Notes From the Field

Hello Michigan Dairymen! My name is Mandi Ramsburg and I am the new regional representative for Holstein Association USA Inc., covering the

Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the northeast region of Wisconsin. I am currently residing in De Pere, Wisconsin, and am from Walkersville, Maryland, where my parents used to milk a small herd of Holstein dairy cattle. I graduated from Virginia Tech in 2014 with a bachelor’s in dairy science. While I was in college I was highly active in the Virginia Tech Dairy Club, Sigma Alpha, and Agronomy

Club. One of my biggest college highlights was being a member of the Virginia Tech Dairy Judging Team, which won at World Dairy Expo in 2013, and winning High Individual of the contest. After graduation, I interned at Select Sires Inc. for six months as their Dairy Progeny Intern. While I was growing up, Holstein Junior activities had a big impact on my passion for the dairy industry. I was on numerous Dairy Bowl teams from Maryland, including the Senior Dairy Bowl team that won the national contest in 2011. I was also selected as a Distinguished Junior Member semifinalist in 2012. I am thrilled to be working for the Holstein Association and also to meet many of you in the near future. I hope to bring my knowledge and lending hand to assist you in bringing more value to your herds through the many services and products that we have to offer. If you need anything from me or have any questions or concerns you may contact me at 920.530.5023 or [email protected]. I look forward to meeting you and will be seeing you sometime in the near future. Mandi Ramsburg

8 Summer 2015

Congratulations to Melissa Hart on becoming the new editor of the Michigan Dairy Cattle News! We all need to work hard to support this new magazine. Getting

our great stories and ads out there is the best way we can help ourselves and the magazine. The Michigan Jersey breeders had an exciting spring. Our Spring Show had quality cattle, and was well attended. Our sale averaged just over $1900.00 on 37 lots. Brent Moyer and Mary Costigan put in many hours and we received many compliments on the quality of the animals and how great they looked on sale day. Thank you to all the members who volunteered their time, supplies, and hard work. Summer show season will be here soon. Remember your futurity entries are due July 1st. If you have questions or there is something we can help you with, please give me or any board member a call. Having jerseys should be profitable and fun (at least fun) and if we can help each other along the way, it makes it that much better!!Susie Green President MJCC989-862-5507 home • 989-413-0639 cell

The Michigan Jersey Cattle Club (MJCC) handed out hardware at their annual meeting held in February in Frankenmuth, Michigan.

The MJCC Distinguished Breeder Award went to Larry Haywood of Sand Creek Dairy in Hastings. Larry and his family own and operate Sand Creek Dairy where they have approximately 110 head of Jerseys in addition to 1000 head of Holsteins, Brown Swiss and crossbreds. Dr. Joe Domecq of Michigan State University was honored with the MJCC Distinguished Service Award for his years of being a MJCC Board Advisor. “Joe has done a great job of keeping the Jersey breeders in the loop with what’s happening with other purebred associations within the state and is well deserving of this award,” commented MJCC Secretary Jeff Michalek.

Can You Ever Have Too Much Longevity?

Potwell Legends Jennifer EX 92, 8E Rump 92 Mammary 91 Feet & Legs 95 Dairy Strength 91

