The now-defunctChannel to

Channel 20K Runhad nothing onwhat my TVremote can do.

For the race Iwould wake upearly, drive toWhitehall and payto run 12.4 milesthrough April snow

showers. With the remote I can twiddle mythumb, otherwise staying motionless, and tra-verse “Delta Farce,” Lions vs. Ravens,“Cindy Crawford’s Secret,” “Holiday inHandcuffs,” “Snapped,” “SpongeBobSquarePants,” “Jimmy Swaggart,” “Bindi theJungle Girl” and more.

I can choose the program and let it pro-gram me. Flip from one to the next andimagine segues. View channels I don’t get andgroove on the static, abstract-expressionistdots and flashes.

I can even revert to escapism and hit“off.”

I thought I was smart when I signed withmy cable company to get extra high-defini-tion channels for no more money. Now I’dpay more for less — and a fortune if theywould stop.

To this excess abundance add net surfing, texting, twittering ... and it’s small wonder Iam too busy to do anything.

It’s no wonder the Channel to Channelrace went kaput. Run 20K in the snow, watching only one channel: the one that con-nects White Lake to Lake Michigan? “LOL,”I would text friends today. “What’s the pointin that?”

“Do the thing and you will have thepower,” Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote. Hebelieved that active, direct experiences informus in ways that surpass what we learn beingpassive.

Now we plug in the thing and it has thepower. We risk little and gain even less as weserve the machines that serve us. Objects aresubjects of our lives; what’s remote is us.

The channel nearest me, in Saugatuck, just became public land on its south side. TheKalamazoo River enters Lake Michigan hav-ing drained 2,020 square miles and eightcounties. There is evidence man has used andabused it for more than 10,000 years.

When I run beside it, its stories flow tome: some I’ve read, some that people tell me.There is a story for every creature who feedsand drinks here, in each ripple and shore ittouches.

The small pieces I can document feed andflow to a great imagining. Still the sounds, smells and rhythm of breaths and steps I takefeel authentic.

This channel comes from and goes toplaces and times beyond me. It is alwaysthere, never static. We advance from remoteto engaged as we drink it in. MR

Michigan’s Lokken WinsNational Club Cross Crown

By Peter Derby

LEXINGTON, KY. (12/12/09) – Michigan’sTracy Lokken won his second USATF CrossCountry Club Nationals Men’s Masterscrown at Masterson Station Park, leading hisstate-based Front Line Racing Team to third

overall.Lokken, 44, of Marquette, blazed over a

course of perpetually-rolling hills with unevenfooting to finish the 10K course in 32:10.

Atlanta TC won the team honors, withFront Line finishing third out of 16 entries ona day with low- to mid-30s temperatures.Joining Lokken were teammates PaulAufdemberge, 44, fifth in 32:29; MikeScannell, 47, 13th in 33:32; Eric Stuber, 46,37th in 34:48; and Steve Menovcik, 41, 44thin 35:03.

Several were also members of FrontLine’s 2006 masters title team. Lokken wonindividual honors that year too. He finished

second in 2007 and third in 2008.

In other races, David Jankowski of ZapFitness broke away from a highly-competitive

10K Open Men’s field to prevail in 29:18.

Serena Burla of the Riadha team toppedthe 6K Open Women’s field in 20:23.More than 42 men’s and 29 women’steams vied for open titles.

In the Women’s Masters field,Laura Haefeli of FleetFtBlderRwrfastclaimed the 6K in 21:57.

In the team competitions, ZapFitness won the Open Men’s with a low60 points, all five of its athletes finish-ing under 31:07.

Playmakers Racing, the onlyMichigan-based club this division, wasled by 2009 Michigan Runner of theYear Nick Stanko, who placed 27th in30:50. The Lansing -based team placedeighth for the second year in a row.

“Some of the clubs here are essen-tially professional runners,” said JimRobinson, founder of the Playmakers-supported outfit. “Other clubs, such asClub Northwest and New York AC,have been in existence for 30 years.

“To come in eighth is a greataccomplishment,” he continued. “WhatI’m excited about, and what our guyswant, is to do better.”

Other scoring runners on thePlaymakers squad included ToddSnyder, 30:58; Scott Schmick, 31:17;Grant Robison, 31:50; and KristopherKoster,32:11.

For my part — a runner fromCadillac, Mich., who now lives in theNew York area — I finished in 32:06,good for 88th in the Open Men’s racefor Central Park Track Club.

The race was hard-fought and therough terrain made for a true cross-country experience. Afterward, I con-

curred with Robinson’s remark that, “thiswas truly measure of the national competi-tion and gives our runners a chance to gaugewhat’s out there.” MR

ABOUT DAVE. After Dave Hinz died in anauto accident the day after last Thanksgiving,a friend asked me if I knew him. Yes, I did.

We were roommates with two others inAnn Arbor in 1978-79. I didn’t see a lot ofthem because our schedules were different,

but the year didn’t pass without us getting toknow each other fairly well.

All of us loved to run and in later yearsachieved some success. Dave’s fitness curveimproved steadily over a five- to six-yearperiod and he went on to win the 1982Detroit Free Press Marathon, run 2:12 atthe 1983 Boston Marathon and representthe U.S. in the Pan-Am Games Marathonlater that year. He became an exceptionalage-group duathlete in his early 50s.

I attended Dave’s funeral in Jackson. If Iwould have stood to say a few words aboutthe father of three and grandfather, this iswhat I’d have said:

Two days after Dave died, I was on abike ride on a 41-degree day, wind blowingand it started to rain. I was only 20 minutesinto a two-hour ride and hoped the rainwould stop. Instead it started raining harder.I was barely dressed well enough and beganthinking how miserable the conditions wereand how much more miserable I’d becomebefore reaching home.

After about 45 minutes of rain, itoccurred to me that as much as I disliked itand could find little in the way of a silverlining in the either the conditions or exer-cise, Dave would have both loved andhated it.

