AYŞEN ERGİN B.Sc.,Ph.D.,Civil Engineering

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

Dr. AyĢen Ergin is a Professor of Coastal Engineering in the Middle East Technical University

(METU), Ankara, Turkey, responsible for teaching courses in coastal hydraulics and

port engineering, marina design, physical and mathematical modeling and port

simulation models. Having supervised 75 masters and 10 doctoral studies and worked

on applied research projects as director or researcher, she has also been involved in a

large number of consulting activities in coastal engineering works focusing particularly

on Turkish coasts including the Black Sea Coast and Mediterranean. She has

numerous publications to her credit, is a key member of MEDCOAST Network and has

been lecturing on Coastal Engineering at national and international training courses

under European Joint Master in Water and Coastal Management, Socrates - Erasmus

Programmes, EU Socrates-Erasmus Intensive Programme, “Intensive Programme in

European Integrated Coastal Zone Management”COZIP, Management of Coastal

Recreational Tourism; Design of Marinas; Training Course ,University of Malta-

Valetta,Malta

Along with her teaching and researching responsibilities, she undertook duties under various

levels of the University Administration. She has acted as Head of the Coastal and Harbour

Engineering Laboratory and Research Center, METU, Counselor to Chairman of Civil

Engineering Department; METU and has been Counselor to the Rector, METU responsible

for art and culture, and student activities between the years 1993-2000. She was the chair-

person of both the 16th (2001) and the 17th (2004) „Civil Engineering Technical Congress‟,

organized by Chamber of Turkish Civil Engineers.

She was the UNDP „‟SNC National Expert‟ on „Coastal Zone Management and Climate

Change‟ under the „Enabling Activities for the Preparation of Turkey‟s „UNDP Second

National Communication to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change,(UNFCCC);

Coastal Areas‟ (2011-2012) in UNDP Project.

She is currently acting as chairperson of the Organizing Committee of ICCE, 2016, Istanbul

Conference and she is the chair-person of the Board of Ocean Engineering (Turkish Chamber

of Civil Engineers), she is member of Board of Certification (Turkish Chamber of Civil

Engineers).

BASIC and SPONSORED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

Responsibilities in national level; more than 100 basic and applied research and consulting

activities, supported by TUBITAK( Turkish Board of Scientific and Technological Research

Center), DPO(State Planning Organization) and sponsored by Ministry of Public Works,

Ministry of Transportation and Private Firms, have been carried out in physical and

mathematical modeling as director or researcher on coastal and harbour engineering

problems;wave prediction, data analysis, wave statistics, wave dissipation, wave forces,

breakwaters, harbor structures, reliability based design of coastal structures, coastal

sedimentation, physical planning of ports and marinas, mathematical modelling (simulation

models) for optimum port size, coastal scenic assessment.

On national level, she was in the scientific board of the „Standards and Guidelines for

Planning and Design of Marine Works‟ (2007), and „Master plans for Ports and Marinas in

Turkey‟ and „Master Plan of Commercial Ports in Turkey‟ (2008) sponsored Ministry of

Transportation. Currently, she is working in the scientific commitee of revising the „Standards

and Guidelines for Planning and Design of Marine Works‟ (2007),

She was the Director of TUBITAK Project, „Developing A Vulnerability Model Of Coastal

Areas Against the Impacts Of Climate Change supported with sediment model‟ (2009-2012).

On the international level; she was the coordinator and the head of the Turkish team of the

British Council Project, „Coastal Scenic Assessment at Selected Areas; Turkey, UK and

Malta‟, (2000-2004), which is the first pilot project for Mediterranean trans –boundaries, where

a novel scientific technique was developed using fuzzy logic approach. The developed

mathematical model is internationally accepted methodology used as a tool in „Integrated

Coastal Zone Management‟ studies at more than 100 sites around the world.

She was the director of the DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs,

British Government) Project „Adaptive Management Strategies for Climate Change & Global

Warming at Selected Coastal Areas in Turkey‟, (2006-2008), where a novel indicator-based

methodology was developed to obtain the coastal vulnerability risk maps under sea-level rise

to be used as a tool for the decision makers. The developed model has an international

recognition used as a tool in risk models (e.g. TRANSFER Project,2012).

She was the coordinator of „Council of Europe Project‟ „Risk and Vulnerability to Sea Level

Rise and Tsunami of Selected Low Lying Coastal Areas in the Maltese Islands and Turkey

(2010-2012) carried out by METU, Ocean Engineering Research Center and Euro-

Mediterranean Centre on Insular Dynamics,

She has been appointed as an indepented expert, acting as an evaluator by the Europian

Community, represented by the Europian Commission to the evaluation of proposals FP7-

ENV-2009-1 submitted to the Commision in year 2009.
