3Personalised Retail Solutions

Introduction to LED’s

LEDs are solid state semiconductor

devices. Illumination is achieved when

a semi conductor crystal is excited so

that it directly produces a visible light in a

desired wavelength range (colour). LEDs

are low voltage, low current devices which

ultimately means they are a highly effi cient

light source.

Reduced power consumption and a

longer lifetime compared to other light

sources improves consumers total cost

of ownership signifi cantly. Dimmability

and fl exibility of use will provide new

possibilities for lighting designers. The

quality of light generated by light fi ttings

is extremely important to retailers.

The uptake of LED has been slow as

performance has not been able to rival

existing technologies. We are now

starting to produce LED luminaires and

light engines that are able to match and

even out-perform existing technologies.

The ConceptFounded by the Millington family, the idea

was to miniaturise theatre lighting and

deliver much needed drama into retail

lighting schemes.

We recognised client requirements at an

early stage and developed our capabilities

to meet them. This included:

• Energy effi cient products that are

durable

• An experienced team that design and

produce schemes that work

• Our temas have been developed to

support each individual customer

ensuring satisfaction is met or

exceeded

The HistoryInitially based in Swindon, Wiltshire,

Microlights relocated to the historic market

town of Marlborough in 1994. Further

offi ces were opened in France, Holland,

Dubai and Spain turning Microlights into

an internationally recognized lighting

manufacturer. Between 1994 and 2009

Microlights continued to refi ne its retail

specifi c products.


Microlights became part of Aurora Lighting

Group in 2009 enabling the company

to enhance new product development,

improve supply chain management and

take advantage of group resources in over

50 countries across the globe.

The FutureA move to our current premises in June

2011 signals our commitment to providing

an even better service to both customers

and employees alike. The facilities and

infrastructure developed enables us to

take advantage of our links to Asia whilst

continuing UK design and manufacture as

we grow.

New facility, new products, same values

The FacilityMicrolights are delighted to announce the move to a new 45,000 square foot facility in Swindon Wiltshire.This new facility and group resources in Asia has enabled Microlights to become a

comprehensively vertically integrated company. We are able to develop light sources that

work for our customers rather than buying an off the shelf product. As well as this our in-

house testing facilities mean that we are able to test and monitor products, guaranteeing

that their performance and lumen figures are correct and trustworthy.

Microlights has purchased a Pro-Lite NFMS goniophotometer system to generate

photometric data for our luminaires. Group facilities also include a Labshere radio

spectrometer. The move to upgrade in-house equipment has enabled us to keep up

with rapidly developing LED technology and test LED luminaires using state-of-the-

art equipment. Our core product range along with ‘special’ fittings are therefore more

powerful and are developed quicker than if outsourced.

At Home or AbroadExpansion into foreign markets can

present a number of problems for

retailers. Microlights experience and

project management enables a seamless

transition from national to international roll

outs.

In addition to our manufacturing and sales

operation in the UK, we have offices in

Dubai, France, Spain and Lebanon as well

as an expanding network of distributors.

Case Study

In an effort to reduce its energy demand and contribution to global warming, The Timberland Company announced that state of the art LED lighting will be replacing less effi cient incandescent spotlights in 70% of its North American stores by the end of 2009. By reducing the electricity used on a daily basis for lighting in its stores, Timberland expects to shrink the carbon footprint of its US stores by an additional 11%.

The track mounted adjustable Moon LED spotlights were used around the edge of the store to create accent lighting, using the same lamp and wattage as the down lights will ease any maintenance required.

Some key reasons why you should useLED Flexi Strip as part of your lighting toolkit:

Rigid Strip Profi les

• Flexi Strip can be shaped into almost anything and can meet the contours of various curves or shapes.

• As the power consumption of single LED’s is very low, generally 0.04-0.08W, most of the electricity is converted into light not heat.

• Low energy cost. The power consumption per foot is around 2.4W; compared to traditional T5 light fi xtures the power is several times lower, but the performance is the same if not better.

• They are environmentally friendly. LED’s are a solid state lighting technology. The majotity of material used in LEDs is recyclable.

• Long lamp life. With a lamp life of 30,000 hours, LED Flexi Strip last considerably longer than its traditional T5 comparatives.

• The only limitation is your imagination, Flexi Strip can be used almost anywhere! Under cabinets, tables, around cornicing or even scalloping in retail schemes.

• Installation of LED Flexi Strip is very easy, just peel off the adhesive tape and apply strips as required.

Beam Width

Blue figures show width of beam to ½ peak at 1m, 2m and 3m on the Axial plane.

Red Figures show width of beam to half peak at 1m, 2m and 3m on the transverse plane.

Beam spread to half peak. Blue shows vertical (axial plane) and red the horizontal transverse plane within the beam.
