THE MIDNIGHT SUN
TRIP OVERVIEWSpend two weeks adventuring in the land of the
Midnight Sun, savoring the long lovely days of the Alaskan twilight. Explore a land so rugged and wild, getting around is limited to bush planes, paddles, passion, and your own two feet. You’ll
get to use each of these modes as you orient your Alaskan dial to the Chugach, Wrangell, and St.
Elias Mountain ranges. This park and preserve is the largest in the National Park system, and one
of the most unspoiled wildernesses in the world. Raft, climb, backpack, and immerse yourself fully
in this true wilderness.

EXPERIENCE HIGHLIGHTS

DAY 1 Land in Anchorage to meet your fellow adventure
teammates. Acclimate to the Alaskan rhythm as you spend
your first night together beneath the summer twilight.
DAY 2True Alaskan travel at its finest: take a bush plane over
the Wrangell Mountains. Cruise the epic range before you
explore it by foot, and get a good view of the adventure
ahead. Land in McCarthy where you’ll take a fascinating
tour of the historic Kennecott Mine before making
preparations for your backcountry section!
DAY 3-5Walk, climb, and traverse the Root Glacier as you learn
the art of ice climbing and glacier navigation. Walking
amongst blue moulins and cobalt caverns of ice, you’ll
use harnesses, crampons, and ice axes as you climb
the Stairway Icefall. Along the banks of this enormous
glacier, you’ll also get to explore a 14 story copper mine
where $200 million worth of copper was discovered
and processed in the early 20th century. These days will
include backpacking to the glacier and various technical
activities on and around the Root Glacier.
DAY 6-8Spend three days backpacking in the stunning Donoho
Basin. Learn to navigate the Alaskan wilderness using
map and compass and, carrying only what you need. Once
you’ve gotten the hang of life in the backcountry, you’ll
have a chance to summit bid Donoho Peak where you can
view the Kennicott and Root Glaciers carving out this
spectacular landscape.
DAY 9-12Following your backpacking section, you’ll spend four days
on a white water rafting expedition, spanning three rivers
fed by the glaciers and tributaries you’ve been exploring.
You’ll take your second bush plane of the trip out of McCarthy
heading on to charge the rapids and steep canyons of the
Copper River. Enjoy the incredible scenery by day and camp
on remote backcountry beaches by night.
DAY 11Regroup and relive the lifetime memories you have made in
Alaska on your last day together in Anchorage. Spend the
night celebrating your adventures at a well deserved banquet
dinner. On the final day, we will transfer to the airport
together and bid farewell to the last frontier!
