It’s a generator. It’s a heat exchanger. It’s the new propane technology. The Marathon Engine Systems ecopower™ cogeneration system does it all in one neat package. This innovative, propane-fueled combined heat and power system earned a 2011 Energy Star Emerging Technology award. Why? In part, because this generator allows homeowners and small businesses to return all unused electricity to the main power grid — resulting in a usage credit or a lower overall utility bill. In addition, the ecopower unit is good for the budget and the environment because it turns engine heat into thermal energy, which can power space- or water-heating applications while producing signifi cantly fewer CO2 emissions than traditional power plants. Learn more about this technology and how you can use it with free online training courses, including those below, at buildwithpropane.com/training.
• Impact of Combined Heat and Power Systems in Residential and Commercial Buildings
• Specifying Propane Standby Generators: Installation and Value Considerations
• Propane-Enhanced Renewable Energy Systems
• Produces both heat and electricity for residential or small commercial applications
• Won the EPA 2011 Energy Star Emerging Technology award
• Reduces energy use and curbs CO2 emissions by 20 to 30 percent

[ 6 ] Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractor | Fall 2012
Those of you that enjoy hot weather; you’re having a beautiful summer. Those of you that don’t, just wait, this is Michigan your day is coming.
Hot weather like this is good for our members in the cooling business. It makes everyone want air conditioning. It’s amazing where you can find a business opportunity.
This issue of MPMCA magazine is dedicated to all the fine members, contractors and associations that give so freely of their time, talent, and treasures to help others. The phrase “Blessed to be a blessing” applies to so many of our members.
My wife and I are very active in our Church, not only do we serve as leaders at Detroit World Outreach, but we’re also serving as leaders in another church, Destiny Worship Center in Northville started by one of our close friends and
his wife. Between running our business and serving the Lord our plate is really full, but it’s something we love doing.
You may ask yourself, what can I do I’m only one person. Get involved in your community, local association or church, it will make a difference in your life and in the lives of others.
For all most 40 years now, I’ve been a supporter of the Christian Children’s Fund. Over the years I’ve supported four foster children in Uganda, Africa. I can’t help every child in need, but think of what a wonderful world this would be if we all helped just one.

Sparrow’s Children Center, UA Local 333 and 3MCA partnered to recognize a leader in community service in the tradition of labor leader Doug Griffith (pictured left) and to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network on Friday, May 18, 2012. This year the event raised $3,735.
Mid-Michigan MCALOCAL ASSOCIATIONS
The featured “Miracle Child” was 4-year old Evan Yaney of Grand Ledge (pictured above, with Sparrow’s Vice-President of Development and Strategic Partner-ships, Stella Cash). Evan was diagnosed with leuke-mia in July 2010 and has undergone chemotherapy and more than a dozen hospitalizations since. He has more years of treatment to complete, but that doesn’t appear to be slowing down the energetic and happy child. Also speaking on Evan’s behalf was Dr. Renuka Gera, MD (pictured above, right) of MSU’s Depart-ment of Pediatric Oncology & Pediatric Hematology. “The treatment for the children is long, so it needs to happen close to home in their own environment,” said Dr. Gera. “But this is only going to be possible with the community support.”
The Doug Griffith Community Service Award was presented this year to Mike Green of UAW Local 652 (pictured bottom, left with Larry Smith). Mike Green epitomizes a great leader that has no ego, believes in his faith, goes the extra mile and is a strong advocate for working people.

The 2012 Sparrow Children’s Center Telethon (pictured below) on June 1-2, 2012 raised more than $756,000 to benefit the young patients of the Sparrow Chil-dren’s Center. The money raised during the telethon will help fund improvements to the Sparrow Children’s Center and ensure the on-going advancement of medical care for all children in mid-Michigan – regardless of their ability to pay. 3MCA and UA Local 333 were phone bank sponsors and jointly donated $10,000 (Judd VanCoppe-nolle & Becky Brimley pictured right).

What do the Beach Boys,Mickey Mouse, and T&S low-lead faucets have in common?
Mickey Mouse® and the Beach Boys® are trademarks of Disney Enterprises, Inc. and Brothers Records, Inc., respectively, and T&S Brass has no affiliation with either such entity.
They all got their start in California, and they all swept the nation. Although California led the way with the AB1953 legislation mandating low-lead faucets, it’s only a matter of time until they are required in all states. And T&S is ready — all of our faucets are low-lead compliant and are available across the country. And, as always, T&S faucets are as rugged and reliable as they come, and meet the requirements of the Buy America Act. Contact your sales rep for more information.

One of our favorite project continues to be Habitat for Humanity.
The Flint PMC membership continues to be actively involved in Habitat for Humanity. This year we are sponsoring a number of houses where the PMC pays for the materials to do the mechanical work at homes. UA 370 apprentices work on the program as part of their training.
Doug Wyrwicki , Past President of the Association is a member of the Board of Directors for the local Habi-tat for Humanity organization and has spearheaded the Associations involvement in the project. He continues to work on this for us, even since his recent retirement.
By working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, our volunteers experience for them-selves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership.
Scholarship ProgramThe Scholarship Program for the
children of UA Local 370 members and contractors continues to be a very success-ful endeavor.
It has been in existence since 1988. The number of scholarships varies from year to year, but this past year we tied our all time high when twenty-one scholar-ships were again awarded. The program is an excellent way to support those indi-viduals that we hope will have an interest in making the plumbing & mechanical industry a career.
Carriage Town MinistriesThe Flint Association continually supports
the Carriage Town Ministries. Partnering with Carriage Town is an on-going program of the Association as they reach out to the homeless of our community.
The Ministries has been serving the home-less in the area since 1950, “rescuing the least, last, lonely, and the lost”. As stated by Execu-tive Director, Dallas Gatlin, “Because of your generosity, many found a home here at Car-riage Town this winter!...I cannot adequately describe in a few words what it is like to go from homelessness to hope , but I can tell you what it looks like and there is nothing like it!”
North End Soup Kitchen
The North End Soup Kitch-en provides meals to the home-less and indigent. The work done by the Kitchen is much needed in our area. Families, individuals and senior citizens turn to the Food Bank network for relief with food, many for the first time. The Flint As-sociation has been a financial supporter of the Kitchen for a number of years.