He would have hated it for all the samereasons I did, but would have loved itbecause, for lack of a better way to put it, heliked to turn lemons into lemonade. He wasadept at finding the good in the bad anddelighted in alternatives to what passes forordinary. All the while he was a conservativeat heart.

While camping in northern Michigan thispast September, I was taking care of businessat around 3 a.m. and looked skyward. WhatI saw took my breath away. There were stars, more stars than I’d seen in too many years.Horizon to horizon, the sky was speckled bydots of white, shimmering in the black.Mesmerized, I stood there for a few minutesbefore the cold sent me back inside.

It’s impossible to look at a sky like thatand not consider our place in the grandscheme. The stars reminded me that every-thing is small stuff and we’re only here for alittle while. In that time we’ll be touched byothers.

Dave touched quite a few and reachedhigher in some ways, pursuing his interests, than many will. He made the most of thesmall stuff in his life.

Answer: Trason won 14times between 1989-2003with a best of 17:37. MR

Verran Enjoys ‘Dickens’ of ReturnBy Charles Douglas McEwen

HOLLY (12/12/09) — Coming back from hipsurgery, Clint Verran, 34, of Rochester, hopedto get under 33 minutes at the Run Like TheDickens 10K. But he brought serious heat toa frigid morning and blazed a 31:49 courserecord.

“I’ve been riding my bicycle hard everyday since surgery three months ago,” said theveteran Hansons-Brooks Development Projectrunner. “So the aerobic engine was there. ButI had no idea what shape my legs were in.”

Despite a temperature well below freezing,Verran had plenty of company. Some 1,059runners turned out for the 10K and 5K races.

“It’s always cold here. But this is one ofthe greatest races in Michigan,” Verran said.

He had won the Run Like the Dickens8K in 2006 and 2007. Last year, the 8Kbecame a 10K, won by Nick Stanko in 32:06.

Verran led this year’s 10K from the start, although Samuel Parlette, 16, of Milfordstayed on his heels for the first half-mile.

Parlette eventually finished second in 35:40,followed by Mike Messina, 19, of SterlingHeights, third in 37:39.

Fourth overall was masters champ JohnNiven, 45, of Swartz Creek in 38:07.

Rachel Quaintance, 18, of White Lakeentered and won her first women’s 10K in40:35. Next came Karen Meraw, 24, ofWarren in 40:57 and Cadia Humpula, 26, ofSaint Charles in 42:06. Deb Deren, 50, ofWhite Lake was masters queen in 44:34.

Quaintance, an Eastern MichiganUniversity freshman, came from behind to tri-umph. “She (Meraw) was ahead of me and Icaught up to her,” she said. “We ran together, then I took the lead after four-and-a-halfmiles.”

Quaintance’s parents also ran well atRun Like the Dickens. Her father, Tim, wonhis 45-49 age group in the 5K and her moth-er, Ruth, was the 5K women’s masterschamp.

Richie Brinker, 33, of Snover and JackieRzepecki, 31, of Rochester Hills were theoverall 5K winners.

Brinker, who buried the men’s field early, finished in 16:05. Next came Blake Yard, 16,of South Lyon in 17:17 and Stefan Morrell,17, of White Lake in 17:19. David Adkins,42, of Livonia was fifth overall and top mas-ter in 18:00.

Rzepecki had to fight off Eryn Caton, 28,of Rochester over the final couple miles. “Ihad to run like the Dickens to hold her off,”said Rzepecki.

“We were side by side (going into thefinal mile),” said Caton. “On the last 800(meters), she started to pull away.”

Rzepecki finished in 18:36, Caton in18:42. Brooke Kovacic, 14, of Oxford tookthird in 20:18.

Race director Rob Basydlo, 43, ofHighland finished ninth in the 5K in 18:35.Not far behind him, his daughter Cassidy, 12,won her 11-12 age group in 24:34.

Winning the 5K walk were Rick Huber,53, of Montrose (28:55) and Beth Przybylski,46, of Grand Blanc (31:45). The day’s funalso included a Tiny Tim Trot.

Introducing the Crim 10-MileArchives Database

By Riley McClincha

Q — Who has run the most Crim 10 Milersin under 60 minutes? (Answer at end.)

On Dec. 22, 2009 the Crim 10-Miledatabase went online. It is now possiblefor anyone to search and gather their

Crim times from the present back to 1977.

Outside of the Crim and New York CityMarathon, I know of no other U.S. races thatbegan before the age of PCs that have alltheir finishers on one online file.

Nearly 160,000 runners have run down theSaginaw Street bricks and crossed the 10-milefinish line in Crim’s 33 years of existence. Allare in the Crim Archive Database file.

Gathering information to build such adatabase would be relatively easy for the last14 years. All runners can go to Web sites andgather race times for electronically chip-timedraces 1996 to present. At the Crim site, researchers can gather all times before 1996.

Ninety thousand of the database recordswere inputted digitally. So where did theother 70,000 records — the ones from 1977to 1995 — come from? I’m embarrassed yetproud to say I typed them all in by hand. Ittook an estimated 700 hours over 18 monthsto accomplish. A testament to the race I love,or to being crazy? (I’m not answering that.)“Why?” is the big question most folks ask.

The main reason for the database was tofind and honor people who have run 30 ormore Crims, but my hope is that it will beused for more. Many more questions cannow be answered.

The record will also be there for anyresearcher looking at race trends since therunning boom of the 1970s. Here are just afew things I have found through researchingthe database:

A. There has been a dramatic increase inmedian finish times since the 1970s. The mid-dle-of-the-pack finisher in 1979 was 1:16:40.It was 1:38:12 in 2009. That bit of informa-tion might be useful to one wondering, andwriting about, why times have slowed downover 30 years.

