AUGUST 20: Thirteen Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA) mighty midgets joined four other divisions for Donnie Tilford Tribute night at the Placerville Speed- way on Saturday August 20 2016. Cory Elliott from Bakersfield set quick time in time trials as he toured the clay ¼-mile in 12.140 seconds to edge out McDougle’s Maria Cofer by .28 seconds, with Stockton’s Matt Streeter third fastest and Taylor Simas in Doug Bock’s Esslinger-powered Spike chassis to round out the fastest four cars. Randi Pankratz led the first laps of the first eight-lap heat race in her Edmunds/Fontana as she used the lower line before Matt Streeter powered by on the top side of the track. Streeter then pulled away for a convincing victory trailed to the finish line by Elliott and Simas. Brian Grad led all the way in the Arata Racing #88 Ellis chassis Storcks Garage entry to capture the second heat race over Michael Faccinto and Sparky Howard. Gard and Simas shared the front row for the 30-lap feature following a memorial lap dedicated to Bryan Clauson who grew up at Placerville Speedway watching his father race there. At the drop of the green flag, Gard and Simas battled around the bottom of the race track as Matt Streeter in third chose to run his 14jr Spike/Esslinger around the high side of track, with Maria Cofer in fourth trailed by Nate Wait. The action paused on lap 9 for a caution flag after Taylor Simas lost power in the #62 on the backstretch. After Simas was pushed back to the pit area, the intense race action resumed with Gard in the bottom groove and Streeter at the top. Streeter slowly reeled in Gard and stuck his nose ahead on lap 12, then led by a car length on lap 14. Behind the lead pair, Cory Elliott passed Cofer for third while behind the lead pack, Pankratz and Wilson fought for position, and Floyd Alvis, Bill Lindsey, and JR Williams continued to battle. On lap 19, Gard recaptured the lead as Elliott briefly tried the top side of the track and fell back to fifth position, but by on lap 22 Cory had regained fourth place when the yellow flag flew for Bobby Wilson’s spin in turn three. Bobby restarted and joined the tail of the field for the restart, as Streeter and Elliott both took to the high groove while Gard, Pankratz and Cofer continued to use the low groove. Streeter forged back into the lead on lap 28, as Elliott nipped Gard on the last lap to claim sec- ond place, with Randi Pankratz and Maria Cofer in fourth and fifth respectively. A big “Thank you” to the Placerville Speedway staff for providing a super racing surface with two very good racing grooves which resulted in an exciting race for the fans.

SCHUTTE GOES BACK-TO-BACK By Kevin Triplett PLACERVILLE SPEEDWAY. JULY 23: Placerville Speedway saw eighteen of the mighty Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA) midgets in action at Placerville Speedway in a joint program with the track’s Thompson's Auto Group 360 cubic inch winged sprint cars on “Big Trophy Night.” The BCRA ‘regulars’ were joined by USAC racer Randi Pankratz, recent college graduate Sean Dodenhoff, 1999 BCRA champion Matt Streeter, Nate Wait and young phenom Michael Kofoid who was pulling double duty. In the drivers meeting, BCRA Business Manager Linda Manning announced that Chief Referee Karl Hokanson was under weather and that BCRA president Rick Holbrook would fill in for Karl for the evening. Ms. Manning also shared that the tentatively scheduled August 27 BCRA midget race date at the Stockton dirt track will not be held. The six-car starting lineups for the three 8-lap heat races were set by pill draw, but unfortunately during hot laps, Doug Hunting’s Honda engine suffered terminal valve train damage and Hunting’s #2 Spike entry was scratched for the rest of the program. At the drop of the green flag the first heat race, Sean Dodenhoff in his #9D powered into the lead from his pole starting position to the topside of the race track and never looked back as he went wire-to-wire ahead of Cory Elliott and Michael Kofoid. Pole sitter Nick Foster took the lead in Dave LaMott’s #24 Spike/Honda at the start of the sec-ond heat race and held on for the first circuit before Alex Schutte powered his #28 Spike/Esslinger past into the lead. Schutte’s car sped around the top of the track as Foster and Pankratz staged an exciting battle for second place. Alex took the checkered flag ten car lengths ahead of Foster who was followed closely by Pankratz. In the third heat race, Dustin Golobic and Wait battled side-by-side around the race track for the first few circuits before Golobic pulled away as he used the high groove while Wait fought off the charge of Matt Streeter. Streeter finally slipped underneath Wait as the pair raced through turn one on lap six to finish second behind Golobic’s Esslinger-powered Spike. Pankratz and Kofoid led the field to the green for the 30-lap feature and Randi used the bottom of the track to pull into the lead as Kofoid’s Mike Sala-owned Spike slid high in turn two. As the field entered turn three, the hard-charging Kofoid ran over the left rear of Foster’s machine and overturned. Behind Kofoid, Brian Gard in the #88 Ellis/Chevy also rolled over as JR Williams and Bill Lindsey came to a stop. With the red flag displayed, the Placerville Speedway safety crew helped Kofoid from the car and he walked to the ambulance. The EMT’s took their time and carefully checked over young Kofoid as he also flipped over in a sprint car race Friday night. After a few tense moments it was announced that Michael Kofoid was OK and released to race; he placed fifth in the 360 winged sprint car feature race later in the evening.

