The geometry of innocentflesh on the boneCauses Galileo’s math bookto get thrownAt Delilah who’s sittingworthlessly aloneBut the tears on her cheeksare from laughter.– from “Tombstone Blues,”by Bob Dylan

X-rays are previewsof when we turninto ghosts. I have

had my share lately: of my left wrist after breaking it play-ing basketball, now of my right ankle after decades of dis-tance running.

The image is breathtaking: knobby talus bones, fit precisely to hinge and rotate, flaring down intometatarsals of the upper foot and phalanges. “If youcan call something in me religious,” said Albert Ein-stein, “it is the unbounded admiration for the struc-ture of the world so far as science can reveal it.”

The glowing negative shows a marvelous mecha-nism that — compared to my left foot, next to it —seems comically misaligned.

Givens are two flat feet and a right-foot bunion.Add God knows how many miles of running, basket-ball, walking and restless pacing between every sen-tence. Write sitting down? Not me.

I first noticed arthritis years ago. So what? Lotsof runners have it. When my race times grew slowerfaster than other runners my age, I trained harder, ranmore miles and tried lighter shoes ... every sidestep Icould think of.

For every action there is an equal and oppositereaction. My right heel landed farther outside wheremy weight came down, shifting lower-leg shock frommy tibia to the slender, more-fragile fibula. Whenyour right foot lands caddywhompus, your left foot

compensates. Degeneration is exponential.

Then there’s the mental part. “I am not Type A,”I told myself, quitting racing and teasing friends whokept on that now I get paid to cover events as a jour-nalist, saving entry fees, pain and striving. Somethingliving had been cut out of me.

Compensatory happiness came from putzingaround the neighborhood with my dog. I’d jog hardenough to breathe deeply and feel my heart pound, then stop to let him drink out of streams and passing-by children pet him. He’s dumb as a rock, but his joyin each moment makes him a Buddha.

At last the pain hit a tipping point. Time tomove inside to a Nordic machine, see a specialist. Heconfirmed what I’d long suspected and proposedmeans we might address it.

Shy of radical foot reconstruction, and maybenot running again, we’ll try customized inserts inmore-stable shoes, plus an ankle brace to forestall self-inflicted damage. Less pain would be a bonus — aswould a skinnier dog and me.

Now I wish I could write you a melody so plainThat could hold you dear lady from going insaneThat could ease you and cool you and cease the painOf your useless and pointless knowledge. - Ibid

There’s no use thinking I’d trade the dumbthings I’ve done. For what? Something dumber? I hada blast doing them — and I still am.

What’s left of my ghost body can be salvaged. Ican type letters other than “A” — an alphabet waits ofdiscovery, and, when that’s finished, numbers, colors…

The dog wags his tail as if thinking each momentpromises miracles and the best way to bless our mem-ories is to not look back, but ahead.

DETROIT (3/10/13) — Repeat champ Mike An-derson and first-year entrant Dayna Pidhoreskycruised to titles at the 31st annual St. Patrick’s Pa-rade Corktown 5K.

The event, presented by the Fraternal Order ofUnited Irishman and sponsored by AmbassadorBridge, looked like a river of green to viewers. Arecord field of close to 10,000 participants, mostwearing bright Corktown shirts or green costumes, streamed up and down Michigan Avenue.

“The crowds were amazing,” said Pidhoresky,26, of Tecumseh, Ontario. “I’ve never seen anythinglike this before.”

Pidhoresky, the 2010 and 2011 Detroit FreePress/Talmer Bank Half Marathon women’s champ, hoped to get in a speed workout at Corktown beforetackling longer distances this season.

“It was good,” she said of the 5K. “It was windyout there, but I ran about what I thought I wouldbased on my training, which isn’t really geared to-ward that distance.”

Pidhoresky finished in 16:35, well ahead of An-drea Karl, 28, of East China (17:57) and SusanSavasky, 24, of Berkley (19:11). Janet Harden, 40, ofLake Orion won the masters title in 20:55, while EllaWillis, 58, of Detroit led the grand masters in 22:07.

“It was hard to run that fast,” said Pidhoresky, whose 5K PR is 16:12. “My next race is a 30K(Around the Bay in Hamilton, Ontario) and this is amental tune-up. I’ve never done a marathon, but Ihope to do one this fall.”

Andersen, 26, of Milford also used the race as atune-up. “I’m training for the Boston Marathon, sothis was just for fun,” he said.

Andersen’s 15:13 was 10 seconds slower thanhis winning time last year. “The wind on the wayback was brutal,” he said.

Next came Jeff Gardner, 52, of Troy in 15:25 andJohn Trojansek, 42, of Windsor, Ontario, in 15:28.

“It was windy, with people to chase and all overthe place,” Trojansek said.

With Gardner and Trojansek taking second andthird overall, Paul Aufdemberge, 48, of Redford wasawarded top masters honors in 16:37. Tom Yates,51, of New Boston captured the grand masters titlein 17:38.

Race director Doug Kurtis said everything wentsmoothly, despite the turnout.

“We’ve added locations for pre-race packet pick-ups,” he said. “Eighty-five percent of our people pickedup their stuff (bib numbers and t-shirts) ahead of time, which made things a lot easier on race day.”

