junior Bareback rider to make time, allowing him to take home a sizeable cheque donated by Aprilla Grids.

The Ostwald Bros Ladies’ Barrel Event was taken out by Amanda Hair, who also received a trophy from the western store, Ridin’ and Ropin’. Robin Perrett supplied beautiful buckles for the all round cowgirl and cowboy which were won by Vicki Tattam, Miles, and Cam Taylor, on a draw.

The Novelty Event, sponsored by local agents Landmark, Elders and GDL, was designed by Wandoan’s Brodie Budd and Matt Doherty. The event tested the endurance of the three member teams, and in the end, it was the Tennyson’s from Wandoan who proved superior.

Rodeo organiser, Georgie Worsfold, said the event wouldn’t have been possible without the teams of volunteers, yard man, canteen and bar helpers, ticket sellers, gate keepers, and the set up and clean-up crews.

“Thank you to everyone who helped out in some way! Without you, we would not be able to have a rodeo,” Mrs Worsfold said.

Noonga NotesTennis FixturesNot only was the latest rain welcomed by farmers and graziers, it also means that the Annual Noonga Tennis fixture season can begin. Beginning on Sunday, 27th April, and then every 2nd Sunday until August 4th, the courts of Noonga will be abuzz with activity as players enjoy a full day of tennis, and a social get together.

There is a lunchtime BBQ, drinks and chocolates on sale. The area is fully fenced with a sandpit for the little ones to enjoy while Mum or Dad are on court. At the time of publication, teams will have been organised, but floaters are always welcome. Please contact Mary Leahy on 46276358 for more information.

Children’s Singles Tennis TournamentOn Tuesday, 8th April, 40 primary and secondary school children nominated for the first “Holiday Singles Tennis Tournament” held at the Miles tennis courts. The day was hosted by the Noonga Junior Tennis families, in association with the

Noonga Tennis Club. Unfortunately, due to the drought conditions, the Noonga ant bed tennis courts weren’t able to be ready for the first holiday tournament. The Miles Tennis Club made allowances for Noonga to host the event in Miles, which the Noonga Junior tennis was very grateful for. Competition was strong amongst the secondary “A” Grade boys, with Lachlan Smith from Condamine only just beating Owen Gray - Miles, by a count back. The Secondary “A” grade girls nominations were a little down with only one nomination, and Miles’ own Mikayla Colley took up the challenge to compete against the “A” boys and fought hard with ‘girl power’ all day and even defeated many at the net. The Primary “A” division boys and girls were very well supported with a total of 12 nominations. Again, the competition was strong and Harry Beeton - Condamine, only just defeated Jed Bignell - Miles by another count back. Primary “A” girls provided some great entertainment throughout the day, with visiting player, Brooke Fitzgerald -

Highfields, winning by a clear margin. The Primary “B” division boys was won by Cory Leahy - Noonga. The “C” division was well supported in the boys but also saw the lonely one girl band “C” grade girl, Harriet Young - Drillham, compete against the boys all day. The winner of the “C” grade boys was a tie between Robbie Titmarsh - Condamine and visiting player, Bryce Barfield, sharing the glory.

The day was a huge success and many people were thanked for their volunteer help in the canteen, on courts umpiring and organising the draw for the day. Polly Leahy, Event Organiser, said that she was very pleased with the outcome and the number of nominations, and that she had had a lot of really good feedback from both parents and players. Polly hopes that this will be the first of many singles events to come, but next school holidays (June/July) tennis will return to Noonga for a “Holiday Doubles Tournament”.

Moonie is 50 and We Want You to Help us Celebrate!Do you have a connection with Moonie, either with the oilfields or with the district? Fifty years ago, in 1964, the Moonie Oilfields was built to pump the newly discovered oil reserves. Many people built the facilities here and many more worked, and sometimes lived, at the Moonie Oilfields. The recently balloted farming blocks were being cleared and the pioneering farming and grazing families of the Moonie District looked forward to a wonderful new district that they hoped would grow and prosper. Moonie State School recently celebrated its 50th year as well.

