================================================================Thank-you Nina, Marybeth and Rev. George: Dolores Hensley's Funeral Service================================================================The Running Community turned out in our Sunday best for Dolores Hensley's Funeral Service onSaturday. Marybeth Reader, Nina Bovio and the Rev. George White gave moving eulogies that had uslaughing, crying and smiling in turn. With Harrison's blessing, we captured the service.http://michiganrunner.tv/2011hensley/

==================================================Tracey Cohen Remembers Dolores Hensley: Unsung Heroes==================================================Unsung Heroes

It's been a rough week. The 'running' community has suffered a great loss.

Dolores P. Hensley, my friend and hero, died, Tuesday June 14th, 80 years young, despite valiant effortsto return to health, after suffering a stroke, nearly three years ago.

Dolores was not an elite runner, nor a runner at all.

Devoted wife, grandmother, friend, super volunteer, angel in disguise - words cannot do her justice, though I will try.

Dolores accompanied her husband, Harrison, to nearly every race, first to arrive, last to leave.

Registration, grunt work, finish line - whatever was needed, Dolores 'took care of business.'

Most famous she was for her smiling face, kind words, endless hugs and kisses - at the finish line noless, winter, spring, summer and fall.

Forget the finisher medals. Dolores offered more. Unlimited praise and affection for every runner, walker and wheeler to cross the finish line - sweat, body odor, weather conditions be darned.

Who does that?

Hensley baked too. For everyone. Birthdays, sure, but more just because. Harrison brought the racefliers, Dolores came with brownies, virtually right out of the oven.

Why?

That is who she was.

Heart of gold, boundless energy, unlimited kindness.

Though Dolores was a true original, I feel certain that you have your own unsung hero.

The spouse who supports your goal. The friend who always has an ear to share victories, set backs andsometimes, all out fiascoes. The race director who strives for greatness and settles for no less.

Do you remember the last time you said, 'thank you?'

If not, be sure to get on it. If you just said it - say it again.

Life is short. Live it to the fullest, treasure what you have and give thanks.

Who is your 'Dolores?' Send your comments, stories, jpgs to [email protected] Heroes come ismany forms. Let's honor the champions among us.

Many thanks to all, whether I've made your acquaintance or not, who 'pay it forward.' It is theDolores's of the world who bring greatness to our sport.

============================================================Dolores Hensley, Michigan Runner Magazine's Contributor of the Year,1994============================================================Michigan Runner magazine has been recognizing contributors to our sport since Ron Gunn was namedin 1980. Dolores Hensley won the award for 1994; Harrison Hensley collected his in 2008. Wereproduce here Tom Henderson's profile of Dolores from the May 1995 issue of the Michigan Runner.

Dolores Hensley, the running community salutes you.

Though 19894 is the year we're honoring her for, there's not a year that goes by that you couldn't make

a good argument that no one around the statecontributes more to the sport.

Consider 1993, for instance. Harrison, one of theracingest people in the state-- his mileage during racesfor the year actually far surpasses his non-racingmileage-- ran in 102 races that year, from one end ofthe state to the other. Dolores volunteered at 101 ofthem. She tried to make it a perfect record, but at a racein Warren, her offers to volunteer were declined.

"I kept asking, but they had their own people and theylooked at me like I was crazy," recounts Dolores. "Igot so bored, I signed up and ran the mile to havesomething to do." She finished in 13 minutes, whichmight not seem too impressive until you find out sheran the darn thing in snowmobile boots.

Many runners and walkers stick to their area. Andthere are probably runners all over the state who aresure the Hensleys live nearby, because darned if Harrisonand Dolores aren't at all the local races. Take Flint, forexample, where the Riverbend Striders have a year-long race program and an active membership. Runtheir mid-week summer series, Dolores will be signing you up before hand, and taking your pull-pff tagsat the end of the chutes. Yep, you'd swear, she's from Flint.

