Guide to the applianceMiele dishwashers are available inthree versions:

1. "Freestanding" dishwashers

"Freestanding“ dishwashers do not re-quire any special installation fixings inthe kitchen, (exept for plumbing).A decor frame can be added to take apanel for matching the dishwasher tothe kitchen fronts (the frame is fitted asstandard to some models).

2. Integrated ("i“) dishwashers

"i“ dishwashers are specially designedfor building under a continuous work-top.

The control panel with its accessoriesis included with the "i“ dishwasher in aseparate package for on-site fixing.The front is designed to be fitted with abase unit front to match the kitchen fur-niture.

The dishwasher does not have a plinthfacia. The plinth area can be coveredeither with facia to match your kitchenfurniture if available, or another facia.The separate plinth facia can be fittedto match the height of adjacent plinths.The plinth return is freely adjustable.

All notes on installation are describedin the chapter on "Installation instruc-tions“.

3. "U“ dishwashers

The built-under("U“) dishwashers usethe integrated ("i“) dishwashers as the basic machine.

By using a decor set (GDU) the "i“ dish-washer can be converted into a-"U“model dishwasher.

GDU installation instructions are in-cluded in a separate installation leafletsupplied with the decor set.

Warning and safety instructionsThis appliance conforms to currentsafety requirements. Inappropriateuse can however lead to personalinjury and damage to property.Read the operating instructionscarefully before starting to use thismachine. This way you will avoidthe risk of accidents, and damageto the machine. Keep these instruc-tions in a safe place for reference,and pass them on to any future user.

Appropriate usage

This dishwasher is intended exclu-sively for cleaning domestic croc-

kery and cutlery. Do not use for pur-poses other than those for which it wasdesigned. Unauthorised use couldprove dangerous. The manufacturer cannot be held re-sponsible for any damage caused byimproper use or for uses other thanthose for which the appliance is in-tended.

The following notes are to help avoidpersonal injury

To ensure stability integrated andbuilt-under models must be in-

stalled under a continuous worktopwhich has been firmly screwed toneighbouring units.

The electrical safety of this ap-pliance can only be guaranteed

when continuity is complete betweenthe appliance and an effective earthingsystem. It is imperative that this basicsafety requirement is tested and wherethere is any doubt the electrical systemin the house is checked out by a quali-fied electrician. The manufacturer can-

not be held responsible for damagecaused by the lack or inadequacy ofan effective earthing system, (electricshock for example).

For safety reasons do not operatethis appliance on an extension

cable. Danger of overheating.

A damaged appliance is dangerous.Switch off at the mains and call the

Service Department for assistance.

Repairs may only be carried out bysuitably qualified and competent

engineers to ensure safety. Repairs byunqualified persons could be dan-gerous.

With the "Waterproof system", theplastic housing of the water inlet

connection contains an electrical com-ponent. It must not be dipped in water.

Do not let small children play withthe dishwasher and its controls or

operate it. There is a danger that children playingmight shut themselves in the dish-washer. Please supervise its use by theelderly or infirm.

Do not use solvents in the dish-washer. Danger of explosion!

Avoid inhalation of powder deter-gents.

For appliances with the heating ele-ment in the wash cabinet do not

touch the element during or directlyafter the end of a programme, youcould burn yourself.

Warning and safety instructions

Dishwasher detergents contain irri-tant or corrosive ingredients. They

can cause burning in the mouth andthroat if swallowed, or inhibit breathing.Keep children away from detergentsand from the dishwasher when thedoor is open. There could be deter-gent residues in the appliance.

To avoid the danger of childrencoming into contact with the dish-

washer detergent: Only put it into thedetergent dispenser just before startingthe programme, and then secure thedoor with the child safety lock.For models with "Delay Start" optionmake sure the detergent dispenser isdry before putting in detergent. Wipedry if necessary. Detergent will clog ifpoured into a damp dispenser and maynot be thoroughly dispensed. If thedoor is open at the end of a pro-gramme, children may come into con-tact with this residue.

Water in the dishwasher must notbe used as drinking water.

Appliances with a cutlery basket:items of cutlery are cleaned and

dried more efficiently if placed in thebasket handles downwards. You mayhowever, prefer to place cutlery withsharp points with the handles upwards.

Always disconnect the appliancefrom the electrical supply for main-

tenance work (switch off at wall socketand remove plug, screw out fuse incountries where this is applicable).

The following notes should help toavoid material damage

The voltage and frequency shownon the data plate must match the

mains supply in the house.

Only use detergents formulated fordomestic dishwashers. Do not use

washing-up liquid.

Do not use commercial or indus-trial detergents as these may dam-

age material and there is a risk ofsevere chemical reaction.

Inadvertently filling the salt reser-voir with dishwasher detergent al-

ways leads to damage to the water sof-tener. Make sure that you have pickedup the right packet of dishwasher saltbefore filling the salt reservoir.

Inadvertently filling the rinse aidreservoir with powder or liquid

detergent always leads to serious dam-age to the reservoir. Only use rinse aidformulated for domestic dishwashers.

Do not sit or lean on the openeddoor. This could cause the dish-

washer to tip and be damaged.

If your dishwasher has the heatingelement visible in the base of the

wash cabinet, as far as possible al-ways place plastic items in the top bas-ket, and ensure they do not dropthrough. The plastic could melt or loseits shape near the heating element.

The Miele Waterproof System of-fers protection from water damage,

provided the following conditions aremet:

– the dishwasher is correctly installedand plumbed in

– the dishwasher is properly main-tained and parts are replaced whereit can be seen that this is necessary

– the stopcock has been turned offwhen the machine is not used for alonger period of time (e.g. duringholidays).

