Mich i gan Cent ra l S ta t ion has towered over De t ro i t s ince 19 13 . An ominous symbo l o f the c i t y ’ s r i se and fa l l . I n the ea r l y 20 th centu r y, p roduct ion o f the Fo rd Mode l T made Det ro i t the most power fu l i ndus t r i a l cente r i n the count r y. Thousands o f passengers wou ld a r r i ve and depar t th rough the S ta t ion da i l y and o!ces i n the s ta t ion wou ld ho ld up to th ree thousand workers . The S ta t ion connected Det ro i t to the res t o f the s ta te and the count r y bu t the 1960 ’ s marked the po in t o f dec l i ne fo r bo th the c i t y and the S ta t ion . A f te r Wor ld War I I , t r ave l by t ra in p lummeted resu l t i ng i n a s t rug g le to keep the S ta t ion runn ing un t i l i t s c losu re i n 1988. The bu i l d ing has rema ined abandoned fo r the pas t twenty yea rs , bu t recent l y has rece i ved much a t ten t ion . The S ta t ion i s l oca ted in the Cork town d i s t r i c t wh ich has evo l ved in to a popu la r a rea i n De t ro i t . The ce leb ra t ion o f the ca r has become i ron ic . The au tomob i l e was a ma in component i n the c i t y ’ s d i spers ion and the dec l i ne o f the c i t y cente r. I t i s t ime to embrace the fu tu re and es tab l i sh a new nar ra t i ve. A r t i s t i c p ro fess iona l s f rom a round the wor ld have s ta r ted to a r r i ve i n De t ro i t . Hundreds o f vacant l o t s and a l ow cos t s tandard o f l i v i ng have opened up Det ro i t to an enormous amount o f po tent i a l . I t i s v i t a l today to use des i gn as a d r i ve r fo r change.
A new influx o f popu la t ion shou ld not mean ev i c t ion fo r the ex i s t i ng commun i -t y. Th i s i s why we p ropose M ich i gan Cent ra l S ta t ion as a p recedent fo r abandonment rec l amat ion . The recons t ruc t ion o f the s ta t ion w i l l be i n the hands o f the commun i t y, hop ing to cause a r i pp le e"ect fo r c i t y deve lop -ment .

bui ldings on the site that are a
r ich par t of Ot tawa’s history and
must be preserved. The trees
surrounding the al lee up to the
Deschatelets bui ld ing, as wel l as

be preserved to respect the
