PISCATAWAYTOWN GRAVE YARD

AS OF OCTOBER 28, 1880

The following listing, made in December, 1995, is a copy of a 40-page compilation of over 500

graves in the Piscatawaytown Grave Yard (on Woodbridge Avenue in Edison). The original list was

recorded by Dr. Ezra M. Hunt in October, 1880. This cemetery adjoins St. James Episcopal Church and is

often thought to be affiliated with it, but such is not the case. The strongest evidence points to Edison

Township as the actual owner of the property. Refer to the newspaper articles at the end of the document

for more information.

This copy is being made now for three reasons: first, to create additional documents that can be

placed in local libraries and other institutions so the information is more readily available to the public than

it has been to date: second, to better preserve the information because the paper on which it is recorded is

old and deteriorating; and, finally, to create information that can be sorted in ways that make research

easier. Consequently, as a result of sorting the data, there are four sections to this revised document. The

information is: (1) In the same sequence as the original; (2) Sorted in alphabetical order; (3) Sorted in Birth-

Year order; and, (4) Sorted in Death-Year order.

The title page of the record from which the copied data was taken (a carbon copy of a 40-page

document, the original of which is not in our collection) reads as follows:

On page 1 of the document, after the last record on the page, appears the following notation:

# Several stones in this yard were broken at the

time of the tornado of 1835 and inscriptions

are now incomplete.

The pound sign (#) is shown next to those records that were so damaged. It is interesting to note

that the adjacent St. James Episcopal Church was completely destroyed by this same tornado, and then

rebuilt as it appears today. According to the inscription on the gravestone of Thomas W. Harper, who was

killed by the falling of the church, the storm occurred on June 19, 1835.

About half way through Dr. Hunt’s original listing, after the name of Jacob Woerner (1792-1864),

appears the following: “Note. This list completes the record of all marked graves lying east of the

church.” On the last page of the Hunt list appears this note: “Colored burial plot in the south west

corner of Piscatawaytown grave yard.” Following this note are 5 inscriptions for John Demund, Yerkus

Martin, Margaret Martin, Mary Dunn and Gifford Dunn.

The original list of grave records, as it was prepared in 1880, seems to follow no particular order,

except perhaps as Dr. Hunt encountered them when he was doing his compilation. In addition, each record

is preceded by an unexplained upper case W or B or G, which may stand for the color of the headstone

(e.g., White, Brown/Black, Gray). In the following table of information, only the column headed RECORD

faithfully follows Dr. Hunt’s data. The first three columns have been included (and are derived from the

inscriptions) to be able to sort the records. Please note, however, that the birth year in column 2 might be

off by one year in those cases where insufficient information is shown on the record to make a more exact

determination. Also, all notes added in this new transcript have been enclosed in square brackets (i.e., [ ] ).

Two brief notes about those buried here: the earliest birth date is 1609 and 16 others were also born prior

to 1700; the oldest graves, as indicated in the text by Dr. Hunt, are those of Mary Jones and the two Hoopar

Brothers who died in 1693.

Although St. James Church is not the owner of the cemetery, a history of the church published in

1976 (The Story of St. James Church, Piscatawaytown, New Jersey and the Neighborhood) does contain

some anecdotal material about it. For example:

P. 3: “The Cemetery is not part of the Church property; it is administered by a local

Association, and is kept up by voluntary contributions that are not very extensive.”

P. 4: “The Cemetery with its ancient tombs dating from 1693 are well known. The grave of

“Richard and Charles Hoopar,” who died of poisoning, have been referred to historically over and over

again; until at last a record is found in the Library of Congress with a portrait of the ancient tomb....

There is another grave stone not so well known lying not far distant north of the Hoopar grave; but

it is impossible to decipher the inscription; only the date 1693 remains. Obviously it is the stone of an adult

grave; was there laid to rest here the mother of the boys [?] - fancy lingers; but fanciful speculation is not

history.”

Pp. 8-9: In 1776 there was a skirmish between British troops of the 42nd Foot and the Royal

Highland Regiment and a detachment of Jersey militia men. “Thirty British troops were killed or

subsequently died of their wounds, and were buried simply by having the earthworks of breastworks turned

in upon them. The breastworks, or rather distinct evidences of them, were visible here up to 1910, when the

cemetery was cleaned up and leveled. The place of the sepulture ranges from one yard to the east of the

church six feet from the railing, to the extremity of the Cotheal tomb.”

P. 13: “Dr. Neilson began measures in 1913, for the erection of a Parish house. It was

discovered that the church had no title to the land on which it stood. An old royal grant had long since been

invalid; no attempt had ever been made to receive a valid grant from the New Jersey Proprietors. Recourse

was had to the good offices of the State of New Jersey. A Bill was passed by the State Assembly

reconveying the cemetery and Church ground to the Township Commissioners as ‘common property’ who

were then enabled to make a grant, which then was validated by special act. The Church owns a frontage of

190 feet by about 250 feet. The Cemetery is vested in a local cemetery association.”

Appendix-P.4: “In 1695 the East Jersey Proprietors granted two tracts of land to George Drake,

Benjamin Hull, Thomas Higgins, and Edward Slater for the benefit of the Freeholders of the Township of

Piscataqua in common. The first tract to be appropriated for a burying place....Even before this date the

present burial ground had been used for that purpose, and several tombstones bear the date 1693. One well

know ancient slab bears the following inscription:

Spectators, underneath this tomb

Lies two boys that lay in one womb

The eldes was full 12 years old

They youngest was 5 twice told.

By eating mushrooms for food

Rare in that day time, They poysoned were.

# The common story is that Thomas Harper was

standing out in the great storm of 1835 and when

advised by some one to enter the inn which then

stood opposite the church he uttered the most

profane oaths declaring he would not fear God until

he felt his power was instantly struck with a piece of

timber from the falling church and died four days

afterward.