In countries where there are areaswhich may be subject to infesta-

tion by cockroaches or other vermin,pay particular attention to keeping theappliance and its surroundings in aclean condition at all times. Any dam-age which may be caused by cock-roaches or other vermin will not becovered by the appliance guarantee.

Disposal of your old machine

When disposing of an old dish-washer first make it unusable. Dis-

connect, cut off the cable and the plugfrom the cable. Make the door lock inoperative, so thatchildren cannot accidentally shut them-selves in. Make appropriate arrange-ments for the safe disposal of the ap-pliance.

The manufacturer can not be heldresponsible for any damage causedby non-observance of the Warningand Safety instructions.

Caring for the environmentDisposal of the packing material

The transport and protective packinghas been selected from materialswhich are environmentally friendly fordisposal and can normally be recycled.

Rather than just throwing these ma-terials away, please ensure they are of-fered for recycling.

Disposal of your old machine

Old machines contain materials whichcan be re-cycled. Please contact yourlocal authorities or scrap merchantabout potential recycling schemes, be-fore disposing of the appliance.

Ensure that the machine presents nodanger to children while being storedfor disposal. See the appropriate section in the Warning and Safety instructions.

Energy saving washing

These dishwashers are exceptionally ef-ficient in their use of water and elec-tricity. You can make the most of yourappliance by following these tips:

If your household water system is suit-able, this dishwasher can be con-nected to a hot water supply, for furthereconomies.However, if your water is heated byelectricity we would still recommendconnection to cold water.In the UNIVERSAL 55° programme, de-pending on the capacity of the dish-washer, when connected to hot waterat 55°C up to 0.7 kWh of electrical en-ergy is saved. The hot water providesthis energy, and the approx. 0.13 l oil or0.14 m3 natural gas needed to heat thewater might be considerably more costeffective.Although all stages of the wash thentake place with hot water, savings aremade in cost, time and energy.

Make full use of the baskets withoutoverloading the dishwasher for mosteconomical washing.

For small loads:Select “Top Solo”-programmes (seechapters “Switching on and off” and“Programme selection”).

Choose the programme to suit thetype of crockery being washed andthe degree of soiling.

If baskets are only half full use theECONOMY programme.

Use the correct dosages of deter-gent.

Before using for the first timeBefore using for the first time pleasenote the following points:

Setting the water softener

The water softener unit must be set todeal with the water hardness level inyour area.The salt reservoir must also first befilled with water and then with dish-washer salt. Never fill with dishwasherpowder detergent.

Filling the salt reservoir with deter-gent by mistake will cause seriousdamage to the water softener.Please check every time before re-filling that the package containsdishwasher salt.

Add rinse aid

Only use rinse aid formulated for do-mestic dishwashers.

Inadvertently filling the rinse aid reser-voir with powder or liquid detergent, orwashing up liquid, will cause seriousdamage to the reservoir.

Do not use washing up liquid

Only use detergent formulated for do-mestic dishwashers.

Load the crockery correctly

Load the crockery so that water willcome into contact with all surfaces.This ensures that they will be properlycleaned.

The spray arms must not be blockedby items which are too tall for the bas-ket or which hang through. If necessarymanually rotate the spray arms to test.

Add the correct amount of detergent

Follow the detergent manufacturer’srecommendations on how much deter-gent to use. Not using enough will leadto poor wash results. The amount to dis-pense will depend on the type of deter-gent and programme selected.

Read the notes on dosage given in theprogramme chart.

Cleaning results may vary from brandto brand. If you are not satisfied withthe results from one brand try anotherquality brand before contacting theCustomer Service department for ad-vice.

It is important to choose the correctprogramme

The UNIVERSAL programmes areideally suited to everyday loads. Seethe programme chart for descriptionsof other programmes.

The filter combination in the base ofthe wash cabinet and the spray armsmust be kept clean.

These should be regularly inspectedand cleaned if necessary.

Opening and closing the doorTo open the door

Press the release catch inside thedoor grip.

If the door is opened during operationall functions are automatically inter-rupted.

To close the doorPush the baskets right in

Lift the door upwards and push untilit clicks into position

Child safety lock

The child safety lock is designed todeter children from opening the dish-washer door.

Use the key provided to turn thechild safety lock to the required set-ting.

Horizontal setting = The door islocked.

Vertical setting = The door canbe opened.

Water softenerIt is not necessary to reactivate withsalt if the degree of hardness in thelocal supply is permanently under 70 mg/l, (0.7 mmol/l, or 4 °d Germanscale).

Your local water supplier will adviseyou on the water hardness of your area.

Above 70 mg/l (0.7 mmol/l, or 4 °d Ger-man scale) water must be softened.This is to avoid the build-up of calciumdeposits on crockery and cutlery, andin the dishwasher, and also to increasethe effectiveness of the detergent.

To ensure a steady supply of soft waterthe built-in water softener must be:

1. correctly set and

2. the salt reservoir must be filled with dishwasher salt for reactivation.

The dishwasher is set at the factory tooperate to a hardness level of 400 - 630 mg/l (4.0 - 6.3 mmol/l, or 22 -35 °d German scale).

If your water is harder or softer thanthis the factory setting will need tobe adjusted.

Use a coin or screwdriver to adjustthe water hardness level selector inthe wash cabinet. There is a click aseach setting is reached.

Example:

The water hardness level is 320 mg/l.

The water hardness level selector mustbe set to setting 2, 270 - 380 mg/l (15 - 21 °d German scale).

Filling the salt reservoirPlease only use special coarse graineddishwasher salt for reactivation, asother salts may contain insoluble addi-tives which can impair the functioningof the softener.