B. The database also shows how the race, though deemed an international event fromthe beginning, has grown away from localiza-tion. In 1977, 58 percent of participants werefrom the Flint area. Last year, 58 percent ofthe runners were from outside Flint; local

runners figured 42 percent.

C. Women will outnumber men for the veryfirst time at the 2010 Crim 10-Mile. That is apretty safe bet since last year the men onlyoutnumbered the women by 0.3 percent. Inevery year since 1988 — the year after theCrim became a multiple-event race — womenhave averaged 1.5-percent increase per yearin the 10-mile. At the very first Crim in 1977,less than 10 percent of the field were women. If the rate continues as it has in the last fiveyears, at the 50th Crim men will representless than 10 percent of the field.

I knew if the Crim database was ever tobecome a reality, I had to make it happen, foroutside of the Crim office nobody had asmuch result information as me.

I diligently began gathering results backin 1991. It was 15th Crim and I had been leftoff the list of entrants who had run all ofthem. A little miffed, I gathered the results Ihad, which were from old stashed-awayMichigan Runners and Flint Journals. I wasstill missing a few years, so I went to the FlintPublic Library and found them on microfilm.

I used the information to prove to then-Crim race director Lois Craig that I hadindeed run all 15 Crim 10-milers and shouldbe included with the 33 others being recog-nized. From then on, I continued collectingresults with just the intent of keeping track ofthose who had run every Crim.

The idea of a database first came up inthe late 1990s when Anne Gault was racedirector. After seeing the monumental taskand cost, the idea was dropped. To startwith, the Crim office didn’t even have com-puter printouts of every year’s finishers, letalone on computer.

Fast-forward to August 2006; FlintJournal writer Chris Machniak wrote a storyabout runners who had ran 29 of the 30Crims — runners who had missed only a sin-gle race. This group had been watching fromthe sidelines as we who had never missed aCrim received honors at its 10th, 15th, 20th,25th and 30th runnings.

Feeling that the group who had missedonly one Crim should somehow be recog-nized, I asked present race director DebKiertzner what she thought. She, like herpredecessors, had always endorsed the idea ofhonoring longtime Crim 10-milers, but didnot have the means to find runners who qual-ified. I told her to leave that to me.

The Crim office helped by giving me allthe finish-line computer printouts that theyhad. I scanned those, then the three yearsmissing from personal hard copies ofMichigan Runners and Flint Journals.

Finding 30-year runners by lookingthrough the scanned documents was a hit-and-miss process, but eventually I verifiedeight runners who qualified for the honor. Ilater found out that I had missed two run-ners. From my errors and the work involved,I learned that if I was to continue doing thisyear after year, a database was needed for theresearch. In November 2007, using MSAccess, I began inputting runners’ informa-tion from scanned documents.

Flash forward 18 months. In April 2009 Ifinished typing. It was a big deal to me,inputting that 69,298th record of the data-base. I gave myself the big “Tada!” that Ideserved. Some might say what I did wastedious, trivial work, but I actually enjoyedthe process. (Of course, I once memorized pito 10,000 decimal places. It doesn’t takemuch to entertain me.)

I need to thank a few people for theirhelp over the past few years, starting withDeb Kiertzner: without her support I’d neverhave gotten started. Thanks goes to Crim’sMarti Austin, who helped me find computerprintouts, boxed and stored at an off-premisefacility; and to John Jerome, who converted afew online records to spreadsheet files.

Kudos also to Gault Race Management.Anne and John Gault have given their fullsupport in the project by providing spread-sheet files from their online years.

I hope non-Crim runners, as well as thosemaking up the 160,000 Crim finish times, take advantage of the online database. Someof your questions may not be answerable bythe online version, but many fields and sub-databases are not in the online version, soplease feel free to contact me.

And remember, much of it was typed byhuman fingers, so if you find mistakes oromissions, let me know [email protected]. You can also help byreporting name changes or multiple versionsof first names so they can be merged andfound by a single search. Happy searching atwww.Crim.org/raceresults.

Joe Thornburg:Larger Than Life

In Remembrance

“I have fought the good fight. I have fin-ished the race. I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim4:7)

By M.B. Dillon

“Do what you can today. Don’twait for tomorrow.” Thatwas one of Joseph R.

Thornburg’s beliefs, and a key reason hewas still fit and running in his nineties.

A popular resident of Henry FordVillage in Dearborn, Joe died there peace-fully April 28, 2009, after a short illness.

On Sept. 23, 2006, he celebrated his90th birthday at Diehl’s Cider Fest. As heneared the end of the 4-mile run that day, Joewas cheered by dozens of friends and rela-tives who formed a human tunnel. His smilebeamed brighter than the early autumn sun-shine as he crossed the finish line.

Joe would have turned 93 on Sept. 27,so he was especially missed at races this pastfall. Runners keenly felt the absence of theirbeloved local legend.

Longtime friend and fellow runnerMaggy Higgins Zidar often drove Joe toraces (and supplied the birthday cakes.) “Thewhole time he was running he’d be smiling,no matter what the weather,” said Maggy.“I’d be complaining; Joe would be smiling. That was his trademark.”

Maggy met Joe in 1990 on an Aer Lingusflight to Ireland, where both celebrated theirIrish heritage as they ran the DublinMarathon. Joe, then 74, sought out Maggyon the jumbo jet over the Atlantic, havingheard about her and her intention to run themarathon from a mutual friend. He spottedMaggy’s fingernails painted with the Irish tri-colors, and an unbreakable bond of friend-ship was born.

“I remember taking Joe to the Oak AppleRun,” said Maggy. “I would turn my back forone minute, and there would be six peoplearound him. How can someone make friendsthat fast? His enthusiasm was contagious.

“At Caribou Coffee afterwards, people

would come up to Joe and say, ‘Thank youfor helping me through the race.’ They wouldbe so grateful.”

A1938 graduate of the University ofNotre Dame, Joe ranked first in hisCollege of Pharmacy class (something he

never divulged to friends) and lettered in track.

