Spanish EmigrantsPeriod: 20th century.6 million Spaniards left Spain.Before the 1930s 80% of them chose America.From the 1950s to the mid-1970s 74% of them chose the countries of Northern Europe.From 1961 to 1974 about 100,000 emigrated every year to Northern Europe.In the last third of the century, Spain became a receiving country for foreign workers, mainly from Northern Africa and South America. It also became the destination for wealthy European pensioners.In the last years of the century only about 2000 Spaniards emigrated every year.

Migration in CataloniaBefore the Spanish civil war (1936-1939), many Catalan people migrated to America, many of them chose Cuba.After the civil war, thousands of Catalan people fled to France trying to escape from political repression. In the years that followed the war, Catalonia received thousands of emigrants from the rest of Spain. Many of them also left their home rural areas fleeting from political repression. In the 1960s and 1970s hundreds of thousands chose Catalonia trying to find better working conditions and a better future.Nowadays, about half the population of Catalonia has its origins in the rest of Spain.