Over one year ago I introduced Potwell Legends Jennifer to you as an EX91% 7E (a cow who had been rescored EX seven times) and recently had her 12th natural calving, a bull calf. Since then she was scored again and is now EX91% 8E and her last bull calf is now doing some light service work on the cows at Netherhall Farms and will be collected this summer. Canada tells us that only seven cows have scored 7E or 8E in 2013-- thus “Jennifer” is among the very elite living cows.Jennifer is milking well at 16 years of age and thus adding to a life total to date over 240,000 pounds of milk with a 5.0% BF and 4.0% P and is due again with her next calf. She moved into her third farm home last year, and the photos indicate how she looks today, taken one month after calving. (How many young cows do not survive a second home?)Why do we consider “longevity” (as a different measurement than Productive Life) to be so important? It is pretty simple. Unlike PL, which can be “plus” simply by having a third calf (even if the udder is so deep it will be the last calving) -- “longevity” measures those cows with the greatest combined ability for fertility, calving survival, competitive yields of milk, health and stamina, and ultimately who is most adaptable to the wet year, the dry year, the hot year, the cold year, to different milkers, to any environmental change.Longevity may not seem important to a dairyman whose efforts have been to invest in facilities and feeding systems to create a cow environment that is “the same” every day. PL may be all you need to keep your barn full-- a three lactation lifetime. But for those who graze, who milk in more extreme climates, or are organic, where we cannot have “the same” environment from day to day, “adaptability” is the ultimate genetic quality a cow can possess. We have to define how to acquire “adaptability” from genetic selection, as there is no “index” measuring it.“Jennifer” exhibits fertility and longevity and “she got it the old fashioned way, she inherited it” (Legend and the Ogston Vicky’s-- Juno and the Valleystream Jo’s-- back to Potwell’s BDM Jess cow who produced into her 18th year). She is a part of the cow line that produced Semex’ “Sultan” bull. Her son, Maker Verbatim Joker, gets some extra from his sire’s cross of “Veronica”, “Rozel” and “Topsy”. So we expect him to be a package of desirable type and longevity, ready to serve some heifers next fall.

The Michigan Holstein Association Master Breeder Award for 2015 was presented to Tom Barends owner of Jenesis Genetics of Fremont.

Tom began in 1981 with a few grade heifers and within one year he purchased a bred heifer and a fresh two year old from Mark Wentland and thus he began in the dairy business. Renting a barn from his grandfather, Tom grew his heard through the early 80s and before long, part of his herd of 28 cows were registered and he had his first classification day where his highest cow scored Good Plus 84, resulting in a BAA below 100. By 1987 Tom purchased his first farm that consisted of a fixer-upper house and sandy ground that ‘wasn’t good for much.’ He built a barn and filled it and worked his plan of breeding the best herd of Registered Holsteins possible. Twenty years later, the result of his hard work and attention to good genetics was a BAA of 110 having bred or developed fifty-one Excellent cows. In 2008, he had a milking herd and bred heifer dispersal but kept back a few open heifers and a couple of cows. He has since built the herd back up and is now breeding and developing his current herd of young cows. While he enjoys working on the farm and breeding good Holsteins, Tom is community minded as well. He has served on the Michigan Holstein Association board, the Michigan Farm Bureau and has been the dairy superintendent at his county fair for fifteen years. Tom has two children, Mercedes and Isaiah.

How quickly June has come. It seems like just last week we were fighting frozen water, plowing snow, and thawing out frozen fingers. Now first

cutting hay is in the books! And just as the seasons have changed, our organization continues to evolve. Our magazine has a new look, a new name, a new audience, and a new editor--all in the span of a few short months. I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Renee McCauley for her faithful dedication to our organization. She served as the Michigan-Indiana Holstein News editor for more than fifteen years and did an amazing job during her tenure. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to the new editor of the Michigan Dairy Cattle News, Melissa Hart. We had several qualified candidates to choose from and found Melissa to be the best fit for our vision of the future of this magazine. Plans are also underway for a new activity this year—a MHA summer picnic! With the help of District VII, the MHA Board is excited to sponsor this opportunity for our members to come together for food and fellowship. The details are coming soon, so watch your email and pay attention the Michigan Holstein Association Facebook page for updates. Let’s not forget the National Holstein Convention hosted by Illinois coming up the end of June. Good luck to our junior members who will be competing at the convention! I look forward to seeing many of you at the All-Michigan Show at Dairy Days in July. I hope all of you have an enjoyable summer!Sherry MeyerPresident MHA

