Micro- and nano-encapsulation
ICN2 researchers have devised new technologies for encapsulating active ingredients like
medicines, dyes and fragrances at the micro- and/or nano-scale, and then using the resulting micro- or
nano-capsules to create new functional products like improved pharmacological formulations, microbicidal paints and slow-release laundry detergents
Encapsulation summary
► capsule materials: liposomes, organic polymers, coacervates, sol-gels, etc.
► Encapsulation methods: extrusion, fluid-bed coating, ionic gelation, interfacial / in-situ polymerization, spray-drying, solvent evaporation, etc.
► cargo: biocides, drugs, dyes, flavours, fragances, photochromic materials, etc.
► release mechanisms: chemical reactivity, pH, salinity, temperature, friction / mechanical pressure, etc.
► release duration: from a few hours to a few months ► applications: detergents and fabric softeners, drug delivery, paints and
coatings, etc. ► auxiliary services: end-product formulations, industrial process
development and scale-up