The Corktown Parade, which took place afterthe race, celebrated its 55th year and honored thelife of West Bloomfield police officer PatrickO’Rourke, who was killed last year.

Trivia: Who were thewomen’s and men’s 2012

London Olympicsmarathon gold medal

winners?

My path to therace announc-ing I’ve done

for the past 30-plus yearswas preceded by experi-ences as a high school, college and open runner, high school and collegecoach and director for alarge race.

I started running in the late 1960s before it be-came “cool” in the mid -’70s and tracked its explo-sion in popularity at local events and throughpublications into the early ‘80s.

As with many, I got caught up in developmentsthat piggybacked on the growing numbers, such as(much) better equipment, dissemination of trainingadvice and specialty running stores. Also by the early’80s, the modest number of races a decade earlierhad grown as new runners saw races less as an event“for the fast” and more as a personal challenge.

The best thing to happen to running was whenopportunities to compete became open to highschool girls in the mid-’70s. It’s mind-bending nowto consider the reasons why girls were long treated assecond-class citizens!

I watched, participated in and abetted many of thecool things happening in the day. Looking back, I can seehow each thing I did was influenced by a prior encounteror experience. One thing led to another and I was luckyto be in the right place at the right time.

For the first 18 years, my announcing was all atroad races. Over the past dozen years I’ve added highschool and college cross-country and track meets. I’dlike to share some of my top memories.

First gig: the day before the ’82 Crim 10-mile, Iwas asked if I might like to help Bobby Crim spotrunners for announcing purposes at the finish, sinceI wasn’t running. I agreed and on race day climbed aladder to sit on a mid-block store awning to joinBobby near the finish line. He chattered as runnersfinished and I supplied him with names. After 10minutes of this set-up, Bobby handed me the micand said, “You know all the runners, you announce.”I was invited back and this August will be my 32ndyear commenting on the thousands finishing on theSaginaw Street bricks.

My favorite is emceeing the Lower Peninsulahigh school cross country finals at Michigan Inter-national Speedway every fall. My son Jeff and hisAnn Arbor Pioneer team qualified in 2001 and heran about as well as a first-year sophomore could beexpected. By his senior year Jeff was in terrific shape,as was the Pioneer team.

Spectating at MIS is difficult, so I chose towatch him during the first two miles of the 5K raceand track his progress around the north end of thefinishing infield grass at a distance.

He was in 18th place (top 30 make all-state)when he went past me at two-plus miles. I watchedas he picked off runners one by one around the longbend and slowly walked back toward the announc-ing area. About 20 minutes later I saw the resultsand he had moved up to 11th place. Later Jeff toldme he wanted the top 10, but got out-kicked. Theawards ceremonies for the four-race afternoon ses-sion took place two hours later.

I introduce the top-30 runners in reverse orderand my heart was pounding as I neared 11th place, notsure what to say. I mentioned the next boy was my son— and after Jeff walked up the stairs and got his medal,I gave him a hug. I learned later that spectators voicedapproval. That’s as cool as it gets for me.

Late-Breaking News. The latest in “BadThings that Happen to Scott” occurred March 5while I was cycling in a bike lane next to GrangeHall Road between Fenton and Holly. I was on astraight stretch, thinking about heading into nearby

Seven Lakes State Park, when ...

Next I remember, I was looking up at the sky, wondering why I was on the ground. An ambulancecrew explained I’d been hit by the side-view mirrorof a mini van.

Since I was on a blood thinner for a blood clot, Iwas taken to Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc. Onlythe back of my left arm, where I was hit, was sore. Thetrauma area staff quickly learned what I knew: I wasOK. I was given a CAT scan to check for head damageand kept overnight for observation. The scan only re-vealed only how badly my collar bone, hurt in a May2011 bike race crash, had been broken. The Genesysstaff was terrific; the food was bad.

I picked up my helmet and bike March 7 froma local fire station. One of the responders who’dhelped me was there. An eyewitness had told her I’dlanded near the middle of the road on my back, satup and scooted off to the roadside.

“I don’t recall any of that,” I told her. “How didyou know my name and where I lived?”

“You answered our questions at the time,” shesaid.

“I don’t remember that either.”

“It looks like you’re getting a part of your life back,”she said.

Banging my helmet against the pavement haderased my memory for eight to 10 minutes. Yes, thedriver who’d hit me stopped. When quizzed by po-lice on the scene, he lied about how it all happened, saying I was in the roadway.

I’ve been up and down that busy road hundredsof times and have no “death wish” to mingle withtraffic going 50 mph. I like bike lanes and that’swhere I was when hit. I was wearing a loud yellowjacket, doing all I could to be safe.

I share this to once again emphasize if you ridea bike, please wear a helmet — if not for yourself, for others who care about you. Plus ride far rightand follow all traffic laws. Bikes have as much rightto the road as cars, which too many drivers seem toignore and/or be oblivious to.

Insurance is taking care of my costs (crackedhelmet, medical, etc.) and I’m still wondering how Idodged worse damage. The back of my left arm hasa lovely purple/black bruise. The left side of myhead where my helmet met pavement was tender forfive days. Otherwise, I’m physically OK and back inthe saddle, a bit self-concious of traffic behind me.Great to (still) be here!

Answer: Tiki Gelana of Ethiopia won for the women inan Olympic record 2:23:07 and Stephen Kiprotich of

Uganda claimed the men’s gold in 2:08:01.