Or run a race in Kalamazoo on one Sunday and another the following Sunday in Dowagiac. Sureenough, there's Dolores working both registrations and later at the end of the finish chutes. Yep, mustlive on the west side of the state.Actually, the Hensleys live in Pinckney, not far from the Hell Creek Ranch, where they put on thenotorious, wonderful Run Thru Hell each summer.

They don't confine their race activities to Michigan. Harrison has raced in 39 states, and Dolores hasvolunteered in all of them, including races in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska.

In a sport with far too many running widows and widowers-- where spouses and partners too oftendon't participate, in fact often can't stand the sport and are bored to tears by talk of PR's or workouts--Dolores says: "I think I like it better than Harrison does. Just being around everybody. If he don't go, Ifeel bad."

Which happened last fall. Harrison, one of the world's true bullheads, had run through an injury formost of the year, disdaining doctors and ignoring the pain. Finally, in September, he went to the doctor, and found out he had a muscle injury in the thigh that had, becaue of a lack of treatment or rest, evolved into an infection in the groin. Harrison still went to the occasional race to volunteer, but anoccasional race to a volunteer junkie is like an occasional fix to a heroin junkie.

"I missed it," Dolores admits. Luckily for her and for runners used to seeing her, Harrison got the goahead to resume training in February.

As if the volunteering wasn't enough-- at races where she can tell the organizers don't really know whatthey're doing, she'll take everything right over and in minutes have things ticking away like a fine Swisswatch piece-- by now Dolores seems to know the birthdays of half the people in the sport and routinelyshows up with birthday cakes. Or if she happens to overhear you say you like the peanut butter cookiesat some finish line, she's liable to have baked you a dozen peanut butter cookies the next time she seesyou. ===============================================================================Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - Venice, Liechtenstein, Zurich, London, New York (June 2 - June 20, 2011)===============================================================================Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports:

Part 1It's been a couple of weeks since I last updated everyone on my trip to Europe. Being on the road

and finding Internet access is difficult. It's not like The USA. June 2nd was Media Day at the USAexhibit Gloria for the Biennale International Art Show. Dan O'Brien, 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist inthe Decathlon, showed up and ran on the treadmill on the upside down tank. I got a quick interviewwith him and he was thrilled with being a part of this event. He's coaching at Arizona State Universityand providing commentary at major USA track meets. Lot's of press covered the USA exhibit and a lotof people from around the world made interesting comments about this exhibit. Art and the meaningbehind it is always in the eye and mind of the person viewing it. When the tank was turned on and wewould run on it, a huge crowd would come over and take lot's of pictures. It was a great experiencebeing a part of this for 12 days and I won't forget it.

The entire Biennale art show was fantastic. I'm not an art aficionado but all the exhibits were great intheir own way. Free speech and how the world is reacting to it is a major theme running through thisshow. There were a lot of video exhibits which was interesting to see since I do those all the time. WhenI was a kid art was sculptures and paintings. That has certainly changed. Over 80 countries participatedin this show. Germany won the Gold medal for best exhibit. USA won this event two years ago. Thefirst four days of the event were for the press and then it was opened to the public. The show runsthrough November. If you go to Venice do go see the Biennale Art Show.

Venice is phenomenal place to visit as it was built on the sea. No cars, just boats and walkingeverywhere. Walking all over the stone streets can make your legs strong. Water taxis are private andexpensive. The arperatos are the public boats that take the masses of people from place to place. Theworld's most famous bridge, The Rialto bridge, is there and it crosses the grand canal. Tourists wereeverywhere, everyday taking pictures as at least 4 cruise ships would come in, along with all the othertourists on local boats from the mainland, plus buses and trains coming into the city. It's a crowdedplace like no other. San Marco Church and Square is the central point of Venice, It's a fantastic sight, but when the wind blows the wrong way during a storm it gets flooded every time. Venice is a greatplace to visit, not for running but to to see what a unique place it is. Come to Venice for a different

P. 10 M I C H I G A N R U N N I N G N E W S - J U N E 2 3 , 2 0 1 1

experience.

