North Carolina A&T State and South Carolina State in the south are the final two teams who have yet to start league play as both teams meet on Monday. • Florida A&M opened MEAC play with a sweep over North Carolina Central while Bethune-Cookman took 2-of- 3 from Savannah State. • The Hampton Lady Pirates and the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers were predicted to win the MEAC softball Northern and Southern Divisions, respectively. Delaware State was picked to finish second behind the Lady Pirates in a tight race as they received 10 first-place votes and 153 total points. Pollsters predicted another showdown between FAMU and rival Bethune-Cookman as the Wildcats were picked second after receiving 10 first-place votes and 130 total points. • Four teams have won more than 10 games as Bethune-Cookman leads the way with 16 wins while Hampton, Norfolk State and Florida A&M follow with 13, 12 and 10 wins, respectively. • Hampton’s DaSha Hill continues to lead the league in batting average with a .487 clip and is third with 37 hits and tied for second with two triples. Hill’s stolen base streak came to an end as she’s now 30-of-32 in that cat- egory. Bethune-Cookman’s Mariah Davis has quietly rose to the top of the leaderboard with a MEAC-best 39 hits, 23 runs and 25 stolen bases. MEAC Overview The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and www.MEACsports.com offers authorized media immediate access to original, up-to-date information from the MEAC and its member institutions.

About The MEAC The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) begins its 48th year of intercollegiate competition heading into the 2017-18 academic school year. Located in Norfolk, Va., the MEAC is made up of 13 outstanding historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State Univer-sity, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Sa-vannah State University and South Carolina State University. The MEAC sponsors 16 Division I (FCS) sports with auto-matic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason competition in baseball, bowling, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, softball, volleyball and men’s golf.

Annual Awards The MEAC will name first, second and third all-conference teams, league player of the year, defensive player, rookie and coach of the year. The awards will be announced in early May prior to the 2018 MEAC Softball Championship.

MEAC Players of the Week The MEAC will select a player, pitcher and rookie of the week throughout the season every Monday. The first weekly honors will commence on Monday, Feb. 12 and will con-clude Monday, May 7.

Postseason Awards The MEAC will name first and second All-MEAC teams, Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year at the conclusion of regular season play. All award winners are selected by the MEAC head coaches and sports informa-tion directors.

MEAC Softball Weekly Honors

Maryland Eastern Shore’s Heidi Smith and Norfolk State’s Hunter Halford were named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Softball Players of the Week, the conference announced today. Florida A&M’s Kyaira Brown was named Pitcher of the Week while Savannah State’s Tanisha Williams was selected as Rookie of the Week.

Smith (UTL, Jr., Odenton, Md.) completed the week with a .600 average (6-of-10) while driving in four RBI, two doubles and a home run. She also scored four runs while drawing two walks along with a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.100 slugging percentage. Smith’s best game came against South Carolina State in which she went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run.

Halford (1B, Jr., Jacksonville, N.C.) also went .600 (6-of-10) on the week with three RBI, two home runs, two runs scored, one triple and a walk. She finished with a .636 on-base percentage and a 1.400 slugging percentage. Halford was one of Norfolk State’s most consistent performers over the weekend as she had two hits in each of NSU’s three games played while hitting a pair of homers in the series finale versus Delaware State on Sunday.

Brown (P, Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) finished with a 1-0 record while recording a save as FAMU opened MEAC play with a series sweep over North Carolina Central last week. In 9.2 innings of action, she held opposing batters to a 1.86 ERA and a .182 batting average while striking out seven and allowing two earned runs.

Williams (P, Fr., Covington, Ga.) completed the week with a 1-1 record and a .090 ERA while recording eight strikeouts and one earned run in 10 innings of action.

Other Top PerformersToni Anderson (Florida A&M) hit .364 with two home runs and four RBI as FAMU swept NCCU in its league opener.

Cassidy Blackwell (Hampton) finished with a .500 average while driving in three runs and a triple in the series versus Howard.

Brooklyn Emory (Howard) batted .286 with a pair of hits and RBI in three games against Hampton.

Khaliyah Flournory (Delaware State) batted .455 with five hits, five RBI and two doubles in the series versus Norfolk State.

Allie Hotetz (Hampton) went 2-1 against Howard while strik-ing out a total of 17 batters.

Tuli Iosefa (Norfolk State) totaled three hits with an RBI and home run in the Delaware State series.

Drea Lesure (Savannah State) led Savannah State with a .500 average while adding three runs, six hits, a double and an RBI in five games.

Kayla Porter (Norfolk State) finished the series against Dela-ware State with a 1-1 record and a .323 ERA.

Jacki Smith (Bethune-Cookman) batted .429 with six hits, two runs and two RBI while recording 16 assists over the past week.

MEAC ANNOUNCES SOFTBALL PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has announced that Morgan State’s Amy Begg has been selected as the conference’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year while Bethune-Cookman’s Ryan Jackson was tabbed Preseason Player of the Year. Ten institutions were represented on the team led by Bethune-Cookman’ five selections. Delaware State, Florida A&M and Maryland Eastern Shore each had three selections while Hampton, Morgan State and North Carolina A&T State had two apiece.

All preseason honors were voted on by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.

A senior from Christchurch, New Zealand, Begg led the MEAC with 179 strikeouts and 20 wins on the mound as she posted a 2.31 ERA in 2017. A five-time MEAC Pitcher of the Week, Begg also led the league with seven shutouts and finished second in opponent batting average (.227). In her three-year career at Morgan State, Begg has amassed a total of 389 strikeouts.

Jackson was named the MEAC’s Player and Rookie of the Year in 2017 as she led the MEAC in batting average (.408), home runs (14), RBIs (47), total bases (118), on-base percentage (.483) and slugging percentage (.771). A three-time MEAC Player of the Week and two-time Rookie of the Week, the Chino Hills, Calif. native was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I National Freshman of the Year Top 25.