GRANDVILLE (2/16/13) — Former MichiganRunners of the Year Nick Stanko and Kris Kosterdidn’t fear getting lost at the fore of the Winter Blast5K field.

The course — on flat, residential streets behindrace sponsor Calvin Christian High School — was soassaulted with salt beforehand that falling snow had nochance of sticking. Plows had also scraped side roads, but not made them sodium-bare and black.

Stanko, MR’s 2005 and 2010 Runner of theYear, and Koster, 2011 Men’s Co-Runner of the Year, spread heat from the start in this first event ofMichigan Runner magazine’s 2013 Race Series. Thetwo former college stars — Stanko at the Universityof Michigan, Koster at Calvin College — sizzledthrough the snow to a photo finish. Asked whiledoing a cool-down together afterward who had won, neither knew.

“We ran through a door inside to a dark gym-nasium, then, boom, we were done,” said Stanko.

“Nick closed stronger. I think he got me,”Koster said.

The clock showed Koster, winner in each of theWinter Blast’s first three runnings, was accurate.Stanko, 32, crossed in 15:40.0; Koster, 31, in 15:40.7.

Calvin Christian, whose boys cross countryteam finished third in the Division 3 state meet lastfall, was well represented behind the leaders. All-state seniors Zac Nowicki (15:59.7) and Andrew Ry-laarsdam (16:25.1) placed third and fourth. Nextcame junior Logan Jurgens (16:50.7).

Calvin’s girls, sec-ond in the state just fourpoints behind JacksonLumen Christi, faredeven better, with seniorAshley Jourdan(20:00.0) nipping soph-omore Emma Doorn(20:07.0) for thewomen’s title.

“I’m pleased withthe way our teammembers ran,” saidrace director and CCcoach LaurensTenKate. “I can seewho’s been training inthe off-season. We’llhave most of our topgirls back next fall, while some of ouryounger guys will havenew opportunities.”

Old-timers hadtheir day in the sun ...OK, snow, as well. BrianFahey, 44, nipped JDPepper, 49, for the men’smasters crown, 18:00.4to 18:01.1. Steve Hulst,56, (19:12.7) toppedDan Kersjes, 51,(20:19.7) for grand mas-ters honors.

Gayle Kuipers, 47, (21:01.3) bested DarlaBrown, 49, (24:24.4) among masters women.Wanda Hanlin, 56, (22:30.9) paced the grandmasters, followed by Nancy Curry, 51, (24:42.7).Valentine’s roses were handed to each woman finisher.

Harold Plasier and Rob Smith faced a thornierdilemma as the only two in the oldest race group.

“Rod and I have strategy,” said Plaisier, 79.

“We outlive our competitors,” Smith, 76,chipped in.

PLYMOUTH (3/17/13) — Despite a windsweptday with temperatures in the 20s and fresh snow onthe ground, St. Patrick’s Day brought runners out indroves to the ShamRock ‘n’ Roll Run. Race directorAlan Whitehead of Kona Running Co. reported arecord 4,200 runners (up from 3,100 last year) forall three races. The festive holiday saw many tutu-at-tired runners — and even a few dogs — serenadedby an Irish band at the finish line.

In the 10K, veteran Clint Verran of Lake Orion(31:51) held off a challenge from Jeff Bord, 19, ofPlymouth (31:56) in his debut 10K.

Verran said Bord was “5:00 flat at the mile andby two miles he had about 30 seconds on this pack.I was in with about five or six other guys. It didn’t

look like we were going to catch him, so I took offon my own and ran a 4:56 third mile.

“I finally caught him with about 2-1/2 miles togo,” Verran continued. “Then I used him and some ofthe wind to give me a kick with 500 meters to go.”

Since this was his first 10K, “I wasn’t sure how Iwas going to go out,” Bord said. “Clint really helpedme keep the pace in the second half.”

Jenni Culbertson of Northville (41:22) was thewomen’s 10K winner, but admitted, “I didn’t knowI was in first. I thought I was in second the entiretime. I kept trying to find the next girl, but neverfound her. “

In a hotly-contested5K, Josh Partridge ofBrighton edged MattFecht of Warren. Bothfinished with times of16:32 and six secondsseparated the first fourrunners.

The finish was “inter-esting, to say the least,”said Partridge. “Mattand I and a couple otherguys had run the entirerace together until thelast half-mile.

“As we were ap-proaching the finish, itwas very congested with10K finishers,” he con-tinued. “A race volunteerwas in the middle of theroad trying to direct10K and 5K finishers toalternate sides.

“Matt and I wereright next to each otheras we turned the cornerto the finish, about 50meters away, and I ranright into the volunteerwhile Matt went on tofinish. Fortunately I hadstarted a couple secondsback at the start of therace, and while Matt fin-ished ahead of me, I hada faster chip time.”

Fecht also took third in the 10K. Also pullingdouble duty was Jay Steele of Plymouth, who wasthe male masters winner in both the 5K (17:54) and10K (35:54).

Due to the crowded course, women’s 5K andmasters winner Kathleen McGowan of Fenton(22:00) had no idea she had barely beaten ErinDesmond of Huntington Woods (22:02), but tookit in stride. “It’s kind of neat running with the 10Kpeople,” McGowan said. “I didn’t know I was lead-ing so, it’s kind of nice not knowing.”