In 1964, a group of locals decided to build a tennis court, then cricket grounds and the Moonie Sports Club began. It is still the ‘hub of the district’ and has hosted all manner of sports including: cricket, tennis, netball, an AFL club, a gun club, fitness and ballet groups, as well as a well stocked and run bar, many different

groups who meet there, our famous yabbie races, playgroups, school concerts, Arts Council performances, weddings, christenings, 21sts and funerals. Over the years, the volunteer run Sports Club has expanded and updated its facilities and we now boast arguably ‘the best hall and facilities for many kilometres’ (Yes, we are boasting, but it’s true! We even have mobile phone signal now!!).

Please come and help us celebrate our half century on Saturday, 7th June. It’s a very rare opportunity to tour the Santos Moonie Oilfields as it is usually a restricted area for safety and business reasons. Tours begin there at 11am then travel the short distance to the Moonie Sports Club, where the afternoon’s fun will lead on into an evening of food, fireworks and a great live band. Please RSVP for catering so we can feed you all! It will be a great day to remember.

2010/11 Floods Given Lasting Legacy with Launch of Official Flood MarkersThe sunshine welcomed guests on Saturday 29 March during the official launch of the Chinchilla Flood Markers, which recognise the impacts of the 2010/11 floods and depict the stories of previous floods that have occurred in the area since 1942.

The Flood Marker project was funded through the State Government Community Recovery and Wellbeing Package and the Regional Arts Development Fund.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development and Health Services Councillor Carolyn Tillman said the markers, which are placed on the footpath from the Post Office to the Club Hotel, will provide a lasting legacy for current and future generations to reflect upon the devastating impacts past floods have had on the community.

“The simple poles capture flood levels, historic images and information and will be an ongoing reminder for the community to understand the legacy, impact, experience and contribution of the community during and after the disasters,” she said.

"It was a pleasure to be involved in officially launching the Chinchilla Flood Markers and I thank all those who came along on the day."

The Condamine community will be next to benefit from the Flood Marker project with a marker set to be placed in the revamped Pioneer Park alongside the historic flood boat that sits in the park.

Project Coordinator Kylie Bourne said that it was a wonderful project to work on.

“With the community's strong connections to the floods it was rewarding to be able to produce lasting pieces to reflect the history of the floods that I am sure the communities of Chinchilla and Condamine will be very pleased with.”

The Condamine Flood Marker launch will be held on Saturday 26 April in conjunction with the official opening of the revamped Pioneer Park. The launch and opening will be held prior to the Condamine Cods home game.

Livestock BiosecurityBiosecurity is becoming a significant issue for primary producers in the Western Downs and our nation at large. Karen Huskisson of Wattle Downs Merino and Poll Merino Stud at The Gums is a Director on the Agforce Sheep and Wool Board. In this role Karen has been trained as a Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer in not only sheep and wool but all biosecurity issues that have the potential to affect primary producers. Karen has developed a broad knowledge of issues through her roles as the President of the Queensland Merino Stud Sheepbreeders Association, a member of the National Wild Dog Action Plan Committee, a delegate on the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders, a committee executive of Leading Sheep, a coordination of the Moonie Weed and Pest Group, a member of Southern Inland Queensland Regional Committee of Agforce and also the Transport Committee. These roles have given Karen a comprehensive knowledge in the issues that arise under the banner of Biosecurity and assist her in understanding all industries of primary producers.

Karen recommends that all properties should have a Biosecurity Property Plan to assist them with their personal management of any risks or hazards that have the potential to harm their livestock or business. Biosecurity hazards do not only appear as animal diseases; they can come in all shapes and forms including:

• Weeds: Vehicle access to properties can pose a threat of transferring weeds, this hazard has become more common especially with the current active oil and gas exploration where a high risk of Biosecurity issues arise with vehicles entering and exiting properties. Some properties and paddocks have been rendered unusable due to the spread of African lovegrass and other inedible grasses and weeds.

• Feral Animals: These animals can transfer catastrophic diseases to our livestock, for example: wild dogs spread diseases such as parvo, distemper and neosporum caninum which specifically causes early abortion in cattle; feral pigs can spread leptospirosis as well as acting as a carrier for various worms and other minor diseases.