Chad Nichols captures the Tom Manning Memorial By Kevin Triplett

STOCKTON 99 SPEEDWAY. AUGUST 6: Tony Noceti’s Stockton 99 Speedway hosted the Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA) midgets and vintage midgets as part of an all open-wheel program. Besides the mighty BCRA midgets, the evening’s slate featured the Legends of Kearney Bowl, the San Jose Supermodifeds, and the King of Wing Sprint Cars. During the first hot lap session, Nick Foster Jr. was blazingly fast in Dave LaMott’s new creation before the Honda engine failed which forced the Roza Motorsports/Finishline Construction team to scratch the #42 car for the evening. The start of time trials was delayed for 45 minutes after the throttle on King of the Wing competitor Jimmy Hamilton’s car stuck open and he made heavy contact with the first turn wall. Hamilton was transported to a local hospital and is recovering from multiple broken bones. In time trials, Chad Nichols, set the mark to beat in the #17 Finish Line Construction Shanoian Special toured the high banked ¼-mile oval in 13.060 seconds. David Goodwill was close behind at 13.193 seconds, as Nick Chivello and Scott Pierovich rounded out the four fastest qualifiers. Nichols won the first 6-lap heat race in convincing fashion over Chivello in Bob Rosen’s Fontana powered #4 Beast with Darin Snider a close third in his #6K Mopar-powered S&K Automotive Beast. David Goodwill in his #3G DDS Racing Beast/Mopar edged out Pierovich in the blue #17K Del Morris owned Esslinger-powered Beast chassis to claim victory in the second heat race. Before the start of the 30-lap feature Stockton 99 promoter Tony Noceti shared his memories of Tom Manning and presented Linda Manning with a lovely bouquet of flowers. Before the start of the first annual Tom Manning Memorial race, the starting field circled the speedway in the missing man formation to honor Manning’s memory as Floyd Alvis carried the checkered flag. The drivers earlier voted to make the starting lineup for the 30-lap feature a full invert, so Goodwill and Nichols started side-by-side from the fourth row, and JR Williams chose to tag the tail of the field in his #74 J & J Racing Beast chassis. At the drop of the green flag, Bill Lindsey in Stu Donaldson’s bright yellow #8 led the field into turn one, but as the field moved down the backstretch the first time, Snider took the lead with Chivello in close pursuit. On lap three Nichols made the first of several attacks on Chivello on the low side of turns three and four, but Chivello was able to fend off Nichols’ repeated passing attempts as Bobby Wilson rode in fourth place. Ahead of the battle for second place, Snider built up a five car length advan-tage which was erased when the caution flag flew for the first time on lap 10 after Chivello spun and made contact with the turn two wall which ended the #4 car’s evening. When the racing resumed after the cleanup, Nichols attacked Snider on the low side of turns three and four, and after his first failed attempt, the #17N took the race lead at the stripe on lap 14. Snider immediately tried the same low low-side move on Nichols, but the #6K spun to a stop on turn four to bring out the race’s second caution flag. Snider restarted at the tail of the field which moved Pierovich and Goodwill to second and third place in the running order respectively. As Pierovich and Goodwill battled for second place, Chad Nichols’ bright orange machine built up a ten car length advantage while Snider raced back up to fourth place. Over the final few circuits Snider tried to pass Goodwill on the low side on turns three and four to no avail, and at the check-ered flag the top four finishers were Nichols, Pierovich, Goodwill, and Snider with Bobby Wilson in fifth ahead of Bill Lindsey in sixth place.