Shamik Ganguly of Plymouth won the 1-milein 5:59 with little competition. Jessica Hughes ofCanton, 12, was the first female and third overall in7:36.

Iremember coveringmy stomach withmy arms, embar-

rassed to be the only girlat Houseman Field inGrand Rapids wearing asports bra. I don’t thinkthey even had sports brasthis small then, but mymom’s had shrunk in thewash.

What had given mejoy and a sense of matu-

rity days before now made me uneasy as I felt staresfrom the other kids around me. I hugged my thinbody, feeling as if my stomach was the center of at-tention thanks to this purple-, blue- and white-striped bikini top.

But the moment I toed the line and saw thestretch of a red, rubber track before me, my arms fellto my sides, tense and poised. When I dashed fromthe start the arms that protected my stomach coulddance in the wind, break out in rhythm to my run-ning song. I could pull my body out of the turtleshell, allow myself to breathe and flow with the soft, gentle curve of the Houseman track.

I could run.

My mom’s words flowed through my mind as Ifocused on the competitors ahead: “Hold back atfirst. Pace yourself. Be patient until you are ready tosprint into the finish.” I started slowly, as she hadtold me, staying well behind my competitors, all ofwhom raced to the front to win in the first 100 me-ters. I knew an entire lap of a 400-meter track was alot to cover.

About 30 seconds after the race began I slowlymoved up among a pack of kids who swung theirarms wildly, their legs straining with fatigue. With-

out changing speed I passed the young boysa foot shorter than me and the tall girls ayear or two older. That silly girl with thesports bra passed them with ease andmounting excitement.

I rounded the final curve on thatwarm summer evening and could almosthear my mom urge, “Now you can go!” asI dashed toward the finish with 100 me-ters left.

My arms swung back, hooking the airin large sweeps. My long, spindly legswidened with every stride and my faceheld onto its calmness. My thoughts fo-cused on the finish ahead where my momstood, holding a stopwatch in her righthand, screaming “Go Rachael!” The big, clunky shoes I wore were heavy, but mybody was light, my loose hair free in thewind I created for myself.

I would become the greatest runner inthe world. I knew it in my heart and mysoul.

That seven-year-old who rounded theHouseman Field track in the early ‘90swould find herself there again more than adecade later. That little girl would raceagain as a college athlete who never losther love for a sport; a sport that could lether unravel the arms that held onto herself-conscious body, that could let her hairripple in the wind, that could release asmile no matter what place she came in.

She would go on to race with a furyand passion at Houseman field — nowher home track as college athlete 12 yearslater.

It’s fun to reminisce about races you ran that nolonger exist. Some ceased for good reasons, likethe race director moved away or the course is no

longer available or a sponsor went out of business. Then there are those that ceased to exist because offatal flaws in concept or commission.

In my hometown of Lapeer, near Flint, 1986saw the inaugural “Run Through the Lapeer StateHome.” But when they lost a runner that first yearand three more the next, it doomed the race. Theydid eventually find them — seems no one had in-formed the security guards of the race, and theythought residents were “escaping” and ushered themback to their dorms. The food was so good and thestaff was so encouraging, the lost runners never ob-jected until the FBI got involved. But it’s hard toconduct a race with federal oversight, and that onefittingly died out.

A similar, though opposite, problem occurredin Bad Axe when someone hatched the creative ideato run a 5K through the Thumb Regional Correc-tional Facility. How they got a permit for this I don’tknow, but just after the mile mark runners passedthrough the barbed-wire gates. Prisoners whoopedand high-fived the runners, but race directors foundthey had 12 more finishers than entrants, and all

seemed to be men wearing bright orange full-bodyoutfits — unusual gear for a mid-July race, which, not surprisingly, was only run that one year.

Some races will bill themselves as a “tune ups”for some other big upcoming race. In Grand Rapidsthere’s a fairly popular 25K the end of each May, sosomeone created a tune-up the week before.

Tune-up races are always shorter than the bigrace, so this one was only 24K (14.9 miles, a fairlyuncommon race distance). They wanted it to startand finish at the same downtown plaza as the bigrace, so the course was just 32 laps around the sameconcrete city block, which required 128 right turnsby runners. This race needed to die and it did.

A similar attempt was made with the Crim inFlint, though on the exact same Saturday in late Au-gust. Whereas the Crim takes you through some ofthe nicest neighborhoods in Flint, “The Grim,” as itwas called, took you through 10 miles of the worst,most-dilapidated neighborhoods. (The nameseemed to have been devised to deliberately deceivepeople, and quite a few did mistakenly sign up forthe race, not discovering their mistake until theyshowed up on race day morning at the abandonedwarehouse where the race began. The course did

offer an education, running down alleys andthrough not one but two abandoned houses.

The event was cancelled after only three years, butdirectors never told anyone, so I and quite a few othersshowed up and ran a fourth year, not noticing any dif-ference. It never was a very well-organized race.

You’ve probably heard of the race in Cadillacthat died not for lack of quality but simply an un-fortunate race name. The fundraiser for the CadillacRace for Alzheimer’s Project was called the “Run forC.R.A.P.” I know, right? As I exited my car on racemorning I heard a large woman exclaim, “I’ve doneall the C.R.A.P. runs!”

