The Lakeside Library’s opening comes just in time for South African Library Week (SALW), which was observed from March 14 - 21 Baloyi said,“ Libraries have always been about building communities in Midvaal, and today’s opening will pay tribute to that. Our libraries in Meyerton, Sicelo and now Lake- side, are linked to our community halls, so that they can serve as the centre of communities, bringing people together, providing knowl- edge, and opening up new opportunities, and this is part of the concept of providing a one- stop service centre for communities.” Baloyi continued that it was the responsi- bility of the community to ensure that the building was maintained in its current state: “I urge the Lakeside community to take own- ership and ensure the facility is used responsi- bly and safely – guard it against vandalism and theft. “The facility belongs to you, your children and grand-children. Do not let anyone take this gift, and the opportunities it offers, away from you.” Baloyi concluded. Deputy Director: Library Services Wendy Sibeko said, “Midvaal Local Municipality is known for the finer things. GEHOOR/HEARING

JJC Kruger &VennoteVereeniging – Umgeni str. 54,

Drie Riviere,016 423 3553.

Vanderbijlpark – Pasteur Blvd. 205,016 981 0328.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – A man’s inappro-priate attempt at a joke with an infant andhis parents at the President Hyper (Vaal) hasdeveloped into a major embarrassment forthe supermarket group and two local clergy-men. Thousands of social media users havebelieved and spread a distorted story of achild who was “abducted at a shopping cen-ter” and are now embarrassed by their owngullibility.

What actually happened was an infant waswalking just ahead of his parents at PresidentHyper (Vaal) when a man jokingly pickedhim up from behind. The man’s inappropria-te attempt at teasing the child and his parentsmisfired as the mother reacted with extremeshock even though he immediately gave thechild back.

By chance the child was the grandson ofa Vereeniging clergyman (Ster is withhol-ding his name in order to protect the identityof the child). At a recent preachers gatheringthe preacher-grandfather discussed the inci-dent with Rev Andre Swanepoel of the Her-formde Gemeente Vanderbijlpark-Suid.

This year is the Church’s Child ProtectionYear and so Rev Andre mentioned to his

congregation from the pulpit that for chil-dren’s safety parents should at all times keepa watchful eye on their children in publicplaces. ”

While I was talking about this I remembe-red my colleague telling me about his grand-child and I told the congregation about thepublic altercation with the man,” he said. ”Idid not intend to indicate that such eventsonly occurred at shopping centres such butat any public place, even in the street at ourchurch precinct,” he said.

Unluckily one of the churchgoers had lis-tened selectively and using her cell phoneafter the church service sent out a Watsappwarning to all her friends about the “kidnap-ping at President Hyper”.

The story which had reached thousand ofpersons in South Africa as well as Australiaand Europe, had acquired many fanciful add-ons such as that it had occurred the previousweek in Krugersdorp and that the abducterwith the child had to be tackled in order forthe child to be rescued. Other false informa-tion was that the man ran with the child toa waiting vehicle filled with members of achild abduction syndicate. All this is totally

untrue.A local industrial psychologist says this

is a textbook case of how the public embel-lishes an unfounded rumour in the social me-dia and causes panic without any foundationin fact.

“Humans experience a need for sensationand to express their own fear. They embel-lish a story until it becomes a credible andfrightening story. Additionally the names oftwo respected clerics were coupled with thestory, making it even more credible anddriving the anxiety levels even higher. Weall need to learn that we should not believeimplicitly what is seen on the internet. Beadvised to rather read only official publicati-ons having a reputation of distinguishingbetween fact and fiction” he advised.

Mr Basil Synodinos, CEO of PresidentHyper, says the incident was captured on theshop’s CCTV and it is clear that the maleclient carried out a playful but irresponsibleaction in picking up the child in front of hisparents.

The video clip clearly shows that the childwas given back within seconds to the shoc-ked mother.

‘”We fully appreciate the parents’ concernas our children are priceless and no one hasthe right to touch them without the parent’sconcent. The safety, security and welfare ofour clients and their children is of the grea-test importance.

We employ an extraordinary amount ofsecurity staff on our premises and have stateof the art security equipment in place to en-sure the maximum safety of our cliernts.”Mr Synodinos said

* Spokespersons of the local Police saythey are not aware of any child abductionsyndicate in The Vaal Triangle and theyknow of no attempts to abduct children atlocal shopping centres.

