INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENTNOTE

Thank you for believing in the mission and vision of Mid-Pacific and for your continued support of our students and teachers. In 2018-2019, we exceeded our Annual Fund goal and together raised $1,122,000 in support of Mid-Pacific students, faculty and staff.

Each Mid-Pacific Annual Fund gift impacts the future now. Tuition covers just 83% of Mid-Pacific’s operations and programming, with the remaining support coming from the school’s endowment and the Annual Fund. In addition to supporting basic operations, the Annual Fund enables Mid-Pacific to continuously develop and offer innovative programs that prepare our students to thrive in school and in life.

Thank you to our parent and alumni volunteers who made this accomplishment possible.

M ANY MID-PACIFIC alumni and their families who decide to make charitable donations to the school get great satisfaction from establishing or contributing to

endowment funds, so that their gifts can continue giving on an ongoing basis. Here are three recent examples.

terms of endowment Mid-Pacific donors give perpetual gifts

CHARACTER COUNTS Hazel Theodore had never been much of a sports fan herself, but something changed in the way she thought about athletics after her grand-nephew Marcus Oshiro became an athletic trainer at Mid-Pacific Institute. Theodore had been a big admirer of Mid-Pacific for years, attending many events, plays and hula programs on campus. She knew the school’s reputation for innovation, arts, and performance was well deserved, but she had never spent much time watching sporting events. As Oshiro’s kids Ian ’19 and Zoe ’21 grew up, Theodore began to see how their participation in sports programs played a role in their per-sonal development, and her whole perspective changed. She realized the importance of athletics in shaping students’ core values during their formative years. “I decided that maybe I should help,” Theodore said. “I thought, if I support the sports program, it can really make a difference in the development of a student’s character.” Her gift to the school’s Choy-Laird-Theodore Athletics Fund, an endowment for the athletics de-partment, was designed to ensure that the funds will grow over time and continue providing benefits to Mid-Pacific sports teams in perpetuity.

THE “FOREVER” GIFT The concept of an endowment makes sense in situations where a donation is substantial enough to be invested so that the returns on investment can be applied to meeting the school’s needs on an ongoing basis, while the original principal investment remains untouched. Through the endowment process, a large donation can continue to benefit the school in perpetuity, and the structure allows for smaller donations to be added at any time by anybody, so the tax benefits of the charitable contribution can be received by all participants. Plus, everyone involved in building the endowment becomes part of its lasting legacy. Endowments truly are gifts that keep on giving. THE HOME RUNAnother Mid-Pacific family with passion for the athletic program, Carol and Dr. Neil Furuya (whose children Wesley, Ryan ’06, and Joyce ’14 also went to Mid-Pacific) established a special endowment this year specifically to support Mid-Pacific baseball and honor Carol’s uncle Carlton Hanta ’48. Hanta was a standout player at Mid-Pacific who went on to make baseball the focus of his career. Hanta was se-lected for the All-American college team while playing for the Univer-sity of Houston in 1953, the first Japanese-American to receive that honor, and was eventually drafted to play professionally in the minor leagues in Japan, serving as short-stop for the Nankai Hawks in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Hanta continued his career as a coach after multiple seasons as a player, and his style made a positive impact on the players he coached — includ-ing Dunn Muramaru, who went on to become a legendary baseball coach at Mid-Pacific. Setting up the Carlton Haruo Hanta ’48 Memorial Endowment Fund made sense for the Furuyas, not just as a way to give back to the school and honor Hanta’s achievements, but also as a way to make it easy and financially sensible for others to follow suit. “We wanted to provide a vehicle for other people to donate to the school, and structure it as a charity,” said Furuya. “This approach provides a means for people to deduct their contributions on their tax returns, as an additional benefit.”

Carlton Hanta ’48 played shortstop and utility infielder for the Nankai Hawks, a team in the Japanese Pacific League that advanced to the Japan World Series in 1959. In the following season, Hanta was selected as an all-star.

Class of 1962 gathered for their 50th reunion. Jeanne (Koike) Okutani is seated in the front row, second from the right.

A CLASS (OF 1962) ACTWhen Peter Okutani (father of Kris Kobayashi ’91) decided to make a donation in honor of his late wife Jeanne, he discussed it with their daughter Kris and her husband Patrick Kobyashi ’91, whose class-mate Marc Nakamoto ’91, explained the positive impact a perpetual gift can have on the school. Okutani established the Jeanne S. Koike ’62 Endowment in Honor of the Mid-Pacific Class of 1962 as a way to give back to the school on an ongoing basis. “My mom’s love for the school, and for her classmates, was enor-mous,” said Kris Kobayashi ’91. “The class of 1962 was very close, they still get together. So for our family, we wanted to establish something that reflected her love for the school and also honored her classmates.” For Kobayashi ‘91, whose son Adam ‘25 is currently in 7th grade, and brother Craig Okutani ’88 is also an alum, the family’s passion for the school is memorialized through the endow-ment. Even though it was estab-lished after her mother passed away, Kobayashi knows it would have made her mother so happy she wishes they had done it sooner. It is their hope that the endowment will continue to grow, much as their family has grown together through their shared experi-ence at Mid-Pacific.

Each fiscal year, Mid-Pacific is the recipient of hundreds of generous contributions from loyal indi-viduals, foundations, trusts, corporations and organizations. Gift clubs celebrate this broad-range of donors whose yearly support make a profound difference in the lives of our students. Mahalo nui loa to these donors during fiscal year 2018-2019 (August 1, 2018 – July 31, 2019) for placing students at the heart of their treasures, and for empowering Mid-Pacific to uphold the highest standards of educational excellence.

Mahalo to the individuals listed below who stepped up to participate in last year’s Pueo Pacesetter’s program. Through their generosity, we secured over $200,000 in Annual Fund gifts and pledges. This momentum launched last year’s campaign and inspired many others to give at their highest level. Together, we impacted the lives and aspirations of every Mid-Pacific student. Thank you for setting us up for a successful campaign.

Lifelong Friendship, Giving and Learning I T IS WITH TREMENDOUS GRATITUDE that Mid-Pacific’s planned giving program is gaining significant mo-

mentum. Many of our past and present Trustees and leadership team have committed to a planned gift. We now host Heritage Society ceremonies to welcome and thank individuals who have generously identified Mid-Pacific in their

estate plans. We also introduced a series of Estate Planning 101 seminars which attracted more than 100 people includ-ing staff, faculty, alumni, parents and grandparents.

In 2018, Mid-Pacific launched its inaugural issue of Legacy, a newsletter designed to feature alumni, parents, faculty, corporations, foundations and friends of Mid-Pacific Institute — all who are truly making a difference on campus. The newsletter can be found online and it is delivered to faculty, staff, Trustees, and alumni (Class of 1933-1983). Our second edition of Legacy is out and I hope that you will go online and read more about the wonderful stories of lifelong friend-ship, giving and learning. Here’s a look at what’s inside the newsletter along with many other stories.

E Kūlia Kākou, Let’s strive and aspire together
