Ilovebas-ket-ball. Toobad itdoes notlove me. Irolled myleft ankleplaying re-cently.Thats mygoodankle.

Why keep playing if youre just going to hurtyourself? my wife asked.

Why keep living if youre just going to die? Isaid.

Why do you always answer me with a ques-tion?

The crutches were still on the porch from lasttime. I used them to go get x-rays. While waiting Igot an email on my laptop: Nothings hotter than aguy who can dunk, it said.

I heard this while leaving my gym, wroteDaniel Hawkin, whom Id never met but seemed toknow all about me. Two girls were watching a 3-on-3 basketball game which abruptly ended whenthe biggest guy jumped, knocked the defender flaton his a** and dunked on him while he was layingsprawled on the blacktop.

What kind of gym has a blacktop floor? I won-dered. But I kept reading.

Thats when the blonde cheekily whisperedthis confession to her smoking-hot Asian friend inpink sweatpants: Nothings hotter than a guy whocan dunk. Uh huhhh! the Asian hottie whim-

I could dunk through my 30s, back when I hadto be fit to avoid the dinosaurs. All thats left arememories. In college friends and I would play hoopsat a nearby playground, where Mimi M. watched, adding to my incentive to jam (and frequency thechain nets ripped my fingers).

I dunked during one game when the guy cover-ing me was a junkie. He didnt sprawl on his a** onthe asphalt, just freaked out and could not continue.

My dunking ended when I took up running.Nothing like pounding 50 miles a week horizontallyto trash leg muscles used to spring vertically. Turn-ing 40, 50 and 60 were also factors.

Daniels letter reminded me of all I have givenup. OK, not really. Mimi and I stayed platonicfriends, to my chagrin. Cheeky blondes and smok-ing-hot Asians whimpering Uh huhhh! were hardto come by.

I married a woman who shared my later-in-lifelove for running. Shes still going even though Imnot, thanks to what pounding too many miles over-did to my right ankle. Basketball, played at a loweraltitude, once more beckons.

My hopes to re-find my hops and take onelast crack at those hotties seemed kaput till I readDaniels email further.

Breakthrough research, he wrote, has sur-faced about the exact levers which allow people tojump ridiculously high. Now the worlds highest(vertically, I assumed) dunker is selling a bada** pro-gram that can transform regular guys who cant eventouch the rim into dudes who can dunk with twohands every time with ease.

Fountain of youth, here I come! Mimi may be agrandma now, but look out Asians sizzling in pinksweatpants!

With both ankles crippled, I am finally bal-anced and signing up for this bada** program. In notime Ill be jumping higher and so hot no one willtouch me. (Wait ... was that my problem in collegetoo?)

What you need, said my wife when I told hermy latest strategy, is to stop treating symptoms anddeal with causes.

    Like what?

How you sprained your brain, she said.
