Visitors Are Always Welcome!

Farm NewsThis month we would like to talk about our Robotic Milkers. This year, was a turning point; being that it’s been three years, things have become more smooth. Older cows have adjust-ed well taking only a day for them to hit the robots after freshening. Heifers usually take a bit longer between 7-10 days to go in regularly on their own. Currently, cows have a Rolling herd average of 33,000, milking 3.3 times a day. A herd favorite an Observer gave over 200 pounds of milk for two weeks straight. We give credit to all cows being comfortable, high quality corn silage, haylage, and consistency with robots.

hefirst“TopofMichigan”Salewasheld Oct. 17, 1972 in Marion with very stringentrulesforselection.Sixty-fiveheadweresold, all greater than breed average for milk/fat. Glen Casey had recently purchased the Marion Sale Barn and was promoting the area as the “DairyCenterofMichigan”.DistrictVIIwasthefirstdistricttomanagetheirownsale.Itwasthenheld at Evart from 1975-1979 and moved to April.

This was the impetus for the AIO Club (Arenac, Iosco and Ogemaw counties, on the east side of District VII) to begin a Fall Sale. They hosted a fall sale from 1978-1995. So for many years, the District had two annual sales, one in April and one in September. The AIO sales were initially held at the Iosco County Fairgrounds in Hale. Then in the late 80’s or early 90’s, the sale was moved to the Ogemaw County Fairgrounds. Thru the years, auctioneers who stepped up to the AIO block were Chuck Chestnut, Jim Cook, Ron Lamoreaux and Paul Warner. A few of the dedicated AIO Club members were Robert Schmitt (Standish), Duane Reinke (DHIA tester from Tawas), Dennis Wangler (West Branch), Burt Mier (West Branch), Don David (Prescott), Harold Stephens (West Branch), Wayne Erickson (Prescott), John Bennett (Prescott), Leon Rau (West Branch), Richard Beck (West Branch), Kenny Daniels (Sterling) and Nancy Belleville (Prescott).

Back to the Top of Michigan Sale, which was moved to the new Isabella Fairgrounds in 1980, where it continues. Certainly sale highlights include 1983 (10th anniversary) with Louis McNeilly’s top-selling lot, a springing Conductor daughter selling for $15,600. In the same sale, a 4-month Bell daughter going for $7,500 and a 6 year old cow bringing $7,600. Six other lots went for over $4000 that year. Consignments were from Michigan except three from New York.

A Glance Back at District VII Historical Sales

T This sale was a product of the sale chair Mark Wentland’s leadership and the fact he spent much time visiting farms and hand-pickingselections from herds. The celebrity Horace Backus read pedigrees.

Notable milestones:•1981,MMPAdonatedmilkandHarvestore donated food for the Friday open house.•1985,firstembryossold.•1996,apartsilentauctionwastried.•2001,“oneofthemostprofitableinalongtime.”•2006,attheendofthesale,fiveheifersweresoldtobenefitNorthernMichiganChristian School, a practice which has continued since.

It is the effect of building block upon block. As the sale is the foundation for promoting exceptional Holstein cattle, many otherpromotional activities relyuponthisfinancialfoundation.Atthe1975sale, Cregg Farms of Scottville donated a calf to the Juniors to auction. From the proceeds, six Junior members attended the National Convention in Chicago. In 1980, again a calf from Cregg’s sold for $1300, which covered expenses for Juniors to attend the National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee that year. With the income from the sales, the district startedofferingagiveawaycalfraffleforyouthin1985 that has continued. The district also covers the meal cost at annual meeting, and there are noentryfeesfortheshow!!!Toencouragemorebreeders to classify, they paid 1/2 the cost forthefirsttimeclassification.

District VII Holstein Association has hosted the “TopofMichigan”Salefor43years.Thesalechair for 2016 is Mark Bontekoe (231-920-7898). If you have an exceptional Holstein that you would like to consign for the April 23rd sale, give himacall!

I’m trying to keep the stress to a minimum this year, (although don’t ask Sadie about my on line shopping computer stress, she is a life saver). I have great Christmas memories as a kid growing up. My memories make me smile and bring me joy. One time we had company and we had to give up our bed. heveryfirstJerseyJournalwaspublishedinFebruary 1947, as the Calhoun County Jersey Journal. It was editedbyClaude“Corky”Stout, thefatherofRichard(Dee)Stout.DeewasalongtimeofficeroftheMichiganJerseyCattle Club, serving as President and Secretary-Treasurer.

At the annual Michigan Jersey Cattle Club meeting in January 1947, a great push was made to make Michigan Jerseys better known throughout Michigan and the nation. It was decided to publish a magazine called the Michigan JerseyJournal.Thefirstissuewasmailedtoover1000Jersey breeders.

In 1951 we started publishing a joint issue with Indiana. RobertHatfield,Remus,MichiganandAlphaGilmoreofJeffersonville, Indiana were the editors. At the end of this joint venture the American Jersey Cattle Club came to us asking permission to use the name, Jersey Journal for their soon to be publication. Permission was granted for the name to be used for the new national magazine.

I Remember When...

T Previously a magazine known as the Jersey Bulletin was a privately owned national publication, but the AJCC wanted to print their own.