• Fodder: Importing and exporting contaminated feed from properties and factories also poses a risk of transporting poisonous and inedible plants like Patterson’s curse, parthenium weed, mother of millions and stremoneum

• Straying Stock: Stock that are inadequately contained on their property of origin pose one of the greatest risks and can spread disease at a phenomenal rate while having a detrimental impact on viability of livestock production. Not only does straying stock spread lice and other contaminants; sheep pose a huge risk of contracting and spreading brucellosis which is a sexually transmitted disease causing infertility. This disease is in extreme stages in some areas of Queensland amongst the sheep industry due to the lack of containment of stock. In addition to this graziers are getting unwanted offspring affecting their breeding program and genetic gains. To prevent this you should buy your rams from a Brucellosis Accredited enterprise. Medulated fibre in merino flocks also causes a large discount to the producers’ wool as the fibre is from an exotic animal breed which must be declared on selling wool. Any exotic breed owner can be held responsible for lack of stock containment and loss of income to the merino owner.

• Transporting Stock: The importation of stock from interstate can aid in the contraction ovinejohnes/bovinejohnes disease. It is a national regulation that all stock transported interstate must travel with a National Health Statement and sheep should travel with a Sheep Health Statement supplied by the owner or seller to the buyer. It is recommended that all purchases of livestock should check the stock entry requirements for their specific state and their role as a purchaser.

With these extras hazards posing risk to your livestock it is essential to incorporate a Biosecurity Property Plan in your management procedures to ensure the farm’s optimum viability status. Your local Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer can assist you with accessing information on contamination, disease and creating a Biosecurity Property Plan.

Karen says there are specific chains of action that must be taken should you find health status issues within your livestock. Firstly, you would need to contact your regular vet. If the vet is unable to explain the illness or if the issue is that of a biosecurity nature your vet must contact the Principal Veterinary Officer who will then inform the Chief Veterinary Officer of Queensland. From here you can be put in contact with your local Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer who can assist with facilitation of communication and explanation between the authorities and you as the farmer on a confidential basis.

Should you need more information you can access the Livestock Biosecurity Network online at www.lbn.org.au or contact Biosecurity Queensland in the Department of Forestry and Fisheries in Toowoomba.

A Million Paws Opens Doors for Dogs in NeedThe RSPCA Queensland’s largest fundraising event of the year Million Paws Walk is back and bigger than ever with over 17,000 people estimated to walk at 26 different locations state wide, on Sunday 18th May 2014.

This year RSPCA Qld is hoping to raise $250,000 for dogs in need. Nearly 45,000 animals pass through RSPCA Qld Animal Care Centres every year and over 18,000 are dogs that have been surrendered, abandoned or seized by Inspectors. These dogs are not as fortunate as your much loved family pet. They often need to be desexed and vaccinated before they have the chance to find a new home. The money raised through The Million Paws Walk enables these dogs to receive daily care, veterinary treatment and funds rehoming programs. The cost to our community for these animals in need is in the millions.

This year the RSPCA Queensland is encouraging Million Paws Walk participants to try and raise $150 each. “Our annual operating costs are $39 million in Queensland and we receive less than one percent of that figure in Government funding. So every cent raised helps,” said RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty.

How to get involved; 1. Register online 2. Pay registration fee 3. Create your online fundraising page 4. Ask your friends and family to sponsor you

Join the Million Paws Walk and support a community of dog lovers, helping all abused dogs get the second chance they deserve, while enjoying a fun day out with your best friend. It is cheaper and easier to register online before the day and don’t forget, even if you can’t walk you can still fundraise!

The RSPCA would also like to acknowledge the major sponsor of this year’s event, Hill’s Pet Nutrition (the maker of Hill’s Science Diet and Hill’s Prescription Diet). As the official nutritional partner of the RSPCA, Hill’s Pet Nutrition has provided Hill’s Science Diet to all shelter animals awaiting adoption since 1997.

When: Sunday 18 May, 2014, Where: St Joseph’s Primary School, Canaga Street, Chinchilla. More information: RSPCA Qld Events Team | 07 3426 9943 | [email protected] | www.millionpawswalk.com.au

Business

Being in small business can be tough. We know you want to be working ‘on’ the business not ‘in’ it, and planning for the future.

We’re not just accountants.

We’re your business adviser and your sounding board.

Whether you’re just starting out in business, in a growth phase or getting ready to retire…

we’re with you every step of the way.

Keep Calm and Talk To Your AccountantAs the weather turns cooler and the leaves change colour, the excitement is building at the BMO Business Centre in Dalby. It’s tax time again!

