Clinical NeuropsychologyFellowship

Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville offers a two-yearpostdoctoral program for advanced training inclinical neuropsychology. This is accomplished viasupervised clinical activities, neuropsychologicalresearch, didactic experiences, and individual study.The program provides exposure to a variety of adultneurocognitive disorders, with special emphasis onaging and dementia. Elective training experiences areavailable in psychological evaluation, psychotherapy,and behavioral medicine techniques. Rotations innon-psychology specialties such as sleep disorders,seizure disorders, movement disorders, andbehavioral neurology are also available.

Mayo Clinic’s favorable faculty ratio, large patientpopulation and state-of-the-art diagnostic,therapeutic and research facilities combine to create atruly integrated educational experience. Administrative Structure

The postdoctoral program in clinicalneuropsychology exists under the auspices of theMayo Graduate School of Medicine (MGSM), whichadministrates all residency and fellowship programsoffered by Mayo Clinic. At present, there arecurrently 42 residency and fellowship programs atMayo Clinic in Jacksonville, including programs inBehavioral Neurology, Advanced Clinical Neurology,Clinical Neurophysiology, Cerebrovascular Diseasesand Psychiatry. The director of the ClinicalNeuropsychology fellowship is Dr. John Lucas.

Mayo Clinic Jacksonville’s Clinical NeuropsychologyFellowship is a member program of the Associationof Postdoctoral Programs in ClinicalNeuropsychology (APPCN). APPCN’s mission is toestablish standards of postdoctoral education andtraining that lead to the development of competencyin clinical neuropsychology.

Program Description

The postdoctoral training experience is divided into60 percent clinical service and 40 percent research anddidactics throughout the course of the two-yearprogram. Clinical service activities are devotedexclusively to neuropsychological assessment for thefirst six months of fellowship. After the first sixmonths, the fellow may elect to pursue additionalclinical activities in non-neuropsychological electiverotations (described below).

Clinical TrainingThe average clinical workload for theNeuropsychology Fellow consists of five completeneuropsychological assessments per week. Duringthe first months of the program, the fellow isresponsible for their own test administration andscoring. Psychometrist assistance is available once thefellow demonstrates competence in testadministration and scoring, and gains experienceworking with various clinical populations. All casesare supervised by a licensed psychologist. Ad hocconsultation/supervision is also available withspecialists in Behavioral Neurology, Neuroradiology,Neurosurgery, Neuropathology,Psychopharmacology, and Psychiatry.

Patients referred to the clinical neuropsychologyservice present with a variety of adult neurocognitivedisorders, including traumatic brain injuries,cerebrovascular disorders, neoplastic disorders,infectious diseases, systemic illnesses, seizuredisorders, psychiatric conditions, and degenerativebrain diseases. The majority of patients present withquestions of dementia. In addition to generalneuropsychological services, the fellow participates inWada testing and intra-operative brain mapping ofsurgical patients.

Opportunities in personality assessment, outpatientcognitive-behavioral therapy and behavorialmedicine are available as electives within the Sectionof Psychology. These electives provide tranining inthe evaluation and treatment of patients with chronicpain, anxiety disorders, depression, weightmanagement problems, nicotine dependence, stress,sleep disturbances, and sexual dysfunction. Electiverotations in various medical specialties, includingbehavioral neurology, movement disorders, EEG, andsleep disorders, are also available.

Research TrainingThe fellow is expected to organize and carry out atleast one independent neuropsychological researchproject during the two-year fellowship, with the goalbeing presentation at a national conference andpublication in a peer-reviewed journal. Researchopportunities are available through Mayo’s NIA-funded Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease Centers,state-funded Memory Disorders Clinic, and a varietyof clinical programs such as Mayo Clinic’s SleepDisorders Clinic, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, CancerCenter, Organ Transplant Program, and EpilepsySurgery Program. The fellow is also encouraged tocollaborate with others on additional researchprojects as time permits.

DidacticsClinical conferences, seminars, small discussiongroups, research center meetings, and one-on-oneinstruction are all an integral part of the ClinicalNeuropsychology Fellowship Program.

