ONE of the most critical impactsof Higher Edu-cation restructuringon individual school learners is theincreased cost of Higher Education. If we are to fulfill our commitmentto widening access and participationin the system, we need to be sensi-tive to this.

UKZN Interim Vice-ChancellorProfessor Malegapuru Makgobamade this statement during his ad-dress to the Education Stakeholders’Forum at the International Conven-tion Centre on the 16 July.

Another challenge identified byProfessor Makgoba was the need toexpand capacity within universities soas to be in a position to produce suffi-cient numbers of teachers. ALL South African universities pride themselves because of the three pillars thatconstitute the cornerstone of their raison d’etre – teaching, research and outreach. In a

developing society like ours, and unlike the private universities in the United States for exam-ple, outreach takes on far more important dimensions. It was with this important element of our

mission in mind that the interim executive structure of the University of KwaZulu-Natal includedportfolios for Partnerships and Outreach.

A number of articles in this issue of ukzndaba reflect on outreach activities at our institution. Ourlead story concentrates on a winter school which attracted more than 500 Grade 11 and 12 studentsfrom Claremont. At the same time more than 120 learners from 20 schools in KwaZulu-Natal partici-pated in the Upward Bound programme aimed at preparing learners from disadvantaged backgrounds forUniversity education. Our commitment to NEPAD is clearly demonstrated in our partnership with theMinistry of Education in Rwanda where 14 Rwandan students received their Bachelor of NursingHonours degree from UKZN. Through the Shisa! project, our students collected clothing, blankets, food and toys for distribution to various charities across KwaZulu-Natal. And our commitment tonational priorities is evidenced by research projects and collaborative projects aimed at food

security. The Outreach Office is currently preparing a directory of activities that give real mean-ing to this aspect of our mission and would like to hear from members of the Univer-

sity community who may be undertaking such projects. UKZN sets itself apartfrom other universities because of the nature and extent of our critical

engagement with society.

THE Westville campus was the venuefor the Girls’ Education LeadershipMovement Camp from 5-9 July. Thistraining programme brought together350 female learners from all overSouth Africa and other parts ofAfrica.

Addressing participants on 6 July,National Minister of Education MsNaledi Pandor said that the objectivewas to build the skills of girls so thatthey can “make a contribution to thecontinent’s development”. She en-couraged learners to consider engi-neering and science as careers.

Learners engaged the minister ona number of issues ranging fromteachers discouraging them fromchoosing Maths, Science and Tech-nology as subjects to their safetywhile at school.

UKZN celebrated the opening of its new Forestry Building on thePietermaritzburg campus in mid-June. The event coincided with acolloquium on “Forestry Contributions to Development in Africa”.

Forestry is one of UKZN’s five strategic research areas. A forestry ini-tiative was set up in 1999 with industry support. Since then, ProfessorJanusz Zwolinski, associate professor and head of the Forestry Programmeof the School of Agricultural Resources and Agribusiness and his teamhave been actively involved in developing a comprehensive in-house pro-gramme in Commercial and Community Forestry. The campus alreadyboasts four specialist forestry research groups: the Forest and Forestry Prod-ucts Research Centre, the Institute of Commercial Forestry Research, theInstitute of Natural Resources and the Land-Use Hydrology Group. Thenew building will provide infrastructure for a centre of excellence dedi-cated to forestry related education and research.

Distinguished guests at the opening included MikeEdwards, Director of Forestry SA, Andrew Thompson,CEO and Chairperson of Mondi and John Mugabe, Di-rector of Science and Technology for NEPAD. The guestof honour, who declared the building officially open, was Linda Mossop-Rosseau, Chief Director of Forestry.Acknowledging the importance of the occasion, she said“I trust that this development will grow through yourcompetences and dedication, your wisdom and co-op-eration, for the common benefit of better forests, a bet-ter future and better humanity”.

International visitors, business leaders in the forestryindustry, academic staff and students also attended theevent.

– Vicky Crookes

Women powerMs Pandor said she knows of no

law that allows teachers to inter-vene in this way, adding that: “Youmust make an assertion that you arepart of human society”. She saidthat the Department of Educationis taking up the challenge of edu-cating young rural women and adultfemales: “We want to create rolemodels and a pool of leadership”.She allayed fears that if the tradi-tional matric examination is phasedout, learners’ intelligence may notbe acknowledged. “OBE will givea Further Education and Training(FET) school leaving certificate, which will indicate your meritachievement and will be recognisedby education institutions”.