His blood ran blue-and-gold all his life.He often took family and friends to reunionsin South Bend, Ind., never missing the chanceto run the concurrent Sunburst 10K andcharge into the Notre Dame stadium to finishon the 50-yard line. He took the scenic routehome, stopping at his favorite Amish restau-rant and treating his companions to delicioushome-style dinners.

At the expansive Henry Ford Village, Joewas known for visiting with no fewer than50 people at mealtimes. He’d jog or walklaps outside, even in the snow and ice.

“Joe always carried a small leather note-book to record his mileage and other impor-tant information,” said running friend NinaBovio, who first met Joe in the early ‘90s inNotre Dame’s stadium at a Sunburst run.

“It really impressed me to see his dailyentries in that logbook that said ‘no run,’even after he was sidelined by age.

“Joe’s warmth and smile was a magnet,”added Nina, so impressed with his times thatshe still remembers them. “In 1998, Joe ranthe Notre Dame 10K in one hour. In 2003,he ran it in 1:06:17.”

She recalled running an emotional Fourthof July race with Joe in Frankenmuth just sixdays after the death of his wife of 59 years,Mary. Nina had entered the 20K but decidedjust before the gun to accompany Joe in the10K.

“Joe was a steady runner,” she said. “Henever stopped for water, despite the heat. Wepassed several girls, walking, and he teasedthem for being too slow.

“As we entered our fourth mile, I noticeda street named ‘Mary.’ I pointed out the signto Joe and said, ‘Mary is with us.’ Joeresponded, ‘Mary is in heaven.’ His finishingtime was 1:31:11,” Nina said.

Joe counted among his closest friendsrunning stalwarts Dolores and HarrisonHensley, a special couple Joe was assured ofseeing at a race nearly weekend; Dolores vol-unteering at registration and the finish line, and Harrison racing.

“Joe always loved the fact that Doloreswould give him a kiss, even in front ofHarrison,” said Maggy. “The Hensleys wereamong Joe’s dear running friends,” addedMaggy, who cherishes memories of takingJoe to Dolores’ birthday party after she(Maggy) and Joe ran The Big Bird. TheHensleys put on the Run thru Hell eachAugust, and “of course, Joe was one of theirfavorites,” Maggy recalled. “The last fewtimes when I drove him, Joe would quietlytell me that Dolores refused his money at lateregistration. Joe often talked about howsweet she was, and how Harrison was begin-ning to mellow.”

Joe’s funeral mass was celebrated by Fr.Ed Prus at St. Columban CatholicChurch in Berkley.

“When you love, you are always talkingabout the one you love,” said Fr. Prus. “Joehad tremendous love in his heart. Whether itwas Notre Dame, running, Ireland, his chil-dren, grandchildren, great-grandchildren orfriends, these were the things and people heloved and constantly spoke about. Today wecelebrate Joe’s life, his strong Catholic faith, and God’s love for Joe.”

Fr. Prus, one of the leanest, most athletic-looking 80-year-olds you’ll find, befriendedMary and Joe Thornburg at Royal Oak’sShrine of the Little Flower Catholic Church,

where the Thornburgs were raising theiryoung family, and Fr. Prus served as pastor.Joe and Mary’s daughter, Pat Thornburg ofBelleville, said her parents volunteered oftenfor the church.

“Dad did the weekday readings andMom reconciled the collections,” Pat said.“Dad wouldn’t miss a Tuesday supporting thelocal Meals on Wheels, and both were activewith Focus Hope in Detroit.”

Joe attended Notre Dame against all odds.Born in 1916 in Union City, Ind., he wasan only child whose parents divorced

early on.

“My Dad really was raised by his grand-mother, Maggie Costello,” said son JohnThornburg of Utah. “His mother, KathleenJones, opened a beauty shop and workedvery hard to save the money so he could goto Notre Dame.”

“It was his mother’s and grandmother’smission to get my Dad to Notre Dame,” Patsaid. “This was the plan before he even wentto high school, and he went along with it.My grandmother even convinced the highschool to offer physics so my father would bebetter prepared.”

As a new pharmacy graduate, Joe “got toknow Charles Walgreen, the drugstore CEO,”John said. “World War II had just started andDad was off to war. Mr. Walgreen providedhim a guarantee that when he came backfrom the service, he’d have a job.”

Joe joined the U.S. Army Medical Corpsattached to the Fighting 69th, rose to firstlieutenant and was awarded the Bronze Starafter tours in Okinawa, Japan and thePhilippines.

“He ran the ambulance unit for theFighting 69th on the front line,” said Pat, an

assistant professor of nursing and a Ph.D. atWayne State University. “He told me, ‘Myjob was to pick up the bodies.’

“Dad helped set up the first medical sta-tion in Tokyo,” she added. “He said it wasdevastating.”

The Army offered the young lieutenant apromotion, but Joe had had his fill of warand was eager to get home to his sweetheart,Mary Kaczanowski of Hamtramck, whom heeventually married Feb. 2, 1946.

Pat said that coincidentally, years later,Joe played golf in Royal Oak with a fellowsoldier he’d rescued during the war. “In time, the man’s health declined, and Dad deliveredMeals on Wheels to the same guy,” she said.

Joe and Mary were close to Sister MaryChoiniere, pastoral associate at St. Alan’sChurch in Troy, where for many years in

retirement they attended mass and receivedcommunion daily.

“Joe was a shining example for us all,”said Sr. Mary. “He never missed mass. Heloved his God, he loved running and he lovedhis family. You never saw a more devotedhusband.”

Sr. Mary introduced John Kearn, a fellowparishioner at St. Alan, to Joe. “Joe was mymentor. He took me to deliver Meals on

Wheels,” said Kearn.

“Joe was older than a lot of the home-bound people he visited. He gave me a goodpiece of advice: ‘Chat with them, but don’task them how they are. You’ll be there allafternoon.’