The morning of June 10th I finally left Venice. I rented a car with a stick shift to drive to Vaduz,Liechtenstein, to run the Liechtenstein Alpine Marathon. Liechtenstein is a very small country in theAlps next to Switzerland, approximately 300 miles from Venice. Driving there was an adventure; driversget in the third lane and go over 100 miles an hour and don't slow down for anything. Driving throughItaly was through farmland, but at the Swiss border I was hit with a 40 Euro charge to drive on theirroads. This and tolls on Italian freeways made driving in Europe an expensive venture. The drivethrough Switzerland was fantastic. Seeing the Alps and tunnels that go forever through them becameunforgettable. I finally made it to Vaduz and had to ask around where the packet pickup was. Some onehad me follow them to the meat processing factory where they were giving out numbers. The meatprocessing manufacturer was called Malbuner.

I only got a number for registering and nothing else. You get a shirt and gift only if you finish the race. It's a different ball game running races in Europe. I find my hotel at a little village about 10k away upon the side of the mountain that had a fantastic view of the valley and mountains. I eat and get readyfor the race wondering what this race is going to be about.

This is Marathon Saturday and it's 5:30 am. I get a quick breakfast and drive up to the finish line atthe ski resort town of Malbun. Leave my car there and take the bus back to the meat processing factoryof Malbuner in Vaduz where the start is. I knew it was going to be a long day when I got up and I felt a

P. 11J U N E 2 3 , 2 0 1 1 - M I C H I G A N R U N N I N G N E W S

cold coming on and it was raining. I just thought to myself and I'm in Liechtenstein and it's going to beawesome scenery with lot's of adventure along the way. The gun goes off at 9 am and all 800marathoners, half marathoners, and 25k runners took off in the rain on an adventurous run through theAlpine slopes and mountains of Liechtenstein.

The first 10k was flat along the river and through the town of Vaduz. Then the climb started for thenext 11k up over 4000 feet of elevation. It was a brutal climb that turned into a hike, but it wasawesome at the same time. The scenery was great with trails and Alpine meadows. It was so cool whenan occasional villager would be handing out water or oranges. Even the cows would be along side of thetrail shaking their bells at you to keep you going. I even stopped to pet one on the head. I took my mindoff the pain of running uphill. There would be aid stations every 5k that would have oranges, water, energy drinks, bananas, cookies, and energy bars, so you really never went hungry. Finally, after the halfway point, we all got to start running down hill for the next 8k. The muddy alpine meadows become aslip-sliding-away trail as I ran down it. I had to shorten my stride so I didn't fall. Every now and then Iwould look over trail and see down into the valleys as the fog and rain was all over the place. In theAlpine Meadow areas farmers would be working in the fields because there's always work to be doneon a farm. At 31k we started going uphill again on just a single-track trail over an occasional streamthat was tough as hell to climb up. At 35k the trail crested at the top of the 6000 foot mountain, andthe rain quit, too. You could hear the announcer down at the base of the ski resort in Malbun, but itwas 7k away. At least it was downhill. It was up and down a little then the last 2k was completelydownhill so I felt like an 800 meter runner finishing up. When I crossed that finish line at the ski resort Ifelt like I Had climbed a mountain. Oh, I did climb a mountain! It was an adventure for five and a halfhours. I've done a lot of races over the years and this was one of those you never forget because of thechallenge, the scenery, the little country ofLiechtenstein and the volunteers who took so much pride in having people come from all over theworld to do their race. I got a really cool shirt for finishing and Swarovski ear phone plugs. Somethingdifferent for finishing a race other than a medal. If you want to do a really cool race and you're inEurope, come do this race and you will have an experience you won't forget.

On Sunday the sun came out and the view from the hotel balcony was fantastic. Church bellswoke me up at an early hour as they go off every hour-- something you don't hear back in the USA toooften. Here every village has a church tower with bells. The valley below and the snow-cappedmountain peaks above with everything being so green from all the rain made it a spectacular sight. Istrolled through the town of Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein-- just a quiet little town with picturesup from relief work that this country supports. I drove a little of the course to see what it looks like inthe sunshine and it was beautiful. Lots of multi purpose trails are well marked and go for miles. Thedownhill and cross country skiing here is great, too, but without the crowds or prices of the big-timeresorts in Europe. I've been to a lot of places and this really is a special place that I highly recommend.