Organized didactic experiences include theBehavioral Neurology Seminar Series, NeuroscienceLecture Series, Neurobehavioral Rounds,Neurosurgery Case Conference, Sleep Disorders CaseConference, Brain Cutting, NeuropathologyConference, and Medical Grand Rounds. The fellowmay also choose to participate via real-time satellite inMayo Clinic Rochester’s neuroanatomy course.

Psychology FacultyJohn A. Lucas, Ph.D., ABPP /ABCN, serves asprogram director for the clinical neuropsychologyfellowship. He earned his doctorate in clinicalpsychology from the University of Texas at Austinand completed his internship and post-doctoraltraining in neuropsychology at the University ofCalifornia, San Diego School of Medicine/ VAMedical Center. Dr. Lucas is an Associate Professorof Psychology, with primary research interests innormative neuropsychology, early detection ofdementia, and cognitive sequelae of movementdisorder surgeries.

Steven C. Ames, Ph.D., Assistant Professor ofPsychology, received his doctoral degree in clinicalpsychology from Louisiana State University in 1999.He completed his internship at the MedicalUniversity of South Carolina, followed by a threeyear Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with theNicotine Center at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Ames practicesbehavioral medicine, with a particular interest in thecognitive behavioral treatment of anxiety, nicotinedependence, and obesity. His research focuses onidentifying risk factors for tobacco use anddeveloping more effective treatments for young adulttobacco users.

Tanis J. Ferman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor ofPsychology, earned her doctorate from the ChicagoMedical School. She completed her internship at theUniversity of Chicago Medical Center and herpostdoctoral fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester.Dr. Ferman is principal investigator on an NIA-funded grant to study the clinical and diagnosticfeatures of Lewy body disease. Other researchinterests include investigating the psychiatric,cognitive, and sleep features of Alzheimer’s diseaseand other neurodegenerative conditions.

Mark S. Schwartz, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, isChair of the Section of Psychology. He is pastpresident of the Association for AppliedPsychophysiology and Biofeedback and certified bythe Biofeedback Certification Institute of America, theAmerican Board of Assessment Psychology, and theAmerican Board of Clinical Sexology.

Other FacultyDavid R. Chabolla, M.D., Assistant Professor ofNeurology, is Director of the Epilepsy MonitoringUnit at St. Luke’s Hospital and Board Certified inNeurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. Dr.Chabolla leads the Epilepsy Surgery Evaluation teamand assists in supervision of Wada testing andintraoperative brain mapping procedures.

J. Richard Crossfield, MA, LMHC, is apsychotherapist in the Department of Psychiatry andPsychology. He holds certificates in primary andadvanced therapies from the Albert Ellis Institute forRational Emotive Behavior Therapy. His interestsinclude cognitive-behavioral approaches to mentalillness, addiction therapy, and organ transplantcandidate selection.

Dennis W. Dickson, M.D., Professor of Pathology, isBoard Certified in anatomic pathology andneuropathology, and has written over 180manuscripts and book chapters on pathologicalmarkers associated with normal aging and dementia.Dr. Dickson holds weekly brain cutting andneuropathology conferences in which autopsyfindings of patients with dementia are reviewed.

Paul A. Fredrickson, M.D., Chair of the Departmentof Psychiatry and Psychology, is co-director of MayoClinic Jacksonville’s Sleep Disorders Clinic and pastpresident of the American Sleep DisordersAssociation. He is certified by the American Board ofPsychiatry & Neurology and the American Board ofSleep Medicine, and is available for clinicalsupervision and research with patients with sleepdisorders.

Neill R. Graff-Radford, MBBCA, BCH, MRCP (UK),Professor of Neurology, is Chair of the Department ofNeurology and Principal Investigator onJacksonville’s component of Mayo’s NIA-fundedAlzheimer’s Disease Center. He is also MedicalDirector of Mayo’s state-funded Memory DisordersCenter. He has published more than 85 papers andchapters on memory, symptomatic hydrocephalus inthe elderly, thalamic function and dysfunction, anddegenerative dementia.

Siong-chi Lin, M.D., Assistant Professor ofPsychiatry, is Board Certified in Sleep Medicine andGeneral Psychiatry. His clinical and research interestsinclude sleep disorders, acupuncture, andgeropsychiatry

Marjorie McMaster, M.D., is a Consultant in theDepartment of Psychiatry and Psychology. Shespecializes in assessment and treatment of anxietyand depressive disorders. Dr. McMaster is programdirector for the Family Medicine resident seminarseries.

