It’s a generator. It’s a heat exchanger. It’s the new propane technology. The Marathon Engine Systems ecopower™ cogeneration system does it all in one neat package. This innovative, propane-fueled combined heat and power system earned a 2011 Energy Star Emerging Technology award. Why? In part, because this generator allows homeowners and small businesses to return all unused electricity to the main power grid — resulting in a usage credit or a lower overall utility bill. In addition, the ecopower unit is good for the budget and the environment because it turns engine heat into thermal energy, which can power space- or water-heating applications while producing signifi cantly fewer CO2 emissions than traditional power plants. Learn more about this technology and how you can use it with free online training courses, including those below, at buildwithpropane.com/training.

2013 PHC/Mechanical EXPOThe Soaring Eagle Resort, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

Wednesday, March 6, 201310:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This show is a great opportunity for you and your employees to see new and existing products available to your company and meet the people behind these products. In these tough economic times, this is great opportunity to see how our local sales representative and manufacturers can help us. It always amazes me how much I learn about the different products from the representatives there. Also represented there are a multitude of resource people from our industry such as software companies, code affiliates, tools, chemicals, and countless others. Just about every phase of our industry is represented! Try to find the time to visit the expo on March 6, 2013. You will find it worth your while. After the expo, the local Indian Tribe won’t stop you from spending a few dollars with them either!

We expect a full house, as over 3,000 products from over 400 manufacturers of plumbing-heating-cooling products will be on display

The Expo has always been free to the industry. Contractors, installers, representatives, wholesalers, inspectors, and specifiers are invited to attend.

What do the Beach Boys,Mickey Mouse, and T&S low-lead faucets have in common?

Mickey Mouse® and the Beach Boys® are trademarks of Disney Enterprises, Inc. and Brothers Records, Inc., respectively, and T&S Brass has no affiliation with either such entity.

They all got their start in California, and they all swept the nation. Although California led the way with the AB1953 legislation mandating low-lead faucets, it’s only a matter of time until they are required in all states. And T&S is ready — all of our faucets are low-lead compliant and are available across the country. And, as always, T&S faucets are as rugged and reliable as they come, and meet the requirements of the Buy America Act. Contact your sales rep for more information.

PMC and Michigan MCA Chapters Bring Dr. Katz to Learning Fair

Pete Chaney, MCAA Staff Safety Director presented the program“Mechanical Indus-try Safety Affairs in 2012”, for the members of the Greater MI PMC. The rate at which occupational safety and health affairs change is nothing short of astounding. New topics and issues are introduced regularly and unforeseen changes to existing issues occur frequently.

Our members best defense is to stay informed. Mr. Chaney presented a seminar that covered the most urgent occupational safety and health issues and topics that af-fect the mechanical construction and service industry. The seminar covered new safety topics, applicable regulations and legislation, safety and health resources, and money.

Ever wanted to learn how to make chocolate candy or find out more about the dangers of electricity or how HVAC works? Lo-cal area children learned about those topics and more when they headed to the Spring Arbor University Learning Fair with their friends and families.

The 19th annual event provided children with hands-on learning. Angela Klobuchar, a Spanish teacher at Northwest High School coordinates the event.

The learning Fair provides a unique, hands-on opportunity to explore technology and the arts-- demonstrated by gifted crafts-men and dynamic companies from across Jackson County and Michigan.

In an effort to educate youth on the benefits of a career in the plumbing and me-chanical industry, the Greater MI PMC along with Michigan MCA, again cosponsored Dr. Jerry Katz at the recent Learning Fair held at Jackson Area Career Center.

Dr. Katz of the National Foundation of Energy Education (NFEE) works with MCA chapters around the country. Jerry has participated in the fair for several years and was a great hit with both students and parents. Before the 2012 event was finished, we had already been contacted asking for us to sponsor the presentation again, due to the outstanding comments from the Learning Fair participants.

UA District 2 Apprentice Contest at Greater MI Joint Training Center

Joint Labor-Management Fund Sponsors Skills USA State Competition

Team Bora Bora and Make A Wish Foundation

The United Association of Plumbers, Pipefitters, Sprinklerfit-ters, Steamfitters and Service Techs in cooperation with UA Local 190 and the Michigan Pipe Trades Association held the 6th Annual District 2 Apprenticeship Contest in June at the Greater Michigan UA Local 190 Joint Apprenticeship Training Center.

Every year apprentices compete from all around the coun-try to showcase the skills they have learned throughout their apprenticeship.

The skills competition consists of five disciplines related to our trade. They are Welding, Plumbing, Pipefitting, HVAC, and Sprinklerfitting. Along with these disciplines, apprentices are tested on their rigging abilities as well as crane hand sig-nals. The national competition starts at the state level, followed by a district competition, and ending with the national com-petition which takes place at Washtenaw Community College during the UA Instructor Training Program.

Ann Arbor Student Home Building Program students won their second straight State Team- Works championship bringing the gold medal home to Ann Arbor. An all first year student team represented four A2 high schools at national competition in Kansas City, Missouri from June 23rd to 28th to compete for the national title. Retired UA member, Gary Dresselhouse was there to wit-

ness the event and also served as one of the plumbing judges for the event. As winners of last years event, it was the pleasure of our local program to host this years event.

Materials funding presented quite a chal-lenge with the PMC and UA Local 190 Joint Labor-Management Fund providing funding for all the plumbing materials.

With the help of UA Local 190 and the Greater Michigan PMC Team Bora Bora raised $11,775.00 for the Make-A-Wish foundation. Our total distance was 318 miles that was covered in three days. There were 900 riders that participated in total and the ride raised $2 million dollars from this years ride and will fund over 150 wishes for kids’ with life threatening illness.