The salt reservoir holds approx. 2 kg ofsalt.

Inadvertently filling the salt reservoirwith dishwasher detergent alwayscauses serious damage to thewater softener.Make sure that you have picked upthe right packet of dishwasher saltbefore filling the salt reservoir.

Remove the bottom basket.

Unscrew the salt reservoir cap.

Before filling the salt reservoir forthe first time:Fill the salt reservoir with approx.2 litres of water.

Place the funnel (provided) in place.

Fill carefully with salt(As it is filled displaced water will runout).

Clean salt from the screw threads ofthe socket.

Screw the cap on firmly.

Run the “PRE-WASH” programme immediately to remove any traces ofsalt water from the cabinet. This isnot necessary if a “UNIVERSAL” or“UNIVERSAL PLUS” programme isrun straight away.

Salt indicator

When the salt reservoir is empty the“Salt” indicator light comes on. Thereservoir should be refilled with dish-washer salt for reactivation.

Note

With very soft water, i.e. constantly at alevel below 70 mg/l (4 °d), the reservoirdoes not have to be filled with salt andalthough the salt light does come on,this can be disregarded.

Adding rinse aidRinse aid is necessary to ensure thatwater does not cling and leave markson crockery during the drying phase.Rinse aid is poured into the storagereservoir and the amount set is dis-pensed automatically. The rinse aid reservoir holds approx.130 cm3.

Inadvertently filling the rinse aidreservoir with powder detergent (orliquid detergent) always causesserious damage to the reservoir.Only pour rinse aid formulated fordomestic dishwashers into the reser-voir.

Although it is possible to use house-hold vinegar with a max. 5% acidcontent, or liquid citric acid up to50% acid as an alternative, the re-sulting rinsing and drying qualitywill not be as good as when rinseaid is used.Do not use vinegar with a high acidcontent (e.g. vinegar essence 25%acid). This must not be used as itsuse would damage the dishwasher.

Add rinse aid when the indicatorlight “Rinse aid” on the control panelcomes on.

Press the button (in the direction ofthe arrow) until the flap springs open.

Add rinse aid only until it is visible onthe surface of the filter in the open-ing.

Close the flap firmly.The flap must audibly engage, other-wise water could get into the rinseaid storage container during the pro-gramme.

Mop up any split rinse aid. This pre-vents over-forming occuring duringthe next programme.

The flap should normally remainclosed. Only open it for adding morerinse aid!

Wait until the ”Rinse aid” indicator onthe control panel lights up before ad-ding more rinse aid.

Setting the dosage

The dosage adjuster (see arrow) in theopening has settings from 1 to 6. It isset to 3 at the factory, as the recom-mended dose.This setting dispensesapprox. 3 ml rinse aid per programme.

If there are flecks on glasses afterdrying use a higher setting.

If smearing appears on crockery usea lower setting.

Loading the dishwasherNote

Load the crockery so that water willcome into contact with all surfaces.This ensures that they will beproperly cleaned.

Do not place crockery and cutlery in-side other pieces where they may beconcealed.

Hollow items e.g. cups, glasses etc.must be inverted in the basket.

Deep bases items should be placedat an angle such that water runs offthem freely.

Tall narrow hollow pieces should beplaced in the centre of the basket,rather than in the corners, to ensuregood coverage of water.

Small pieces should be placed on thecup racks. Cups should be on thelower rack and bowls on the top rackso that water reaches all pieces.

The spray arms must not be blockedby items which are too tall for thebasket or which hang through .If necessary manually rotate thearms to test.

Some foodstuffs may contain naturaldyes, e.g. carrots, tomatoes or ket-chup. Plastic items in the dish-washer may discolour if large quan-tities of these foodstuffs find theirway into the appliance on the croc-kery.The stability of the plastic items isnot affected by this discolouration.

Loading examples

Bottom basket

Larger and heavier items such asplates, serving platters, saucepans,bowls. Depending on the dishwashermodel glasses may only be cleaned inthe bottom basket if it is fitted with aspecial glassware insert or if there is aspecial bottom basket.

Height limit

The height guard at the base of theupper basket is there to protect themiddle spray arm. No object placed inthe lower basket should stand higherthan this guard.

Upper basket

Small, lightweight, delicate items suchas cups, saucers, glasses, dessertbowls, etc.

Note for “Top Solo”

If a “Top Solo”-programme has been se-lected, all crockery must be loaded intothe upper basket and cutlery tray. Seethe “Swithing on and off” chapter for fur-ther information. Dishwashers with cut-lery baskets distribute cutlery in the par-titions to space it out.

As the middle spray arm also directswater downwards, lightly soiled platesor platters can be placed in the bottombasket if there are large spaces be-tween them. Do not place dishes,bowls or other hollow containers in thebottom basket. See also the Section on“Programme selection”.

Cutlery

Dishwashers with cutlery basket:

Unsorted cutlery should be placed inthe cutlery basket, handles facingdownwards.

You may, however, prefer to placecutlery with sharp points with thehandles upwards.

Place small spoons in the individualslots to either side of the cutlery basket.

Larger items like soup ladles, longknives and mixing spoons should beplaced lying down across the front ofthe upper basket.

Spoon inserts for cutlery basket

Use the inserts supplied when washingheavily soiled spoons, e.g. tablespoonsand serving spoons.

The inserts separate the spoons toallow a space between them, for thewater jets to reach the entire surface.

When needed place one insert at thefront and one at the back of the cut-lery basket.

Removing the inserts:Press the catches (which are alreadyclicked in) inwards (if necessary usea spoon handle) and pull the insertsupwards and out.