Elliott Richelson, M.D., Professor of Pharmacology,is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Associationand the American College of Neuropsycho-pharma-cology. His research interests include development ofdrugs to treat neuropsychiatric diseases, such asdepression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, andParkinson’s disease.

Ryan Uitti, M.D., Associate Professor of Neurology,is Clinical and Research Director of Mayo’sMovement Disorders Clinic, and Program Director ofthe Department of Neurology’s Movement DiscorderFellowship program. His research and clinicalinterests include Parkinson’s disease, essentialtremor, and medical and surgical therapeutic trials fortreatment of movement discorders.

Adriana Vasquez, M.D., is a consultation and liaisonpsychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry andPsychology, providing psychiatric care tohospitalized medical and surgical patients. She alsocoordinates psychiatric and psychological services forMayo Clinic’s organ transplant evaluation team. Herresearch interests include investigating complianceand identifying predictors of outcomes followingorgan transplant.

Robert E. Wharen, M.D., is Chair of the Departmentof Neurosurgery and Certified by the Board ofNeurological Surgery. Dr. Wharen leads the Epilepsyand Movement Disorders Surgery teams at MayoClinic Jacksonville. His research interests includeoutcomes of surgical treatments for movementdisorders, use of stimulation and selective resectionfor intractable epilepsy, and sports-relatedconcussion.

Zbigniew K. Wszolek, M.D., Associate Professor ofNeurology, is a Board Certified neurologist, clinicalneurophysiologist, and electrodiagnostic medicineconsultant. His scientific interests are in the field ofgenetics of Parkinson’s disease and relatedconditions, clinical neurophysiology, and neurologiccomplications of liver and bone marrowtransplantations. He is a Clinical Core Director ofMayo Clinic Jacksonville’s Morris H. Udall NIHParkinson’s Disease Center of Excellence.

General ProgramInformation

Rotations to Other Mayo Clinic SitesIn addition to regular contact via satelliteteleconference, the Clinical Neuropsychology fellowhas the opportunity during the two-year fellowshipto spend one month training on-site with theNeuropsychology faculty at Mayo Clinic inRochester. Mayo Clinic funds the authorizedadditional costs of travel, housing, and car rental feesassociated with this rotation.

EvaluationTo ensure that the fellow acquires adequateknowledge and develops technical skills,performance is monitored carefully during the courseof the fellowship. Informal feedback regardingprogress in achieving/demonstrating competence inprofessional practice, research, and ethical standardsis provided on an on-going basis. In addition, everysix months the program director meets withindividual supervisors and provides a formalprogress report to the fellow and to Mayo’s GraduateSchool of Medicine. Further information regardingevaluation and grievance procedures are reviewedduring orientation.

Facilities and Resources

FacilitiesMayo Clinic in Jacksonville is a comprehensiveoutpatient facility located on 240 acres west of theIntracoastal Waterway near the Jacksonville Beaches.It includes full laboratory and neuroimaging servicesas well as an ambulatory surgery center. St. Luke’sHospital is a Mayo Clinic-owned, 289-bed facilitywith 16 operating rooms, an epilepsy monitoringunit, and state-of-the-art neuroradiology suites. TheBirdsall Medical Research Building is a 75,000 square-foot facility on the Mayo Clinic campus that isdedicated to neuropathology, neurogenetic,neurobiologic, and pharmacologic study of braindisease. A state-of-the-art organ transplant program,women’s wellness center, and cancer research centerare among the latest additions to Mayo Clinic inJacksonville.

Patient PopulationAs a regional medical center for the Southeast, MayoClinic in Jacksonville registers more than 55,000patients each year. Eighty-five percent of the clinic’spatients are self-referred and come from within aday’s drive. Mayo Clinic has a reputation forsuccessfully handling the most challenging anddifficult medical problems for people from aroundthe world, allowing you to see and treat anexceptional variety of illnesses during your clinicaltraining.

Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is staffed by more than325 physicians, who practice in 50 medical specialties.The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology ishoused in the main building on the Mayo campusand includes four psychologists, onepsychopharmacologist, five psychiatrists, one nursepractitioner, two mental health counselors, fivepsychometrists, and four administrative assistants.