It was a pretty enough course, except the partthat ran by the city sewage plant. And they neverseemed to have enough porta-johns at the start/fin-ish. The year after they served spoiled fruit at thepost-race spread and 122 runners were stricken withbotulism, the race met its unfortunate end.

So most great races continue, some good racesregretfully end, and then there are those few racesthat die just because they needed to.

Races That No Longer Exist – For Good ReasonBy Dean Johnson

Page 20: Michigan Runner, May / June 2013

20 Michigan Runner - May / June 2013 | michiganrunner.tv

I’ve about had it up to my Cool Max hat. Every-where I turn there’s another training programdesigned to help one easily complete a

marathon. Standing. In one piece. Coherent.

It’s not fair to us veteran marathoners whoserunning history began with not only hitting the leg-endary wall but also becoming encased in it andstaggering to the finish with demented half-grins.

When we began running marathons, the con-cepts of lactate threshold training, VO2max, heart rate monitors etc. weren’taround. We were the naïve souls of the pre-energy gel era. The running relics. Weproudly wore the battle scars earned fromrunning the last 10 miles of the marathonwith mind-altering glycogen depletion pro-ducing a lovely hallucinogenic state. Thatwas a true runner’s high!

We over-trained, inadequately taperedand didn’t drink or eat properly. Throughsheer ignorance we carefully and confidentlyviolated every present-day cardinal rule ofproper race preparation and marathon run-ning. We went bonk big time but just as-sumed that was part of the process.Delirious was our middle name.

I’m tired of watching people cross thefinish line with a big smile - having doneeverything correctly from training to pacingto fueling. They don’t appropriately displaymy initial marathon look of having had atryst with a fast-moving steamroller whilepulling an enormous tank stuck in deepquicksand. No, they look tired but not ex-hausted, thirsty but not dehydrated, slightlysore but not slithering on spaghetti legs.

It’s just not fair! Where’s the delirium? The unfathomable fatigue? This isn’t right.

We more-seasoned runners need tostick together. We must generously give newmarathoners the opportunity to experiencethe lovely agony we encountered. The com-plete enervation, the nausea, the cramps, the crater-size blisters. We came, we ran, we withered!

Nietzsche wrote, “That which does not kill usmakes us stronger.” We’ll help them get strongerthan ever if they’ll follow our veteran words of ad-vice:

Taper Schmaper - Taper? You’ve got to be kid-ding. You want to lose that finely-tuned condition-ing you worked so hard for? That rapid leg turnover? You’re a virtual running machine. Cut back? Noway. Keep that consistent training going right upuntil a day before the race and to gain that psycho-logical edge that you can go the distance. It’s a greatidea to do your last long run a few days before themarathon. This just reinforces that you’ve got what

it takes. Don’t worry about “dead legs” come raceday, as adrenaline and fan support will overcomethat completely.

Speedy Start - The key to a successful start is toplace yourself as near to the front as possible. Youwant to get caught up in the faster pace of the eliterunners and make certain you eclipse your plannedpace per mile by a minute or so in those first fewmiles. This way you’ll already be well ahead of yourgoal target and the mental boost you’ll receive is im-

measurable. Don’t even think about negative splits.Just get as far ahead of your target time as quick asyou can and the stimulus of the race will keep yougoing the rest of they way. Take advantage of all thatpent-up energy in the first half of the race. Go! Go!Go!

Bathroom Discipline – Let’s talk anatomy. You drink fluids; you eventually have to expel. Doyou want to have to waste time stopping for a port-a-potty at mile 18? I think not. The best way toavoid this is to forego all fluid offered at the variousaid stations. Additionally, you won’t lose those valu-able seconds by slowing down to grab a drink. Rec-ognize that if you’re really thirsty they’ll be plenty offluids available at the finish line. That also works as

extra incentive to get going, as unquenched thirst isa great motivator.

Coffee Combustion - Give yourself a great bigkick-start. If you’re a regular coffee drinker. quintu-ple your normal intake. If you’re new to the caffeineconnection, then three cups will do you fine. Don’tworry about upsetting your stomach, or its diureticeffects as that’s a small trade off for a good openingmile time.

Try Something Exciting –You’ve worked hard preparing for themarathon and should reward yourselfwith something new and special for therace. The best thing would be a brandnew pair of shoes, or try a differentmake of socks or even a new breakfastcereal. Maybe Fiber Flakes or BranBuds. Mix things up a little for the bigday.

Uphill, Downhill – Attack hillsvigorously. Get into oxygen debt. Try tolengthen that stride and sprint up themas fast as possible, then jog leisurely onthe downhill while putting on the breakpedals. This way you’ll get the hill outof the way faster and be able to enjoythe slow pace on the backside while ex-changing high fives with the spectators.

GU Riddance - Do you think FrankShorter won a gold medal downing en-ergy gels over the last 10 miles? Theonly goo Frank was familiar with in the1970s was Shoe Goo, which youwouldn’t want to ingest. Don’t rely on ashot of strawberry banana flavored pud-ding-like food to get you through thesudden lightheaded feeling at mile 20.Just close your eyes and plow ahead. Bea trooper.

