The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), founded in 1829 as The Rochester Athenaeum, has grown to become one of the nation’s

largest private universities. The RIT campus now includes over 5.5 million gross square feet of space serving a student body of more than

16,000. Working in conjunction with the department of Facilities Management Services the design team was charged with developing a

sustainable and energy efficient improvement plan for the Reynolds Quadrangle.

Pressley Associates developed a cohesive and efficient system of pedestrian walkways that allowed for increased green space. One of

the goals of the project was to improve the pedestrian experience by raising the site approximately four feet to eliminate the existing non

ADA compliant walkways that served entrances to the adjacent buildings. As a result of improved site topography a large open lawn was

created to serve as event space for large campus gatherings.

Pressley Associates improved the pedestrian safety throughout this space by providing energy efficient LED light fixtures and providing

open views through the site by selectively removing large existing vegetation. The use of native stone as a unifying element was employed

to create freestanding masonry walls to control pedestrian circulation, define key passage ways and create a distinct ideality at this

innovative research institution.

While employed as a Senior Landscape Architect with Pressley Associates landscape planning efforts and the execution of a campus

wide site improvements program were implemented to accomplish the goals established in the University at Buffalo 2020 Master Plan.

The university was founded in 1846 as a private college and absorbed into the State University of New York (SUNY) system in 1962.

By enrollment the University is the largest of SUNY’s four comprehensive university centers and also the largest public university in

the northeastern United States. The design team lead by the landscape architects and comprised of engineers, campus planners and

architects were engaged by the New York State University Construction Fund to rehabilitate the University at Buffalo South Campus.

One of the major tasks of this important project was to implement the design guidelines and goals established in the master plan, which

focus on developing sustainable landscape improvements throughout the campus to strengthen its character and improve the overall

environment for all users. The master plan identified 16 individual sites for improvement throughout the South Campus. Pressley Associates

worked in conjunction with the campus planning department to evaluate each space, develop sustainable design options and to create

realistic budgets that were used to develop funding for the improvements.

The Kapoor Hall School of Pharmacy site improvements project was one of the first notable spaces on the South Campus that was

identified in the University of Buffalo 2020 Master Plan. Several of the notable improvements include removing and replacing the existing

landscape, trees and overgrown plantings as well as pedestrian walkways, plazas, site walls, seating areas, planters, and site furnishings.

One of the notable improvements was the creation of a sustainable plant pallet comprised of mature trees with native understory plantings

that provide year round interest. This plant pallet of mature deciduous and evergreen trees allowed for the creation of shaded areas for

gathering, helped to reduce the heat island effect and provided a reduction in exposed building walls throughout the campus.

Pressley Associates created a cohesive and efficient system of pedestrian walkways that allowed for increased usable green space at this

dense urban campus. One of the goals of the project was to improve the pedestrian experience by raising the site to eliminate the existing

non ADA compliant walkways and stairs that served the entrances to the adjacent buildings. As a result of improved site topography a

large open lawn was created to serve as event space for campus gatherings.

An improved entry experience and surrounding landscape was created by Pressley Associatesto compliment this contemporary renovation

and addition to Northeastern University’s School of Law. Working in close collaboration with the University and the architect, Pressley

Associates created design options that successfully integrated this modern addition into the existing campus.

Cues were taken from the surrounding site and proposed architecture in the selection of paving materials, pedestrian scale light fixtures

and planting. The use of light colored granite paving at the main entry to the building complemented the color pallet of the interior paving

which is visible through the all glass façade of the addition. This design feature allowed for a seamless transition between the exterior

landscape and interior architecture. Brick paving was selected for the entry walks allowing this landscape to seamlessly integrate with the

surrounding campus which is located in this traditional section of Boston.

One of the major achievements of this project was its LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green building council, the nation’s second

highest “green” building status. The use of light colored paving to reduce solar reflectance, energy efficient LED light fixtures, drought

tolerant plant species and a drip irrigation system contributed to the project earning this achievement.

HEALTHCARE

In today’s highly competitive market healthcare institutions are realizing the need for a cohesive landscape

program which reinforces their therapeutic mission, promotes wellness and creates opportunities for improved

patient care.

Michael is well adapt at working with healthcare institutions to integrate new facilities into existing campuses,

execute large and small scale master planning efforts which help institutions analyze their existing landscape

spaces and plan for future growth. This experience was gain while working as a Senior Landscape Architect for

Pressley Associates, Inc who is a leader in landscape architecture and planning.