Place the spoons into the inserts withthe handles facing downwards. Onlyuse alternate slots.

Dishwasher with cutlery tray (SCmodels):

For best results cutlery should begrouped in zones, one for knives, onefor forks, one for spoons etc. Thismakes unloading much easier.

Larger items like sauce ladles, cakeslices, long knives and mixing spoonscan be placed lengthwise in the troughin the centre of the tray.

The upper spray arm must not beblocked by items which are too big,e.g. cake slices.

The cutlery tray insert is removable (de-pending on the model).

Ensure that spoon heads are in contactwith at least one of the grips in the cut-lery tray. This way they cannot collectwater.

Cutlery with round or oval handlesshould be placed with the heads in thegrips as this prevents them slipping.

If putting the spoons this way round,make sure the spoon heads touch atleast one of the strips on the floor of thetray, so that the water still runs off.

Flap up racks

Can either be used for a second row ofcups or raised upwards to make roomfor tall items.

Positioning rail(standard feature depending on model)

For easy sorting and removing of croc-kery the positioning rail can be rested toone side.

Raise it again afterwards so that croc-kery can rest against it in the basket.

Adjusting the upper basket(depending on model)

In order to gain more space for tallerpieces of crockery in the bottom orupper basket, the upper basket can beadjusted in three steps with 2 cm be-tween each step.

Pull out the upper basket and loosenthe two locknuts on either side of thebasket.

Adjust the basket up or down to therequired height.

Tighten the locknuts.

The upper basket can also be set to anangle if required.

Depending on the setting of the upperbasket the following dimensions can beaccommodated:

Items not suitable for dishwashers– cutlery with wooden or horn handles,

– wooden or plastic chopping boards,

– glued items, e.g. old knives withhandles which have been glued on,

– hand-made craft items,

– copper or tin items,

– plastic items which are not heat resis-tant.

Please note

– Silver- and aluminium items can suf-fer some discolouration.

– Aluminium components (e.g. greasefilter) must not be cleaned with caus-tic alkaline commercial or industrialdetergents. This may damage ma-terial or, in extreme cases, causesevere chemical reaction.

– Silver, treated with a silver polishmay still be damp or spotted at theend of a programme, where waterhas not run off smoothly. It may needrubbing dry with a soft cloth. Silver,treated in a silver immersion dip isusually dry at the end of a pro-gramme but may discolour.

– Colours painted over a glaze mayfade after many washes.

We recommend:

Wash delicate glassware in theECONOMY 55 ° - programme, (or formodels where the programme isavailable, GENTLE 45°C). This will re-duce the risk of clouding.

There are no standard guidelines forwashing glassware. When in doubtwash by hand.

When purchasing new crockery, cut-lery and glassware, make sure theyare dishwasher safe.

Items not suitable for dishwashers

Adding detergentOnly use detergents formulated fordomestic dishwashers. Do not usewashing up liquid.

Please noteDishwasher detergents contain irri-tant or corrosive ingredients. Theycan cause burning in the mouthand throat if swallowed, or inhibitbreathing. Keep children away fromdetergent and from the dishwasherwhen the door is open. There couldstill be detergent residues in thecabinet. To avoid the danger of children com-ing into contact with the dishwasherdetergent:only put it into the detergent dispen-ser just before starting the pro-gramme.

Selecting detergentRecently almost all detergent manufac-turers have launched new detergentswith a different composition, in additionto standard types.

Should you experience difficulties whenusing these types of products, pleasecontact Miele Customer and TechnicalServices Department, or the detergentmanufacturer’s own Advisory Service.

These new dishwashing detergents, al-though welcome from an ecologicalpoint of view, react to a different degreefrom conventional products to waterhardness. The drawbacks may onlybecome apparent after a prolongedperiod of use.

The following problems may occur:

– White deposits on crockery andinner cabinet.

– Increased etching in the form of abluish sheen on the surface of glass-ware.

– Discolouration of silverware.

Appearances of this nature aregenerally caused by the detergentused and are not attributable to anymalfunctioning of the dishwasher it-self.

Preventive measures:

1. If you wish to continue using the newchlorine and phosphate-free pro-ducts, the following is recommended:

– Set the water hardness selector onesetting higher than recommended inthe “Water softener” chapter, if thewater hardness is at the top of thescale (except with setting 6).Example:above 610 mg/l (34 °d ) set thewater hardness selector to setting 4.

– Try out an environmentally friendlydetergent of the same type from an-other manufacturer.

2. If you are still dissatisfied with the re-sults, we recommend the use ofchlorine-free but not phosphate-freedetergent.

– The instructions given in this bookfor setting the water softener and dis-pensing detergent remain valid.

3. If results are still not to your satisfac-tion, you should revert back to usingconventional detergents containingboth chlorine and phosphate.

– The instructions given in this bookfor setting the water softener and dis-pensing detergent remain valid.

Dishwasher detergent must be addedbefore each programme (except PRE-WASH).

– Pour powder or liquid detergent intothe dispenser.

– Dishwasher detergent tablets can beput at various places in the washcabinet, (follow the manufacturer’sadvice on the packet).

Detergent manufacturers give the re-quired amount of detergent in ml (or g)on the packaging.

For UNIVERSAL programmes use atleast 30 ml (or g) detergent unless ad-vised to use more by the manufacturer,then use what they advise.

The amount to dispense will depend onthe type of load and the programme se-lected.See the programme chart on the nextpages for advice on amounts to dis-pense.

If you buy detergent in bulk pleaseensure that the container is alwaysproperly sealed after use. Otherwisethe detergent can lose its effective-ness.

Programm selectionChoose your programme according tothe type of load and how dirty it is.