From 1954-56 the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club secretary sent out newsletters regularly. In 1957, a quarterly publica-tion was once again started, it was called Michigan Jersey News. Evelyn Shephard was editor at that time. In the early 1960s Jac Cooper was the editor. Yours truly took over in 1962 until Judy Conn was editor and continued at the helm from 1971 to 1980. After which Lynn James Rodgers took over. After Lynn you all probably know better than I the status of the news.

However, I know as a former editor, it was very important for the Jersey breeders to support your paper by getting ads in and on time. Also sending reports and news

Editor’s Note: A big thank you to Mrs. Piepkow for men-tioning the importance of advertising in the Michigan Dairy Cattle News and for taking the time to write down her mem-ories for the rest of us to enjoy.

he practice season begins long before school is out for the summer in some counties. Dairy 4-H members across the state gather with coaches and team mates in preparation for another year of competition at Michigan Dairy Days held in July. The culmination of all that studying is one hot, sweaty week in July where teams and individuals compete for the chance to represent Michigan in a national contest. This fall, Michigan 4H teams and individuals proved that they had earned a place in a national contest by their outstanding performance in each contest.

Two dairy management teams and one judging team represented Michigan at the All American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The state winning team of Maddie Meyer, Cameron Cook, Allie Schafer and JoshMarkeltookfirstplaceinthecontest.Maddiewas high individual in the contest, returning home with a $1000 scholarship. Their second team of Jessie Nash, Carmen Hicks, Mariah Dershem and Holden Schrader placed fourth. Coached by Rod Pennock and Luann Lerner, the team had set a goal of winning thenationalcontest.“TheykeptchallengingLuannandIallsummerforinformation,”Rodsaid.Thecontest consisted of seven parts---judging, linear evaluation, feedidentification,DHIArecords, businessmanagement, calfmanagement, meatidentificationand quality assurance. On their way home, the group

played a round of miniature golf on a course inside of a cave. Representing Michigan in the Dairy Judging Contest in Harrisburg were Evelynn Okkema, Lance Frahm, Josh Markel and Lauren Heberling. Yet another group of Michigan 4H dairy judges took home the blue at the North American International Livestock Expo in Louisville this November. The team alsoplacedfirstinoralreasonsandearnedseveralindividual awards. Members of the team coached by Joe Domecq include Allison Schafer Cameron Cook, Skylar Buell and Maddi Meyer. The quiz bowl team from Michigan hailed from Allegan County and consisted of Samantha Boetcher, Christina Ybema, Jared Westendorp and Jacob Rottier. Gathering around a small group of cattle to evaluate udders, teat placement, feet, legs and dairy character may seem unusual to a non-farmer. But somewhere in the middle of breaking down the best and worst of each animal and placing them first, second, thirdandfourth, friendshipsareborn.Somehow, a team effort in solving a dairy problem or question while practicing for quiz bowl makes teams out of individuals.

Sometimes those moments lead to hysterical laughter. Sometimes practices carry over to a local ice cream or fast food hang out. Kids who only a few weeks ago barely recognized each other are new friends who not only practice together, they spend their free time together, too. And it’s all thanks to the cow.

CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANTAs of December first, Darren and Shannon Evans of St Johns, MI have assumed the reins of daily manage-ment at Netherhall Dairy. They come to work with us after a summer of assisting Tim and Liz Heinze who were the operators the past nine years. They have a range of experiences that could make farm life more interesting for us: their three children are all 4-H age and are learning about showing dairy as well as beef cattle (Shannon grew up with registered Polled Herefords and showed with our kids at Clinton County 4H fair).Darren has many years experience with larger dairies. Shannon was a milk tester. We plan on some barn remodeling this spring and a lot of pasture renovation.

We wish Tim success in his new venture as a partner with his uncle at H&K Dairy LLC at Bannister MI. Tim has assumed the role of herd manager and we have full confidence in his skills, recognizing that 500 cows in a high output TMR fed confinement dairy is a new challenge after 70 cows rotation grazing on a grass-based dairy.

OUR LATEST OUTCROSS SIREOur first calves from MAKER VERBATIM JOKER came in July and so far they confirm our hopes for this descendant of one of the best “longevity” cow lines in Ontario (the same cow line that produced Semex’ famous “Sultan” bull). As some of our friends have expressed interest, we had semen collected at Great Lakes Sire Service (179JE112) and it will be available through MICHIGAN LIVESTOCK SERVICE (800) 359-1693. Note the casual photo on fall pastures that express his great length, height and dairy qualities.

TRANSITIONING TO GRANDPARENTSSue and I now have two grandsons, Calvin (born 2012) and Martin (born 2015), the sons of Megan and Ryan Schrauben of Dexter, MI. This adds a new dimension to our life.

Maker Verbatim Joker: 179JE112aAa: 246315 (Tall + Strong + Style)Bred by Kerry and Matt Fraser of Rockville Ontario (Kerry was our judge for the 2015 summer show). Sired by the “Response” son of “Veronica” (whose EX-94 full sister looked pretty good at “Expo” this fall). His dam: EX91- 8E (Canada) Potwell Legend’s Jennifer, produced 245,000 pounds of 5% Jersey milk and lived 18 years.
