At the onset, I would like to thank MGA members for supporting MGA’s broad range of activities in the past year. As the lead advocate for the nation’s natural gas industry, our combined efforts have enabled us to expand recognition for the association, significantly raise awareness on natural gas and its socio-economic benefits to Malaysia. I can confidently say that 2018 has indeed been a “year of prominence” for MGA, commencing with the hosting of the IGU Diplomatic Gas Forum, subsequently followed by a series of IGU committee meetings for the new triennium in Kuala Lumpur. We also represented Malaysia and its growing role in the global natural gas industry in several international platforms such as the World Gas Conference (WGC 2018) in Washington DC, US, Gas Information Exchange in the Western Pacific Area (GASEX) in Hangzhou, China and Gas Indonesia Summit. Given MGA’s rising prominence globally, I am pleased, and in equal measure honoured, about being appointed as the IGU Regional Coordinator for South & South East Asia. This opens the door for opportunities to collaborate with gas markets across Asia, creating a unified voice for the region’s industry to pave the way for clear government policies and infrastructure development. In Malaysia, we witnessed a change of government premised on a new Malaysia, leading to new ministries, new ministers and new mindsets. In response and led by our working committees, MGA has intensified our advocacy initiatives to engage with the new government, to showcase the burgeoning role of natural gas in fuelling a sustainable future. During a recent engagement, the Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change, YB Puan Yeo Bee Yin, commented in passing that that would be her third MGA event since her appointment and expressed her interest to continue supporting our initiatives. This is indeed a very positive development for us. We applaud the new government’s stance in holding course on market liberalisation. We also support the government’s policy to expand Malaysia’s renewable energy (RE) capacity, which bodes well for increased use of natural gas given that it is the perfect partner to RE. These are indeed exciting times for natural gas with the global green movement becoming stronger, more organisations are looking to natural gas as the best solution to lower their carbon emissions. Going forward, MGA will continue to enhance gas advocacy and stakeholder engagement as well as bring value to our members. I would like to once again thank all MGA members, especially my fellow council members, working committees, taskforces as well as the MGA secretariat and call upon all members for your continued support to drive the development of Malaysia’s gas sector - to grow your business and for the nation’s socio-economic progress.
