1. POSITION OBJECTIVES To assist in the daily maintenance of Parks and reserves, roads and drainage,
reticulation systems and other works in the Kununurra Town site or Wyndham Town site
and surrounds.
To assist the waste disposal services team, provide landfill attendant services at the
Kununurra Landfill site to ensure the efficient operation of the disposal site.
To operate plant and equipment as required as part of the Shire’s town maintenance
workforce.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIESThe Town Maintenance Officer is primarily responsible for the following:
Town Maintenance
Assist other team members to maintain and construct projects that enhance or modify
Shire roads, drainage and traffic infrastructure, townships parks, sporting facilities,
public open space, reserves, streets, ablutions and Shire facilities;
Participate in Occupational Health and Safety, employee inductions and training;
Carry out various maintenance works under Supervision;
Work in a team environment and assist in maintaining productivity and efficiency;
Landfill Site
Direct traffic at landfill operating face to correct tipping areas and assist clients
with tipping of rubbish;
Check loads of rubbish for asbestos, oil, tyres, batteries, chemicals and other
hazardous goods and arrange appropriate disposal of these goods;
Pick-up litter from site and access roads to ensure the disposal site appears tidy to users
at all times;
Record all waste entering site;
Assist the Works Supervisor/Leading Hand (KNX) or Leading Hand (WYN) to solve
routine problems associated with the waste disposal operation;
Cover waste using heavy plant as required.
General
Attend training sessions relevant to work performance;
Attend team meetings when advised;

Seek out ways of improving performance of the team in association with other team
members;
Carry out other duties as required by the Supervisor;
To work in accordance with Council’s policies, procedures, processes and specifications.
Carry out duties in a safe manner and in full compliance with Occupational Health and
Safety legislation;

Extent of Authority: Under direct and indirect supervision, carry out all tasks to the
required standards, in accordance with the best practice principles
and in a manner ensuring safety of both the public and council
employees.

4. ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXTTo provide professional and efficient maintenance of parks and reserves, roads and drainage,
reticulation systems and other works in the Kununurra Town site or Wyndham Town site and
surrounds;
To provide professional and efficient landfill attendant services at Kununurra Landfill site to
ensure the safety of the general public and council employee;
To understand and work towards achieving the Shire’s Vision, Mission and Commitment
statements;
To behave in a professional, supportive manner and cooperate with fellow Officers;
Support behaviours that comply with the Shire’s values and strive towards a high standard of
service delivery to the organisation and the community.
5. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSO r g an i s a t i ona l :
Prepared to work scheduled overtime including weekends (depot site);
Prepared to work on a roster over 6 days including weekends (landfill site);
Demonstrated ability to operate heavy plant – e.g. Backhoe, Mower, Slasher, Body
Truck and Tracked Loader;
Ability to work with minimal supervision;
Ability to work in a team environment;
Display a reasonable level of initiative;
Ability to prioritise tasks and complete in a timely manner;
Skilled in dealing with the public by providing a high level of service;
Knowledge of the Council’s Safety Policy and employee responsibilities regarding
Occupational Health and Safety;
Knowledge of health and environmental requirements relating to waste disposal;

Provide courteous and prompt attention to requests for information;
Demonstration of a positive and proactive attitude;

Ensure compliance with and adherence to all legislative requirements and business
practices at all times.
Occupational Health and Safety:
There is an obligation to take reasonable care to ensure your own safety and health at
work and that of other persons in the workplace;
To observe all safe working practices as directed by the Supervisor/Manager and use of
personal protective equipment as provided;
Take care to ensure one’s own safety at work and that of others in the workplace;
Observe all safe working practices;
Report all accidents, incidents and any hazardous situation within your work
environment to your Manager;
All works are to be completed ensuring any foreseeable hazards have been rectified or
addressed in an approved or appropriate manner;
6. ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA – QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Level 3 Classification
Current C Class Driver’s License;
Excellent customer service skills;
Previous experience working with a Council or private enterprise in a similar role;
Understanding of Occupational Safety and Health requirements;
Ability to work in a team environment;
Current plant operators certificate – as required;
Level 4 Classification
Current LR Class Driver’s License (applicable to Western Australia);
Excellent customer service skills;
Previous experience working with a Council or private enterprise in a similar role;
Understanding of Occupational Safety and Health requirements;
Ability to work in a team environment;
Previous experience in operating Hand Booms (weed spraying);

Experience and knowledge of landfill operations;
Computer and data entry skills;
Experience in cash receipting;
Record keeping skills;
Traffic Controller’s Certificate;
Multiple current Plant Operator’s Certificates – as required.
7. OTHER REQUIREMENTSThe successful applicant will be required to submit the following documentation. The Shire of
Wyndham East Kimberley will reimburse costs associated with obtaining a medical and police
clearance.
National Police Clearance;
Medical Certificate;
Current Driver’s Licence;
Copies of certified qualifications; and
Copies of relevant machine tickets.
The successful applicant will be required to sign the staff code of conduct.