Libraries The Bursak Biomedical Library at Mayo Clinic inJacksonville has a growing collection of more than1,000 medical texts, 200 current journal subscriptionsand access to over 3,500 full text online journals.Other electronic resources provided by the libraryinclude OVID databases (Current Contents,Evidence-Based Medicine, Cochrane’s), MD Consult,Harrison’s Online, drug information databases(Micromedex and Maven). Residents have accesstwenty-four hours per day, seven days a week to theprint collections, computer workstations, photocopymachines, and audiovisual equipment.

The St. Luke’s Hospital Library is also availablearound the clock. Reference librarians can performliterature searches or help you with interlibrary loans.Many clinical conferences are preserved onvideotape. You may view them at the library or checkthem out for use at home.

In addition, the resources of the Mayo Clinic librarysystem in Rochester are easily accessible. The MayoClinic Library system has one of the largest medicalcollections in the world, with more than 4,300 journalsubscriptions, nearly 353,000 bound volumes, andseveral medical databases and search engines.

Telecommunications SystemA sophisticated satellite telecommunications system,which provides video teleconferencing and datatransmission, links Mayo Clinic’s practice sites inRochester, Scottsdale and Jacksonville. Staff can havelive, interactive consultations with physicians andtheir patients at the other sites via TV monitors. Inaddition, X-rays, laboratory test results, CT scans,ECG tests, angiograms and pathology slides can betransmitted between sites, providing rich educationalopportunities.

Compensation and Benefits

Vacation and Trip PolicyFellows may take up to 15 working days (threeweeks) each year for vacation.

When presenting research at a regional or nationalmeeting, Mayo Clinic will pay authorized expenses,including conference registration (if required forpresentation), travel expenses, and per diem expensesfor the day before and day of presentation.

Stipends and Other BenefitsCurrently, the stipend for the postdoctoral fellowshipposition is comparable to a PG-I medical resident.

The Jacksonville Community

Jacksonville is a great place to work and live. Builtalong the St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean innortheastern Florida, Jacksonville is home to morethan one million residents. Known for its beaches,Jacksonville attracts many visitors for surfing,swimming, windsurfing, fishing and water skiing.Tennis and golf also are popular activities in theregion. The international headquarters for theAssociation of Tennis Professionals and the nationalheadquarters of the Professional Golf AssociationTour are located in Jacksonville.

If you enjoy team sports, you have several choices.College basketball and baseball teams are fielded byJacksonville University and the University of NorthFlorida. Jacksonville also is home to the annual GatorBowl and a National Football League team, theJacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville will host the NFLSuper Bowl in 2005.

The city has five regional shopping centers, morethan 200 restaurants, a zoo, two major art galleries,eight museums, a symphony orchestra, and severaltheaters and nightclubs. There are nearly 250 publicand private schools and 14 regional colleges anduniversities. The nationally famous Jacksonville JazzFestival is held each year in Metropolitan Park.

Lifestyles in Jacksonville are focused aroundneighborhoods, each with its own distinctivecharacter and schools. Housing costs are among thelowest of Florida’s major cities.

Appointments andApplications

Currently, Mayo Clinic Jacksonville accepts onefellow into the Clinical Neuropsychology FellowshipProgram every two years. Applicants must havecompleted a doctoral degree from an APA or CPAaccredited program in one of the health servicedelivery areas of psychology (e.g., clinical,counseling, health psychology). Graduate trainingmust include core clinical coursework inpsychopathology, psychometric theory, assessmenttechniques, and professional ethics. Graduatecoursework in neuropsychological theory is stronglyencouraged.

All applicants must complete an APA or CPAaccredited internship with at least one rotation in aneuropsychology specialty area. Applicants whohave not yet completed oral defense of theirdissertation, or who have completed a“respecialization” program designed to meetequivalent criteria as a health services deliverytraining program in psychology will be considered.Applicants should have solid writing skills andexperience in research methods and statisticalanalysis.

All recruitment and notification procedures complywith the rules set forth by the Association ofPostdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology(APPCN) and follow APA ethical guidelines. Weparticipate in the APPCN Resident MatchingProgram. Candidates interested in applying for thisfellowship must register with National MatchingServices, Inc.