The assertions that are made in false elec-tronic messages that the police have warnedthe public that such events regularly occurat shopping centres are totally untrue.

“Parents must always be attentive to thesecurity of their children but shouldn’t makethe children unnecessarily anxious. All ourlocal shopping centres’ security measuresmake them the safest public places whereyou can be with your child,” said a SAPDspokesperson.

MEYERTON. - “Born to Read” is an initiative by the Gauteng De-partment of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

It targets pregnant women and new mothers. The idea behind the initiative is to instill a reading culture from

a young age into South African children. Parents are encouragedto promote reading to their children from the time they are born.

On Friday, March 6, Born to Read held a programme at the Lake-side Library. Representatives from the Gauteng Department dis-cussed the importance of reading with the new mothers. Entertain-ment was provided by learners of Lakeside Primary School.

Attendees were also given a backpack containing educationalbooks, and a nurse provided immunisation to anyone who requiredit.

“Illiteracy is one of the greatest challenges facing South Africa, and programmes such as Born to Read attempt to address this byfostering a love for reading,” says Mivaal Local Municipal medialiason officer Aaliyah Dangor.

According to Ms Koekie Meyer, Gauteng’s director of Librariesand Archives Services, during their first years, babies hear speechas a series of distinct but meaningless words. By the age of one, most children began linking words to meaning. They understand

the names used to labelfamiliar objects, body parts, animals, andpeople. Meyer further explains that readingand writing skills develop together. “Childrenlearn about writing by seeing how print intheir homes, classrooms, and communitiesprovides information.

They watch and learn as adults write – tomake a list, correspond with a friend, or doa crossword puzzle,” states Meyer.“It is there-fore important to ensure that parents encour-age reading at home, and not just target chil-dren alone. Midvaal’s library staff are excitedabout the opportunities that the new LakesideLibrary can provide to the communitythrough such programmes, which enricheslives and builds a better society,” concludesDangor.

“Reading can develop a society,” this is one of the messages brought across by the recent Born to Read Campaign.

By Donna van der Merwe (Optometrist)

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is probablyone of the eye conditions I encountermost in my everyday life as an optom-etrist in the Vaal Triangle. I have beenpracticing here since 1997 and am al-ways surprised by how few people re-alise that they have an actual conditionthat needs to be treated on a daily basis.People generally complain that their eyesjust feel sore and tired, especially aftera long day in front of the computer, orburn a lot when reading and watchingTV. Here are some Dry Eye questionsanswered:What is a Dry Eye?Basically, it just means that there arenot enough tears in the eye. The natu-ral tear film keeps the surface of the eyemoist, lubricates the inside of the eye-lids (makes blinking comfy), nourish-es the eye and cleans and protects theeye by washing away foreign particles. It also keeps the corneal surface stableend even. This all means that when thetears stop working properly, your eyesno longer feel comfortable and your vi-sion becomes unstable. What does a Dry Eye feel like?Typical symptoms include:Burning sensationBlurred vision that comes and goesRed eyesSandy, gritty feeling in eyesEyes that tear a lot, especially when con-centratingIncreased light sensitivityDecreased contact lens toleranceWhite, stringy dischargeWhat causes Dry Eye?Dry Eye basically occurs if the tear pro-duction is inadequate or when tearsevaporate excessively. EnvironmentalFactors: fans; air conditioners; heat-ers; dry and windy climate conditions;working in dry and dusty environmentsLifestyle Factors: smoking; medica-