23 Summer 2015

Our goal as the Michigan Junior Holstein Association has always been to perform with maximum professionalism as a board and to get as many

youth involved in the industry as possible. This year we put a on a successful semen and embryo sale, hosted another Dairy Fun Day and put on a hog roast picnic at the 2014 Michigan Summer Show.Dairy Fun Day once again proved to be a successful event as we had approximately 100 kids come out to MOO-ville Creamery for a day of learning more about their favorite animal with the opportunity to meet other kids who share the same passion for the dairy cow. We have received nothing but positive feedback on this event and plan to continue it in the future. Our next Dairy Fun Day is tentatively planned for Wednesday June 17, 2015 and we have worked hard to put together an awesome cow-filled day! There will be five sessions: Dairy Nutrition, Udder Health, Diseases, Fitting & Clipping and an ice cream making session! Don’t miss out on this great event! We are excited by the interest we have received from youth about attending the National Holstein Convention this year and are looking forward to sponsoring those individuals competing and representing the state of Michigan. This is something we look to do every year and urge youth to take advantage of this annual opportunity! This year’s convention is in Illinois and is planned for June 23-26. We have kids from Michigan competing in Dairy Jeopardy, Prepared Public Speaking, Trifold Displays and Digital Scrapbooks! Good luck to all of the competitors, make Michigan proud! This past summer we also had the opportunity to travel to Sanilac County to put on a fitting and showing clinic. This event was a big hit and pulled around 30 kids who were eager to learn and get involved! We are always looking for these types of opportunities to share our skills and abilities with interested youth. If your county is interested in having us out, contact any board member.Lastly, the Michigan Junior Holstein Association wanted to take a moment to thank all of our amazing sponsors who donated to the 2015 Semen and Embryo Sale. We were overwhelmed by the generosity and eagerness to help out the up and coming Holstein enthusiasts. We had a total of 10 semen lots, two embryo lots and a flush donated! Our sponsors this year

consisted of: Northstar Cooperative and Steve Reed, Alta Genetics, Tim VanHaitsma, Michigan Livestock Service & International Protein Sires, Taurus ST, Raterink Dairy LLC, Buning Dairy LLC, Brent Moyer and Dr. John Gunter-GGS Genetics! We can’t thank you all enough for your donations! The profits made off of these donated lots go towards putting on educational and fun youth events all over the state of Michigan. These opportunities wouldn’t be possible without great people like you! Finally, our next annual meeting is set for Wednesday July 22, 2015 during Michigan Dairy Expo at Michigan State University. We have moved the annual meeting to this date as we feel it optimizes the chance for increased attendance. We are at the point where a lot of our members will be aging out within the next few years and we are always on the search for individuals who are passionate about the Holstein cow and representing Michigan’s youth. If you have any questions at all about what being on our board consists of or ways to get involved please contact one of us! We would love to talk to any of you. Also, a picnic will be held at the conclusion of the annual meeting and the summer show t-shirts will be distributed at this event! Hope to see you all there!Respectfully Submitted,Hayleigh Geurink

Coming from a long line of accomplished registered Holstein breeders our Michigan Holstein Association Distinguished Young Breeder has carried on the

family tradition in breeding deep pedigreed cows backed by tons of production. The 2015 recipient of the Wayne Webster Memorial award is Scott Long of Clayton. Scott grew up on heels of his grandfather, Carlos, milking, showing and enjoying Registered Holsteins. After graduating from college with a teaching degree, he had the opportunity to grow into the family business. A wife and two children later, he’s an integral part of Long-Haven Farms ‘where the cows pay the bills.’ Over the years one of his most favored accomplishments is standing in a barn where he has managed a herd with a 16 generation Excellent cow, a 15 generation Excellent cow, two 13 generation Excellents, five 12 generation Excellents, two 9 generation Excellents, three 8 generation Excellents,

two 6 generation Excellents, two 5 generation Excellents and two 3 generation Excellents. Not only is the barn full of type, there are numerous 100,000 pound cows, one homebred EX -94 point cow with over 300,000 pounds of milk and several Gold Medal Dams. The Long-Haven herd was one of five nationally recognized Herds of Excellence from the Holstein Association USA in 2014 and they have been awarded the Progressive Breeder Award for three years. Scott has also served on the Michigan Holstein Association Board of Directors and several committees and he has continued to keep the Long-Haven herd on the tanbark trail winning several championship banners over the years. With his wife Jennifer and two children, Taegan and Grant, Scott continues to involve his parents, Doug and Beverly Long in the family operation that is the quintessential ‘family farm.’