Post-Run Recovery - Once youcross that finish line you deserve to laydown. Don’t expend any further energy

and stop the strain train right there. Just take a seatand let those lactic acid pools build right up in yourlegs where they belong. You may be more sore to-morrow but let’s just think about today.

If new marathoners would only adhere to theabove Rules to Run By, they’d bring a depraved littlesmile to the face of some old-time marathoners.Heh, heh, heh!

“Hansons Marathon Method: A Renegade Path to YourFastest Marathon” by Luke Humphrey with Keith andKevin Hanson. 2012. 242 pp. $18.95 paper. Velopress.

This spring, with many runners, veterans andnovices alike set to begin marathon trainingfor a fall race, Luke Humphrey’s “Hansons

Marathon Method” is worth a long look.

Humphrey is the founder and head coach of theHansons Coaching Service. He holds degrees in ex-ercise science and has a marathon PR of 2:14:39 —

training with the Hansons Marathon Method. TheHansons, brothers Keith and Kevin, began the suc-cessful Hansons-Brooks Distance Project which hasproduced other elite marathoners such as DesireeDavila, Brian Sell and Clint Verran.

Don’t be fright-ened by the reference to elites. This “renegade path”also can be and has been used by runners tackling

their first marathons as well as mid-packers seekingto improve their times.

Central to any marathon plan is the long run.The Hansons Method’s longest training distance formost runners is 16 miles, unconventional inmarathon circles. But that doesn’t mean this is ashortcut to marathon success — hardly. AsHumphrey notes, this isn’t “training to run, walk ordrag yourself across the finish line. (It’s more than)just looking to finish.” Rather, it will prepare run-ners “to execute the marathon distance successfully.”

The Hansons Methodis “balanced training,”relying on a fairly-stan-dard regimen of longruns, tempo runs andruns designed forstrength and speed. These are called “SOS—Something of Sub-stance” workouts.Mixed in are easy runs, also key components ofthe program. Eachworkout has a specificpurpose. Crucial is run-ning these workouts atthe proper designatedpace and volume; run-ning at unintendedpaces and/or greaterdistances fouls up theplan.

That’s because themethod relies on whatHumphrey calls “cumu-lative fatigue,” the dif-ferentiating factor inthe Hansons Method. For instance, the typicallong run is not greaterthan 16 miles, whilemost other marathonprograms call for 20 ormore miles. The shorterdistance, though, comeswith “a hitch. (It)should simulate the last16 miles of themarathon, not the first16.” Humphrey goes onto add, “A training plan

should simulate the cumulative fatigue that’s experi-enced during a marathon, without completely zap-ping your legs.” That’s why runners must adhere toproper pace and distance for each workout, espe-cially the easy runs.

The book is well written, lively and easy to fol-low. Humphrey’s explanations of the science behind

the training is interesting — clear and concise, someof the best I have read on the subject. There aregood lessons on physiology, for instance, the benefitsof the easy runs.

He also covers the non-running aspects of suc-cessful training for and running the marathon. In-cluded are nutrition and what foods are important.

“Carbo loading doesn’t mean having four platesof spaghetti and three loaves of bread.” He discusseshydration and equipment, adding information andthoughts on the latest trends such as hyponatremia,compression-based socks and minimalist shoes.

The charts, graphs and checklists are easy toread. There are examples of “Elite Program Work-outs” and, recognizing that not every runner can fol-low the conventional schedule, a nine-day trainingcycle.

The Hansons Marathon Method has led to suc-cess for many runners of a wide variety of abilitiesand goals. In fact, I haven’t run a marathon in abouta dozen years. Yet, after reading this book, I foundmyself telling a running buddy, “You know, maybeit’s time ...”

Kids sprint. Theydon’t run. Theydash across the

street, chase after some-one, flee frantically froma pursuer or bolt acrossthe yard to kick a ball.

That’s how it waswith me. As a kid I ranall the time and when Igot out of breath, Istopped. But since mostof my destinations werewithin 100 yards ofwhere I started, that wasno problem.

At Alger Elementary School, I was the second-fastest in the sixth grade. But in sixth grade the win-ner is the hero and second is just one of the rest. SoRichard Vail’s win got the girls’ attention and I wasjust another kid.

Three years later I joined the Burton JuniorHigh Track Team, where the longest race was the110-yard leg of the 440 relay. I ran my fastest in thetime trials and the next day I was the team manager.

In 1994 I became the coach of the CadillacMiddle School Track Team. When we had tracksignup, students flocked to my room. With visionsof blazing to victory down an eight-lane track, 120or so hopefuls showed up for the first day of prac-tice. We had them sprint, high jump, long jump, pole vault and put the shot. To them, track practiceseemed like recess for big kids.

Only the coaches and a few kids, most of whom hadolder siblings on the high school cross-country team, seemed excited about those events that involved runningmore than one lap around the track. About 95 percent ofthe kids saw themselves as natural-born speedsters. Welearned that the first year.

The next year at the first track practice, I gavethe participants a somewhat-impassioned speech, laced with a little hyperbole and lots of enthusiasm, about the joys of distance running. Yes, I explained, you would be in pain in practice and might feelworse in meets, but in distance running determina-tion and hard work trumped talent. The natural ath-lete wouldn’t automatically be the star. A group ofathletic unknowns, 40 percent of the track team, suddenly decided to become distance runners.

