  • Magdalena Church, Laguna

  • Magdalena was formerly a barrio of Majayjay, Laguna. A petition

from the residents of the barrio for the creation of a new town

was presented on September 15, 1819. It was proclaimed a new

town by Governor General Don Mariano Fernández de

Folgueras on January 18, 1820, and was originally named

"Magdalena de Ambling". The name was derived from its patron

saint Maria Magdalena and the barrio of Ambling where it was

established. The first Teniente Alcalde or Capitan (the highest

political authority in a town) was Don Mauricio San Mateo. They

first established a makeshift school in 1820, which was the very

first requirement for it to be a town. The municipal hall was also

constructed. A small chapel was also constructed and it gave

way to the construction of a church in 1829. The church was

made of stones and bricks and donations were solicited from

the residents. The construction was finished in 1861. The

construction of the concrete town hall and the church convent

started in 1871, and was finished in 1884.

  • The Battle of Binakayan-Dalahican[note

    2] (Filipino: Labanan sa Binakayan-

    Dalahican, Spanish: Batalla de Binakayan-Dalahican)

was a simultaneous battle during the Philippine

Revolution that was fought from November 9–11, 1896

that led to a decisive Filipino victory. The twin battle

took place at the shores of Binakayan, in the town of

    Cavite Viejo (also called Cavite el Viejo, now Kawit);

Dalahican and Dagatan in Noveleta; and, to minimal

extent, in Imus and Bacoor towns

in Cavite province, Philippines that lasted for two days

before the Spanish army retreated demoralized and in

disarray. The result of the battle was the first significant

Filipino victory in the country's history.

  • Morong Church, Rizal

  • St. Jerome Church stands high up in the town of Morong. It was built in 1615 by Chinese craftsmen as evidenced by the Chinese-style lions at the entrance to the steep driveway. It took three years to construct the church which was funded by the people of Morong. The stone and mortar church has steps leading up to the front. The cross on the tower is illuminated at night and can be seen clearly from the countryside. It has a tower in front with a huge statue of St. Michael the Archangel. The three-storey façade, which was built in 1850-1853 to support a new bell tower, is one of the most splendid examples of baroque architecture in the Philippines. It is in graduated levels, surmounted by a four-storey octagonal bell tower of European influence, with paired columns at the four exterior corners. The ornamentation consists of a long simple nave. The 14 Stations of the Cross are beautifully done. The restoration of the ceiling has been done and old beams are now visible.