The members of Michigan Holstein Association’s District VII have done a little digging into their history and have provided a look back at the beginnings of

one of the most involved districts in the state. This is the first installment in a series of features from District VIIIn 1972, Clyde Clark presided at the first official meeting of the new District VII association held at the Sun and Snow Restaurant near Cadillac. He stressed the reason for unity for Northern Michigan Holstein breeders: “We are breeders of Holsteins. We must continue to improve our cattle so the blessings of our heritage can be given to future generations. We are also the leaders for commercial herds---every top grade herd is backed by registered animals. We have to lead the way in testing production and proving bulls to breed top cattle. We need to bring constructive ideas to our meetings to share so we may learn from each other, pool our knowledge for the advancement of the Holstein breed.”The membership of District VII has flourished despite the geographic complexity of size, being approximately 300 miles from one end of the district to the other. Initially, the southern boundary was Highway M-20, but at some point it was extended farther south to Highway M-46, west of Saginaw. That first year of the District VII Holstein-Freisian Association had 58 member farms. At some point, the word “Friesian” was dropped from the name, but membership continued to climb. In 1977 the membership rolls showed 135 paid members. The Michigan Holstein Association was incorporated in 1948 and District VII was initiated 24 years later. In 2015, there are 169 State members, with District VII having the most members at 35.Prior to 1972, there was a North Central Michigan Holstein Breeders Association which applied to the State Association for district recognition. A Clare-Isabella Holstein Breeders Association was also active at this time. These two smaller clubs morphed into the current District VII. An offshoot of District VII (a club within the District) was the Arenac-Iosco-Ogemaw Holstein Breeders Club (AIO Club) which started in 1976 in the northeastern part of District VII. The AIO Club held Registered Holstein Shows from 1976-1995 and hosted a Fall Sale from 1978-1995. So for many years this District had two annual sales, one in April and one in September. The AIO Show initially was held at the Arenac County Fairgrounds in Standish, separate from the county fair. When

Glance Back in Time with the District VII Holstein-Freisian Association

the new Ogemaw County Fairgrounds were completed in 1980, the show was moved there, taking advantage of the milking facilities. The District VII Show was actually started two years before District VII was official, in 1970 by the North Central Club. Glenn Casey, who had moved from Williamston to Marion and purchased the Marion Sale Barn, was the driving force which initiated the show. He, along with Alpha Clark Jr., (who worked for Casey in Williamston while a veterinary student at MSU) had a “whopper” of a show at Marion with 200 Registered Holsteins entered. From a 13 year old’s perspective (who won showmanship that year), Mike Lee reminisced, ”It was just an amazing event.” Once a person experiences that sense of excitement and comradery, it’s easy to look forward to next year---and Mr. Mike Lee was involved in District VII activities for the next 39 years.Actively showcasing the best of the Holstein breed, while training the younger generation to use a discerning eye---the District VII Show has continued for 46 years. To be held at Falmouth on June 30th this summer, the show location is moved frequently to various locations in all fairness because of the large district area. So far, being held in nine different locales. Evart has hosted the show the most times.Alpha Clark Jr. has been Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder the most times, with Lee’s Woodland Farm a close second. However, no one farm dominated the Grand Champion award, each breeder had their memorable year. Sifting thru the many winners, it is noticed that

Norma J. LewisApril 20, 1939 - May 12, 2015

Norma J. Lewis, 76, of Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born April 20, 1939 in St. Michael, Pennsylvania to John & Mae (Wineland) Everhart. Norma was married January 29, 1961 to Roger Lewis and he survives. Norma was formerly the co-owner and operator of Ro-Ma-Lew Dairy Farm in Jonesville. She was a graduate of Hillsdale High School, class of 1957. Norma was a member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church and former Sunday School teacher. Norma was also a former member of Farm Bureau, a 4-H Council Club Leader, secretary for the Hillsdale County Dairy Promoters, and she was on the Michigan Corn Marketing Board. Surviving besides her husband Roger are 3 children, Shari Kline of Jonesville, Pam (Deric) Righter of Bloomfield Hills and Bruce (Jennifer) Lewis of Jonesville; 9 grandchildren, Nathan & Corey Hepker, Kaylee Kline, Adam (Kayla) Lewis, Brittany & Conner Lewis, Randy, Vivian and Abby Righter; 2 great-grandchildren, Wyatt Brooks and Aubree Lewis; and a sister, Betty (Richard) McClure of Hillsdale. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harold “Duane” and Don and 3 more siblings in infancy. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Jonesville United Methodist Church, the Hillsdale County 4-H or the Allen Fire Department.