In most cases this will be a UNIVER-SAL - programme.

UNIVERSAL 55 ° or 65 °(with one pre-wash) or

UNIVERSAL PLUS 55 ° or 65 °(with two pre-washes).

These programmes are ideally suited toeveryday loads, mixed loads with va-rying degrees of soiling.

For particular needs there are specialprogrammes:

The different programmes and theiruses are described on the next twopages in the Programme chart.

Top Solo(for small loads)

When you choose a “Top Solo” pro-gramme, most of the water is dis-tributed by the top and middle sprayarms.

These programmes are recommendedwhen there is only a small amount ofcrockery and cutlery to clean whichcan be fitted into the upper basket andthe cutlery tray.Leave plenty of space between the cut-lery in the cutlery tray.

As the middle spray arm also directssome water downwards, larger platesand platters can be placed in the lowerbasket, also well spaced out.Do not, however, place dishes or bowlsor other hollow containers in the bottombasket.

Using “Top Solo” results in savings inwater, detergent and energy.For example in the UNIVERSAL 55° pro-gramme 20 litres of water are used,and 1.4 kWh electricity.In the TOP SOLO 55° programme only15 litres of water are used, and 1.1 kWhelectricity.

Because smaller amounts of crockeryare being washed the amount of deter-gent recommended by the manufac-turer can normally be reduced, depend-ing on how soiled the load is, (toapprox. two-thirds of the amount for afull load). Make sure, however, when re-ducing the amount dispensed that thecleaning result is not affected.

A programme is complete only whenthe programme selector switch is at the"End“ position.

You can now open the dishwasher andunload it. If the dishwasher is leftclosed, the drying fan runs on for a fewminutes to avoid condensation.

We recommend this if you do not needthe crockery immediately. This processdoes not count as part of the main pro-gramme time.

The PRE-WASH programme is com-plete only when the programme selec-tor switch stops just before the startpoint of the "UNIVERSAL PLUS" pro-gramme.

Programme change– It is possible to change temperature

within a programme e.g. UNIVERSAL55 ° to UNIVERSAL 65 °.

– If changing a programme e. g.UNIVERSAL PLUS to UNIVERSAL orfrom TOP SOLO to another pro-gramme:Turn the temperature selector switchto "0-OFF".

Turn the programme selector switchclockwise to the required Start point.

With the temperature selector switchselect the required temperature.

Programme interruptionA programme is interrupted as soon asthe door is opened. If the door is closed again the pro-gramme will continue from the positionit was at when it was interrupted.

WarningWater in the dishwasher may behot. Danger of scalding!Only open the door if absolutelynecessary and exercise cautionwhen doing so.Before closing the door leave it ajarfor approx. 20 secs. This will en-able the temperature in the washcabinet to settle. Close the doorfirmly making sure that it clicks intoplace.

Remove loadHot crockery will chip and breakmore easily.After switching off let it cool down inthe dishwasher until it is comfortableenough to handle, before unloading.

If you open the door fully after switch-ing off, the crockery will cool downmuch faster.

First unload the bottom basket, thenthe upper basket and then the cut-lery tray (if you have one) at the veryend.This way you avoid water dropletsfrom the upper basket or the cutlerytray (if you have one) falling on tocrockery in the bottom basket.

Cleaning and careCleaning the filters in the washcabinet

The dishwasher must not be usedwithout all the filters in place!

The filter combination in the base of thewash cabinet should be regularly in-spected and cleaned if necessary.

Turn the handle anti-clockwise to re-lease the filters.

Lift and take the filter combination outof the machine. Remove coarse par-ticles and rinse under running water.Use a nylon brush if necessary.

Turn the filter combination over andopen the coarse filter by pullingback on the locking device.

Clean the coarse filter under runningwater, using a brush if necessary,and press the locking device back in.

Important:After cleaning make sure that the lock-ing device is properly locked.

Replace the filter combination sothat it lies flat in the base of the washcabinet. Secure the filter by turningthe handle in a clockwise direction.

Cleaning and careCleaning the spray armsParticles of food can lodge in the sprayarm jets.The spray arms should be inspectedand cleaned regularly (approx. every 6months).

To do this remove the spray arms as fol-lows.

Lift up the middle spray arm b to en-gage the tooth-wheel mechanism.Then unscrew the spray arm c.

Remove the lower basket and takeout the lower spray arm.

Dishwashers with cutlery basket:

Unscrew the upper spray arm.

Dishwashers with cutlery tray:

Pull out the cutlery tray.

Lift up the upper spray arm to en-gage the tooth-wheel mechanismand then unscrew the spray arm.

Using a sharp pointed object pushthe food particles into the spray armjets and rinse well under runningwater.

Please note:After replacing the spray arms checkthat they move freely.

Cleaning and careCleaning the drain pump and non-return valveIf water has not been pumped away atthe end of a programme the drainpump or the non-return valve might beblocked. They are, however, easy toclean. Watch out for glass splinters,which could cause injury.

Take the filter combination out of thewash cabinet.

Use a jug or bowl to scoop water outof the wash cabinet.

Raise the locking clamp.

Lift up the non-return valve and rinseunder running water.

The drain pump is situated under thenon-return valve (see arrow).

Before replacing the non-return valvecheck that the drain pump impellerturns with only slight resistance, andthat there is no obstruction.

Carefully replace the non-returnvalve and secure with the lockingclamp.

Replace and secure the filter combi-nation.

Cleaning and careCleaning the filter in the waterinletA filter is incorporated in the screw con-nection of the valve on the water inlethose. The filter must be cleaned whendirty, otherwise insufficient water flowsinto the wash cabinet.

