INTERVIEW 11 student racing What got you into racing? MICHAEL OWEN I first started taking an interest in racing when I used to watch my Dad picking his 3 horses to put in his 50p patent on a Saturday. I then used to follow the top jockeys and trainers through the results section of the paper and once I got an idea of the game, my Dad used to let me pick one of his three horses. student racing Most memorable moment in the sport? MICHAEL OWEN I have had some great times already but I'm sure the best is yet to come! Treble Heights was my best horse. When she came round the final bend at Chester in her first ever race with John Carroll sat motionless my heart skipped 10 beats! She then ran some great races in Stakes company including a Listed race win at Newmarket but the best moment was when she came 2nd in a Group 2 in Deauville under Frankie. The whole day was fantastic and she tried her heart out in the searing heat to do us proud. Blue Jack winning a Listed race at Chester was another great day. student racing Horse for students to follow next season? MICHAEL OWEN Of my horses I'm convinced Mr Macattack will win a nice race one day. student racing There are lots of footballers in racing at the moment, is this likely to continue? MICHAEL OWEN I think so. I am probably the most heavily involved in the game but there are plenty of footballers that own horses, quite a few of them at my yard. student racing Due to the competition in racing do you think your stables can make it to the top? MICHAEL OWEN Yes I do. Racing is so competitive but if me and my partner Andrew Black didn't think we could compete at the highest level we wouldn't be doing this. It may take a bit of time but I'm convinced we will get there. student racing Best horse in the yard? MICHAEL OWEN Officially Blue Jack is the highest rated horse in the yard. Tom has done a fantastic job with him this year. student racing How heavily involved are you with the day to day running of Manor House Stables? MICHAEL OWEN I dip in and out depending on my football commitments. Football comes first. I speak to Tom most days and probably pop up to the yard on average twice a week. student racing Derby or Premier League? MICHAEL OWEN Premier League. Ask me in 5 years and that may change! student racing What’s more nerve wrecking... Having a runner in a big race or walking onto the pitch? MICHAEL OWEN Having a runner in a big race. I can control my actions playing football but there is nothing I can do once the horse and jockey leave the paddock bar cross my fingers! student racing We are taking you back in time, you’re a student... Why would you be going racing? MICHAEL OWEN We all like different things in life. For me, Horses are the most beautiful creatures, speed is a massive thrill and the skill of trainer and jockey to teach a horse from such a young age how to race. It's also a great day out, especially at my home course Chester! student racing Mick Channon was a great England striker like yourself, could you imagine yourself following his career path into training one day? MICHAEL OWEN No. I love my role as it is! Dealing with owners, getting up at 6am... no thank you! Michael Owen michael owen PHOTOGRAPHY / racingfotos.com
