During one of my recent rounds of leisurelygolf this spring I was playing with my friendand fellow golf professional Jerry Roman,Head Golf Professional at Hidden RiverGolf Club, and we were hitting a few extraputts on the final green and Jerry started tomake putts with his sand wedge one afteranother from about 10 feet. He mentioned tome that he likes to practice this inside of the10 foot range to get better feel and control ofthe clubface as well as it forces him to focusmore on his ball contact. Since that time Ihave had many of my students practice thisduring our lesson times and they have hadgreat success. The basis behind this practicedrill is to softly putt the ball with the leadingedge or blade of the wedge and control the
distance by maintaining the angles set withyour wrists. It’s fun to have small challengecontests with your friends while gettingsome great practice time in. Once you putyour putter back in your hands you feel anincredible amount of confidence with bothcontact and control.

Over 300 hundred players from 20 countriesand 43 states competed at this year’s U.S.Amateur Championship in Colorado.
The great state of Michigan had six playerswho qualified or were exempt for the cham-pionship including Randy Lewis from Almawho captured the 2011 U.S. “Mid”Amateur Championship.
In addition to Randy from Michigan wereBrett Quitiquit (Highland, Mich.), JeffChampine (Rochester Hills, Mich.), EdBowser (Dearborn, Mich.), Justin Holyszko(Bay City, Mich.) and Joey Garber fromPetoskey.
First round of qualifying found favorablescoring conditions with 45 players underpar. Bobby Wyatt from Mobile, Ala. wasseven under par shooting a round of 64 tolead all scores. Bobby played his first roundon the Cherry Hills course.
A group of six players shot 65, setting upquite a race for Medalist honors.
From Michigan, Joey Garber shot a round of70 and was tied for the 46th position and ingood shape to make the cut for match play.Everyone else from Michigan struggled abit, forcing himself to shoot a low score inthe second round. Jeff Champine shot 74followed by Bowser and Quitiquit with 76,Holyszko at 77 and Lewis with 79.
The low scoring barrage continued in thesecond round with Bobby Wyatt tying the36-hole qualifying record with a score of132, 9 under par. Jeff Osberg fromPhiladelphia, Pa. and Cheng-Tsung Panfrom Chinese Taipei tied for second with ascore of 134, followed by SebastianVazquez from Mexico with 135. Bobby,Jeff, Cheng-Tsung and Sebastian will holdthe first four positions for match play.
Joey Garber seemed to be in the best posi-tion for a Michigan player to reach matchplay but Joey slipped in the second round toa score of 77 and a total score of 147, fourshots above the cut line for match play.
Evan Bowser on the other hand stepped uphis play in the second round, firing a scoreof 67 to tie 17 other players with a score of143. All 17 players would go into a playofffor one of the 14 spots left in the field ofmatch play. Evan survived the playoff but hewent down to the final wire to capture oneof the last match play positions. At 17 yearsof age, Evan was the youngest player toqualify for match play competition.
Randy Lewis and Brett Quitiquit would fin-ish with a score of 151, followed by JustinHolyszko with 153 and Jeff Champine at162 but would not qualify for match playaction.
In the first round of match play, Wyatt andPan, the top two seeds, continued their fineplay and won their matches handily.Unfortunately, Pan played Evan Bowserfrom Dearborn, sending the final contestantfrom Michigan home.
Osberg and Vazquez, the other top seeds, lost their matches to Fox and Purser whosurvived the early morning playoff to getinto the match play field. In fact, half of theplayers in the playoff won their openinground matches knocking off top seeds in thefield.
The remaining top two seeds, Bobby Wyattand Cheng-Tsung Pan, won their secondround match and Cheng-Tsung Pan contin-ued to roll in third round to reach the quar-ter final. Wyatt had a little more trouble inthe third round where he squared off withhis Alabama Crimson Tide teammate JustinThomas from Goshen, Kentucky.
Each player held a 2 up lead at some pointin the match but it was Thomas who sur-vived the battle with 1up victory to moveinto quarter final competition.
The quarter final competition didn’t lastlong as the matches were a little lopsided.Thomas continued to win with a 2 up victo-ry but the remaining top seed, Pan,was elim-inated by Brandon Hagy from WestlakeVillage, Calif. 4&3.
The other two matches were won by “play-off survivors” Michael Weaver from Fresno,Calif. and Steven Fox from Hendersonville,Tenn. Michael and Steven traveled a longway from barely qualifying for match playto contestants in a semifinal match. Michaelwon his match 4&3 and Steven won 4&2.
In the semifinals, Weaver and Fox continuedthe “fairy tale march of survivors to con-tenders” with Weaver defeating Thomas3&2 and Fox defeating Hagy 2 up.
The final match was tight throughout thecontest with both players holding smallleads at different times but it would be Foxwho would come out the ultimate survivor.Steven Fox was down 2 with two to play andwould win the last two holes to extend thematch and win it on the 37th hole.