Not everyone enjoys tax time as much as the accountants at BMO, so Partner, Adrian Rasmussen, has put together these top three tips to help you survive the final quarter of 2013-14 and to avoid any nasty surprises after 30 June.

See your accountant. It might sound obvious, but it still surprises us that some business owners don’t see their accountant before the end of June. You should be seeing your accountant in May to review your predicted tax position. When 1st July hits, it is too late. Over the years, we have saved clients thousands and thousands of dollars with legitimate strategies to minimise tax liability.

Get Super advice. With the pension age set to rise to 67 in 2023 (and talk of it going up to 70), no guarantee that we’ll have pension payments in the future, and life expectancy continuing to rise, we need to be investing for our futures.

Superannuation has had a bad rap over the years, but remember, it’s not Superannuation itself that is bad, it’s the failed investments that have been made inside Superannuation that have caused the trouble. Superannuation is a really effective structure and you can use it for high or low risk investments. That said, tax time is the perfect time to talk to your financial planner and accountant about your super as it can be an essential part of your tax planning.

Get organised. If you haven’t kept all your records up to date during the year, now is the time to get your bookkeeping program (like QuickBooks) ship-shape. If you find entering data too time consuming and mistyped figures drive you crazy, talk to your accountant about streamlining with BankLink. This system securely takes the information straight from your bank statement, so there’s no need to enter all the data. You can also set up the program to memorise transactions so regular payments are coded automatically for you.

While tax time can be stressful, communicating

with your accountant regularly is an important way to keep calm and enjoy the closing of another financial year.

Adrian Rasmussen is a partner at BMO Accountants. BMO is a multifaceted business advisory firm delivering solutions for accounting and taxation, business growth, wealth creation, loans and leasing. Information in this article is general in nature and readers are advised to seek advice specific to their circumstances.

Spotlight on Castor OilLast month, I discussed the dangers of synthetic preservatives in our food and personal care products and the links they have with illnesses and diseases. I also talked about the benefits of using certified organic products and how small changes can really prolong your life and benefit your health. If you missed this column, then you can find a copy of it on the Western Downs Magazine website in the April edition of the ‘Miles Lily’.

This month, we put the spotlight on castor oil, one of the best kept secrets in the world of natural cosmetics and beauty products. A key ingredient in a number of personal care products, castor oil is a deep skin healer and contains strong therapeutic qualities. Sometimes used to assist in pregnancy, castor oil has a bit of a sour reputation as a result of its taste and mouth feel, which is said to be like drinking a thick oil, or even vaseline.

Thankfully there are other options if you don’t want to swallow it, but you will have to put it on your skin. Castor oil is one of the key ingredients in some lip glosses because of its fantastic healing and rejuvenating properties.

Here are five very good reasons why it pays to apply it to your skin:

1. Because it has a low molecular weight, castor oil is easily absorbed into the skin, helping to nourish and moisturise. It is particularly effective when it comes to the prevention and treatment of wrinkles.

2. Castor oil has been used for thousands of years as a face cream to help reduce dark under-eye circles.

3. It is rich in ricinoleic acid, a powerful antimicrobial agent which can help fight skin infections, as well as aid in the healing of minor cuts and scratches.

4. Ricinoleic acid also possesses pain relieving properties. This makes castor oil ideal for the treatment of arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions, as it can help lubricate joints, reduce pain and increase circulation.

5. Because it is easily absorbed, castor oil has the ability to reach the deeper organs of the body. For this reason, it has long been used by ayurvedic practitioners to help break down blockages leading to water retention and weight gain.

Ask OptomTomYour questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear

Question: Can I have my Cataracts treated with a Laser??

Answer: The use of Femtosecond laser or “bladeless” cataract surgery was first performed in Hungary in 2008 and more recently in Australia in 2011. There are currently very few ophthalmology practices who utilize this technology in Queensland.

The laser does not replace the need for surgical procedure to remove the opacified lens in the eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens. However, it does provide for more predictable surgical incisions and reduces the amount of time for the hands-on component of the procedure.

While there are plenty of additional implied benefits of this new technology, more research is required to confirm these benefits compared to conventional cataract surgery. At this stage,

the evidence suggests that the use of laser in cataract surgery appears at least as safe as conventional procedures.

