They have a strong chance of winning the carnival, but still have to perform well in the 40-over game today against Dar- win Bulls and finish the tourna- ment strongly tomorrow in a 40-over game against Darwin Sharks. Sam Dick and captain Tom Nixon have batted superbly dur- ing the opening four games, but it’s been a great team effort with several players stepping up and performing well, which has pleased coach Sean Huddle. Huddle said: ‘‘I’m ecstatic. They are far exceeding my ex- pectations and are playing really good cricket. ‘‘Sam and Tom have batted really well but, in the game where we scored 165 they didn’t get a bat, and Aiden Hookey scored a half century and Ryan Burns and Mitch Gridley also batted really well. ‘‘Young Tom Kelaart took a three-for in our morning game on Tuesday and, in our after- noon game, Harry Lambley took a four-for. ‘‘The whole team has jelled well together and I couldn’t ask for any more from them. ‘‘We gave the team a well- deserved rest yesterday after- noon and took them into town, and hopefully they can keep performing well during the next two days.’’ Alice Springs got off to a good start on Monday, defeating the Darwin Rays in a 40-over game, by five wickets. They bowled out Darwin Rays for 186 off 38.2 overs, with Dick getting 3/34 off eight overs and Lambley also bowling well to get 3/33 off 6.2 overs. The Eagles lost early wickets but a superb 63 not out from captain Tom Nixon guided Alice Springs to victory. Nixon was well supported by Dick, who scored 40 and had a 124-run partnership with Nixon. Kelaart, who is one of two 10-year-old players on the team, showed off his talents in the first twenty20 game on Tuesday, taking 3/23 to restrict the Dar- win Bulls to 5/122, and Dick (50 retired) and Nixon (44 not out) batted superbly as Alice Springs won the game by nine wickets with four overs remaining. In their second twenty20 game on Tuesday, Hookey scored a half century and Burns (47) and Gridley (32) also contributed to guide Alice Springs to 5/165 against Darwin Sharks. Superb bowling from Lambley didn’t give the Sharks a chance, taking 4/10 to restrict them to 6/78 off their 20 overs. Alice Springs then made it three-from-three in the shortest for of the game by defeating Darwin Rays by 22 runs yester- day. They posted a competitive score of 6/135, with Dick leading the way with a half century before a great bowling effort restricted Darwin Rays to 5/113. Stokes shines SOFTBALL Dale Fletcher CENTRALIAN soft- ball product Vanessa Stokes lived out a child- hood dream on Tues- day. Stokes was the lead- off pitcher in Austra- lia’s 3-0 World Cup of Softball VII final loss to the USA in Oaklahoma. She said: ‘‘It was a great game but unfor- tunately we couldn’t come away with the win. ‘‘I felt good out there, but I was very nervous and very proud. ‘‘It’s a real shame we didn’t win.’’ Stokes pitched the first four innings for the Aussie Spirit, allow- ing three hits and two runs with six strike outs. The USA started strongly, scoring two runs in the opening inning, putting the Australians on the back foot. Stokes was replaced at the start of the fifth inning by Aimee Murch, who conceeded a home run in her opening inning on the mound. She said: ‘‘We didn’t bat too well as a team and didn’t put enough pressure on them.’’ Australia won four out of their six matches, losing to the USA on both occasions. Stokes pitched two innings for three strike outs in the Aussie Spirit’s 6-2 win over Puerto Rico in a pool game on June 30. The World Cup of Softball VII was a warm-up event for the ISF XIII World Cham- pionships, which starts in Yukon, Canada on July 13. She said: ‘‘The team is working well togeth- er and we are looking forward to the World Championships.’’ Vanessa’s mother, Fiona Stokes, said she has had a lot of com- ments from the local community regarding her daughter. She said: ‘‘People have come up and asked how Vanessa has been going, and the in- terest has been great. ‘‘I couldn’t watch the final but I was kept up to date on the com- puter and I was getting phone calls from family who were watching the game.’’ Fiona will travel to Canada next week to watch Vanessa play in Yukon, and said it will be a proud moment. ‘‘It’s unfortunate that not everyone will get to go and watch her play but it’s going to be a real thrill to see her on the mound,’’ Fiona said. Kids to star in Top End CRICKET Warren Thomson ALICE Springs’s emerging cricket stars will be in Darwin next week, competing in the under-15 and under-17 Mid Year Carnival which starts on Mon- day. Both squads are full of talent, with several under-17 players play- ing A grade cricket dur- ing the recent Alice Springs Cricket Associ- ation season. But the under-15 team is also full of tal- ent and will be coached by 2011-2012 A grade Cricketer of the Year Rob Kensey. NT Cricket Alice Springs development officer Phil Lovell said: ‘‘Three young players to keep an eye out for are Sam Dick and Tom Nixon, and Matthew Green who is from Tennant Creek. ‘‘All players im- pressed many earlier in the year with their per- formances in the NT under-13 team at the national carnival in Cobram, Victoria. ‘‘This side, under the leadership of Rob Kensey and Jeremy Bigg, are very well coached and I think the team will be very com- petitive in Darwin.’’ Dick and Nixon will already have some game time under their belts before the under- 15 tournament as they are playing in the under-13 team this week. With several regular A grade players in the under-17 team, such as Ben Ellis, Andrew Pilbrow, Ned Gaynor and under-17 captain Jayden Dick, the under- 17 team are also ex- pected to do well in Darwin. ALICE Springs has got off to agreat start to the Mid-Year Car-nival with their under-13 teamstill undefeated after winningall three twenty20 games andwinning a 40-over game.

They have a strong chance ofwinning the carnival, but stillhave to perform well in the40-over game today against Dar-win Bulls and finish the tourna-ment strongly tomorrow in a40-over game against DarwinSharks.

Sam Dick and captain TomNixon have batted superbly dur-ing the opening four games, butit’s been a great team effort withseveral players stepping up andperforming well, which haspleased coach Sean Huddle.

Stokes was the lead-off pitcher in Austra-lia’s 3-0 World Cup ofSoftball VII final loss tot h e U S A i nOaklahoma.

She said: ‘‘It was agreat game but unfor-tunately we couldn’tcome away with thewin.

‘‘I felt good out there,but I was very nervousand very proud.

‘‘I couldn’t watch thefinal but I was kept upto date on the com-puter and I was gettingphone calls from familywho were watching thegame.’’

Fiona will travel toCanada next week towatch Vanessa play inYukon, and said it willbe a proud moment.

‘‘It’s unfortunatethat not everyone willget to go and watch herplay but it’s going to bea real thrill to see heron the mound,’’ Fionasaid.