The 59th Annual United Asso-ciation (UA) Instructor Train-ing Program (ITP), was held at Washtenaw Community Col-lege. As stated by UA General President William Hite, “As we begin our 59th United Associa-tion Instructor Training Pro-gram, I would like to take this opportunity to express my ap-preciation to all those involved in training in the UA. So much depends on the skill and dedication you bring to the task of preparing future generations of UA tradespeople, and it’s only due to your unparalleled commitment that we continue to be recognized as having the finest training program in the world. This is an especially challenging time for all of us, and I want to acknowledge the commitment represented by your participation in our In-structor Training Program. We all know that we must continue

to prepare for what lies ahead, and I truly believe that we are starting to experience an in-creased demand for our skilled journeyworkers.”

The Mechanical Industry Labor-Management Fund, which is comprised of Greater MI PMC and UA Local 190, co-sponsored the UA’s Cham-pions for Charity 5K run dur-ing UA Week.

The United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters and Champions for Charity, spon-sored its first Annual 5k and Pub Crawl. Held in Ann Arbor, on Monday, August 13th. The Run was to raise awareness for the Semper Fi Fund. The money that was raised from the Pub Crawl will benefit the In-jured Marine Semper Fi Fund which provides immediate sup-port for injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.

LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS

Thomas J. Storey has served the Mechanical Contractors As-sociation of Detroit, MSAE, the City of Detroit, the Repub-lican Party and the community of southeastern Michigan for forty-five years. His average work week during all these years has been sixty hours long. His productivity is unmatched in the industry and his voice speaks in the interest of contractors, minorities, women and youth.

Tom Storey has worked with many, many contractors dur-ing his forty-five years. All have supported his innovative ideas and come to respect his dedication as he works tirelessly on their behalf. Staff and contractors alike cannot imagine our association without Tom.

In his role as Vice President/Director of Governmental Affairs and Community Relations, Tom has inspired and led several important initiatives: He works tirelessly with the City of Detroit to recruit minorities, women and De-troit residents in order to comply with the City’s Executive Order #22 (more recently named Executive Order 2007-1) which requires percentages in each category to be attained by contractors working within the City. Tom’s efforts have paid off and young people from the city know Tom’s name as the person to contact when applying to become a plumber or pipefitter apprentice. This effort has involved countless presentations at Churches, Schools, Community Centers and Town Hall Meetings. The relationships developed mean that when Tom calls, a meeting with the mayor or city council members can be quickly arranged.

Tom has also worked with the Phillip Randolph Career and Technical Center for many years, educating students as to career opportunities within the construction industry. He continues now to work with plumber and pipefitter appren-tices, teaching them the contractor perspective of the indus-try. He sits on the Pipefitter Apprentice Training Committee that oversees all aspects of apprentice training.

Mr. Storey served on the Board of Directors of the Eight Mile Boulevard Association for many, many years and he continues to raise funds for their signature annual event, the Eight Mile Boulevard Leadership Luncheon.

Tom raises over $15,000 annually so that the leadership of southeastern Michigan (over 500 people) can network and listen to Detroit’s and Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County Executives. His

work over the years for this association has helped to keep Eight Mile Boulevard clean and attractive and much more than the “divide between Detroit and the suburbs”.

Tom has been a strategic visionary for the Michigan Society of Association Professionals (MSAE). Over the years, he has led many initiatives for the organization. Tom introduced MSAE to their legislative education strategy. He had MSAE do a program from the United States Chamber of Commerce called “Political Insight”. MSAE subsequently purchased the license and con-ducted this program throughout the state. Tom also connected

MSAE and The Eight Mile Boulevard Association at which time MSAE leaders began attending the Eight Mile Boulevard Leadership Luncheon, reaping the political networking ben-efits. Today MSAE members often bring their own association members to this important annual event. Mr. Storey also helped get the CEO Detroit Circles program started and was a regular attendee at them. Tom has been an advisor to Cheryl Ronk in the political arena, especially in Detroit. Finally, Mr. Storey has served on the following committees: Academy, Nominating, CEO Education, Magazine, and Legislative. He also helped teach MSAE’s Academy.

Tom is personally and professionally active with the Oakland County, State of Michigan and National Republican Parties. His principles reflect those of the Party and his ac-tions on their behalf over the years have given needed support at all levels. Tom has campaigned actively for local mayors, county executives, state senators and representatives, gover-nors, national senators and representatives and many presidents too. Over the years, he has devoted thousands of hours to these political activities.

The community at large has also benefited from the many good works of Tom Storey. He has been on hand for each and every “Clean Up Detroit” effort, he comes to the rescue when a call comes in from a person/family in need of plumbing or heat-ing repair by contacting a willing and able contractor to assist pro bono, he has helped churches and schools to make major

repairs to their facilities by again hooking up the organization in need with the number of contrac-tors who could help. Shelters and community organizations have also been recipients of services arranged by Mr. Storey. He worked for many years on MCA Detroit’s Project Heat’s On/Water’s Off that served up to 80 families in one day each October and several Habitat for Human-ity Projects. More recently, Tom has supported Cornerstone Schools and the Boy Scouts of America, Great Lakes Council, again focusing on youth and the development of their learning capacity and career opportunities.

Mr. Storey is also loving and supportive to three children and five grandchildren. He finds the time to attend all family events and church activities too.

It is impossible to estimate the number of lives that Tom Storey has touched. It is only fitting that he will receive the Michigan Society of Association Executives “Hall of Fame” award this year, as he begins to wind down his illustrious career.