If I had a cataract, I would certainly be investigating this option.

Family Ties Forge Strong Connection to Miles HospitalFor Robin Derksen, the Miles Hospital is more than just a place of work. It is place that is inextricably linked to her family, and is filled with good memories. Ever since the late 1960s, members of Robin’s family have worked for the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service’s rural facility.

Starting with Robin’s mother, Doreen Binge, four generations have passed through the hospital’s wards. “I’ve had children, my nieces and grandchildren all have a stint at this hospital,” Robin said.

Robin started work with the hospital in 1983. “It was June 23; I still remember that date,” she said. “Initially I was in the office in a relieving role. Then I worked on the wards and in the kitchen preparing food. “I started in my current role in the laundry about 10 or 15 years ago.”

Currently Robin has three family members working at the hospital: her daughter Marie Steinberg who is a registered nurse, and two

granddaughters Alyssa Mirabito and Emily Steinberg who are both assistants in nursing.

Alyssa has been at the hospital for three years. She hopes to finish her nursing degree through the University of Southern Queensland in the next 12 to 18 months.

“Ever since I cared for nan’s sister, who had cancer, I knew I wanted to be a nurse,” 20-year-old Alyssa said. “I was 12-years-old and I would help shower her and rub cream into her feet. “That experience has made me want to be a palliative care nurse one day.”

Robin is proud that her family has strong links to the hospital, and ever prouder of her Indigenous heritage. “The Miles Hospital has a good track record of employing Indigenous people,” Robin said. In fact, the hospital is a leader in the field of Indigenous employment, with over 10 per cent of its employees Indigenous.

“The hospital is seen as a leader in Indigenous employment across the Western Downs,” Director

of nursing Anita Bolton said. “We have created a safe place for Indigenous people to work and we are proud that.”

My Midwives Rural Outreach Darling DownsMy Midwives is a Midwifery Group Practice based in Toowoomba. We opened in December of 2010 as the first practice of its kind in Australia. We provide antenatal care and postnatal care in the community and labour and birth care at Toowoomba Hospital where we have admitting rights. All our midwives are able to order pathology and diagnostics and many are able to prescribe. We provide two main services – continuity of midwifery care where a woman sees the same midwife throughout the continuum from early pregnancy to six weeks after birth with the midwife on call for labour and birth care and a

bulk billed services where a team of midwives provides the care.

The My Midwives Rural Outreach – Darling Downs project has been funded by Medicare Local. The program will provide antenatal and postnatal care in three areas – Millmerran, Inglewood and Chinchilla in conjunction with medical care of the woman’s choice if required or desired.

For more information or an appointment please contact [email protected] or phone 07 46 422 977.

“Lindsay Williams Shield”Even though it was a warm day, the spectators watched great senior league football played by the three visiting teams and the local Taroom Battlers on 8th March. Our first game kicked off at 4pm with the Roma Cities up against the Tara Panthers. Roma Cities came out the winners with a final score of 12 to 4. Round 2 saw Taroom Battlers up against Wallumbilla Red Bulls. Unfortunately, the Battlers fought hard but went down 12 points to 10. Spectators were entertained with an under 20’s game between Roma Cities and a Gatton Uni side during interval with Roma Cities in their commemorative jerseys who either went to school or Uni with Chris and/or Brad Hall and were delighted to travel out to Wandoan to participate in the competition.

Spectators stayed to see the Roma Cities take on the Red Bulls in the final, with Cities coming out on top 10 to 4. Bob and Judy Williams were present to hand over the shield to the Cities’ Captain, Kev Ruhle, who stated that he and the whole team had a great time and enjoyed the competition.

After the grand final, the Wandoan Sport & Recreation held an auction of a set of thirteen commemorative jerseys with Brad Hall being the auctioneer. The total raised from these jerseys was an outstanding $10,940 with the highest bidder being Shannon Sattler.

Once again, Wandoan Sport & Recreation wish to thank all volunteers who worked setting up, cleaning up and working on the day and night during the event. A huge ‘thank you’ to Cr Andrew Smith, who each year since the official opening, has never said “no” to being the MC for the whole competition. Sincere thanks to our sponsors: MJE, JK Backhoe and FKG. To all the spectators who were a well behaved and supportive group of people, A BIG THANK YOU, and we hope to see you all next year!