I drove 70 miles to Zurich, Switzerland, a place I've always heard about and seen on TV. The citysits on Lake Zurich, a river divides the old town from the newer sections, and snow-capped peaks arevisible in the distance. It's a beautiful city. People strolled all over the city as it was alive and kicking ona Sunday night. I checked out the old buildings, the boats on the lake, and the occasional street bandplaying. I had dinner by the lake at one of the cafes looking out over the lake as the evening twilightcame. It was really cool to finally come to this city since I had dreamed about coming here for years. Iknow there's a big international track meet here every summer and a marathon, too. This would be agreat destination to come run a race. Of course, I think everywhere in Switzerland is beautiful.

P. 12 M I C H I G A N R U N N I N G N E W S - J U N E 2 3 , 2 0 1 1

Monday morning comes and I drive about 40 miles north of Zurich to the Rhine Falls. I drive throughGermany to get there and at the border crossing they just wave you through unless they see somethingthey don't like. There's a big park at the Falls and a huge crowd because this Monday was a nationalholiday in Switzerland. Most stores and bussines were closed. The Falls drop about 150 feet and therewere great viewing points on trails all around them. Boat rides that went right up to them. There waseven a train stop right there along with a youth hostel. What was great was all the hiking trails that goall over the place and are marked telling how long it will take to hike somewhere. i think you could run, hike or mountain bike all over the Alps which is really phenomenal.

Tuesday I started my long journey back to Venice. It turned out to be a little longer drive thanplanned since I took a wrong turn, had to take a detour around St Moritz and get off the freeway andfollow a couple of trucks through some mountainous roads. The scenery was great but you have to beon your toes every turn since I was driving a stick shift. I finally made it back to Venice after 7 and halfhours on the road and paying 23 euros on Italian freeways. I racked up 750 kilometers which is 450miles on the odometer. Luckily I had a small car and I really don't know how much gas I bought since Ijust put it on Visa. I'll find out when I get the statement. I think I paid between 6 and 8 dollars a gallonfor gas depending on what country I was in. Coming to Europe can be a very expensive adventure. Buthey, "Seize the moment." "Cape Diem."

Flew to London on a midnight flight and were met at the Gatwick airport by my travel companion'sbrother. By the time I got to their place I was cooked. The next morning, Wednesday, went sight seeingall over the city. Saw the tower of London, City Hall, Westminster Abbey, Parliament buildings,

Buckingham Palace, St James Park (where the Olympic marathon, race walks, and beach volley ball willbe held), Hyde Park, and Trafalgar Square where they have an Olympic countdown clock. As ofWednesday, there are 404 days until the opening ceremony. I can see Londoners are excited about theOlympics. Lot's of exciting things are happening this summer as Wimbledon is getting going now.

It's Thursday, it's raining and it's my last day in Europe. I was planning on visiting some more Olympicsites today but I'll see how the weather turns out. -- Still on the other side of the pond Gary Morgan

Part 2

My second day in London started out very wet as the rain came down heavily and I didn't thinkany outdoor sightseeing was going to happen. Low and behold noon came, the rain quit and the suncame out. I took the rail network (which includes the underground tube and above ground trains) to theOlympic Park area that is currently under construction. There's an area to watch the building of all ofthis with maps and observation view points. The Olympic Stadium is up as is the Aquatics Center. Theyboth look magnificent. I'll try to sound like a Brit when I'm in their country. The Olympic Park arealooks impressive and I'm sure the Brits will deliver a super Olympics next July.

