What is Microsoft $urface? Revolutionary multi-touch

    computer with different look &feel.

It is a $urface with a computingplatform that responds tonatural hand gestures and real-world objects, helping peopleinteract with digital content in asimple and intuitive way.

Turns an ordinary tabletop intoa vibrant, interactive $urface.

    Provides effortless interaction

with digital content throughnatural gestures, touch andphysical objects.

$urface is a 30-inch display in atable-like form factor thats easyfor individuals to interact justlike in the real world.

Microsoft $urface represents afundamental change in the way weinteract with digital content.

This uses a multi touch screen as userinterface.

System composed of a horizontaltouchscreen under a coffee table-like$urface, with cameras mounted belowto detect user interaction activities.

$urface can simultaneously recognizedozens and dozens of movements such

as touch, gestures and actual uniqueobjects that have identification tagssimilar to bar codes.

    $urface computing-the technologybehind.

$urface that comes to life for exploring, learning, sharing, creating, buying andmuch more.

An Idea Inspired by Cross-Division Collaboration

The product idea for $urface wasinitially conceptualized in 2001 bySteven Bathiche of MicrosoftHardware and Andy Wilson ofMicrosoft Research.

In October, a virtual team wasformed.

Their vision was to mix the physicaland virtual worlds to provide a rich, interactive experience.

Humble Beginnings on an IKEA Table

The team presented the idea to BillGates, Microsoft Chairman.

The first prototype nicknamed'Prototype T1' was born.

The evolution of Microsoft $urface had

begun. As more applications were built, theteam saw the value of the computerbeyond simply gaming and began tofavor those applications that tookadvantage of the unique ability of

$urface to recognize physical objectsplaced on the table.

    Hardware Design

In 2004, the team grew andbecame the $urfaceComputing group.

    $urface prototypes,functionality and applications

were continuously refined. The team built more than 85early prototypes for use bysoftware developers, hardware developers and user

    researchers.

    Hardware Finalized

By 2005, the Microsoft$urface softwaredevelopment platform wasestablished and attentionturned to its form.

A number of differentexperimental prototypeswere built like a desk- heightmodel with a square top andcloth-covered sides, bar-height model etc.

    The hardware design wasfinalized.

    The $urface team transitioned from

prototyping ideas to building andpreparing to sell the first multi-touch,multi-user computer.

This year saw the first unveiling of$urface in its current form, a 30-inchdisplay table like form factor that's

easy for individuals or small groupsto interact with.

$urface was unveiled by MicrosoftChief Executive Officer Steve Ballmeron May 30, 2007 at the Wall Street

Journal's 'D: All things Digital'Conference in Carlsbad, California.

Features of$urface computing?A form of computing that offers a natural way of interacting with

information, rather than the traditional user interface.

Direct Interaction: The ability to"grab" digital information with hands- interacting with touch/gesture, notwith a mouse or keyboard.

  • 8/9/2019 Microsoft Surface Presentation

    13/29

MultiTouch: The ability torecognize multiple points ofcontact at the same time, not just one (Ex. One finger,

like with most touchscreens), but dozens.

  • 8/9/2019 Microsoft Surface Presentation

    14/29

MultiUser: The$urfaces screen ishorizontal, allowingmany people to cometogether around itand experience acollaborative, face

    toface computingexperience.

    15/29

Object Recognition:Physical objects can beplaced on the $urfacesscreen to triggerdifferent types of digitalresponses (Ex. cellphones, cameras, &

    glasses of wine).

    How does Microsoft $urface work?

Microsoft $urface usescameras and imagerecognition in the infraredspectrum to recognizedifferent types of objects suchas fingers, tagged items andshapes. This input is thenprocessed by the computerand the resulting interactionis displayed using rearprojection. The user canmanipulate content andinteract with the computerusing natural touch and handgestures, instead of a typicalmouse and keyboard.

    How does Microsoft $urface work?

The $urface is not a touch-sensitive screen device Thescreen itself is not electronic.

The $urface uses multipleinfrared cameras beneath thescreen/table top to sense objects, physical touch, etc.

The $urface recognizes objectsbased on shape or by usingdomino-style identification(domino tags) on the bottom ofthe objects.

    This information is processed

    and displayed using rearprojection.

Structure of Microsoft $urface(1) Screen: Diffuser -> multi-touch"

    screen. Can process multiple inputs

and recognize objects by their shapesor coded "domino" tags.

    (2) Infrared: The machine vision" isaimed at the screen. Once an objecttouches the tabletop -> the lightreflects back and is picked up byinfrared cameras.

    (3) CPU: Uses similar components ascurrent desktop computers -> Core 2Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and a256MB graphics card. Wirelesscommunication -> WiFi andBluetooth antennas (future -> RFID).Operating system -> modified versionof Microsoft Vista.

    (4) Projector: Uses a DLP light engine (rear-projection HDTVs).

Pros of Microsoft $urfaceLarge $urface area to viewdifferent windows andapplications.Data Manipulation - Selecting, moving, rotating and resizing

(manipulating objects on thescreen is similar to manipulatingthem in the manual world).Quick and easy to use.More Than One UserSeveralpeople can orient themselves ondifferent sides of the $urfacetointeract with an applicationsimultaneously (Max 52 points oftouch).Object Recognition - Increasedfunctionality aiding user in speedand ease of useTime saving by eliminating manyprocesses.

    Cons of Microsoft $urface

    Not portable and very expensive.

Privacy - Open for many to view.

Screen Visibility - Glare, finger prints/dirt and humaninteraction obscuring interface.

Poor Accuracy - Fat fingers are not as accurate as amouse or stylus.

Fatigue - Reaching across the table often can cause thearms to ache.

Objects needs to be tagged (domino tags or RFIDs).

At a phone store? Place cell phone on the $urface and getinformation, compare different phones, select service plan, accessories, and pay at table!

At a restaurant? View menu, order drinks and meal atyour table! Its a durable $urface you can eat off of(withstands spills, etc.). Need separate checks? Split bill at

and pay at table. Play games and use the Internet.

Microsoft $urfaces Future$urface will continue to be sold to and used by restaurants, retail, leisure and public entertainment venues.According to Pete Thompson, Microsofts general managerfor $urface computing, the $urface could potentially beavailable to the broader consumer market as soon as 2010.Microsoft goal is for consumers test the $urface in commercialsettings, and then want them in their own households.Microsoft wants to expand to the consumer market by making

a product people can use in their home environment (usingother $urfaces like desks or making a version that hangs on thewall).Computer scientists hope to incorporate this kind oftechnology in peoples daily lives Future goals are tosurround people with intelligent $urfaces (look up recipes onyour kitchen counter or table, control TV with coffee table, etc.)"I firmly believe that in the near future, we will havewallpaper displays in every hallway, in every desk. Every$urface will be a point of interaction with a computer, and for

that to happen, we really need interfaces like this." - Jeff Hanfounder of Perceptive Pixel and NYU professor.

CONCLUSIONfuture of computers. Fundamentally changesthe way we interactwith technology. $urface takes existing

technology and presentsit in a new way. It isn'tsimply a touch screen,

but more of a touch-grab-move-slide-resize-and-place-objects-ontop- of-screen, and thisopens up newpossibilities that weren'tthere before.