“Joe and Mary always did the littlethings that make a difference,” Kearn added.“I learned from their example that we needto give what we have to each other.”

“Over the years, Dad worked veryhard as a representative for anumber of pharmaceutical

companies,” his son, John remembered, “andwe moved from Detroit to Royal Oak. Hehad eight years of piano training in gradeschool and I remember him playing Irishsongs at the holidays.

“Dad loved to golf,” John went on. “EverySaturday he’d go out with his buddies and play. After golf, he’d clean his clubs, mow and edgethe lawn, then have a beer with the neighbor. He took a lot of pride in taking care of thehouse and yard. He paid attention to details. One of the key things he taught me was thateverything had to be in its place.”

Joe played high school basketball, pitched with a traveling softball team, bowled300, had a hole-in-one, “and before myMom, could win at craps and was a poolshark,” said Pat. But other sports took aback seat when his late son Jim got him run-ning seriously at age 60. The two ran theNew York Marathon together in 1987.

“Dad won tons of medals and plaques,”John said. “He ran more than 500 races, including the Detroit Free Press Marathon twicein the 1980s. It was an unbelievable accom-plishment to have run six marathons, as well asnumerous half-marathons, in his late 70’s and80’s. He appreciated everything, every day.”

Joe, John and grandson Jeremy, then 12,ran together at the 2005 New Year’s EveRun on Belle Isle. To make a great day

even better, Jeremy and Joe won their agegroups, and three generations of Thornburgmen were interviewed on television.

The Thornburg work ethic lives on in thecouple’s children, four grandchildren and twogreat-grandchildren. “Dad would say, ‘Youare getting your work done, then playing,’”said Pat. “Dad had that ability to work hardand play hard. He embodied that.

“His favorite saying was, ‘I was a luckycuss.’ I’d say, Dad, you worked at beinglucky. It’s there for the taking, but you haveto work for it.”

When life got him down, said Pat,“all my Dad had to do was lookaround his apartment at the pic-

tures from his past: World War II friends, his

NOVI (2/7/10) — Under mostly cloudy skieswith temperatures in the teens, nearly 1,200runners turned up for hot dogs, chips, muffins, cookies, pint glasses and ... oh yeah— a 5K run. Now in its 11th year, RunningFit’s Super 5K race remained faithful to itspromise of great junk food and pint glassesfor all finishers after they completed the rela-tively-flat 3.1-mile course.

We runners like our free eats, but it wasserious stuff for Angela Matthews. TheWestland resident raced to the finish in17:43, setting a new course record and lead-

ing the women to the finish for the thirdstraight year.

Also keeping with tradition was RunningFit employee Mike Blaszczyk of Novi, whoclaimed overall honors in 16:19. Blaszczyksaid he was happy to uphold the stores’ maleemployee five-year win streak, and thankedIan Forsyth, last year’s champion, “for notattending.”

The course features a long out-and-backstretch on 11-Mile Road. Blaszcyk said it was“cool to see all the people” on his way to thefinish.

“Everyone was really supportive. It wasgreat seeing my friends and co-workers cheer

me on, but all of the other runners did aswell,” he said.

Race director and Running Fit ownerRandy Step concurred with Blaszcyk’s senti-ments. “What struck me the most,” Step said,“was the very fun, low-key and festive mood. The people who show up on a cold winterday for a race are special, fun people.”

Keeping in the spirit, Step asked membersof the “St. Paulie Girls” Dances With DirtTeam to serve the eats since Hooters, lastyear’s finish-line food sponsor, had to pullout, undeniably a sign of the times.

Complete in petticoat, skirt and stock-ings, Kelly Ottaviano, enjoyed “socializingwith the runners” and said she would defi-nitely make a repeat performance next year ifasked.

“Having all those things around in clearview, talking to people, praying and Guinnesskept him smiling even through the losses offamily members, friends and his own mentaland physical abilities.”

Joe’s prayer life and faith sustained hisfamily, added Pat, who at age 6 gave her par-ents a terrible scare and was not supposed tolive. “Dad said two rosaries every day. Onewas for me and the second for my mom, whosuffered an aneurysm in her 60’s.

“He believed that having a rosary in hispocket saved him too,” Pat added. “Oncewhen delivering Meals on Wheels, Dad wasrobbed at gunpoint. But the robbers left himalone once they saw his beads. All they tookwas his money.”

Favorite spots for Guinness were FourGreen Fields and Kiernan’s pubs, where Joe— with his affable personality, slight build, light hair and Notre Dame apparel — wassometimes mistaken for legendary ND foot-ball coach Lou Holtz and treated to drinks. At a golf course he frequented, employeesmistook Joe for a priest. “He met a lot ofpeople; he’d introduce himself to strangers. He’d ask them how they were and put asmile on their faces,” John said.

Upon Joe’s death, the Monogram Club ofNotre Dame over-nighted a scroll to be readat his funeral, signed by President Fr. JohnJenkins and the athletic director, which read,“This is to attest to Joseph Thornburg, ’38,endowed with the Notre Dame Varsityinsignia as his alma mater’s tribute to his loy-alty in track. In addition to his children Pat and John,Joe is survived by grandchildren ChristineDarling (James Meyers), Kevin Darling,James Thornburg and Jeremy Thornburg;and great-grandchildren Jessica Hackney,Lauren Hackney and Savannah Meyers.

God’s speed, Joe. Thank you for anexemplary life of love, excellence and service. And until we meet again, may God hold youin the palm of His hand.

New Year’s Eve Run Marks 40 YearsBy Charles Douglas McEwen

DETROIT (12/31/09) — When Jeanne Boccistarted the New Year’s Eve Family FunRun/Walk in 1970, Richard Nixon was enter-ing the third year of his presidency, theBeatles had recently broken up and theDetroit Lions had just completed a winning(10-4) season.