The plastic housing of the waterconnection contains an electricalcomponent. It must not be dippedin water.

Fitting an in-line water filter

If the mains water contains a large num-ber of insoluble substances, we recom-mend fitting a large area filter in theconnection between the stopcock andthe water inlet hose threaded union.These filters can be obtained from theMiele Spares Department (Part No.:75577).

To clean the filter

Disconnect the appliance from themains supply (switch off at the mainsocket and pull out the plug, switchoff the appropriate circuit at the fuse-box or withdraw the mains fuse).

Turn off the stopcock and unscrewthe inlet hose.

Carefully remove the rubber seal.

Withdraw the filter using pointedpliers and clean by rinsing under run-ning water.

Replace filter and seal. Make surethey are sitting correctly!

Screw back into place on the waterinlet, taking care that it goes back onstraight.

Turn on the stopcock gradually totest for leaks. If there is a leak:Screw the connections on moretightly.

Cleaning and careCleaning the wash cabinetIn general the wash cabinet is self-cleaning, provided that the correctamount of dishwasher detergent isused.

If however there are lime scale orgrease deposits these can be removedwith a proprietary dishwasher cleaner.

Cleaning the door and thedoor seal

Wipe the door seal regularly with adamp cloth and remove any par-ticles of food.

Wipe away any residue of food anddrink spillage from the sides of thedishwasher door. These are not partof the wash cabinet and are notreached by water from the sprayarms.

The facia panelThis should only be wiped with adamp cloth, or a suitable plasticcleaner.

Do not use an abrasive cleaner, aglass cleaner or an all-purposecleaner. Because of their chemicalcomposition they could causeserious damage to plastic surfaces.

The front of the dishwasherLaminate fronts should be cleanedusing a suitable proprietary cleaningagent.

Fronts made from wood should onlybe cleaned using a damp cloth orleather and dried with a soft cloth.

Do not use any cleaner containingammonia or thinners.

Checking the water levelChecking the water levelIf the water pressure (flow rate at thetake-off point) is too low, i.e. less than1,0 bar, too little water will flow into thewash cabinet.

To ensure an accurate assessmentopen the stopcock fully and run thePRE-WASH programme once (with-out crockery) to bring water into thesystem.

Run the PRE-WASH programmeagain. After approx. 3 minutes openthe door and remove the bottom bas-ket from the machine.

The water level is correct when dimen-sion “X” is at least 4 mm.

If it measures less, then the water in-take time must be increased.

Position the right hand switch verti-cally and then pull it off.

Using a 4-5 mm wide screwdriverturn the adjuster mechanism to theright hand side of the spindlecarefully in an anti-clockwise direc-tion until it checks into position.

= Clockwise turn (factorysetting – 1 min.)

Note: If the water intake time has been in-creased, then the water hardness selec-tor must be reset at one grade higherthan that stated in chapter “Water sof-tener” (except with setting 6).

Problem solving guideWith the aid of the following explana-tory notes, minor faults can be cor-rected without contacting the Miele Ser-vice Department.

Any work on the electrical compo-nents of the appliance should onlybe carried out by a suitably quali-fied and competent person in ac-cordance with local and nationalregulations. Unauthorised repairscould be dangerous.

Faults/possible causes

The dishwasher does not start

– The door is not properly closed.

– The plug is not properly inserted.

– The fuse is defective/has blown.

The dishes are not clean

– The dishes are incorrectly loaded.

– The wrong amount of detergent wasused.

– The stopcock was not fully opened.

– The water pressure is too low (toolittle water in the wash cabinet) – seechapter “Checking the water level”.

– The filter in the water inlet screw con-nection is blocked - see “Cleaningand care”.

– The filters in the wash cabinet arenot clean - see “Cleaning and care”.

– Spray arm jets are blocked - see“Cleaning and care”.

– The spray arms are obstructed byitems in the baskets.

White residue on cutlery and crockery

– Not enough rinse aid.

– No salt in the salt reservoir.

– Salt reservoir lid has not beenscrewed on properly.

Water in the wash cabinet at the endof a programme

– The drain hose is kinked.

– The drain pump or non-return valvemay be blocked. See “Cleaning andcare”.

The dishwasher must be installedand levelled.

Any unevenness in the floor levelcan be compensated for by adjust-ing the four screw feet.

The adjustment range is approx. 1 cm(85-86 cm total height).

Decor frame and decor panel

“Freestanding” dishwashers can besubsequently fitted with a decor frame(standard feature with some modelsonly).

This enables the front of the dish-washer to be fitted with a decor panelto match the kitchen furniture.

The front can be fitted with a base unitfront to match the kitchen furniture.

By using a decor set GDU “i” modeldishwashers can be converted into abuilt-under “U”model dishwasher.The decor set is supplied with a separ-ate installation instruction leaflet.

To ensure stability, these dish-washers must only be installedunder a continuous worktop whichmust be securely screwed to neigh-bouring units.

Range of adjustment approx. 5 cm (82-87 cm total height).

On worktops with wood or laminateedging, the tacks should be nailedthrough the holes further back fromthe edge.

2.Building the dishwasher into a niche

Connection to water and drainageshould be sited beside and not behindthe dishwasher for accessibility. Con-nections are usually made in the areaunder the sink. Many kitchen unit manu-facturers provide a cutout in the baseof the sink base unit for the hoses to befed through. If the base unit has no opening and ifthere is not an opening through the plintharea for connections, one must be cut. Suggested dimensions: 60 x 110 mm.

For some installation steps it isnecessary to pull the dishwasherslightly out of the recess. Thereforedo not make these connections untillast.