I went to the British Museum and it was fantastic even though I was only there for about twohours. You could be there for two days and not see everything. What's great about some of theMuseums in London is that they are free but they do ask for a donation. The British Museum is a must-stop if you go to London. It was on the top 10 things to do in London; that's a great website forchecking out London. From there I went to Covenent Gardens, an old train station that's a collection ofrestaurants and tourist shops. Fun place to go. Had dinner and a couple of drinks and caught the tubeback to where I was staying. It was packed at 11pm with people going home because the trains quitrunning at midnight. This isn't how it works in New York or Chicago. I hope they plan on running thetrains later than that during the Olympics.

Friday morning I catch the train to Heathrow. My European adventure has come to an end. What an adventure and I won't forget it for some time to come. At least I'll know what to expect nextyear in London for the Olympics. The highlight of this trip was running the Alpine Marathon inLiechtenstein. I highly recommend that marathon for a truly unique experience. Good bye Europe andwelcome home to the USA as I catch my flight to Newark. Over the pond I go.

I land seven and a half hours later, go through customs, then catch a bus to New York City'sGrand Central Station. A friend picks me up there and he drives me out to Shelter Island, a place fewpeople know about but which is truly a unique spot. It's on the far north end of Long Island, 80 milesfrom New York City and it's an island within Long Island. It's a short 10 minute ferry ride to the island.I meet my New York Athletic Club friends, we have a late dinner and call it a night.

Saturday morning comes and I go register for the Shelter Island 10k. This is the 32nd running ofthis event and it's got a lot of history over the years. Many Olympians and elite runners have run here. It's one of the most scenic races I've ever as you run by bays, nice homes, parks and lot's of spectators. On this Island time goes a little slower.

The race started at 5:30 pm and Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit, John Sinclair, and Kim Jones are all

pacers in this race. That's really cool; some former elite runners are starting to pace races now. 1500runners ran the 10k and 5k. It was perfect 70 degree weather to run in and there was a great post racedinner and party at the Marina. I've done this race six times and I love doing it because it's such a coolevent. If you're ever out here in Long Island on the 3rd weekend in June try this race, you'll like it.

Sunday I go back to New York City and run a lap in Central Park; it was filled with peopleenjoying the summer weather and events in the park. I walked in the Conservancy Gardens and theywere beautiful-- another cool spot in Central Park. I finished my lap and called it a day.

Caught the train to JFK airport and the plane ride to DTW for my last leg of this trip that lastedover 3 weeks. I'm happy to be coming back to Michigan for a few days. It's great to travel but it'salways nice to come home. Summers here have fun, Gary Morgan

Steve’s Run - Fire Up!

Ron Gunn directs a very special running of the original Road andTrail Race. The start and finish will be in downtown Dowagiac, justas in the original Road and Trail races that were so popular. This

year’s race will be in conjunction with the Dowagiac Summer Fun Festand the venue will include the Dowagiac Street Scape part of the beautifulVictorian restoration of downtown Dowagiac. The races will be run in thememory of Steven Briegel, an SMC honors graduate who died of cancerafter a very courageous and determined fight.

Course presents a lot of variety to the runner and walker, including agolf course, a wildlife refuge, forest trails, quiet country roads andeven a cemetery. The more challenging 10K course winds through

Southwestern Michigan College and the racers have the option of hurdlinghay bales and an authentic Irish stone fence. There are numerous musicstations en route to fire up the runners and walkers. And once again, anexciting finish is planned in the park with good and plentiful refreshments, great music and lots of “good times” for everyone. We’re adding by popu-lar request: 70-74, 75-79, 80+ age groups.

Awards: Beautiful custom-designed T-shirts to all finishers in the 10Kand 5K races... Distinctive custom-stained glass awards to over200 finishers in the 10K and 5K (including the walk) based on a

participation formula...Special awards in many team and individual cate-gories to open male, open female, master male, master female, agegroup winner, and special team winners (father/ son, mother/daughter,etc)...Traveling trophy to corporate team winner...Special certifi-cates to largest family, oldest finisher, youngest finishers, traveled the far-thest, etc...Special drawing prizes and discount certificates. This year allparticipants who are cancer survivors will wear a special tee-shirt.