Chad Nichols does it again! By Kevin Triplett

LAKEPORT SPEEDWAY. AUGUST 13: The Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA) mighty midgets paid a visit to Lakeport Speedway on Saturday night August 13 2016 as part of the track’s Fan Appreciation Night program with the BCRA vintage midgets and the track’s regular contingent of Bandeleros, Jammers, Bombers, and Legends cars. Chad Nichols in the #17N Shanoian Special topped the field in time trials with a best lap of 12.015 seconds around Lakeport’s nearly circular paved ¼-mile oval. Nichols was joined in the 4-lap trophy dash by Michael Snider in his family’s #6K Beast, Darin Snider in the Champion Auto-motive #18, and Scott Pierovich in Del Morris’ #17K Beast/Esslinger. At the drop of the green flag for the trophy dash, pole-sitter Pierovich jumped into the lead and held the lead for all four circuits to claim the win. Floyd Alvis and Bobby Wilson paced the field to the green flag for the 10-lap heat race, and Alvis led the first lap in his Stealth/Buick, before Pierovich executed a nifty outside move through turn one on the second lap to grab the lead. Later in the race, Nichols snuck around Alvis with his own outside pass to grab second place. At the drop of the checkered flag the finishing order was Pierovich, Nichols, Alvis, Wilson and JR Williams, as both Darin and Michael Snider failed to finish. Before the evening’s feature races began, BCRA members joined a group of cars and drivers staged on the front straightaway for a very popular “meet and greet” session with the fans. Before the national anthem, fans and racers alike paused for a moment of silence for fallen racing hero Bryan Clauson, who passed away after an accident during the Belleville Nationals. As an additional tribute Saturday night all the BCRA racers carried a “BC” sticker on their race cars. The evening’s fast qualifier Chad Nichols drew the “0” pill in the re-draw for the 30-lap feature lineup and thus started from the pole position. After the first start was called back, the field roared in the turn one with Nichols on point followed closely by Michael Snider and Pierovich. As Pierovich and Snider fought for second place, Nichols began to pull away from the field. Pierovich passed Michael Snider with a slick inside move through turn three to claim second place, but by that point Nichols held a 20-car length advantage. As the race continued non-stop, Pierovich was unable to cut appreciably into Nichols’s lead as the pair worked lapped traffic. Mid-race, JR Williams experienced mechanical problems and pulled his #74 J & J Stealth into the infield, far enough off the racing line so that the racing action was not interrupted. Michael Snider’s car faded in the late laps and the cars of Darin Snider and Bobby Wilson both got around the #6K. Nichols led Pierovich, Darin Snider, Bobby Wilson, Michael Snider and Floyd Alvis to the checkered flag. The battle for the BCRA season championship heads to Placerville Speedway on the El Dorado County Fairgrounds Saturday night August 20 as part of an action-packed 5-class program for Donnie Tilford Tribute night.

Craig Dillards wins 3rd Annual Wayne Albright Memorial Placerville Speedway. July 30, 2016: The BCRA Midget Lite portion of the program featured 20 cars that ventured to the Placerville Speedway for the 6th time in 2016 for the 3rd Annual Wayne Albright Memorial Race. Craig Dillard and Scotty Males led the field to the green with Dillard getting the early jump, pulling away from the rest of the field. On lap two, Kyle Offill drove around Scotty Males to take over second, but then spun in turn 2 to draw the yellow on lap four. As the race continued, Charlie Caraccilo applied pressure on the leader when the duo reached traffic, but Dillard was too tough to handle and went on to win his first race of the year by leading all 20 laps. Caraccilo settled for second followed by Males in third. Meanwhile, fourth went to Kyle Offill rebounding after his spin on lap four forced him to charge through the field. Doug Nunes rounded out the top five. The two 8-lap heat race winners were Scott Kinney and Bobby Michnowicz.Recap:Heat #1: 1. Scott Kinney #25, 2. Charlie Caraccilo #87, 3. Kyle Offill #2k, 4. 2016 VINTAGE SCHEDULE

June Wheeler-Ferreira August 15

Hi all, well we had another hot time at Lakeport and I do mean hot on Saturday August the 13th. The weather was in the high 90’s and to top it off there was a big forest fire as I’m sure you are aware of that, smoked was seen at the far end of the race track from where the fire was burning. After the races we got the word that HY 29 was closed and we would have to take 29 North to 20 which was open with no problems and we made it with no problems to101, but with all that said we had a fun day. Midgets and vintage midgets were down on cars but everybody got plenty of track time, Hot laps, Heat, and a Main. They also had the regular Saturday night division running the Bandoleros, Taco Bell Bombers, Jammers, Legends, so there was plenty of racing. There was a fan appreciation for everyone to come down out of the stands to look at the cars, in which they enjoyed, so other than the heat things went pretty smooth, had fun. Next stop will be Calistoga over Labor Day, the 9th Annual Louie Vermeil Classic, hope to see all there. Our 4 drivers and cars at Lakeport; #16 Tommy & Sammy Belfiore; #17 Doug & Patty Shanoian; #30 Norm Gray; #36 Paul & June Ferreira/driver Richard Walsh.