The slides make installation of the dish-washer easier and protect the floorfrom possible damage when movingthe appliance into and out of the re-cess. They are also used for adjustingthe height of the rear screw feet.

Adjust the height manually before in-stalling the dishwasher. Leave aspace of approx. 5 mm below theworktop to allow the dishwasher tobe pushed back easily into the re-cess. Make sure that the dishwasherstands level.

Press the slides - with the ratchet atthe rear - under the screw feet.

Push the dishwasher right back intothe recess. Ensure that drain hose,inlet hose and electric cable are laidto reach the connection point withoutany kinks.

Adjust the rear screw feet to the re-quired height.

Higher = turn clockwise

Lower = turn anti-clockwise

Several turns are needed to adjust 1 mmin height. A battery-powered screw-driver could be used.

Adjust the front screw feet manuallyor with a flat blade screwdriver.

It is easier to adjust the screw feet if theweight of the dishwasher is not bearingdown on them.

If possible tip the machine slightly.

For fine adjustments it may benecessary to press with a screw-driver against the cogs of the feet.

Screw the feet out until the dishwasheris right up against the underside of theworktop, to which it will be screwedlater. Ensure that the dishwasherstands level.

3. Fitting the facia panel

The facia panel is delivered separatelyin the colour ordered with the relevantaccessories.It has to be fitted to the dishwasherwhen it is being installed.

Press out the adapter strips from thefitting slits in the facia panel.

Fit the seal supplied b into thegroove surrounding the ventilationgrille c.

Push the ventilation grille c into posi-tion.

Place the facia panel d in positionand screw into place from the insideof the door using the six screws e.

Attach the switch knobs f.

Only applicable when using the GDUdecor set (to convert an "i" version to abuilt-under "U" version)

If the GDU decor set is being used, theadapter strips g must first of all beremoved, and stored for possible usein the future. See also the separate in-structions for fitting the GDU decor set.

Press out the adapter strips from thefitting slits in the facia panel.

4.Matching the facia panel to the dimensions of the adjacent drawer fronts

The facia panel can be aligned with thedrawer fronts of the kitchen units by ad-justing the spacer bars.

Using an 8 mm socket spanner turnclockwise or anti-clockwise until therequired height is reached.

If necessary some or all spacer barscan be removed.

Adjustment range:

from 112 mm: facia panel without spacer bars

to 145 mm: facia panel with four spacer bars,

to 154 mm: using a fifth spacer bar (special accessory at

extra cost).

Please note

After adjustment cut off any protrudinglengths of the screws.

5.Fitting the (matching) doorfront

The door of a kitchen base unit (withoutthe drawer facia or fittings) is normallyused for the door front.

The door front is fixed to the machinedoor outer panel using a fixing bracketwhich has to be pre-mounted on therear of the door front.

Fixing brackets are already fitted on tothe stainless steel door front. This frontcannot be shortened.

Door fronts differ in weight and it is therefore essential that the doorsprings are adjusted (see Step 6) after the door front has been fitted.

Calculate dimension “X” and make anote of it before attaching the fixingbracket.

Dimension “X” is the dimension shownon the illustration between the drill holein the outer door panel and the loweredge of the neighbouring unit door(s).

Installing integrated "i" Dishwashers

Lay the door front with the rear sidefacing upwards.

Using a pencil draw a vertical linedown the middle of the door to useas a guide line.

Draw a horizontal guide line acrossthe door, at a distance from the loweredge of the front panel equalling thepreviously measured dimension “X” .

The fixing bracket is marked in themiddle A.

Lay the bracket on the rear side ofthe door front so that the marks A inthe middle of the fixing bracket alignwith the vertical guide line, and thelower fixing holes of the bracket arecentrally positioned in the horizontalguide line (see illustration). Usestrips of adhesive tape to hold thebracket in this position.

Drill the fixing holes to a depth ofabout 10 mm, using a 2.5 mm drill bit.

Secure the bracket to the door usingthe screws supplied.

Double check for correct alignmentbefore building into the recess.

Installation integrated “i” Dishwashers

Pull the dishwasher out of its recessenough to allow easy access to theside fixing screws for the door front.

Hang the door front into the slits inthe machine door outer panel, adjustfor height and secure.

Secure the door front by turning thescrews clockwise at each side of themachine door outer panel.

Plug the openings for the fixingscrews using the plastic stoppersprovided.

6.Adjusting the door springsThe door springs are correctly adjustedwhen a half opened door (approx. 45°opening angle) remains in that positionwhen released.

If the door drops down, then the doorsprings need to be tightened.

If, however, it rises up, then the springsneed to be released.

The adjusting screw is located in theupper front strip at the left hand side ofthe dishwasher.

Open the dishwasher door.

Adjust the door spring until it is cor-rectly balanced:– turn clockwise = tighten– turn anti-clockwise = loosen.

7.Level and secure the dishwasher

To ensure the stability of the dish-washer it must be screwed to the con-tinuous worktop after it has been posi-tioned.

Fit the securing pieces into the slotson both the left and right hand sides.

Push the dishwasher into the recess.

Open the dishwasher door.

The hole in the securing piece mustline up with the oval hole in the nirosteel plate.

Screw the countersunk screws (3.9 x 22) upwards through the se-curing pieces on the left and righthand sides into the work surface tosecure the dishwasher.

Ensure that the seal on the topedge of the dishwasher fits directlyagainst the worktop. If this is not thecase, adjust the height screwsmore, (see Step 2).

For “Corian” or granite worktops thereis a special accessory to fix the dish-washer to an adjacent kitchen unit.

Pull the dishwasher approx. 5-10 cmout of its niche.

