STEM Definition
STEM may be defined as the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into a new transdisciplinary subject is education. STEM should be taught in an integrated and a cross-curricular manner, not just in “silos” where the individual subject areas dominate and the other subjects are only afterthoughts.
3
deals with and seeks the understanding of the natural world, and is the underpinning of technology. Science is concerned with what is in the natural world. Courses deal with biology, chemistry, astronomy, geology, etc.
CIENCESis the modification of the natural world to meet human wants and needs. Technology helps us improve our health, to grow and process food and fiber better, to harness and use energy more efficiently, to communicate more effectively, to process data faster and accurately, to move people and things easier, to make products to enhance our lives, and to build structures that provide shelter and comfort.
ECHNOLOGYTis the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.
NGINEERINGEis the science of patterns and relationships. It provides an exact language for technology, science, and engineering.

Architecture programs are increasingly taught at graduate rather than undergraduate level. Undergraduate programs tend to be extremely long, adding an additional year or more to a typical four-year degree. Cal Poly Pomona’s program is typical, with a heavy focus within the Architecture department itself, including electives in specific career-oriented areas.

Chemistry departments support other science and technology programs, as well as their own majors. Students who major in chemistry often continue to graduate work in science, engineering, medicine, or other more specialized STEM programs, so the occupations represented here are really just a limited set of the possibilities.

While nanoscience and nanoengineering are now parts of many science and engineering programs, degrees with those titles remain rare, especially at undergraduate level. UC San Diego describes its undergraduate program as follows: “The B.S. program in NanoEngineering is tailored to provide breadth and flexibility by taking advantage of the strength of basic sciences and other engineering disciplines at UC San Diego. The intention is to graduate nanoengineers who are multidisciplinary and can work in a broad spectrum of industries.”