Bocci held the race near her house withabout 16 entrants and gave out fruitcake asan award.

This year, more than 1,400 runners andwalkers came out to Belle Isle for the 40thanniversary of the Fifth Third Bank NewYear’s Eve Family Fun Run/Walk. Many ofthose entrants, including four-mile race win-ners Clint Verran, 34, of Lake Orion and DotMcMahan, 33, of Rochester, weren’t evenborn when this event began.

Verran and McMahan, who both run forthe Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, returned from challenges faced months earli-er: hip surgery for Verran, childbirth forMcMahan.

Both looked on top of their games racinginto the cold winds on Belle Isle, finishing more

than a minute ahead of theirclosest rivals.

Verran (19:53) toppedChristopher Lutz of AuburnHills (21:32) and ShaneLogan, 31, of Pontiac (21:47).

Lutz, a triathlete whotrains with Verran, tried tostay on his heels early in therace. “We were out in 4:53,then began to run into a niceheadwind,” Lutz said. “Clintreally took off after the secondmile.”

Verran, who has won thisrace before, knows Belle Islewell. “I used to train here all thetime when I was at Wayne StateUniversity (working on his mas-ters degree in physical therapy)from 1998 to 2001,” he said.

McMahan captured thewomen’s four mile in 21:54.“That’s an unbelievable time!”said Verran after watching hercross the finish line. Onlythree men ran faster.

“It’s a great way to spring-board into the new year,” thewinner said.

The next woman to crosswas Sterling HeightsStevensville High School seniorMelanie Brender, 17, in a per-sonal-record 24:42.

“I went out like an idiot,” Brender said.“My first mile was 5:55, which is ridiculouslyfast.”

Still, she finished strong and looks for-ward to running this race again. “I’ve done itevery year since I was a freshman,” Brendersaid. “I love this race! The people who put iton are so friendly. They had a ton of food atthe finish. They really take care of you.”

Chelsea Earls, 26, of Ann Arbor finishedthird in 24:57. “This was the first time I’verun this race,” she said. “It was a lot biggerthan I thought it would be. I would definitelyrun it again next year.”

The top men’s and women’s masters wereBrian Wilson, 40, of Livonia (23:57) and

Christine Vincent, 46, of Jackson (27:02).

Livonia residents T.J Gurski (40:09) andMisty Hoyer (41:31) paced the four-mile walk.

Joining Fifth Third Bank as sponsorswere Hansons Running Shop, WaligorskiRoofing, Galeana’s Van Dyke Dodge andMichigan Runner.

Bocci gets race volunteers from theDowntown Runners and Walkers, Belle IsleRunners, Lakeshore Striders and employeesof Fifth Third Bank.

“I want to thank Jeanne and her volun-teers for 40 great years,” said Verran.“Anytime I’m in town, I’ll come down andrun her race. Promise!”

The Heart of a RunnerBy Steve Hulst

As I write this, I’m in the beginningstages of cardiac rehab, Phase I,kindergarten for those recovering

from a heart attack.

Never in my wildest dreams would I haveseen myself in this situation. I look aroundthe room and see men 10, 20 or 30 yearsolder than me.

How could this have happened to me —a runner for 37 of his 53 years? The answer:genetics. A family heritage that has seenuncles, aunts and a mother have heartissues.

Two weeks earlier I had been out for theusual 6 a.m. run with my buddies. As it start-ed my chest felt tight, and I thought I wascoming down with bronchitis or H1N1.Elementary teachers are susceptible to thesekinds of things.

During the run my chest became tighter.Having the philosophy “no pain, no gain,” I

tried to push through it, but eventually cutthe run short for 3.5 miles. Still thinking Iwas dealing with some kind of flu, I cleanedup and headed off to teach my third-gradeclass.

Not long after, I called my doctor for anappointment later in the day. His nurse askedme questions, then said words that made methink it was more serious: “Steve, you needto go to ER.”

Between calls to my wife, school secre-taries and teaching partner, I knew it wastime to get to the hospital. At this pointeverything became a blur of being admitted, doctors, nurses, nurse techs working allaround me and off to heart cath.

The diagnosis was a small blockage of atiny vein in the septal region of my heart. Theheart itself and arteries were in great shape.

My heart has always beaten as a runner, and now it may hold me back from doingwhat I love. The past few weeks have beenfilled with emotions and given me time to

reflect on why running and my heart are sointertwined.

As long as I can remember, running hasbeen tied to my spirituality and faith. Thequote from the film “Chariots of Fire” (Ihave seen it five times) that I have held on tois, “God created me to run. When I run I feelHis power.”

A long easy run on my own was often atime to meditate. Running has also been atime of connecting and building relationships. Many of my running buddies have been partof my life for 15 to 20 years. Waking upearly, training many miles in preparation forthe racing season and braving all types ofweather have developed lifetime friendships.

Being part of a running community hasallowed me see the best attributes in thehuman race: dedication, perseverance, per-sonal achievement and pride. These experi-ences and many others have kept my heartbeating as a runner, and hopefully soon I willbe back to doing what my heart beats forevery day. MR

Winter Witch’s Hat Throng Braves Wind Cold as Witch’s Heart

By Charles DouglasMcEwen

SOUTH LYON (2/6/10) — Astrong, biting wind made cheeksred, sent shivers down spines andprevented PR’s. Despite it, a record328 runners bundled up for thefifth annual Winter Witch’s HatRun, sponsored by the South LyonHigh School boys cross countryprogram.

“It was probably the windiestrace I’ve ever run,” said AndrewPorinsky. “It was also a little onthe cool side. But it’s winter inMichigan. You might as well makethe most of it.”

Porinsky did, taking a big leadduring the first half-mile and goingon to win the men’s 5K in 16:45.“I was hoping to do sub-16:50,”he said. “I can’t complain aboutbeing in the 16:40s on a day likethis.”

