Who Needs Accurate Measurements? Everybody!
Metrology in the GCC applies to all sectors of manufacturing industries and has a direct impact on the profitability, capabilities and the sustainability of a business.
Measurements are applied at all levels of production, at the raw materials level and for end products.
Reliable measurement results are important for the industry, e.g. (machinery, electronics), Consumer care, protection & Safety e.g. (food production and inspection),
Measurements types are evolving with the needs of new and emerging technologies (biotechnology and nanotechnology,.. ) etc.
Metrology in IndustryMetrology: The Science of Measurements
National Measurement Systems are set up by the GCC Governments to develop and provide measurement services according to the needs of society and economy.
A well-functioning metrological infrastructure is essential for a sustainable economy.
Regular checks to be performed by the authorities to ensure the operation and functioning of metrological infrastructure in the country.
The National authority must know what measurements are used in the various fields.
Measurement fields include ,Mass and related measurements (eg. force and torque), dimensional measurements, temperature and humidity, electricity, time, photo- and radiometry, chemical analyses and measurements, water and gas consumption, sound and radioactivity measurements
Impact of Metrology on Industry
Impact on COSTS
• Metrology plays a big role in the efficient operation of the plants, costs of a plant, equipment, facility and employees.
• Metrology tools help in creation of revenue, like knowledge of plant operation, avoidance of scrap or excessive production steps and off spec products.

GOIC provides expert reviews of productions processes, optimum use of measurements in plants.
Measurements are used extensively in GOIC’s Industrial Technical Assessment Program for all processes and equipment in the plants to reduce costs by:
• Reducing energy consumption• Minimizing waste • Pollution prevention• Productivity improvement
A detailed report will provide recommendations of how the use of applied measurements can improve the performance and quality while focusing on reducing your costs.
GOIC’s Industrial Technical Assessment Program
Identify Opportunities for Energy & Water Conservation, Waste Minimization, and Productivity Enhancements; to improve profits and the competitive position of companies as well as Protect the Environment.
Efficient operation and high performance of SMEs require continuous monitoring and assessments in terms of energy, water, waste, production, and finance.
Experts explore and highlight opportunities in Energy Conservation by both visual and actual measurements

Metal Industry
By reducing losses and inefficiencies, improving your power
factor means you need to draw less from the network, saving you money on your electricity bill.
Power factor correction (PFC) can prolong the life of electrical equipment.
It can help avoid voltage drops over long cables and reduce efficiency losses in your supply transformers.
PFC will increase the effective capacity of your local electricity network - potentially deferring future investment in electrical infrastructure and allowing you to connect more machinery to the same utility connection.

EXAMPLES OF WASTE REDUCTION Flexible Packaging Industry
Problems: The chiller is mounted on the roof in direct sun. This requires the unit to do more work to remove the
build-up of heat. Roof mounted chiller water storage tank lid removed
to allow all the pipes to enter the tank. This then allows the water to evaporate away and
requires the tank to be topped up and additional chemicals added.
This is a waste of water.
Solutions: A simple shade over the unit would lower
the ambient temperature by as much as 20 degrees C. (See picture above)
It is recommended that all water pipes are sealed and water loss kept to a minimum.

Understanding the real economic impact of metrology on the economy is
subject of detailed studies and surveys of existing companies that are
manufacturing and selling products. Which to our knowledge has not
been done in depth in this region except for few probing studies which
have been implemented .