Fit the lug of each fixing bracket intothe guide hole on top of the dish-washer, and then swing to the left orright side respectively.

Push the dishwasher back into theniche, align, and fix to the adjacentkitchen unit(s) with 2 screws (3.5 x 15)for each bracket.

8.Matching the plinth facia of akitchen run

The plinth area of the dishwasher is nor-mally covered with a plinth run match-ing the kitchen furniture.

The height (H) of the plinth facia aroundthe dishwasher depends on the plinthreturn (R) and how much the door frontextends below the dishwasher door (P).

Place the plinth facia directly in frontof the kitchen run but do not attach.

Carefully open the dishwasher door.

If the door front comes into contact withthe kitchen plinth when the dishwasherdoor is opened the plinth facia in thearea around the dishwasher doorneeds to be cut to size.

To do this mark where the edge ofthe door front comes into contactwith the plinth facia.

Cut the plinth facia to size along thisline.

Place the plinth facia in front of thekitchen run again and check whetherthe dishwasher door can be openedfully.If it cannot, trim the plinth facia to thecorrect size.

Secure the plinth facia to the ad-jacent kitchen units.

If your kitchen does not have a plinthrun matching the kitchen furniture, theplinth area can be covered with a sep-arate plinth kit, available at extra cost.

Electrical connectionPlease follow the installation instruc-tions carefully.

This dishwasher is supplied readyfor connection to an a.c. singlephase supply, (230 - 240 V 50 Hz forthe UK and Australia). It is suppliedwith a mains cable and mouldedplug.

All electrical work should be carriedout by a competent person in ac-cordance with national and localregulations. Connection should bemade via a fused plug and suitableswitched socket which is easily ac-cessible.For extra safety it is advisable to in-stall a residual current device (RCD)with a trip current of 30 mA.

The voltage, rated load and fuserating are given on the data plate.

Please ensure that these match thehousehold mains supply.

The wires in the mains lead are col-oured in accordance with the followingcode:

Green/yellow = earth

Blue = neutral

Non rewireable plugs BS 1363

If this machine or appliance is fittedwith a non-rewireable plug, the follow-ing information applies:

If the socket outlets are not suitable forthe plug supplied with this product, itmust be cut off and an appropriateplug fitted.

The plug cut from the flexible cordshould be disposed of and on no ac-count be inserted into a socket else-where in the house (electric shock ha-zard).

The fuse cover must be refitted whenchanging the fuse, and if the fusecover is lost, the plug must not be useduntil a suitable replacement is ob-tained. The colour of the correct re-placement cover is that of the colouredinsert in the base of the plug, or the col-our that is embossed in words in thebase of the plug (as applicable to thedesign of plug fitted).

The correct fuse rating of the replace-ment fuses that are ASTA approved toBS 1362 should be fitted. Replace-ment fuse covers may be purchasedfrom your local electrical suppliers, orMiele Service Agent.

(The German standard version is sup-plied with a cable and moulded plugfor connection to a 230 V single phasesupply. It must only be connected viaa fused 16 A socket).

PlumbingConnection to the water inlet

Water in the dishwasher must notbe used as drinking water.

The dishwasher may be connected toa cold or hot water supply, max. 60°C.Connection to a hot water supplywould save energy costs and time.When connected to a hot water sup-ply all programme stages whichwould otherwise be carried out withcold water (pre-wash and interimrinse) as well as the PRE-WASH willbe carried out with hot water.

The inlet hose is approx. 1.5 m long;a longer hose (4 m) may be boughtfrom the Miele Spare Parts Dept.

A stopcock with a 3/4" male threadmust be provided on site.

The dishwasher is constructed tocomply with DVGW regulations, andmay be connected to a suitable sup-ply without an extra non-return valveprovided that national regulationsallow this.

The water pressure (flow rate at thetake-off point) must be between 1.0and 10 bar pressure. If the water pressure is too low thewater intake time must be increased(see chapter “Checking the waterlevel”). If the water pressure is too high, apressure reducer valve must be fitted.

The water inlet hose must not beshortened or damaged in any way(see illustration).

Connect the inlet hose with the “Water-proof-System” preferably vertically(use an angle connector if necessary).

There must be a distance of at least20 cm between the floor and the bot-tom of the “Waterproof” unit hosing.

If the stopcock is situated in theworktop, a special angle connectorcan be ordered from the Miele SpareParts Dept. (Part No. 2078910).

Lay the hose in such a way that itdoes not rise above the bottom ofthe “Waterproof” unit casing (see il-lustration).

DrainageThe machine drainage system isfitted with a non-return valve, whichprevents dirty water from flowingback into the machine via the drainhose.

The dishwasher is supplied with ap-prox. 1.5 m of flexible drain hosewith an internal diameter of 22 mm.

The drain hose can be extendedusing a connection piece and anextra drain hose, (up to max. 4metres).

The connection socket on the dish-washer can be turned. The hose canthus be laid to the right or left withoutneeding to loosen the hose clip.

If the hose is to be directly fitted tothe drainage outlet on site, use thehose clip supplied.

The on-site water pipe connectionfor the drain hose may be designedto fit more than one diameter ofhose. The connection socket mustbe shortened if it juts too far into thedrain hose. Otherwise the drain hosecan become blocked.

The drain system must not exceed4 metres. The drain pump has amaximum delivery head of 1 metre.

The drain hose must not be short-ened.

Venting the drainage system

Open the dishwasher door fully.

If the site drain connection is situatedlower than the guide path for the bot-tom basket rollers in the open door thedrainage system must be vented.Otherwise a siphoning effect during aprogramme can cause the machine toempty itself of water.

To vent:

Cut off the top of the vent valve inthe wash cabinet.