Through this organized process we will analyze the existing property, meet with the appropriate user groups

to determine the current and future needs of the institution and incorporate those findings into design studies

which illustrate the various sustainable options for future growth. This process will allow for the efficient use of

land, retain value and patients due to an improved landscape setting and present a welcoming image to the

2,180 Square Feet

In order to address a growing demand for cancer care, Newton-Wellesley Hospital a member of Partners HealthCare System, Inc developed

its new Vernon Cancer Center which offers state of the art advanced treatment to its patients. A significant component to this important

project is the rooftop healing garden, open to the entire hospital community.

A welcoming garden was created by Pressley Associates for reflection with several intimate seating areas and an event space which allows

for large group gatherings was the inspiration behind this multi-functional outdoor space. Pressley Associates paid careful attention in the

design and selection of materials within the garden. Taking cues from the architectural detailing of the existing redwood privacy screen.

The raised planters and benches were also comprised of redwood to match the existing screen wall creating a powerful effect.

Several accessible seating areas were created by the placement of the raised redwood planters. This design concept developed by

Pressley Associates helped strengthen the efficiency of the space by increasing the overall number of users that the garden could

accommodate. A water feature was designed to calm the space and to block adjacent noise. The design also increased the flexibility of this

space by incorporating outdoor LED light fixtures within the raised planters and water feature. This important design element contributed

to the success of this multi-functional space by allowing the Hospital to host evening events and gatherings.

South Shore Hospital, one of the largest independently operated hospitals in Eastern Massachusetts has embarked on an extensive

landscape improvements program. Pressley Associates was engaged in 2008 to work directly with the Hospital to implement the program.

Several important goals of this program were to successfully integrate the new Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center building

into the existing campus, improve the employee experience and strengthen the sense of place by defining campus gateways.

The Cancer Center building was integrated into the site by creating a cohesive pedestrian circulation system that provided linkages to

the existing campus and increases pedestrian safety by providing improved crossings along Columbian Street. The landscape program

allowed for improvements that created a fully accessible patient pick up and drop off zone at the main entry to the Cancer Center, provided

outdoor benches for seating throughout the site and planting that provides seasonal interest. A covered walkway system with LED light

fixtures protects employees from the elements as they travel from the parking garage to the main entry across Columbian Street.

Careful attention was paid to the planting design throughout the property which allowed for a reduction in exposed building walls and the

creation of several native planting environments that are viewed from the patient rooms above. These spaces were specifically designed

to provide a natural calming environment that offers year round interest for all users of the South Shore Hospital community.

Program Roof Gardens

7,343 Square Feet

To meet the needs of an ever-changing health care industry the Albany Medical Center expanded its patient capacity with the construction

of a new six story building. Two rooftop gardens were created by Pressley Associates to provide a focal point from within the Hospital by

offering screening and privacy for patient rooms and outdoor access for strolling with adjacent gathering spaces for use by the entire

Hospital community.

The south garden located adjacent to a heavily traveled entrance is designed as a viewing garden that includes redwood privacy screens,

evergreen tree planting, and faux stone boulders integrated with loose riverstone paving. The color and texture of the interior flooring within

the building adjacent to the all glass facade will be extended into the garden to provide a strong visual transition from the interior to the

exterior. Careful attention was paid to the selection of the plant material in this garden. In addition to the evergreen trees located within the

raised redwood planters a strong understory plant pallet was selected to provide year round seasonal interest and color.

The north garden is a universally accessible strolling garden for use by the entire Hospital community which includes a variety of seating

options with a shade pergola located at the center of the garden. Throughout this garden, private intimate seating spaces provide room

for gathering relaxation and meditation. Deciduous shade trees in raised redwood planters with perennial planting below are located

throughout the garden and enhance this space that is designed to refresh, renew and engage the human spirit. This project is currently

under construction with an anticipated completion date of spring 2013.

This 1.2 acre property designed by Pressley Associates as a strolling garden with a variety of landscape spaces. The client’s vision

to create a landscape that allowed for year round use and exploration with a variety of active and meditative spaces was achieved.

Pressley Associates worked closely with the client to develop a program that encompassed circulation, vehicular access, a spa terrace for

entertaining, play area, outdoor lighting and native plantings with seasonal interests.

The calming qualities of a woodland forest were the inspiration behind the Entrance Drive improvements. Native woodland understory

plantings were used to strengthen the mature evergreen trees that lined the entrance drive creating a meditative entry experience. Stone

walls were used throughout the property to define the individual landscape spaces and a bluestone terrace was created for outdoor dining

and large family gatherings adjacent to the indoor Spa. Careful attention was paid to modifying the existing topography to preserve mature

deciduous shade trees and to maximize open lawn areas for play.
