An Evening at the Chardas MFS 700
STEREO
Bela Babai and His Fiery Gypsies For centuries Gypsy caravans have trudged across the European continent leaving their imprint as they went. Just as their Romany language frequently adopted words from local dialects (Hungarian , Rumanian, Russian, Moldavian, Macedonian, Spanish) so, too, did their music show similar influences. The Gypsy violinist was, like the jazz musician, an improvisor, an interpreter of musical feelings, pouring his heart and soul into the individualistic re-conception of the music.

Bela Babai personifies the Gypsy violinist who, stemming from Hungarian sources, has molded the music of various countries to suit his Gypsy style, aided and abetted by his countrymen. He has appeared in engagements in St. Louis (Park Plaza Hotel), Chicago (the Palmer House, Blue Danube Cafe, Caruso 's Restaurant) , and New York (the Waldorf-Astoria, Zimmerman's Restaurant). Currently he can be heard nightly at New York's Chardas where lovers of Gypsy music and fine Hungarian cuisine meet. Wherever Bela Babai appears the musical greats come to hear and applaud his interpretations and he has entertained Eugene Ormandy, Leopold Stokowski, Isaac Stern, Gregor Piatigorsky, George Szell as well as a host of other musicians and nonprofessional music lovers.
