Group Project

Purpose:

Get participants to engage with each other, engage with their section, and find out resources available to them to execute the project. Project should be meaningful to the participants and to IEEE goals.

High level concept:

Team meets to select a project and informs the Volt Committee via email. The team works together to develop the concept into a business plan. Six teams of 5 evenly splits the 30 participants.

13

Page 14: MGA VOlunteer Leadership Training (VOLT) Program Overview · Purpose of Volunteer Leadership Program Volunteer Leadership Training (VOLT) program is targeted at developing future

Details

1. Each of you are being asked to reach out to your section chair (and officers) to determine your section needs to aid in developing a meaningful project (a webinar, a new process, program, workshop, conference or meeting).

2. Come back to your team to share and to discuss each member’s project ideas. As a team, select the most viable idea to work on

3. Please think of projects that can implemented in a relatively short time and that are meaningful and useful at the local level.

4. Each team works according to the timeline to develop a business plan for the best team project

– Determine which program was the most effective and can be deployed to many sections

14

Page 15: MGA VOlunteer Leadership Training (VOLT) Program Overview · Purpose of Volunteer Leadership Program Volunteer Leadership Training (VOLT) program is targeted at developing future

Suggested ideas

Develop and conduct an actual Cross-OU Meeting. Similar to 2013’s project, pair 2 unusual OUs (WIE & TAB, YP & Life, EAB & Entrepreneurs, Industry & Consultants) into a joint-meeting. They learn about the needs of each OU. They learn how to register participants (it's free), how to get a speaker(s), how to utilize SAMIEEE. They choose a section(s) where these 2 OUs overlap for biggest impact. This can be a physical or online meeting (at least for the project team members) but must have reps from both OUs at a minimum in attendance. They can create a web page or Facebook page to promote.

Develop and conduct an actual Webinar. A real topic for real IEEE members (to all 400,000+). Participants choose a topic (could be based on something discussed in VOLT). They learn how to plan and promote the webinar. They learn how to register participants (it's free), how to get a speaker(s), how to utilize SAMIEEE. They can create a web page or Facebook page to promote.

15

Page 16: MGA VOlunteer Leadership Training (VOLT) Program Overview · Purpose of Volunteer Leadership Program Volunteer Leadership Training (VOLT) program is targeted at developing future

More suggested ideas

Develop a mock conference/workshop. Participants choose a topic or theme (could be based on something discussed in VOLT). They learn how to plan and promote the conf/workshop. They learn how to register participants (it's free), how to get a speaker(s), how to utilize SAMIEEE. They can create a mock web page or mock Facebook page to promote. They use the Conference planner and budget and contact real hotels/schools for space, food & beverage availability. Plan must be thorough and realistic enough, that if funded, can be turned into a real conference.

Develop a work product to help reach IEEE members with lack of internet capability. Participants choose how to best communicate IEEE goings-on in certain parts of the world. If Smart phones are lacking, do you develop non-smart phone friendly web pages to browse? If internet is lacking, is there a common meeting place to promote IEEE? Do you use the IEEE Foundation? Do you teach these members some coding skills?

Team assignments

Assigned teams to be a cross representation across regions

–Reality for any IEEE committee that you be participate in

Obstacles will be the time zone changes

Reach out to your team members and figure out what time zone everyone is in and the best time for group discussions

–What forum will be used – email, Skype, google drive, etc

Pick a team name – be creative!!

–Once we have a name, we will refer to your team by this name.

17

Page 18: MGA VOlunteer Leadership Training (VOLT) Program Overview · Purpose of Volunteer Leadership Program Volunteer Leadership Training (VOLT) program is targeted at developing future

Outcome/Debrief/Selection Process

Outcome

–Business Plan to be presented to MGA leadership team

• Template will be provided

Six teams will debrief to panel of judges (all participants will be invited to participate in session)

– VOLT Ad Hoc Committee and Staff

First Round: Select best Top three projects’ Business Plan

Second Round: Top three projects will debrief to MGA leadership team – Best Business Plan selected overall

All projects will be compiled and distributed to Section chairs and Region Directors.

Ground Rules

Balanced collaboration is key

Keep it simple

Participation will be evaluated during the process

Leverage your mentors for guidance

Identify your audience

– Section volunteers?

– Section membership?

– Section general population?

Have Fun!!!!