The first day we all run an out-and-back two-miler. This was a reality check. I counted down, yelled, “Let’s go!” and we broke from the startingline. Some raced out ahead while others trotted ten-tatively, not knowing if they could go the whole waywithout walking.

I saw some of the leaders struggling, wanting toslow to a jog yet determined to stay in front.

Gamely they pushed on, an especially-dauntingtask since this may have been the first time they’dgone this far. They hadn’t a clue how they’d feel fiveminutes from now or at the finish.

Would those aching legs feel even worse? Thedull ache in the head, the gasping for air and thatawful wet goo taste in the mouth — they felt horri-ble.

I watched some give in and slow down; otherslooked over their shoulders at those coming up tothem and continued to run, arms now flailing a bitand their torsos going go side to side.

As the first finished and grabbed his side, I gavehim a cheer and then turned back to find the others. Some were walking, the rest running at whateverlevel of fatigue they chose to tolerate.

After it was over we stretched and talked. Theywere amazed how well they felt. Sure their legs weretired, but they felt happy and proud.

The next night a few drifted over with thesprinters, but most were back for another run. Asthe season continued their bodies adapted. Soon theside stitches disappeared, as did that ache thatthrobbed over the collarbone. The cottonmouth wasgone and the heavy breathing only returned whenthey were running hard. The leg muscles stillburned, but now they went farther and faster beforethe real pain came.

Camaraderie developed. A tough workout washard on everyone — maybe more so on the last tofinish, since they spent the most time running. There were no prima donnas here. The first onesoften stayed to cheer the last ones in.

Self-esteem rose. When the distance teamshared the track with the sprinters, guess whichgroup quit after six 200s while the other did four400s and two 800s? Even though only a few mayhave collected blue ribbons by season’s end, mosthad run distances and race times that far surpassedanything in their past.

When we worry about the younger generation, accusing them of having no goals and avoiding chal-lenges, I think about the kids who ran distance. While life may be easier today, the pain and hardwork needed to be a runner hasn’t changed. As longas we can find people to coach, parents to encour-age, and provide opportunities for youth to run, Ithink the future looks good.

Writer Dave Foley may be retired as a Cadillac High School teacher and coach, and as 14-year editorof Michigan Runner magazine, but remains active in

all things engaging.

ANN ARBOR (4/1/13) — Runners ate a Twinkie atthe start of the April Fools’ Day Twinkie Run, stoppedto eat another midway through the 5K, then tried tosprint the final 1.5 miles to the finish line.

Entrants has a minute subtracted from theirtime for each Twinkie eaten.

“It was a lot of fun,” said men’s winner AustinHorn, 17. “I didn’t cramp up as much as I thought Iwould from eating the two Twinkies.”

The Chelsea High School senior did have trou-ble swallowing the snack cakes. “They’re so dry, it’shard to get them down,” he said.

Horn timed 17:35. Next came Kevin Salter, 17,of Macomb (18:21), Alex Williams, 28, of Caro(19:35) and Benjamin Koch, 17, of Chelsea (19:38).

“Those Twinkies kind of slow you down and messyou up,” said Koch, Horn’s Chelsea High teammate. “Itwas hard running and eating at the same time.”

The blustery weather also challenged the 200entrants at Gallup Park. “It was cold,” said Sarah Temby, 32, of Ann

Arbor. “My toes were numb the first lap, thenwarmed up on the second one.”

The beauty of the double-loop course morethan made up for the discomfort.

“It’s gorgeous,” Temby said. “Running on the

paved trail, then onto the wood-chip trail and overthe wooden bridges enabled me to get lost in therun, rather than worry about who was behind me.”

Temby was the first woman finisher in 22:35but didn’t eat any Twinkies, “because I cannot eatany dairy,” she said. As a result, Twinkie-eatersCassie Hoffman, 18, of Rochester (22:52), KelleyKozloff, 36, of Ann Arbor (23:21), Deb Godmer,49, of Pinckney (24:29) and Cassie Williams, 27, ofCaro (24:33) all moved ahead of Temby in the finalstandings. (That’s what you get for eating yourTwinkies.)

Hoffman, a Stony Creek High School senior, struggled eating them. “I was still chewing the firstone when the race started,” she recalled. “The sec-ond one was even harder to put down.”

Williams also found the wind a factor. “It waswhipping around pretty good,” she said.

Twinkie Run proceeds went to the battleagainst ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

“I was happy with the turnout,” said race direc-tor Jackie Dalton. “We had a lot of late registrantstoday, even though the weather was so cold.”

Thank God forlow-tech.

Where would I havebeen this past winterwithout Yaktrax? Or lastsummer without deer-flystrips?

Forget high tech. Forgetall the wonderful synthetic wicking materials. Forget allthose massively-engineered midsoles. Forget GPS watchesthat break out your inch-per-nanosecond pace and milescovered to the 38th decimal place.

Yes, Yaktrax seem horrible overpriced, a cross-hatch-ing of small steel spirals that attach to your running shoesthat looks to be about 12 cents worth of material that canretail for anywhere between $20 and $30.

But what a godsend. One day this past March I didan eight-mile loop on the Potawatomie Trail in the Pinck-ney State Recreation area northwest of Ann Arbor. I’dbeen in Ann Arbor on business and got done early. Therewasn’t any snow in town, but there was plenty left when Ipulled into the parking lot at the park.

