THE LAST BISON CONCERT POSTERThis project was made with the intent of pursuing various explorations of type and image. We were shown various methods of combining the two elements, such as fragmentation and inversion, in order to find a better way to compose a design. In this case, I made a concert poster for the indie-folk band, The Last Bison, using Inversion as the basis of my design. I used the lead singer’s hair and beard to create a silhouette and weaved the concert dates, name of the band and the title within the hair.
WHEN WORDS FALL“When Words Fall” is a collection of poetry by Gabbi Buencamino, a budding author in the Philippines. I was commissioned to do the book cover design and was tasked to do a creative take using typography. Using the technique of stippling, I illustrated a serif typeface in a manner that visualized it coming apart, symbolizing the somtimes destructive and corruptible nature of words.
DICTIONARY OF OBSCURE SORROWSThis project was to create a new take on books. I took The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, a blog that constructs emotional and etheral meaning out of invented words, and used that as mycontent. I took a few select words from the dictionary and made cards with the word on one side and the definition, written in calligraphy, on the other. I constructed a multi folio book to contain the said cards and bound them together in a modified coptic bind.
FILES AND FILETYPES (FOR IDIOTS LIKE YOU)Files and Filetypes (For Idiots Like You) is a project in which I had to create an Interactive PDF that detailed the definitions and uses of the basic filetypes used in our industry. I used my letter-ing skills to create an interesting dynamic and playful contrast between the files and their definitions. The tone and dialogue of the copy is meant to reflect a satirical tone.
CHAI WAN TRAVEL MAGAZINEChai Wan is one of the farthest and more rural districts of Hong Kong. The project was to make a publication that detailed the importance or history of the district to us. The direction of this magazine was towards a more personal account of the district and followed a more exploratory approach instead of being a formalized brochure.
UFC DATA VISUALIZATIONThe UFC is the biggest Mixed Martial Arts sports organization in the world. Its roster includes a bevy of talented fighters and a stable of long-reigning champions. This data visualization is a graphic interpretation of the careers current champions of the UFC. The graphic showcases wins, losses, championship fights and the manner of how the fight was finished.
SAN FRANCISCO T-SHIRTSan Francisco is one of the most exciting cities in the United States. Its vibrance, excitement and Californian flair make it one of the best cities to travel to. The lettering design for the shirts were influenced by these elements and were made to illustrate them in a unique and stylistic manner.
SELF PROMOTIONAL LOGOTYPEI designed my logo with the intent of showcasing my love for the craft of lettering design. Calligraphy and hand-lettering have been a significant influence in my design career, and my unbridled passion allows me to continuously improve my skills in the field. The logo was designed to reflect my outgoing and enthusiastic personality, accompanied with an underlying elegance showcased through the flow of the letterforms.
HANDMADE LETTERING PIECESLettering design is a beautiful, meticulous and difficult craft. It is is a fundamental part of design, and is a big proponent of the typographical pieces we see in the industry today. My desire to constantly learn and improve in this craft allows me to have a creative outlet as well as a method of putting ideas to paper in a more unique manner.
LETTERING ON PACKAGE DESIGNSOne of the mediums that best showcases the beauty of lettering art is package design. Package design incorporates lettering elements into it to complement the overall package and adds an element of interest to it. I took pre-existing products and reappropriated their logos or designs and replaced them with my own lettering pieces.