Matt West, 34, of Ypsilantitook second in 17:29. Thomas Preiss, 40, ofSouth Lyon took third and led masters run-ners in 17:37.

Preiss, who has won this race twice in thepast, runs it every year. “There were yearswhen it was cold and snowy, but it’s neverbeen this windy,” he said. “For people likeme who don’t weigh much, wind like thismakes it hard to stay on your feet.”

Two South Lyon residents battled forthe women’s title. Erica Aittama, 37,passed Maggie Sadler, 16, midway throughthe course and continued to victory.

Aittama, a former Western MichiganUniversity runner, finished second in thesummer Witch’s Hat last September.

“I’ve done the summer Witch severaltimes,” she said. “This was my first timefor the winter version. It was hard tobreath out there. I tried to get behind someguys and let them block the wind for me.”

Aittama finished in 20:51. Sadler, whoruns for South Lyon High School, crossedsecond in 21:22. “It’s not close to my PR,”Sadler said. “But it’s good for February. Iwant to be much faster by April.”

Sadler’s SLHS teammates, Caitlin

Millis and Christina Swain, both 15, tied forthird in 22:53. Mary Thayer, 40, ofNorthville was the women’s masters winnerin 23:10.

Race director Scott Smith, who coachesthe boys cross country teams at South Lyonand South Lyon East high schools, said morethan two dozen area high school students

competed. Race volunteers had to endure thefrigid weather as well, Sadler noted.

“I’m blessed with a great group of volun-teers who do registration and help with thecourse,” Smith said.

By Tom Henderson

Nothing like writing my spring columnas I get ready for another snowshoerace, this one in Alanson in Emmet

County, the last of a three-week stretch ofraces, including a record-setting field at theBig Foot 5K in Traverse City and a tiny fieldat the third annual Frozen Foot 5K alongTorch Lake, which had about the best chiliI’ve ever had to help thaw out the innards.

The column gets me thinking spring whileI’m still able to enjoy what’s left of winter.

And thinking spring gets me thinkingsummer trail races and where I need to makeplans. Alas, I won’t need to worry aboutmaking room reservations in Eagle Harborfor this year’s Keweenaw Trail RunningFestival, Jeff Crumbaugh’s wild, wacky andtorturous three-race trail spectacular in mid-July in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Jeff has announced he has pulled the plugon the race, citing the travel difficulties ofputting on the races while living inWisconsin. Jeff is too polite a guy to caststones, but I’m not nearly so nice, so let mecast away.

The KTRF drew in big crowds by UpperPeninsula standards, with trail junkies com-ing from around the U.S. They stayed inmotel rooms, ate in restaurants, took minetours and sunset boat rides and pumped a lotof dough into the local, struggling economy.

Six, seven years ago, I ran into AmbyBurfoot, then the editor of Runner’s Worldmagazine, at the Frozen Foot 5-mile roadrace in Traverse City. The Traverse CityTrack Club had him in as their guest speakeron Friday night and he ran the race the nextday. I had sold Amby a bunch of stuff overthe years, including profiles of Michigan’sgreat miler, Paul McMullen, and first-personaccounts of running in cool places such as themountains of southern Guatemala.

I told Amby about Jeff’s KTRF and saidhe should come and run it. Amby had a bet-ter idea: I should run it and write about it forRW and he’d pay me for the story, pay memileage and pick up a couple of nights’ worthof lodging and meals. (Boy, was he in for asurprise when he got the mileage invoice for1,200 miles; I had to explain to him byphone that it was closer to Atlanta, Ga., frommy house than it was to Eagle Harbor.

RW ran a big piece on the race series, with a bunch of cool photos by MichiganRunner Senior Photographer Carter Sherline.

The next year, I rued having sold Ambythe story. I couldn’t get my motel room: ithad long since been reserved, and my wifeand I could hardly find a place to eat, withhundreds of visitors holding their RunningWorlds in their hands and eating at everyplace I recommended.

It was a glorious race weekend, and everyyear it got better. Jeff kept the Saturdayevening hill climb from Eagle Harbor to thetop of Mt. Baldy the same, but greatlyimproved the 10K and 25K by moving themto Copper Harbor.

The Keweenaw Lodge, a county-ownedresort and golf course, served as headquarters, and the place’s lodging sold out every year.

You’d think that would mean open arms.It didn’t. That’s what happens when govern-ments own things. Last year, the lodge wassupposed to provide breakfasts to all finishersof Sunday’s 25K, as it had in the past. Withhalf the runners still on the course, the man-ager, a relative of one of the county officials, told Jeff they were shutting down the kitchen, and to Jeff’s fury, they did just that.

That was just one of many problems Jeffhad last year. Life is too short. Knowing hefaced the same headaches this year, he pulledthe plug.

As for his polite excuse, Jeff comes a greatdeal farther into Michigan from Wisconsin toput on August’s glorious 10K and 25K runs toTahquamenon Falls in the U.P.

It was a grand 10 years, Jeff. Glad I metyou at the Popeye 10K in Eagle Harbor the yearbefore you had the first KTRF so you could tellme all about it and get me so fired up. Glad Imade it to so many of them. Ticked off, now, that I decided to skip last year.

~~

Which reminds me of other greatraces that have come and gone overthe growing number of years I’ve

been at this. In no particular order, I bemoanthe loss of:

• Emily’s massive fun runs in downtown Detroit in the 1980s.

• The Grand Prix 5K on Grand Prix weekend in downtown Detroit.

• The 10K-arrot run on Belle Isle.

• The Scotty Hanton half-marathon and marathon in Port Huron over Labor Day weekend, where many a PR and Boston-qualifying times were set.

• The Trenton Treadmill 8K.

• The Governor’s Cup 5-miler at the State Fair.

• Two of the three races of the Motor City Striders mid-week series, which is down to a one-night-only deal now.

• The Big Boy 10K at the Silverdome.