And the snow on those steep up-and-down trailshad been compacted by runners and skiers into athick, slick sheet of ice. Without Yaktrax, I wouldhave been too stubborn to just turn around and drivesomewhere else. I would have gone for a run, fallenlike 18 times on my aging infrastructure and proba-bly been permanently disabled.

With Yaktrax not a single slip, no falls, just eightmiles of gut-busting work that was more thanenough to rationalize a bag of Better Made potatochips and a Pepsi on the ride home.

I ran the same loop last June when the deerflieswere at their peak. To the rescue? A Tred-Not deer-flypatch. Talk about low-tech. The strips are two inchesby six inches, white on one side, brown on the other, with each side extremely sticky.

They are killing machines when it comes to deerflies, in as simple and nontoxic a fashion as possible. You need to wear a cap, then put the strip across thecrown of the cap, white side down, then go for a run.

Instead of being driven insane by deerflies, youjust motor along, barely aware of them. When I fin-ished the run last June, there were 24 deer flies stuckto the tape. Not one of them had bit me.

The way the strip works is from its inventorhaving noticed deer-fly behavior. They like to bumppeople on the back of the head, checking out theirsmell or who knows what, before taking a chomp outof their favorite spots, the backs of your arms orthighs. But they bop your head once, they’re stuck.

The strips cost $8 for a 12-pack and are onlygood to use once if the flies are out in force. I’m sure

the markup is impressive, but, still, what’s a lousy 67cents when it comes to slaying 24 deer flies on aneight-mile run?

Thank goodness for the long winter. No, I’mnot crazy. I just remember the eight days of80-degree weather up north last winter,

which got all the fruit trees budding just ahead of aseries of killer frosts in April that destroyed most ofthe cherries, apples, peaches and pears.

And the lack of snow all winter and the hot dryMarch made the soil so dry that there was barely amorel mushroom harvest in May.

So, hooray for no fruit buds this March. Hoorayfor lots of snow and, presumably, lots of morels.

There was plenty of new snow this year for thefifth annual Camp Pet-o-se-ga Snowshoe Race, twofairly-flat loops around a 300-acre forested park onthe shores of Pickerel Lake.

This is a cool event, no pun intended. They onlyget 50 entrants or so, but we are treated afterwards tohot dogs, chili and a generous raffle that ends up giv-ing something to nearly everyone.

If you haven’t ever done a snowshoe race, this isthe one to start out on. It’s the easiest course I’ve runon, with the cheapest entry fee and the best post-racerefreshments.

Camp Pet-o-se-ga will serve as a segue to mylast item.

I finished next-to-last in the 5K. My wife, Kath-leen, finished last. She’s a former Boston Marathonqualifier, a 20-minute 5K runner at her peak whowas a frequent age-group winner for many years. I’ma former 2:58 marathoner. Both of us are happy tojust be plugging along now, straining our hearts andlungs, still having an excuse to set the alarm on Sat-urday mornings.

Kathleen has a much better excuse for runningslowly than I do — she’s about to have double knee-replacement surgery and never runs pain-free, butgets enough enjoyment to make the pain worth it.

A letter writer from Traverse City who misun-derstood a recent column was pretty worked up in aletter she wrote to MR last issue. She thought a col-umn about the lack of fast runners these days wassomehow a criticism of slow runners.

“Mr. Henderson is likely too busy looking at agecategories, times, distances, number of racers andother statistics to ever have fun … Get a life besideshill fartleks, track work, training and writing boringand/or insulting articles. Relax, you only have somany heartbeats,” the writer said.

To set the record straight, I haven’t done a hill fartlek

or track workout in five years. I did run two fartleks lastfall, with six one-minute pickups in each run.

My long run this year is eight miles. As of theend of March, I had run 160 miles all year.

I love all the slow people at races. I’m one of them. Ifmore slow people had shown up at Camp Pet-o-se-ga, Imight not have finished next-to-last. My last run, a lep-rechaun 5K in Jordan March 24, I did in 28:29.

In 1981, the first story I ever sold about run-ning, to the Detroit Free Press about newbies train-ing for their first marathon, drew an angry letterfrom a serious runner saying I was doing a disserviceto the sport by encouraging people who ran slowerthan 8 minutes a mile. I thought he was a pompousass and made sure to continue to encourage slowpeople thereafter.

In the late 1990s and into the 2000s, I was thecoach for the marathon fundraising team for the De-troit area chapter of the American Diabetes Associa-tion. We encouraged slow, slower and slowest peopleto join us. On the long runs we did each Sunday, Ialways ran with the slowest runner, which meant 20-mile runs that took up most of the day.

It’s not all the slow people I was concernedabout in my column. It’s the near absence of anyonefast these days. I love running slow. I loved, also, hav-ing trained to the point where I could do half-marathons at 6-minute pace, or 5Ks at 5:30. Andhaving lots of other fast people to compete with.

I was in the Anchor Bar in Detroit in 1983when the Detroit Turkey Trot was created. I ran thefirst one and many thereafter. It was always called aTrot. It had fast people. Lisa Larsen Weidenbach wonthe first one for the women and later won the Bostonmarathon.

So, yes, Trot or not, some people ran fast. I wishmore people ran fast today.

Bless those who don’t. - MR -