tions such as an-t i - d e p r e s s a n t s ,antihistamines, de-congestants, oralcontraceptives andmany more; focusingfor hours on a tablet, cell phone or com-puter orTV screen; excessivereading or needle-work; driving long distances regularlyPhysical Factors: aging (causes a nat-ural reduction in tear production); cer-tain medical conditions such as diabe-tes, arthritis, menopause, lupus, HIVand thyroid problems. What can be done about a Dry Eye?Lubricating eye drops and gels: Justas with any chronic condition you mightsuffer from, a dry eye needs to be treateddaily. A lubricating eye drop should beused. Make sure that it is formulated fora Dry Eye, and not for allergies or infec-tions. Remember a Dry Eye doesn’t goaway when you use the occasional drop,or when your eyes feel better. Dropsshould be used daily for as long as theenvironmental, lifestyle and physicalfactors listed above are present in yourlife. Supplements: Fish oils like Ome-ga 3, 6 and 9 and Flaxseed Oil are oftenrecommended.Proper sunglasses: Us-ing a quality pair of sunglasses helps re-duce the light sensitivity symptoms andkeeps the wind away from your eyes.Make sure the lenses have sufficient UVprotection. Polarized lenses are highlyrecommended.Humidifier: Use a hu-midifier in winter near burning heatersand fires and in summer when the air-con or fan is on. Not sure if you havea Dry Eye? Make sure to contact yourOptometrist for an appointment today.Donna van der Merwe can be found inVaalpark (Tharina Centre) 016-971-1232 or Sasolburg (FNB Complex)016-973-2626.

“As the Vaal University of Technology faces its current aspira-tions, it is important that we remember and celebrate ourstrengths and our values. Diversity remains one of VUT’s highestpriorities, and one of the most important ideals.

“VUT hopes that this event will encourage interaction and har-mony among staff and students, thus contributing to the socialjustice and transformation agenda of the university as well asthe strategic positioning of the university as far as internationali-sation is concerned,” said Ms Kediemetse Mokotsi, Director:Marketing & Public Relations.

Amongst the dignitaries present were ambassadors from vari-ous countries with whom VUT has very close partnerships.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The growth of the Vaal University ofTechnology (VUT) as a formidable tertiary institution, both instature and size - drawing students and staff from all over theworld - has motivated the need to host, embrace and celebrateall cultures on campus with an Inter Cultural Day on an annualbasis. This year the event took place on Saturday March 14.

The VUT has 22 000 students of which about 2 000 are interna-tional, coming from more than 35 countries. These students comefrom very diverse cultural backgrounds all over the world. TheInter-Cultural Day is one of the most important annual eventson the campus that is used to appreciate these diverse culturaldifferences.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Emerald Resort & Casi-no’s recent Party of the Year (PotY) hosted at thelarge E&E Centre once again surpassed everyone’sexpectations. `Party of the Year’ is one of EmeraldResort & Casino’s premier events of the year,” saysTanuja Gangabishun, marketing executive at Eme-rald Resort & Casino. “It is a chance for us to show-case all aspects of theResort and for us to say ‘thankyou’ to many of our business clients.”

On arrival guests were treated to a full tour ofthe Resort. This encompassed the 3-star River Re-sort, 4 and 5-star Bush Lodges, numerous conferen-cing options, the entertainment capital that includesPins Bowling and Aquadome, restaurants Breezeand Sports Bar where the attendees were treated todoughnuts and milkshakes. The tour concludedwith a river cruise by Liquid Lounge on the VaalRiver where guests could sit back and enjoy thebeautiful view as the sun set downriver.

The Party of the Year, hosted at the E&E Centredemonstrated the full size and sheer scale of theevent and con-ference possibi-lities availableto guests andsummed up theevent in oneword – specta-cular.

On arrival atthe eveningevent guestswere providedwith a welcomedrink, greetedby jugglers andstilt walkersand escorted in-to the venue.Based on thethemeof a streetcarnival, the ta-bles were la-

vishly deco-rated to per-fectly fit thetheme. Aftera brief wel-come, themed food allowed guests to experiencecuisine from featured restaurants at Emerald Resort& Casino. Entertainment included exotic dancers,a photo booth, performance by iconic 80s South Af-rican band, Ballyhoo and sky dancers.

To conclude the trip all attendees were invitedto spend the night and enjoy the now famous Vaalbuffet breakfast at the Hotel. “Besides showcasingall the possibilities that Emerald Resort & Casinocan offer the conferencing and eventing industries,it was also a great opportunity for us to catch upwith our guests, business partners, suppliers, over-seas visitors and industry peers,” concludes Ganga-bishun. “We trust that everyone enjoyed themselvesand we look forward to outdoing ourselves againnext year.”

te `Raylite’ Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB)range. The warranty is valid at any one of First

National Battery’s franchise outlets - BatteryCentre - nationwide, regardless of whether itwas bought at that branch or from a differentstockist altogether.“If it’s a manufacturing fault, and is in the

warranty period, it will be replaced – no has-sle,” says Marketing Director of Battery Cen-