• The Blue Cross/Blue Shield series in downtown Detroit, scheduled so you could do three races in one morning: a 10K, 5K and one-miler.

• The Ultimate Runner in Jackson, a one-day trial/torture comprised of a 10K, a 100-meter dash, a 400-meter dash, a one-mile on the track and a marathon.

• The Sibley Shoes 10K on Belle Isle.

• A Labor Day three-race series in Battle Creek, name of which escapes this spongy mind.

• The Redford Roadrunner Classic.

Oh, stop, it’s spring; time for happierthoughts.

~~

Happier thoughts such as the racepackages the Hanson brothers haveput together. Why weren’t they doing

this when I was running 80 races a year, mostof them in the Detroit area?

Keith and Kevin offer cut-rate deals onbulk entries to races. You can do the GrandTour, 20 races for $125; the TraditionalCircuit, 13 races for $90; the Mini Circuit, eight races for $55; or the Sample Circuit, five races for $25.

By Paul Aufdemberge

Over several years of running, I havebeen positively influenced by manypeople. Coaches, teammates, training

partners and even competitors have taughtme much about running and racing. I couldcredit many of them here but inevitablywould forget to include someone.

A little easier to quantify would be thebooks that have had an effect on my running. Ihave been educated and motivated by the writ-ings of some of the best runners and writers. What follows is a list of my top ten favorite orpersonally most influential books. I’m sure thereare some excellent works out there I’ve neverread, but here are my selections:

1. “The Self-Made Olympian,” by Ron Daws. One of the first running books I ever read, Icouldn’t have done much better than this one.I found it in the Hillsdale College library andas a relatively-new runner I read about thetraining Daws did to progress from an aver-age high school and college runner to a mem-ber of the 1968 U.S. Olympic team in themarathon.

This book ranks high for both informa-tion and motivation. Unfortunately it may bedifficult to find; after reading it as a collegestudent I did not see it again until I spotted itin another library in 2007, where I had thepleasure of re-reading much of it.

2. “Daniels’ Running Formula,” by JackDaniels, Ph.D. No other book has had such adirect affect on my training. I have usedmany of the workouts in it, particularly in hissection on marathon training.

In addition, Daniels provides a table ofwhat he titles “VDOT Values,” which listsequivalent race performances for distancesfrom 1500 meters to the marathon. He thenrecommends appropriate training paces forvarious types of workouts, based on a run-ner’s fitness level as determined by race times.

Daniels’ programs are based on his almostunmatched background in exercise physiology, but also on experience and common sense. Acouple of examples from the text:

“Don’t train harder for the sake of train-ing harder; train harder to achieve better fit-ness and better performance.”

“Another way of looking at a race is tostay with your competitors until you can’tstay with them any longer, then pass them.”

3. “Running and Being,” by Dr. GeorgeSheehan. I have a paperback copy of this onefrom many years ago. It is a collection of essays bythe running philosopher and is different from anyof the other books on my list.

Neither training guide nor bio of a cham-pion athlete, Dr. Sheehan’s work capturesbetter than anyone the essence of runningand why we love to run, with always theright quote from history or literature to helpexpress his thought.

4. “Pre,” by Tom Jordan. A terrific account ofthe life of Steve Prefontaine, the Oregon dis-tance great who died tragically in 1975.Jordan includes numerous stories and quotesfrom those who knew Pre. It is a more intri-cate and realistic portrayal of Pre than eitherof the movies made about his life. Just read-ing over the list of Pre’s races at the end ofthe book is a glance into greatness.

5. “The Miler,” by Steve Scott. As a highschool student, I was once asked by a collegecoach if I’d like to race against Steve Scott.Clueless, I had no idea who Steve Scott was.If you are a student of the sport, don’t makethe same mistake.

This is an entertaining read and givesinsight into the life of a world-class miler. Itmight make you want to go to the track andcrank out some quarter-mile repeats.

By the way, when I finally got my shot atracing Scott some 10 years later — at my dis-tance (10K), in my weather (cold), he at the

end of his career and me in my prime — hedestroyed me and most of the other young-sters in the field.

6. “The Perfect Mile,” by Neal Bascomb. Ariveting account of the race to run the firstsub-4:00 mile, Bascomb expertly weavestogether the stories of three men from differ-ent parts of the globe: England’s RogerBannister, Australia’s John Landy and WesSantee of the USA. Of particular interest tome were the exploits of Landy and Santee, whose accomplishments haven’t been as well-documented as the more-famous Bannister’s.

7. “Staying the Course: A Runner’s ToughestRace,” by Dick Beardsley and MaureenAnderson. Beardsley, who is most famous forhis 2:08 “Duel in the Sun” with AlbertoSalazar at the 1982 Boston Marathon, tellshis story with his characteristic humility andhumor. His road to running success is enjoy-able to read about, and his recovery from aterrible accident and addiction to prescriptionmedication is inspiring.

8. “Running with the Buffaloes,” by ChrisLear. Lear spends a season with the ColoradoUniversity men’s cross country team and docu-ments tragedy and triumph. Learning about thetraining and getting to know the personalitieson the team makes for an exciting book.

9. “The Runner’s World Training Diary,”published by Wiley & Sons, intro by JoeHenderson. This is the running log I haveused most frequently. I enjoy the tips for eachweek and the space to write goals for eachweek. Occasionally I’ll refer to an old log andam usually surprised by something I wrote init, as workouts and races accumulate andmemory fades.

10. “Juggernauts,” by Steve Adkisson. Thisaccount of a runner’s high school days innorthern Kentucky in the ‘70s may not bewell-known, but I had the good fortune todiscover it through MR columnist ScottHubbard. The author includes humorous sto-ries and serious training, and I come awaywith respect for these hard-working runnersand their coach.

I’m certain that others would come upwith lists that differ greatly from mine, buteach of these books is memorable to me.Happy reading!