Ward ShulerJanuary 22, 1927 - March 9, 2015

Ward Shuler, 88 of Baroda, passed away Monday, March 9, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family.

Ward was born January 22, 1927, in Baroda the son of the late Grover and Olive Mae (Stanard) Shuler. Ward took his first and last breath in the same room 88 years and 45 days later. He is probably playing third base for the Landon School this afternoon. He started playing in 4th grade and was a County All Star on the team that won the county championship.

He would like to have become a veterinarian but because his father was ill, he decided to come back to the farm after he got out of the Merchant Marines. He sailed for two years during World War II and had a lifetime of experiences. After sailing he farmed with his brother Wade. Together they had one of the top producing herds of registered Holsteins in the country. They bred many State and National production leaders in the 1960s and 70s.

Ward was a member of the Holstein Association and Michigan Farm Bureau. He was on the FSA county committee and a 4-H leader. He and his brother won the Ford Farm Efficiency Award for Dairy which culminated with a trip to Los Angeles and Disneyland in 1968.

He loved to visit relatives in California, Seattle, Florida and his great sailing buddy from Maine. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Baroda. He considered his brothers’ and sister’s families just like his own. His great-nephew and great-nieces; Allen, Karen and Elaine, were more like his grandkids.

On September 9, 1951, he married Shirley Mae Hildebrandt and she survives along with a son, William (Carolyn Mae) Shuler of Baroda; a daughter, Susan Joy VerDuin of Grand Haven; three grandsons, William Nathan Shuler, Wyatt Daniel Shuler and William Shuler VerDuin; a sister, Elaine Wolf of Eau Claire; and an uncle, Doyle Stanard of Bridgman

Ward was preceded in death by two brothers, Wade and Woodrow Shuler; and a son-in-law, Robert VerDuin.

Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy, Bridgman. Online condolences accepted at www.PikeFH.com.

Jenesis Durham Kaylee won Grand Champion honors three consecutive years (2004-2006), bred and shown by Jenesis Genetics, Tom & Jackie Barends of Fremont. Also, one other cow did achieve three consecutive years of Grand Champion: Clydal Fury Bella bred and shown by Alpha Clark Jr. of Sears. In 1987, Marylee Mark Magic was the District VII Junior Champion (Intermediate heifer), also Junior Champion at the Michigan State Fair that year and placed 6th at Madison in her class. In 1981, homebred Clydal Excellency Blacky was shown by Brian Clark of Sears. “Blacky” won District VII Grand Champion and went on to become the All-Michigan Grand Champion that year. In 1976, Alpha Clark III won showmanship at District VII and also won showmanship at the state show. The District VII Show was so much of a family event. “Show” and “Picnic” were almost synonymous. Initially, they were always together. From 1984 thru 1992, the picnic was held at a host farm in August. Then in 1993, it became part of the show again. Until 2005, Junior activities were held the evening prior to the show (Linda Clark and Rosemary Stieg kept this going). A judging contest (name the cow parts for the little ones) was followed by a hot dog roast. The District had always provided free photos of the 1st place Holsteins. Until 1984, professional photographers were hired (such as Agri-graphics). After that, Marlene Clark took the photos for many years. Some of you may remember the show program cover that the State Association provided (compliments of Michigan Animal Breeders Cooperative, forerunner of Select Sires) for all the district shows until 1993. It had the unique drawing of the Holstein cow with Michigan & the Great Lakes on her side, plus photos of the All Michigan Show Champion and the District Grand Champions from the previous year. Inside the cover were more photos and more information of various schedules, events, distinguished individuals, etc. Each district then inserted their own program into this cover.
