WALL ENCLOSURE

ARTIFICIAL SURFACE

CONCEPTUAL OUTCOME

Dominating feature on site Programatic wall Manipulating the wall Three dimensional manipulated wall

Existing ground condition Artificial surface extrusion Conceptual integration

Combined manipulated wall with artificial surface extrusion

Natural elements on the site have been manipulated to create horizontalarchitectural elements that subdivide and restructure the ground layer into individualplots. These plots are large mostly flat with no immediate views but distant mountainand undulating sugar cane fields on a large scale.

The reinterpretation of this new condition as a programatic wall being manipulatedonto itself to obtain a vertical architectural form that allows for private enclosure andprovides great visual connections to these distant geographical elements.

The existing landscape consists of mostly lightly undulating hills of sugar cane fieldson a large scale.

The architectural reinterpretation of this existing condition is a surface which isartificially extruded into a faceted three dimensional-scape. This further creates acombination of high and low points allowing for opportunities of programme whichwould then inform a functional hierarchy.

The combination of of the two concepts creates a dynamic sculptural form whichvisually integrates itself into the landscape and can be further manipulated and fine-tuned to take maximum advantage of the geographical surroundings as well asadapt to the natural climatic conditions.

A vegetal roof has the advantages of providing a sustainable response to climate bycompletely insulating the roof slab and keeping a cool constant temperaturethroughout the seasons while in turn providing a pleasant visual integration with thenatural adjacent fields.

SITE: MT CHOISY, MAURITIUS

CONCEPT: inspired by the continuous rock walls defining the new residential subdivision, the house wraps on itself to create a private courtyard within. The spaces are thus organised around the courtyard, with all of its sides glazed but one which provides a backdrop as well as intimacy to the bedrooms. The result is a feeling of spatiousness, outdoors and spatial connectivity.

The fractal roof form was drawn from the character of the natural ground, with its uneven hills and drops. Intended as an artificial landscape to be accessed from an upper floor, it has been amended due to the clients desire to discard an upper floor

BEACH UNITS - RETHINK STUDIO

CLIENT OBJECTIVE: to develop their residen al property with rentable dwelling units for op mal financial return.

FEASIBILITY STUDY : proposal of master layout and density op ons. - PHASE 1: 8 to 10 duplex units in the “backyard” area. - PHASE 2: demoli on of old house for the accomoda on of 3 detached units on the beach front.

CONCEPT: Inspira on came from examples of townhouses as well as a referen al idea based on the site’s lush vegeta on and big trees: the legendary “Hanging Gardens of Babylon”!

Although an out of scale reference, the idea is to provide each units with their own garden terraces raised for privacy and the use of a basement.

PG HOUSES (above) + CONCRETE HOUSE (below)

RETHINK STUDIO

Rethink Studio is a small and very creative firm led by Yannick Goldsmith and Verity Nesbitt. Some big projects have been pending, such has a multi-storey office/appartment/commercial block, which I haven’t worked on long enough to claim participation or display valuable images. The work experience gave me a new perspective on the profession and the drive to pursue artistic creativity.

These 2 projects were near ready for construction when I started at Rethink Studio.

My small contribution were 1:50 physical models of the PG Houses (pictured above), which facilitated the choice of the facade screen elements (recycled demolition timber) as well as communication with the builders. Frequent site visits gave me a better understanding of construction technology and the importance of an architect’s supervision.

Renders made by third party

Above: 1 of 5 types of villasLeft: Optional pavillonBelow: master plan of estate

Site: Black River, Mauritius

60 luxurious villas ; 5 types + varying sizes2 buildable areas: a river edge and a higher plateau.

The “River villas” are raised on concrete pilotis due to ground instability and flood risks, while the “Plateau villas” maintain low roof lines in an effort to better integrate with the landscape.

STRONG ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES - masonry walls made of volcanic rocks found on site; - generous verandahs for outdoor living in the local hot climate; - gentle roof slopes and horizontal lines to blend with the landscape and panoramic views on offer.

PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION: - minor adjustments in master plan - sketch design of individual service centre units. - location and selection of villas according to site condition - participation in resolution of villa designs - in charge of optional pavillon sketch design

RIVER LODGES - TAKTIK ARCHITECTS

Site: Black River, MAURITIUS

Right across the river from the Akasha IRS site, the same client (Medine Properties) commissioned us for a smaller scale residential development.

Brief: to propose a layout of independant dwelling units and common facilities with maximum use of the site’s buildable area.

The masterplan layout respects the contours and provides as much connection to the river as possible.

UNIVERSITY vs. WORKMy internships have proven to be great learning experiences, thus compensating for the high amount of theory taught at university.I can thank my previous employers for having given me the motivation to go further in my architectural journey. I’ve been inspired by them in many ways, and have opened my mind to other fields of design and art.I will further my qualifications and knowledge by completing a masters degree in due time, but for now I am looking forward to working with other creative minds and am hoping to participate in the creation of interesting projects to come.
