Michigan's Da de los MuertosBy: Whitney Webb and Nicole Phillips

Holla clase! said Hollys excited Spanish teacher. The class grumbled back a small hello to Senora Nolin. The little ninos, were more focused on the later activities of Halloween instead of class.

The lack of attention did not put Senora Nolin down, she had a very important mission. Hollys Spanish teacher started talking about Da de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead!

After class got out, Holly could not stop thinking about Da de los Muertos. The bright colors of the decorated altar for their lost loved ones, delicious food, and Mexican music. She thought it was such a beautiful way to remember and celebrate somebodys life.

Holly only wished she lived in Mexico or Spain so she was able to celebrate.

WAIT! Holly excitedly said aloud. I can have my own Da de los Muertos celebration here in Michigan! So pleased with her great idea, Holly rushed home to tell her mama.

Hollys mother told her there was not enough time to put together a celebration for tonight. Mom! Da de los Muertos is celebrated for three whole days! Today, tomorrow, and the day after, we still have time! Holly explained to her mom.

To make it a true Da de los Muertos celebration, Holly and her mother called their whole familia to come and help.

Soon enough, Hollys whole house was filled with giggles of ninos, and clanking of pots and pans from the kitchen.

Sweet smells mixed with spices were whirling around the house. They seems to taunt the children. The plea of, just one little bite! was always shot down. Decorated, colorful candy skulls, tamales, and sweet bread called Pan de Muerto lined the counters.

Later on in the evening, Hollys family made their way to the cemetery where her grandparents were buried. There was much to bring, and many helping hands from Holly's familia.

Brought along with them late on November 2nd was a guitar to play some tunes and flowers to golden marigolds. The marigolds symbolized death in the Mexican culture, Holly learned in Spanish class.

When all the food was ate, funny memories shared, and Hollys grandparents had decorated graves, everybody said their goodbyes.

And made the tradition of celebrating Da de los Muertos every single year.

The End!
