    Metropolis Review

The film Metropolis is a beautiful look at a dystopian society and reflects some of the

issues and feelings of the time and is a part of the German expressionist movies of thistime. This film has been beautifully crafted and is full of political views and socialcommentary which give us another look into the minds of the artist of this time as pointedout byMetropolis predicts the ideologies of class and race of the 20th century(PeterBradshaw.2010)

Made in 1927 and directed by Fritz Lang one of the first pioneers of Sci-fiction we aretaken on mesmerizing trip into an art deco styled dystopian future where the rich live likegods and the poor work to the deaths in a hellish machine which keeps the whole cityalive. As ben waters discusses in his review of metropolis

Building on earlier science fiction and endlessly influential on later works, Langs film is amammoth marvel, fusing modernism and expressionism, art deco and Biblical spectacle,Wagnerian bombast, sentimental Marxism and religious millenarianism. Sit close to a big

screen and submit tothe machine. (BenWalters 2010)

As an audience we watch as this film take us on a journeythrough the first sci fi epic with massive and awe inspiring shotsof the future as never before depicted this film. It has also been

put into everybodys visual banks with it imagery which has beengrounded into our social subconscious by its very well-knownshots and imagery as its plot and subject points have been popularized and used In much of modern cinemanoted in Jonathan Romany review.

it's uncanny to see how many shadows of cinema yet to come it already contains. Things to Come, BladeRunner, Alphaville and The Matrix are all there in embryonic state. Metropolis has also been a major influence inpop, with Kraftwerk and Madonna overtly rifling its imagery and oddball soulster Janelle Mone even now kittingup in Langian robo-chic.But pop admires havent always been kind to Lang's vision (JONATHANROMNEY. (2010).

Its strange to see how a film made so long ago could havesuch a bleak view of the future butdont we as artist have aduty to not just show how beautiful and happy things could beand are but to show the dark side of the world and to point outhow we can go wrong as a society and what is wrong with oursociety .Fritz Lang is one of the main directors we can thankfor this and as thanks this film should be a rite of passage forany true sci fi or film fan.
